The New Boys on the Block-YOU Make the Decision.
Re: The New Boys on the Block-YOU Make the Decision.
Issue 1: Shift focus to our 1984 challenger immediately. We've already made enough of an impression this year with our performances, and we do not have any outstanding sponsor obligations to fulfill.
Issue 2: I think it'd be wise to remain a one-car outfit for one more year. Even with our upcoming Guinness sponsorship, I'm not entirely convinced that we have the resources to build, develop, and operate two cars without compromising our competitiveness.

Issue 1: Right now. I doubt we can better our results this season.
Issue 2: One car, two is probably just too much money.

Issue 1: Start working now! I see now chance of scoring any points this year! Next year we will need points so start working! Hurry up!
Issues 2: I would stay with 1 car. We are a small team and should try to get one good car for next year. If it works we can expands for 1985!

1. Right now
2. Yes, we need to be a serious team. The second car can be given to a hot prodigy with no money demands or to someone who brings sponsors.

Nelson Piquet somehow escaped his rather...large accident with only a broken pinkie finger. Still,he insited he enter this race just in case he has a shot at keeping his quickly disappearing championship hopes alive. And boy,did he keep them alive. A simply superb qualifying from the unluckiest man on the grid barely beat Alain Prost's time to the pole.Nigel Mansell and Derek Daly did their part for Lotus-Renault with a good qualifying effort,as Niki Lauda hauled the N/A Cosworth in it's last race with McLaren into the third row of the grid alongside Riccardo Patrese, with Rene Arnoux and Jacques Laffite behind them.
The ones that were seriously behind, though, were the Ferraris. Reason? Both of their engines had almost zero turbo pressure ,something that is not good on a fast circuit like the Oesterreichring. And with their downforce not being top notch, they had to settle in 16th and 20th,somewhere in Theodore and Empire range. Speaking of Empire, they had a disastrous session, with the car's hydraulics failing after just three laps, and missed qualifying by a tenth of a second, only their second DNQ in an impressive first season.

If we are starting work on next years chassis know we should really think about getting an engine, then we can design the car around the engine instead of trying to make one fit

This would be a good decision...Adrian Newey once said:" You have 3 fixtures on the car(Driver, Engine and fuel tank). Around this 3 fixtures you design your car!"
So if we wanna have a good car we should look for an engine!!!

Maybe we can lure both Honda and Johansson away from Spirit...

I think we should go for at least one more experinced driver!
Pair him with one of those young drivers(Senna, Bellof, Berger...) and we have a wonderful team! The young driver will learn much from the experienced one and also could force him to go on the limit by beeing quick as hell!

