Re: NewF1 2013 Season - Canadian Qualfying Results

Post by AustralianStig »

Here we are in Montreal, where Kobayashi will be looking to build on the momentum from his win on the streets of Monaco, while Timo Glock will be hoping for another consistent finish to hold on to his championship lead. Don't forget about Fernando Alonso - his two retirements have hurt his championship position but he's by no means out of contention. Robin Frijns today makes his debut appearance, filling in for the banned Sergio Perez for Scorpion.

Q1:
On a quite warm day it's Glock who is first to take to the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. It's a 1:14.949 - we're expecting pole to be a low 1:14 so Sauber are looking average but not setting the world alight. Kobayashi beats the team immediately with 1:14.717, then Alonso goes even better with 1:14.343 - that could be the time to beat for Q1! Enter Mark Webber, who drove the lap of his life to produce a 1:14.330 - he'll hope he can replicate that in Q3! Massa will be happy with his time, as will the Mercedes drivers who seem to finally have a good car. Sauber and Force India look off the pace, and it's Daniel Ricciardo who misses out on Q2, just pipped by less than a tenth by his teammate Vergne. Good news for Robins Frijns - while he's qualified last he was still within the 107% and will make his 1st F1 start tomorrow.

24. Robin Frijns (Scorpion)           1:18.901 (+4.571)

107% time: 1:19.533

Q2:
Mark Webber's lap in Q1 looked almost flawless, so he may struggle to match that pace again...and he does struggle, only posting a 1:14.694! Alonso also goes a little slower than Q1, with a 1:14.457, which ended up being the quickest time. The Williams of Maldonado surprised everyone to easily make Q3, nearly half a second quicker than his teammate. Aside from that, there were few surprises, and the Mercs will be glad to both make Q3, along with Raikkonen's Lotus, who just pipped Grosjean by half a hundredth of a second! The table is set for a very close Q3!

1.  Fernando Alonso (Ferrari)        1:14.457
2.  Felipe Massa (Ferrari)           1:14.509 (+0.051)

10. Kimi Raikkonen (Lotus)           1:14.811 (+0.353)

11. Romain Grosjean (Lotus)          1:14.816 (+0.358)
12. Nico Hulkenberg (Sauber)         1:14.895 (+0.437)

17. Jean-Eric Vergne (Toro Rosso)    1:15.730 (+1.273)

Q3:
The Ferraris were quickest in Q2, but McLaren, Red Bull and possibly even Maldonado may have the goods to beat them in Q3 - it's all down to the driver! Alonso is first out...and it's nowhere near the fastest time we've seen today, 1:14.480! Next is Massa, who goes slower also with 1:14.682 - is the track slowing up here? Vettel is next man out...and he goes slower again! 1:14.711! Maldonado can't match his Q2 time, dipping into the 15s. Button takes provisional P2 with a 1:14.681, but that's still a time that would have only been good enough for 8th in Q2! Hamilton takes provisional pole with a 1:14.446! Wow, I don't think any of us were expecting that! Will we see a Mercedes on the front row tomorrow? Rosberg's time is good too, with a 1:14.572! Next up is Webber...will he get anywhere near the Q1 time he set? Not quite, 1:14.513 for provisional P3. Kobayashi is disappointing with a 1:14.893, and Raikkonen also won't be happy with his 1:14.736. Lewis Hamilton has nabbed pole position at the Canadian Grand Prix!

1.  Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)        1:14.446
2.  Fernando Alonso (Ferrari)        1:14.480 (+0.034)

I'm withdrawing from the series, Mercedes is available now. The reason is the same for which I have withdrawn from some canon series. My PMMF involvement has just become too much, and I can't follow all the series I've entered well enough.

Understood and thanks for letting me know - just as Merc were starting to get some traction!

Onxy Wrecked, Mercedes is yours if you want it - I'll give 48 hours and then offer to tristan1117.

EDIT: Just noticed Onxy is out of town, so the offer is now open to tristan for 48 hours.

Post by AustralianStig »

First things first - tristan1117 has agreed via email to take over the running of Mercedes - so that spot is now filled.

Hamilton so nearly wins, but Alonso was simply the best
Fernando Alonso today thoroughly deserved his Canadian GP win, taking the lead from the first lap and never really being challenged for pace on track. However, Mercedes decided to roll the dice with Hamilton, putting him on a two-stop strategy with most of the field opting for 3. That gave Hamilton a 10 second lead on lap 57, but with worn tyres that he had to nurse the rest of the race on. Alonso put in a storming finish to chase down Hamilton, and take the lead on the final lap to record a memorable victory for Ferrari that also rocketed him back to the lead in the championship, despite being on the same number of points as Glock. Rosberg had a solid drive to finish 3rd, Bottas also made a 2-stop strategy work well to finish 4th and Webber rounded out the top 5.

