Hell yeah, Ensign starts with the right foot the pre-season! Now, if the Alfa engine is good, maybe we can be the surprise of the championship.

By the way, here are the grid sizes for the races:

Since no one asked for changes, I'll just go with the original calendar. But there will be an NC round at Suzuka at the end of the season.

Argentine GP - Buenos Aires - 30 starters
Brazilian GP - Jacarepagua - 28 starters
South African GP - Kyalami - 28 starters
US GP West - Long Beach - 28 starters
Monaco GP - Monaco - 24 starters
Belgian GP - Zolder - 28 starters
Spanish GP - Jarama - 26 starters
Swedish GP - Anderstorp - 28 starters
French GP - Paul Ricard - 30 starters
British GP - Brands Hatch - 28 starters
German GP - Hockenheim - 32 starters
Austrian GP - Österreichring - 30 starters
Dutch GP - Zandvoort - 28 starters
Italian GP - Monza - 30 starters
US GP East - Watkins Glen - 28 starters
Canadian GP - Montreal - 28 starters

Japanese GP (NC) - Suzuka - 30 starters

Are you OK with that or would you like any changes?

No.

Also McLaren approve of the schedule as proposed.

Replace the Swedish GP with a Swiss GP at Dijon and I'd be perfectly happy with that calendar.

Maybe you can make a classifications based on acceleration, on top speed and on reliability, without disclosing any numbers.

I still don't think that's a good idea; I prefer trying to make the judgement myself on what I should be developing.

Or maybe each team owner can be emailed the stats for their car, without revealing anything about other teams.

We'd like to attend the test wherever it is, with both of our race drivers. We'll be focusing on top speed at the test, and after the first race, we'd like a 1,500,000 upgrade on reliability please :)

So, which one is correct now? Although I wouldn't recommend you to spend 1.5 Mio on reliability.

Everone who hasn't spent the full 2.4 Mio still has time until the first race on Wednesday to buy upgrades (especially Williams springs to my mind).

Oh dear. Not a terribly good start to testing, being beaten by a Surtees. On the bright side, all 3 drivers look very consistant.

Not bad at all. We're on well paired with Brabham in the internal Alfa Romeo struggle and not so far away from the Ferraris. The power is there, and if the ground effects updates work as well as I expect, Ensign will not oly battle for the top 10, but the top 5

Well, we're a decent way ahead of the Apollons and Merzarios, so not too bad. Still some way away from the lower midfield though.

With 41 entrants and 30 race starters, only the eleven drivers of the new teams had to go through friday morning's pre-qualifying. The weekend of Rupert Keegan was over after just two laps, when he crashed out. He escaped the accident unhurt, as well as Patrick Studer, who crashed 20 minutes later on his 12th lap. As expected, the Williams and Arrows cars made it into main qualifying without problems. The only interesting battle was between Pescarolo, Heyer and Lunger for 6th.

1. Carlos Pace (Williams FW06) +0:0.000
2. Carlos Reutemann (Williams FW06) +0.069
3. Emerson Fittipaldi (Arrows A1) +0.373

9. Arturo Merzario (Merzario A1) +3.409

Here's some free advice; if you can keep this level of performance up, try and steal Tom Sneva off of Penske for 1979.

Also this looks like it's going to be a very interesting year... especially considering this is Villeneuve's first race in a top machine and he's already got a pole. I'd still bet on Hunt or Pryce taking the title - they've both done it before. ;)

An entirely competent start. Shame we couldn't qualify, but we were near enough that I'm optimistic about the season, and it will probably get a lot easier once Williams and Arrows are out of pre-qualifying. Onwards and upwards...

Not the leap forward we wanted/expected to get. We're going to have to be wiser this year with our updates because we've got quite a tight budget...

Here's some free advice; if you can keep this level of performance up, try and steal Tom Sneva off of Penske for 1979.

Also this looks like it's going to be a very interesting year... especially considering this is Villeneuve's first race in a top machine and he's already got a pole. I'd still bet on Hunt or Pryce taking the title - they've both done it before. ;)

I know that Sneva is a competent driver, but since he DNF while Patrick Tambay put the other Penske in 14 on the grid... And while Ensign acquired Parnelli's assets, we're still with a somewhat tight budget. Depending of the results, there can be hope though.
The McLaren duo have done it before, but Gilles unleashed is a force to be reckoned.

Sneva won a race last year. And he beat Tom Pryce to do it. If for some unknown reason Hunt or Pryce left, he was the guy I was looking to to replace them. Hell, I might sign him anyway when Hunt retires after 1979.

It probably wasn't a good idea to be the only backmarker that actually pays its drivers...
Well, at least the performance is as expected, some races i'll make the cut, some races i won't. Willy Kauhsen promises developments!
I don't know what i want and i want it now!

Damn Fittipaldi didn't get the best qualification, but at least it is a long race and everything can happen. Pushing for some points, that is what we are doing this race and season...

First race of the season, and the results are far less predictable than last year:

1. Tom Pryce (McLaren-Cosworth) 52 Laps
2. Clay Regazzoni (Ensign-Alfa Romeo) +4.150
3. Emerson Fittipaldi (Arrows-Cosworth) +6.807
4. James Hunt (McLaren-Cosworth) +10.359
5. Gilles Villeneuve (Ferrari) +21.516
6. Riccardo Patrese (Ferrari) +21.549
7. Carlos Reutemann (Williams-Cosworth) +40.408
8. Jody Scheckter (Brabham-Alfa Romeo) +54.586
9. Rene Arnoux (Renault) +1:01.559
10. Bruno Giacomelli (Ensign-Alfa Romeo) +1:02.588
11. Patrick Tambay (Penske-Cosworth) +1:03.285
12. Niki Lauda (Lotus-Renault) +1:09.494
13. Ronnie Peterson (Shadow-Cosworth) +1:10.590
14. Rick Mears (Lotus-Renault) +1:11:686
15. Chris Amon (Surtees-Cosworth) +1:17.895
16. Jacques Laffite (Arrows-Cosworth) +1:23.307
17. Elio de Angelis (Ligier-Ferrari) +1 Lap
18. Jean Pierre Jarier (Tyrrell-Cosworth) +1 Lap
19. Geoff Brabham (Fittipaldi-Cosworth) +1 Lap
20. Brian Henton (Kojima-BRM) +1 Lap
Retired:
Jean-Pierre Jabouille (Renault) 42 Laps / Engine
David Purley (Wolf-Cosworth) 40 Laps / Engine
Didier Pironi (Shadow-Cosworth) 27 Laps / Accident
Carlos Pace (Williams-Cosworth) 26 Laps / Suspension
Gijs van Lennep (Ligier-Ferrari) 8 Laps / Accident
Mario Andretti (March-Ferrari) 8 Laps / Suspension
Keke Rosberg (Brabham-Alfa Romeo) 6 Laps / Suspension
Jacky Ickx (Wolf-Cosworth) 6 Laps / Clutch
Patrick Depailler (Tyrrell-Cosworth) 4 Laps / Accident
Alan Jones (March-Ferrari) 3 Laps / Gearbox

FL: Emerson Fittipaldi (Arrows-Cosworth) 1:47.298

Positives:
Ensign: The second place of Clay Regazzoni is a great result for a team who failed to score any points in 1977.

Emerson Fittipaldi: He was the fastest car in the field, but had to fight his way to the top after a bad qualifying.

Negatives:
Tyrrell: The new Tyrrell 008 is a complete failure. It will be a hard way back to the top.

Wolf: Slow car, double retirement.
