I also do a lot of recreation driving as for now my RX-8 sees most of its miles on mountain roads and racetracks. I do all the maintenance work on my cars and in fact have designed some custom pieces for my RX-8 to improve its performance.

Goodness me. Wonderful, congratulations. One of my cousins lives in New Jersey and owns a drag race-prepared 1980's RX-7 - not your cup of tea, but nice to see there's a bit of following for rotaries over there.

On a sidenote I also love the WRC and am a big Petter Solberg fan. In fact I might be slightly more of a WRC fan than a F1 fan in terms of watching the cars go round, but the soap opera of F1 makes it a more fun series to follow.

My BS was in mechanical engineering and my MEng was in systems engineering. I have a concentration in vehicle design. A friend and I started this team in 2003: http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/04/corn ... lma-mater/ On the design side, I was responsible for the overall car packaging and designed the frame among other systems.

My RX-8 has some nice bits to it. The item I'm most proud of is my custom designed coilovers. I picked the spring rates to use and determined the damping curve. With this setup, my car is incredibly easy to drive, has much less roll, and still has stock levels of suspension travel. The ride is barely stiffer than a stock RX-8 despite running springs that are almost 3 times as stiff as the stock ones.

Currently development of my RX-8 has stopped because I realized the platform is too large and heavy for me to accomplish what I want to do. Also, I'm looking at a further three years in law school coming up in August and so I want to save some money for that. However, in two to four years time, I'm planning to either buy the upcoming Toyota "FT-86", a new Mazda RX car if it's smaller and lighter than the RX-8, or buy a third generation Mazda Miata, convert it to a stressed roof car, and drop a rotary engine into it. Obviously the Miata project will require some money...

Sadly I don't get BTCC or WTCC here in the states. I've seen some clips and it does look like a riot.

We used to get BTCC back when it was in its own heyday (late 90's when there were 7 works teams). We also had the WTCC predecessor European championship shown in winter but I don't think it was picked up after that... probably due to an influx of that redneck, gun-totin', sister- *, circle-drivin' good-ol'-American NASCAR wrestling, err, racing programming.

* Even if I wrote bathplugging in there, that would sound all wrong and be even more inappropriate

The first season I remember watching was when Andretti won the championship (but that just shows how old I am). Then I went through the phase of supporting a driver (Alain Prost). Now I just enjoy watching racing.

Fav drivers: Any underdog / aggressive drivers (Montoya, Villeneuve, Koboyashi).
Not Fav: Repetitive drivers (Raikonnen etc)

I, like quite a few here, don't have any particular favourite driver - I do like them all and each for very different reasons.

Favourite previous drivers: My first introduction to F1 was during my childhood in the 80s, so it is EXCEPTIONALLY biased towards that period and modern-era drivers. Pierluigi Martini is my all-time hero, and I would kill to get his autograph or meet him in person. I very much liked the 'balls out' fighting drivers who really threw everything at the race: Jos Verstappen, Keke Rosberg, Gilles Villeneuve, Jean Alesi. I like the crazy ones: De Cesaris, Arnoux. And the gentlemen: De Angelis, Laffite.

Favourite team: I have consistently been a fan of Minardi ever since Pierluigi's single lap in the lead at Portugal in 1989. I always supported the team in its various guises and various levels of funcing (or lack thereof), but my heart always leans more towards the traditional Minardi days under the ownership of Gian Carlo Minardi and not during Paul Stoddart's time. His soapbox antics towards the end of the team's life were very tiresome and did the constructor a great disservice and undid a lot of what it had built in the preceding years.

That's probably one the rotary specialist in Ireland never came across. I was at his house once and he had a stack of about 40 rotary casings one on top of the other in his garage, as well as 3 complete engines that had been broken by various acts of idiocy (such as constantly redlining one straight after a rebuild). He also had about 5 3rd-gen RX7s is his garden.

I started watching in 1994 when catching a glimpse of the Pacific Grand Prix. Little did I know the first full race I'd see was on the Black Weekend of Imola '94. {RejectSteve - 4 posts from top of page 2}

The first F1 race start I ever saw was also Imola '94...