1st: Alonso - Despite the closeness of the finish, Fernando look assured and in control at all times. Brilliant result.

2nd: Hamilton - Very nearly pulled off an incredible victory, nursing very old tyres to the end and making Alonso work hard for his win. Despite this will be glad to record his first podium for Mercedes.

3rd: Rosberg - A very solid result, challenged his teammate from time to time for 2nd although when he was put on a safer three-stop strategy he never had a chance to take 2nd.

4th: Bottas - Somehow kept Webber behind him in the dying laps despite having tyres that were about to pop - brilliant drive.

5th: Webber - Another strong finish, but not awe-inspiring.

6th: Grosjean - Great drive from 11th on the grid, wasn't afraid to challenge his teammate and other fast drivers when needed.

7th: Button - Again, another decent yet dull finish for McLaren.

8th: Maldonado - Recovered well after he nearly beached his car, decent finish but he'll be disappointed to have not reached the lofty heights of his teammate.

9th: di Resta - The Scot will be glad to have just finished after so many retirements, and a top 10 is nothing to be sneezed at.

10th: Vettel - Oh dear...where was Red Bull's pace today? At one stage was struggling to pass a Caterham...enough said.

11th: Kobayashi - Penalised for running up the rear of Hulkenberg and ending his race, capped off a miserable day for Red Bull.

12th: Glock - Sauber's pace just wasn't around today, but Glock didn't help by tagging a wall and losing his front wing early. Somehow he still managed some points, remaining the only driver to score points in every race so far this year.

13th: Ricciardo - Showed flashes of pace from time to time but never really had the car to get into the top 10 today. Seemed to go through tyres quicker than anyone else.

14th: Kovalainen - Looked after his tyres brilliantly to be the only driver to make a two-stop strategy work without risk, great result for Caterham despite the Marussias appearing faster on paper.

15th: Raikkonen - Was on track for around 6th but broke his front wing late in the race.

16th: Bird - Drove well and was unlucky to not pick up points

17th: Pic - Will be disappointed to finish so far behind his teammate and not challenge for points.

18th: Frijns - A solid first drive, while he never looked like finishing anywhere other than last didn't disgrace himself at all.

19th: Hulkenberg - Despite the Saubers seeming to not have much pace was looking good to somehow record a top 10, until he was run into by Kobayashi and put out of the race. Managed to complete the required 90% to be classified, but no points again for Hulkenberg.

Ret: Magnussen - Strong contender for ROTR, got a drive through penalty for ignoring blue flags then spun into the gravel.

Ret: Vergne - Was actually looking very strong and ran ahead of Ricciardo all race, but undid all that good work when he also spun off.

Ret: Bianchi - Made a decent start but had issues with his throttle that ended his race early.

Ret: Sutil - Picked up some chassis damage early that limited him to the pace of the Scorpions - Force India ended up retiring him to save the engine.

Ret: Massa - Oh dear, had similar pace to Alonso and could have challenged for a podium if he hadn't made a silly error and beached his Ferrari.

Re: NewF1 2013 Season - British Qualifying Results

Post by AustralianStig »

Here we are in Silverstone, where it's freezing cold and teams expect fairly slow times. Luckily rain doesn't seem to be on the cards, and this promises to be a thrilling session. Just a reminder of the championship situation, Alonso has retaken the lead although is on the same points as Timo Glock, with Kobayashi and Webber in 3rd and 4th for Red Bull and McLaren. Robin Frijns makes a return for Scorpion, with Perez still suspended, although he will be available for the next round in Germany.

Q1:
Our experts expect a low 1:35 to be a good lap time, such is the difficulty in keeping warmth in the tyres. Alonso is first out and his time is 1:35.798. Next is Glock...wow he's a second slower with 1:36.846! Kobayashi sends a warning shot with a time of 1:34.986. Webber makes a mistake on his lap and can only manage 1:36.083! Vettel manages to go even faster than Kobayashi, with 1:34.811 and Red Bull seem to be the team to beat here! Lotus were next quickest but are barely in touching distance. The Force Indias appear quick, with Williams and Sauber down on pace, with Vergne's Toro Rosso managing a better time than Glock! Ricciardo is knocked out in Q1 once more, and incredibly Magnussen's Scorpion qualifies as high as 20th, with Frijns managing to beat Bird's Marussia! Surprises aplenty here, but unless Red Bull make a mistake they seem very likely to lock out the front row.