1983 Austrian Grand Prix
If you don't mind, read the German Grand Prix report before flipping over to this race report. Then read this race report. Then you'll have to agree with the next sentence. This race is the exact opposite of the last race.
Yep,this time it was Renault who pulled off a dominant 1-2 and Ferrari failing fantastically, with their only saving grace coming in the form of Elio de Angelis salvaging a point to keep a lead over championship rival Jacques Laffite, who shot his way past everyone, set lap times not far off from qualifying, and left everyone in the dust,as teammate Alain Prost did likewise, though in a slower fashion to finish second. Third came as a bit of a surprise,as that person was....Andrea de Cesaris. The last four races for him this season have been eventful: Get podium, obtain one-race ban, serve ban, podium. Not even a sine curve has had more ups and downs than that.Niki Lauda showd that Naturally aspirated cars are still capable of frightfully fast pace, and with the N/A cars still being easier to control,it was as simple as keeping pace to finish fourth. Fifth was Keke Rosberg, marking a welcome return to points for both the defending champion and Williams after their 1-2 finish at Monaco. And in sixth place was Elio de Angelis, who spent half the day stuck behind a defending-mad Stefan Johansson and the other half charging up through the field. Following him was Rene Arnoux who passed Nelson Piquet approaching the line. In fact,Piquet was running sixth on the final lap,but fuel ran dry, thus freewheeling to eigth after a pole in qualifying. He would have lost more had Eddie Cheever monumentally slowed down himself and Riccardo Patrese by attempting to force a last-lap divebomb with four laps to go at Hella-Licht chicane, sending Patrese for a pirouette and Cheever up a grass bank.Thierry Boutsen was the last car to finish on the lead lap...barely.
Danny Sullivan mus have been wondering where his early season form has yondered off to after finishing 12th,John Watson was unable to match his teammate's raw pace and a trip to the runoff area at Hella Licht left him in unlucky 13th.Teo Fabi was 14th,Jean-Pierre Jarier was 15th after being slower than everyone recorded through Boschkurve throughout the race using a new-fangled speed recorder.Raul Boesel was 17th and Corrado Fabi was eighteenth, yet got more screentime than probably anyone else throughout the weekend. Why? His Osella was specially chosen to be the test car for the lastest innovation in Motorsport: the on-board camera, which made its debut this weekend and was lucky enough for Fabi to qualify to get some spectacular shots.
Now to those that retired:Derek Warwick was running eigth with two laps to go when his engine seized. Stefan Johansson was impressing in the Spirit, doing every move imaginable to keep Elio de Angelis behind him after a lightning quick start, and spending the remainder of his race well ahead of John Watson until the suspension collapsed after bouncing on some kerbs at Hella Licht. Nigel Mansell and Derek Daly were running high up until transmission failures after 4 laps ended their days,Michele Alboreto spun out at the exit of Jochen Rindt,Marc Surer's electrics went haywire and Manfred Winklehock was unfortunate enough to be caught up on the outside of Boschkurve when Teo Fabi wanted to make his way past on the inside, slid up the track,Winklehock reacted and ended upin the wall unhurt. Finally,Patrick Tambay can only hope for something amazing to get his championship challenge back on track.

Re: The New Boys on the Block-YOU Make the Decision.
Wow, De Angelis and Laffite are really close to each other in the championship! And there's no "Best 11 results," if I'm correct, so this will certainly go down to the wire!
Re: The New Boys on the Block-YOU Make the Decision.
Don't forget Prost, and with a few DNF, even Lauda could come back to the game. I can't see the potential in Tambay though.

F1 Headlines
Theodore to pull out
The news was announced a long time ago that the Theodore team were not financially stable, and things are more than just financially unstable. Teddy Yip reportred that he will be pulling his team out of Formula One after the Italian Grand Prix, citing not only financial but personal issues as well. The Theodore outfit started in 1976,entering two cars for Ronnie Peterson and Hans-Joachim Stuck. Many talented drivers have driven for the team previously, such as current Ferrari ace Patrick Tambay and defending World Champion Keke Rosberg.
Driver News
Things are rather quiet in the driver market to start off, with only one piece of news:Ferrari announced that Elio de Angelis has signed a contract that will keep him in the team until the end of 1986.
--------------------------------------------------------------
August 20,1983.
Thomas Travers has had a rough few days.Short nights,DNQs and an incident with a boxer dog and a Coke can that shall not be explained further. He had all the looks of someone stressed:unkempt hair, tie slightly off to the side and a rather frazzled clipboard. However,he had one thing that most stressted people do not:a Four-part plan.
Part 1 was already completed;start work on the 1984 car, which he called the EMP-02,for continuity's sake. Parts 2 and 3,however,would be a little more tricky. Part 2 was to set on the team's focus for next year. This year was about getting started, but next year was when the real options would come into play. Create an ultra-reliable car for finishing races well? Go superspeed with all other teams starting to splash on turbocharged engines,or play the handling game to make sure the car isn't as drivable as a ceiling fan. Now was the time to choose, with the materials and workers and whatnot at the ready.
Part 3 was more difficult, yet simpler. Engines. The Hart engine was not bad,but other engines will soon have better engines when they get a grip of turbo engines, putting Hart at a disadvantage, they're cheap, though, which could help in signing decent drivers, and are the lightest of the bunch. Honda were a returning name in the sport, and have already secured a big name signing in Williams. Honda bring something new and reasonably powered to the plate, but with their focus on Williams, other teams that sign on may not get upgrades much later than Williams,if at all. BMW have a powerful engine for next season, probably the most powerful of next season, but the engines also come with a lot of weight and also the reliability of a Lada.Which is not reliable at all. Renault have an engine that has slightly less power than the BMW and as heavy, but is guaranteed not to break down. It all comes at a relatively high cost, though. Alfa Romeo have a decently powered engine with generally balanced out stats all around, apart from a minor dip in reliaibility, though upgrades to the engine are quick and effective. And then there's Ford, which is cheap and cheerful, especially when your idea of cheerful is running at the back 10 seconds behind the polesitter.
Thomas Travers took all these into consideration, and started to ring up some people. At least he was making progress...
-----------------------------------------------------------------
ISSUE 1:What will the focus on 1984 be?
a) Reliability
b) POWER
c) Handling
ISSUE 2:What engine should Empire choose in 1984?
a)Hart--(Low Power,High Handling,High Reliability,Low Cost)
b)Honda--(Average, No or Little Upgrades through Season)
c)BMW--(Most Power,Low Handling and Very Low Reliability)
d)Renault--(Good Power,Low Handling,High Reliability,High Cost)
e)Alfa Romeo--(Average,Below Average Reliability,Many Upgrades)
f)Ford--(Cheap and Cheerful...without the cheerful)

