In the latest of a long line of rumours concerning the last remaining F1RWRS race seat in 2016, a strong rumour has come out of Spain that 2011 F1RWRS Champion and Alitalia third driver Nathanael Spencer may be about to sign a provisional five race contract with struggling minnows Dofasco. While it is believed this deal will only be in place until Canadian rookie Tommy Nash is available to drive in late may, it may prove to be a potential lifeline for Spencer, who has been in the RWRS wilderness since being sacked by Melrose Racing Team in 2014. Neither Dofasco nor Spencer were available to comment on the rumours.

La Gazzetta Dello Sport wrote:IBR refusing to release Spencer, Watkinson in pole position for Dofasco drive
With only one free seat left in F1RWRS for 2016, all silly season rumours have been pointed squarely at Dofasco Racing, who have yet to fill their other seat alongside Alexey Buyvolov. Team principal Grzegosz Sobczyk has indicated Nathanael Spencer was one of the main candidates to drive for the Polish squad, however IBR CEO Alessandro Linari, whom Spencer is contracted to as test and reserve driver for the coming season, has refuted any suggestion of Spencer making a switch to Dofasco on loan.
"Spencer is going nowhere," said Linari. "He has a full programme for this season. He is not just sitting on the sidelines doing nothing, he has a full programme with IBR, he's our go-to-guy if anything happens with our current lineup. We won't give such an asset away in a hurry."
One name that Sobczyk has repeated several times however is Ashley Watkinson. The Englishman was released by Kingfisher Racing at the end of the season, but with three career wins to his name, is regarded as the best driver still without a contract for the upcoming season. A source close to negotiations between the two parties gave Gazzetta an exclusive insight into the possible Watkinson-Dofasco deal.
"This deal has been very slow up until very recently," he explained. "Watkinson's representation has been drawing out the talks quite badly for some time now. But, let's just say, we are getting some divine intervention. The negotiation is being sped up by an external source to make sure the deal is concluded and Watkinson is in the Dofasco for 2016. Nash is not longer in the picture after this."
With only a few days left until the official pre-season tests and still no contract in place for the second Dofasco seat, their F2RWRS driver Diego Alvarez Torrente has been nominated as test driver instead, but may not see the track if a deal is struck in time for said tests.

Nash to call it a career Former Aston Martin driver hampered by injuries sustained at Road America It really is quite bizarre to retire at the age of 21, but that is what Canadian Tommy Nash is doing. Nash, a F2RWRS race winner, and who has three F1RWRS starts to his name, announced on Twitter that he was retiring from open-wheeled Motorsport, saying that his injuries are "too severe" to consider returning to the series. The full tweet read: "Leg is 2 hurt to continue in 2RS. Will get year off and return in NSCR nxt yr. Cya then " Brett Johnson, head of Aston Martin, confirmed this in a phone interview, saying, "Yes, Tommy said that he won't be returning to open wheels, given his injury. His status has worsened and he has been advised to give it more rest, and that it would be incredibly unwise to return to a car of our type. Frankly, I cannot blame him for making such a decision."
Mistakes in potatoes will ALWAYS happen Trulli bad puns... IN JAIL NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU SCREAM
Sobczyk understands the Nash decision, and Tojo and Mackintosh to Dofasco? Dofasco Racing team owner acknowledged that he understood the decision Tommy Nash,at the end of their sporting career due to injury (Nash still was not able to recover from the accident). Sobczyk admitted as such is sport and drivers often bear a considerable price of being a racing driver, "I can understand Tommy's decision Car racing is a dangerous sport, and even the smallest mistake can cost you a career, We wish him good luck in the new way of life" Sobczyk also spoke about the situation of contracting a second driver, said that the game was only two drivers namely Steven Mackintosh and Hiroto Tojo, the team was not able to persuade Ashley Watkinson who is not interested in driving for Dofasco, Sobczyk said he still talks from Mackintosh and Tojo and said that one of the two will be the Dofasco second driver in the F1RWRS 2016 season