Code: Select all

1.  Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull)      1:34.811
2.  Kamui Kobayashi (Red Bull)       1:34.986 (+0.175)

4.  Romain Grosjean (Lotus)          1:35.523 (+0.711)
5.  Jenson Button (McLaren)          1:35.549 (+0.738)
6.  Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)        1:35.756 (+0.945)
7.  Paul di Resta (Force India)      1:35.781 (+0.970)

24. Sam Bird (Marussia)              1:40.772 (+5.961)

107% time: 1:41.448

Q2:
Vettel is first out and once more goes sub 1:35, with a 1:34.915, with Kobayashi then doing a similar time. The Lotuses are out next and are once again about half a second slower than the Bulls. Webber pulled out a much better time in Q2, but Bottas made an error and will miss out on Q3. Surprisingly both Mercedes missed out, with Massa also failing to make the cut. Sauber also looked down on pace again, but both Force Indias made Q3!

17. Jean-Eric Vergne (Toro Rosso)    1:36.922 (+2.007)

Q3:
So it seems a foregone conclusion that the Red Bulls will be up front, but who will take pole and will it be a Lotus or a McLaren in 3rd? First man out it's Vettel, and he does a 1:34.911! Kobayashi is next out, oh and he's given it everything but still falls just shy with 1:34.924! Grosjean is up next, and done his best time to date with 1:35.387 but not good enough to trouble the Bulls. Webber is next out, can he produce some magic? No only a 1:35.487...Raikkonen is next, and goes P4 with a 1:35.436. Another strong lap from Sutil, but still only a 1:35.513, so that's provisional 6th. Button is disappointing with only 1:35.767, Maldonado does a 1:35.676. Alonso seems to give it everything he's got yet can only extract a 1:35.623 from his Ferrari and di Resta is slowest with 1:35.860. Vettel is on pole for the 2013 British Grand Prix!

Kobayashi too good as Vettel chokes
Kamui Kobayashi led every lap today on route to a dominant win at Silverstone, but eyes were on the defending World Champion who had a horror day including a spin on the last lap and another towards the end as he failed to reach the top 10 in a stunningly quick Red Bull. Lotus barely put a foot wrong, despite allowing their drivers to race hard on track to complete the podium, and have been promoted to 6th place in the Constructors' Championship, which Red Bull now lead (by virtue of having more 4th place finishes!) following Glock's 7th place and Hulkenberg's third retirement in succession. The race was interrupted briefly for a safety car period, caused by a racing incident that put Hulkenberg out of the race and dropped Rosberg towards the rear of the grid. Kamui Kobayashi now leads the Drivers' Championship by two points, ahead of Glock, Alonso and Webber.

1st: Kobayashi - After benefiting from his teammate's spin on the last lap never looked like losing - would have won by a country mile if not for the safety car.

2nd: Grosjean - Had one of the best drives of his career; while the Lotus wasn't quick enough to challenge Kobayashi he survived a race-long battle with Kimi and came out on top.

3rd: Raikkonen - Solid drive, but will feel he was outshone by Romain today.

4th: di Resta - Force India had a brilliant tyre strategy and Paul made some big passes stick, brilliant finish.

5th: Webber - Good result for the Australian veteran, but if he wants to challenge for the championship will need to find the podium again and soon.

6th: Button - Had a strong drive, was resurgent late in the race to take positions and could have finished in the top 5 if he had a couple more laps.

7th: Glock - Somehow always finds a way to finish in the points, and that is why he's been at the pointy end of the championship all year.

8th: Sutil - Was one of the few to not pit during the safety car period and paid the price, losing several spots. Will be encouraged at the pace the Force India showed.

9th: Massa - Decent drive, was fairly anonymous but will be glad to get some points on the board.

10th: Ricciardo - Drove a strong recovery considering he picked up a puncture in an incident with Hamilton, that resulted in a stop/go penalty for Lewis.

11th: Vettel - Oh dear. Two spins in a car that should have won the race meant he didn't even make the top 10. Probably would have cracked the top 5 if he hadn't spun again late in the race.

12th: Maldonado - Struggled with a KERS issue for most of the race, but managed to beat his teammate, probably the best result he could have managed in the machinery he was given.

13th: Bottas - Seemed to be running strongly, but was downright slow at the end and lost several positions.

14th: Hamilton - Strong contender for ROTR. Had a dreadful start losing positions, then clashed with Ricciardo and earned a stop/go penalty. Would have finished a lap down if not for the safety car, very disappointing weekend for him.

15th: Kovalainen - Brilliant drive, gave Hamilton a run for his money towards the end.

16th: Pic - Had an anonymous race, but got the job done finishing ahead of the Marussias and Scorpions.

17th: Frijns - Drove a race that will have him knocking on the door of Scorpion's head office asking for some more races - drove a mature, solid race and more than showed the field that he's ready for a full-time drive.

18th: Rosberg - What happened to Mercedes? While he lost track position following a racing incident clash with Hulkenberg that brought out the safety car, he just never really had the pace that he needed.

19th: Bird - Drove a decent race, but Marussia will need to take a good long look at themselves following that performance after being consistently outpaced by both Caterham and Scorpion.