I don't have a long enough list to warrant separating into "current" and "previous" and the way I support them such a categorisation doesn't make sense anyway*, so I'll just categorise by type, along with when I started supporting them. I've only taken a driver off any of my lists once, and that's noted

Favourite Team: Jordan/Midland/Spyker/Force India/whatever-it's-called-this-year (lap 55, Spain 1998)

Favourite Drivers: Damon Hill (started supporting him two-thirds of the way through France 1993), David Coulthard (Spain 1994), Johnny Herbert and Martin Brundle (Australia 1996), Jenson Button (Australia 2000), Giancarlo Fisichella (Tuesday before Monaco 2001), Anthony Davidson (Hungary 2002), Ralph Firman and Justin Wilson (Australia 2003), Tiago Monteiro (Australia 2005) and Lewis Hamilton (Australia 2007).

Ex-Favourites: Eddie Irvine (started supporting Australia 1996, removed from support list December 1998 after reading one too many foul-mouthed and badly-formed attacks against fellow drivers).

Blacklist: Juan Pablo Montoya (foul-mouthed attacks against drivers), Nelson Piquet Jr (cynical powerplays completely inappropriate to a driver, serious incompetence and still expected sympathy and second chances).

- Vettel.
- Jenson Button, and have ever since the start of 06, when I really started to watch F1. I've always gotten the feeling that he was the most genuine person on the grid until Vettel came around. Even when he was a prettyboy...
- Sebastien Bourdais, because his whining is hilarious. He needs to stay in F1, dammit!! Preferably in a top team so he can fail in a really good car and then come up with excuses! His are high quality art!
- Kamui Kobayashi. Banzai!
- Juan Pablo Montoya, but admittedly I like him a lot more because he's in NASCAR. He was really fun to watch on track, though!
- Jacques Villeneuve, because his pitfalls are funny, and because I do hold some respect for Jacques as an F1 pundit. F1 needs more oddballs. He is also quite funny when he doesn't do well and whines.
- Gilles Villeneuve, he was going to die behind the wheel of an F1 car, the only question was when! In the old races I've seen him in he was marvelous.
- Yuji Ide, for being really crappy.

Drivers I Love To Hate:
- Lewis Hamilton, a whiny brat. Bring that sh*t to NASCAR, Lewis Waaaahmilton. I probably would like him a bit more if the team didn't coddle him like crazy.
- Nelson Piquet Jr., but I want to see him come to NASCAR and see Mike Skinner stuff him into a garbage can.
- Michael Schumacher, because he's just a snake. He's fun to watch, but he's a cheat.
- David Coulthard, Overhyped mediocrity. A grumpy number two driver who thinks he's better than he really is. Unlike Barrichello or Bourdais, he didn't provide humorous whinges so he needed to gtfo.
- Fernando Alonso, for being a bit of a snake of a person as well.

Favorite Inactive driver: Jacques Villeneuve (I've been a fan of his after seeing him win the 95 CART National Title and the 1995 Indy 500.) Alex Zanardi (If he would have been in the right car he could have won some F1 races and or become the World Champion). Also after what happened to him Eurospeedway and the fact that well now he is retired but still raced after that, man that's dedication there. Scott Speed (I felt he could have done better if he had a better car.)

Non Favorite Active Driver: Alonso (I always though someone should take a pin and deflate his giant head.) Button (I never really liked him that much he is overrated in my opinion, and I told my dad the only reason he became the Champion was because of the car, and I said that if McLaren doesn't have a good car next year he won't do very well.)

YOU have a rule...??? If only life were that simple... There is never a time when I can pluck only one from each category to support. This 2010 season, for example, I will be supporting Button and Rosberg (both to beat Schumi...), McLaren, Virgin, US F1 and Williams (Williams because I have since I started watching F1, US F1 because of the reject potential, Virgin for the potential innuendo and McLren cos of Button). Underdogs covered amongst those, I hope.
