Thanks mate.
Anyway, it's time for another one of the Mad Uncle's Mad Race Reviews:
Clipsal 500 - Race 2
The Sunday race started off as sedately as the first race did, with the top four of James Courtney, Steven Richards, Russell Ingall and Will Davison holding station at the front of the field for the first 30-odd laps. Behind the top 4, the racing was as intense as one would expect from a V8 Supercar race but once the field settled into a natural rhythm, passing proved to be difficult, except when the field came across the struggling cars of Garth Tander and Craig Lowndes, both of whom were limping around the back of the field with considerable damage.
That all changed on lap 31, when the safety car was brought out for an incident between Jaime Whincup and Jonathon Webb, as the Paul Weel Racing driver collected the defending champ when the engine in the Triple 8 Falcon decided it was bored of trolling around at the back end of the top 20 and blew up. The resulting safety car put the field back in touch with the leaders, and led to the madhouse racing that caused the second caution of the afternoon a few laps later. As the midfield were busy battling away with each other, Jason Bargwanna tried to lap Lowndes at the fearsome turn 8, ended up clouting the second Triple 8 car and sending the former three time champion into a frightening accident, bringing Triple 8's miserable weekend to a merciful early end.
As Courtney and Richards led away at the second restart, Mark Winterbottom took full advantage to take 4th from Davison just before the pitstop phase, as both Tim Slade and Mark Skaife came in relatively early compared to the field. It turned out to be a monumental error as both got trapped a lap down when the third safety car came out for debris at the Senna chicane. The safety car ended up scrambling the rest of the field as well, as suddenly Shane van Gisbergen and Rick Kelly came from nowhere to be first and second, while the likes of Davison, Courtney and Richards ended up well outside the top 10 in the order.
Gisbergen lead with authority from what turned out to be the final restart of the day, with Rick Kelly close behind and Todd Kelly defending 3rd place from Winterbottom. As the top two streaked away from the field, it looked like the Kiwi superstar was going to become the youngest ever winner in V8 Supercar history, before he fell off the road at the final corner on the penultimate lap while trying to lap Tander for the third time that afternoon, handing the win to the jubilant Kelly. Winterbottom meanwhile had found his way past Todd to finish on the podium for the first time since switching to Holden.
Behind them, Jason Bargwanna and Paul Dumbrell both made up for horror Saturday runs to finish 5th and 6th, ahead of Steven Johnson and Russell Ingall, who was another victim of the 3rd safety car. Greg Murphy brought the second Tasman car home in 9th, ahead of Lee Holdsworth in the Valvoline Cummins cars. Of the victims of the final SC, Will Davison ended up in 12th place, while polesitter Courtney could only muster up 18th by race end. Steven Richards' afternoon meanwhile only got worse after the safety car, as he slumped to an abysmal 22nd place finish behind teammate Jorg Bergmeister.