This should be a good combination espacialy for young drivers! The cost are not too high and we should make some good progress!

Re: The New Boys on the Block-YOU Make the Decision.
1) Handling. That's what the chassis is supposed to do, let the engine take care of the power.
2) Honda. They are the best long-term choice here, especially if we can wrestle manufacturer support from Spirit. The BMW and Renault are also attractive options, but the Renault is too cost-prohibitive and the BMW too unreliable. We need an affordable and reliable engine, and therefore the Honda is the best option.

Honda has already signed a long-term agreement with Williams. We're getting second-tier engines, with very little manufacturer support.

2. Can you give more details about engine prices? How much is the difference between Hart, Honda and Renault?
For now I'll vote for Honda, but this is a matter of change, depending on price.

1983 Dutch Grand Prix Qualifying
We should not count anybody out of the championship at this stage, and there is definitely no way to tell who is going to win the championship among the top 4. This makes the final 4 races all to play for,and boy,did Alain Prost play today. Go out,set lap, take pole, return to pits. That was all that Alain Prost did in today's qualifying. No banker laps. A real sight to behold. Riccardo Patrese came in second, though he's the odd one out in the top 5 as the rest-Patrick Tambay,Elio de Angelis and Jacques Laffite-are all aiming for the best result possible. Behind this fiesty trio is Derek Daly, having come back strong after his injury.Michele Alboreto is in 7th,leading a trio of Ford powered cars with Keke Rosberg and Derek Warwick, proving you don't need turbos to be competitive. In 10th,barely ahead of John Watson,is the remarkable Manfred Winklehock in the ATS,which is proving to be a real dark horse on its best day,yet a real backmarker on its worst. He scraped ahead of John Watson in McLaren. You may notice that the egnne in the McLaren has changed. It is now a TAG-badged Porsche V6 engine in the car,and has done well in tests, though unfamiliarity struck with Watson as he struggled around the track.
Those that struggle even more, though, was Nelson Piquet in the Brabham, who was suffering from major oversteer despite setup correction after setup correction, and on his third stint out,he spun out at Tarzanbocht, ending up between the two Theodores in the standings. Thierry Boutsen, arguably, had a worse time.He spun off at Hugenholtz on only his second lap,not only bringing out a short red flag to the session, but a permanent red flag on Boutsen's progress during qualifying and the weekend, his one banker lap only being enough to outpace Acheson's RAM.
