Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - 2013 Italy

Post by Shizuka »

based on the assumption that, at any moment in time, there is a non-zero probability that even the slowest, most inexperienced and least reliable of underdogs might win the race. That under every rock, there might be a gold nugget. This is the award for that first podium that we all celebrate, for the overtake no-one was expecting, for Charles Pic's first win. This is the award, in short, for the driver or team that makes you go "Woah! Where did THAT come from?!".

Just remember: this is a feel-good award, that will focus on nothing but track action.
Usual rules: everyone gets two votes. First vote is worth 10 points, the second 6.

Gutierrez - For looking like a proper F1 driver at several points during the race.
Pic - Seems to have driven a nice tidy race and been the best of the tail end charlies.

1. Nico Hülkenberg: Awesome qualifying, followed by a very good race.
2. Daniel Ricciardo: Another impressive performance from him, seventh in both qualifying and the race. He is now ahead of Vergne in the points (although Vergne was unlucky today).

Hülkenberg.
That car is one of the worst Sauber cars, (the 2003 one was also weak) yet he dragged it to fifth.
Montezemolo should take note of him. Replace him with Bianchi. Give the team free engines in return. ;)

1.- Nico Huklkenberg: The Hulk managed not only P3 on qualy, but put the Sauber into the points ahead of the big guns of Lotus and McLaren. Herculean effort.

2.- Lewis Hamilton: Almost like was listening Back into the 90's (eurobeat rocks!), Lewis run like the old times, from the back, to rescue valuable points.

Merits on for Esteban Gutierrez (after all, he did manage to be close to the top 10) and Mark Webber (hold Alonso in the start and then harrased him at the end)

The Clash of the Titans Award goes to Fernando Alonso: What a pass over Webber!

1. Hulkenburg: Like the NBC commentary team were saying. "This may be the drive that get's him a top team seat."

2. Hamilton: Despite all his problems, he still managed to score points.

Honorable Mentions:

Webber: Excellent start, and finish in what will be his final Grand Prix in Europe.

Gutierrez: Almost made it into the top 10.

Hulkenberg, easily his best drive of 2013

Ricciardo: held off Maccas

I won't give it to Hamilton, because IIDOTR is supposed to be unexpected. If Alonso finishing 2nd from 10th at Spa wasn't IIDOTR-worthy, neither was this.

Didn't Jamie and Enoch consider giving ROTR in 2000 to a Finnish fan waving his national flag, blocking the shot of the podium on world feed?

This one got to go to the Hülk. Drives like this were the reason when he won his A1GP title back in the day.

1) Nico Hulkenburg: Excellent weekend, dragging a recalcitrant car somewhere where it would not ordinarily be in qualifying and not dropping back too far in the race.
2) Daniel Ricciardo: He hasn't done a Perez with the weight of expectation on him in the weekend after his confirmation for Red Bull. His performance in the race was steady and netted some useful points to boot.

1. Nico Hulkenberg - Where the hell did that come from? I knew he was good, but I didn't think he was capable of dragging that car that high.
2. Daniel Ricciardo - Good solid race, some decent points for Toro Rosso.

1. Hulkenberg
2. Hamilton

You could actually argue there's a case for Vettel, given that Red Bull haven't previously been great at this track (although their low downforce package this season seems rock solid) and that he managed to pull out a very decent lead even though he flat spotted his front right on corner 1 of lap 1.

1:Nico Hulkenberg---This guy's the next Schumacher,not Vettel.

2:Jean-Eric Vergne--Apart from that off in Q3,he proved that Red Bull should have taken longer to make a decision.Damn near topping the timesheets in Q1,and then pulling of some amazing defensive driving before his premature end to the race.

1. Nico Hulkenberg. What a drive. What a driver. Hulkenberg needs to be in a frontrunning team next year. Anything less than that would be nothing short of a travesty.

2. Fernando Alonso. Solid drive from 5th to 2nd keeps Vettel in sight, albeit barely.

This. But I have a feeling that even if Red Bull left the fight longer, this was a little too late.

1. Hulkenberg, by far given the poor quality of the Sauber.
2. Grosjean, no crashing despite starting 13th and finishing with an 8th. I consider that improbable given what he did last season.
