That was a brilliant race, despite not scoring points. Jörg's decision to put less downforce on the car paid off very well - we almost got Daniel in the end, and finishing 7th without much attrition is absolutely a great result. Niko's 10th place is still fine, his setup hampered him on the straightaways, but he was right behind John in the end.

12. Miko Fakkinen (Sauber) - 1:24.485

DNQ Johan Gustafsson (Gauthier) - 1:27.151
DNQ Geoff Grove (Minardi) - 1:27.194

Rory McAllister takes his first pole of the season after a heavy rainstorm washed out Q2 Jerez. A disastrous run for Tom Douglas left him in sixth while his teammate Takagi will start third. Times were close up and down the field as von Gottorp and Spokes were separated by 0.001 of a second and Baroncelli and Scrattenheim set the exact same time. Jose Alvarez started off his F1RGP2C career with a brilliant 14th place for Stewart. Yuuri Jougaseki and Poppy Whitechapel both impressed at the back of the field. Gustafsson and Grove DNQ'd.

However, I'll throw caution to the wind: the rain helped me and, besides, points are given on Sunday. I'm going to capitalize as much as I can on my privilege position tomorrow to make it a triumphant domestic race for me.

Once again, ignore the "Japanese GP" at TI Aida. The race was at Jerez.

Review:
Davies takes back-to-back wins on the trot at Jerez, leading home a McLaren 1-2 for his third career victory and the championship lead. McLaren also takes the lead in the Constructors' Championship.

This time I will be doing a team-by-team review.

McLaren: Well, this was about as perfect as it gets. Davies got the jump on McAllister at the start and never looked back, dominating the race without much trouble. McAllister was competent enough to remain in second place and jumps to a share for second place in the championship.

Ferrari: Ferrari took what they could get in Spain. Surprisingly, Kazuhiko Takagi bested his teammate handily to take yet another podium finish while Douglas fell back to a distant fourth. Takagi was also involved in a non-damaging collision with Poppy Whitechapel, earning both a penalty point.

Jordan: Leonhard von Gottorp was spectacular, scoring his first points of the season with a good drive to fifth. Cannon finished in eighth.

Williams: Williams' mediocre season (by their standards) continued. Moreno could only manage a sixth place finish. Last year's champion only has two points finishes, both sixths, thus far.

Benetton: Blah. Zimmer finished in the hallowed "Golden Papaya" spot this time around. Valsattis fell behind da Silva's Sauber and languished in 10th.

Sauber: Sauber got the better of DAMS this time around but they were unable to break through to get points.

DAMS: Meh.

Prost: Meh.

Arrows: What a joke. Both drivers retired with mechanical failures. It looks as if Arrows will not be scoring any points for a very long time.

Stewart: Jose Alvarez was brilliant… for 32 laps. He was running well in the midfield when his transmission failed. Alden retired within the first five laps with an engine explosion.

Minardi: Nowhere to be found.

Volga: Ditto.

Gauthier: Oh boy. Voeckler's been complaining all week about how his car is crap (it is) and how the team is going nowhere. This time, he had nobody to blame but himself. He missed his braking point at the first corner and lost his front wing, setting him back significantly at the outset of the race. Then, twenty laps later, he got involved in a bizarre collision with Pablo da Silva and Damon Cannon. Voeckler was holding up both drivers and da Silva tried a move on Cannon heading into the Veedol Chicane. Voeckler suddenly swerved right and was knocked straight off the track and into the barriers in spectacular fashion. Reject of the race for you Mr. Voeckler.

Spain:
Pole: Rory McAllister
Leaders:
Kazuhiko Takagi: 1
James Davies: 2-22
Rory McAllister: 23
James Davies: 24-
FL: James Davies

Penalties:
+2 to Frederic-Maxime Voeckler for blocking Tom Douglas, Pablo da Silva and Damon Cannon
+1 to Poppy Whitechapel for impeding Kazuhiko Takagi
+1 to Kazuhiko Takagi for causing a collision

Drivers' Championship Standings

James Davies starts on pole once again, but Takagi will share the front row with the McLaren in a surprising development. McAllister and Douglas are both demoted to Row 2. The DAMS cars performed exceptionally well, as did Ralf Alden of Stewart and Yuuri Jougaseki of Volga. Miko Fakkinen was disappointing for Sauber.

What, favoured son Ron got beaten by his teammate? It's okay because it's his home race, but if he ever even thinks of outperforming perfect Ron again, then he's fired!

Rory McAllister wrote:I had the pace to at least get on the front row, but you know, this is Monaco, it's a tight circuit, and I found traffic on my last flying lap and that precluded me from beating Takagi. Still, I start on the clean side so I hope I can make a quick getaway because it's difficult to overtake here and if I could take the lead from Davies I'd stand a very good chance.