Dofasco F2RWRS driver and Astro Racing Stars prodigy Diego Álvarez Torrente has stated in a press event for Astro that he would be willing to test F1RWRS machinery in the absence of a Dofasco driver, although ruling himself out of the seat. The Polish team have had a torrid time finding a partner for highly rated Alexey Buyvolov, and their all-or-nothing approach to change their fortunes in 2016 hasn't managed to bear fruit at this time.
"If Dofasco don't get a driver in time, I'm perfectly happy to test the car. However, at this stage I'm concentrating 100% on making a strong challenge in F2RWRS. I genuinely think that the team will be in the hunt for a good number of points next season, and that's a challenge I want to lead." said Torrente. "I haven't made a plan for 2017 yet; I had in my mind I'd like two years in F2, but if this year goes well why not jump up into the top division? Of course, the time and team would have to be right for me."
Although Dofasco haven't managed to successfully lure Ashley Watkinson, former champion Nathanael Spencer or a recently-retired Tommy Nash to the team, they are currently courting former Mecha driver Steven Mackintosh and former RoLFS driver Hiroto Tojo. Torrente's teammate and compatriot Judd McAllister has also thrown his hat into the ring, having recently secured some potential backers. The Dofasco seat is currently the only vacant seat on the grid, although Tropico appear to have a berth from Round 4 onwards; Yuka Katayama has only signed a contract for the first three races.

Speculation that former F2RWRS champion Mitchell Macklin may be about to make a surprise return to the F2RWRS intensified today, as British media is reporting on rumours that the 20 year old may be about to join the Fusion Motorsports program for the 2016 season. While there is no official word as yet, it is believed that Macklin's manager, F1RWRS team owner Daniel Melrose, is trying to make the 11th-hour deal as a last-ditch to save the 2014 F2RWRS champion's faltering career, which have hit new lows over pre-season testing with the Prospec cars struggling for pace. While the Australian currently has a season-long contract with the former F1RWRS champions, it is expected that Melrose will pay out of his own pocket to terminate the contract, leaving the team able to pick a second paydriver in order to turn their fortunes around.

After Kingfisher Racing had to withdraw from F2RWRS due to unfortunate circumstances, Fusion Motorsports will return to RWRS competition in the second tier. Having pledged to keep on talented Dutchman Martin van der Maeyede, the Bath-based team have been on the hunt for a talented second driver to bolster the team. Although Mitchell Macklin has been touted as a possible driver, there could be issues with Prospec allowing the young Australian to leave.
"I'm really upset that this is the manner we entered, and we hope to see Kingfisher return one day" said team principal Jake Legge. "However, we've got a job to do and we've got to grasp this chance. We've agreed to keep Martin on, and we've been looking into Macklin as well. However, I don't know whether Prospec will let him go or not, so we've been looking into a few other drivers."
It is believed that Fusion are also pursuing IFRC driver Dorien Lamberigts, Revolution reserve Marie Simon and Dutch drivers Micko Glotch and Markus van de Schoot if the move for Macklin doesn't work out. In addition, the team will most likely retain the Holden engines (possibly under a VXR badge if agreed), but may opt for a Zytek chassis.

Autocar wrote:Jones Racing Group to enter road car production in 2017
As the 2016 motorsport season gears up to get underway in a matter of weeks, Jones Racing Group owner Sammy Jones has announced that his company will begin designing and manufacturing road-going sportscars in less than 12 months time. According to Jones, over the past year, the Group have been carrying out preliminary feasibility studies to determine the viability of a road car project.
Now, with it being given the green light, Jones is entering into a partnership with David Marshall who two years ago attempted to re-launch the Triumph marquee with the aid of BMW. Despite having bought the rights to the name, and established a facility to operate from, Marshall lost a lengthy court battle with the German manufacturer after it emerged that despite having bought the Triumph name and brand, he had failed to acquire the rights to license its use outside of the UK, which remained in BMW's hands. Consequently, having failed to wrestle control of the worldwide license, Marshall was forced to abandon the Triumph project and has since set about establishing his operation under a new name.
Jones and Marshall had previously worked together when Triumph joined the tender process for new F2RWRS engine suppliers prior to the 2015 season. Jones agreed a preliminary deal to become the works team supplied with Triumph engines, which would have ultimately been almost identical to the BMW engines already supplied in the series. It was this aspect of Triumph's bid which ended its chances of securing one of the two slots made available, but the impending court case later on in the year would have ended their involvement anyway. As a result, Jones took a supply of Aston Martin engines, but for 2016 has switched to become Ford's factory entrant in the series.
Now it seems, the Ford ties are set to go deeper with the American manufacturer likely to supply the engines which will power the road cars designed and built by the Jones Racing Group, with Marshall coming in to oversee the project and report to Jones himself. As of yet it is unclear what title Marshall will hold within the new organisational structure, but an insider at Jones' main facility in Banbury told Autocar that it would be of C-level status.
What is clear is that the road cars will be designed and assembled at the Coventry factory built by Marshall back in 2014 which has laid dormant ever since the court case with BMW. Reports have indicated that a number of Triumph prototypes remain at the facility, and sources have hinted that these prototypes may well form the basis of new Jones Racing Group road cars, but this information has yet to be confirmed at the time of going to press.
Along with any ideas of what the cars will look like and any specifications, Jones refused to discuss any details of what the new road car project will be named. There have been rumours that the Jones name will grace both the new road cars alongside the race cars that the company is synonymous with, but when questioned on this, the factory insider told Autocar that this was wide of the mark.
Whatever brand name the Group chooses, this announcement has created a stir amongst the automotive world, as Jones attempts to follow in Formula 1 team McLaren's footsteps in trying to replicate their on-track success in road cars for the general public. Autocar will be following the story closely as more details emerge, and you can rest assured that you, our readers, will be the first to hear about any new developments.

Our sources say that while the official paperwork hasn't quite been signed off yet, there are only formalities in the way of MRT hiring another French driver after the departure of Philippe Nicolas at the end of last season.
"We are in discussions with MRT," said Benoit's manager Jeremy-Etienne Voeckler, yesterday. "We are confident of a deal being struck. Our interests are mutually aligned at the moment, so hopefully a deal will be done soon."
The deal comes after Alexey Buyvolov snubbed the works BMW team, apparently not even answering calls from the top team despite driving for a team in pre-qualifying.
La Gazzetta Dello Sport wrote:Dofasco offered van Nieuwenhuijzen in exchange for Buyvolov extension?
Rumours have been swirling in the RWRS paddock that Alitalia is trying to block the rumoured Buyvolov to MRT move at all costs, and are said to be offering Dofasco young talent Bastiaan van Nieuwenhuijzen to replace Hiroto Tojo as an incentive to hang on to Buyvolov.
Van Niewuenhuijzen finished 2nd overall in F2RWRS last season, and had been on track for a podium finish last weekend in Adelaide before suffering a technical issue with his car.
There is some logic to the move from Dofasco's point of view however; Tojo is widely expected to act like an anchor keeping Buyvolov in Pre-Qualifying and unable to escape, thus only paying out half as many credits for both drivers. However, a Buyvolov-van Nieuwenhuijzen lineup is far more likely to make the cut on Fridays, ensuring Buyvolov pays out the full amount of his sponsorship and therefore earns the team a similar amount of money without the need for a second paying driver.
Spencer takes Alitalia seat on permanent basis After hiring Foxdale driver Martin McFry for the opening round of the season to replace the injured David Koczo, Alitalia have confirmed they will swap back drivers with the British squad, with Nathanael Spencer taking the reins of the #27 car for the forseeable future. The 2011 champion has not won a race since 2014, and failed to make it past the opening lap of the race at Adelaide, but looked fast in pre-season testing.
Prospec on the verge of losing second driver in two weeks! While MRT pursues their primary target Alexey Buyvolov, the champion team is also making backup plans in case Dofasco refuse to play along. The main backup is thanks to lead driver Mark Dagnall's father, Chris, who is the manager of current Prospec wheelman Fredo Mestolio. With Prospec appearing to be firmly rooted in Pre-Qualifying, and MRT in need of some cash, the reigning champions may use their connections to forcibly remove Mestolio from his Prospec contract and replace Kay Lon.
A third option is Jean-Luc Schiller, who finished on the podium in Adelaide with the Autodynamics team. The Red Bull-backed team has an R&D agreement with MRT, and Schiller may move up to the 'senior' squad, although it is not clear whom Autodynamics would replace the Swiss driver with.

The American driver was heavily linked to a promotion to F2RWRS with IBR towards the end of last season, before compatriot Dan Greenlaw was announced for Scuderia Alitalia. However, with Walsh's form continuing to improve, and two slots anticipated to be opening up at the end of the year at IBR's F2RWRS programme, he continues to be linked to the Italian squad.

Reports indicate that Davies could be on the move due to sponsorship problems, but he could also be sacked for performance reasons as well. Brett Johnson, owner of Aston Martin racing, declined to comment on the issue, leaving Jordan Davies' future up in the air. As of the press deadline, Davies is still expected to race for Aston Martin at Austria.