20th: Bianchi - Not a good day, had a stop/go penalty for ignoring blue flags and was anonymous for the rest of the race.

21st: Magnussen - Also got a stop/go penalty for ignoring blue flags - not what you want to do when the reserve driver is beating a Mercedes and two Marussias.

Ret: Hulkenberg - After finishing the first 5 races in the points has retired three times in a row - needs to start qualifying higher if he wants to get back in contention for the championship. Today he was involved in a racing incident with Rosberg that destroyed his vehicle and brought out the safety car.

Ret: Alonso - A spin saw another retirement for the Spaniard, also his third for the year. Somehow is still only 11 points off the championship lead, and if he can consistently finish will still be up there at the end of the season.

Ret: Vergne - Has only finished three races this year...oh dear. His spin today did him no favours when other talent was on show.

Reject of the Race: Sebastian Vettel - How does Seb keep getting it so wrong? Judging by Red Bull's pace and starting from pole should have won, but spun twice and was lucky to get in the points. Honourable mention to Mercedes who just had no pace all weekend and both drivers made errors.

Time for the 2013 British Grand Prix! Will the Red Bulls dominate today as they did in qualifying, or will perhaps Lotus get up and convert their second row lockout into a win? Can Robin Frijns score his first point for Scorpion, in what he knows may be his last drive for the team? Let's find out! Once again we have a dry race forecast - it's now been quite a while since we've had a rain-affected weekend.

Start: Vettel makes a near faultless start, streaking ahead of the entire field! Kobayashi has a slowish start and Grosjean gets stuck behind him, with Raikkonen also being forced to file in behind despite his brilliant start off the line! Oh and Webber is forced to brake hard to avoid the concertina effect on the straight, that could have been disastrous but luckily Sutil didn't get the best getaway so wasn't nearby at the time. Di Resta gets a strong start and passes Button, who gets out of shape into the first corner and Massa has to lockup to avoid impact! Hulkenberg adds to Hamilton's woes of a poor starting position by passing him to take 14th! Pic immediately passes Magnussen to take 20th place, so that's now both the Caterhams ahead of the Scorpions and Marussias. Bird overtakes Frijns to demote the Dutchman to last place!

1: Vettel has spun! Oh and he's undone his brilliant start by looping his Red Bull on cold tyres and he drops down, down, down the order! Raikkonen passes Grosjean to take what is now 2nd place! Di Resta takes his second overtake of the race to pass Maldonado, and then incredibly follows it up with an audacious move on Alonso! Rosberg now passes Massa! Bottas now makes a move on Hamilton...and then Vergne also overtakes Lewis! Wow he's had a dreadful first lap! Oh and Magnussen takes the spot back from Pic! He's got a half-competitive car today for once and he's determined to get the most out of it! Frijns also steals the place back from Bird...and then also passes the Marussia of Bianch! Brilliant start from Scorpion to have both cars ahead of both Marussias and a Caterham!

2: So Kobayashi led the first lap of the race with Vettel stuck way down in 19th - his run of bad luck continues but if his car is anywhere near as quick as it was in qualifying he may still be able to produce a good result. Oh and Kobayashi has had a bit of a slide on cold tyres now - I wonder if the Red Bull is struggling in these cold conditions? Alonso is fighting di Resta for 6th place back, but can't get by this time. Button overtakes Maldonado to take 8th! Vergne spins and stalls! Oh he's already out of the race after just one lap, and what a horror run JEV has been having lately! Vettel begins his comeback by overtaking Kovalainen. Rosberg sets the fastest lap down in 10th with a 1:43.788. So the order is Kobayashi, Raikkonen, Grosjean, Webber, Sutil, di Resta, Alonso, Button, Maldonado, Rosberg in 10th, Massa, Glock, Hulkenberg, Bottas, Hamilton in 15th, Ricciardo, Vettel, Kovalainen, Magnussen, Pic in 20th, Frijns, Bianchi and Bird.

3: Kobayashi hasn't pulled much of a gap on Raikkonen although he is lapping a little quicker, he's now 0.43 ahead. One man already with a train of cars behind him is Paul di Resta, but Maldonado has made that work in his favour passing Button. Things are going from bad to worse for Hamilton! He's just run wide and into the grass, but has managed to keep going albeit even further down the order. Vettel is still making his way through the field, passing Ricciardo. Pic retakes 19th place from Magnussen, and it seems those two will be fighting all race! Kobayashi just posted the fastest lap so far with a 1:43.299.

4: Oh and Kobayashi really puts his foot down with a 1:42.713, that makes the gap to 2nd place as much as 2 seconds already! Massa overtakes Rosberg to take 10th place, good move from the Brazilian! Vettel overtakes Bottas and is now up to 14th place. Kobayashi is really sending some warning signs, his laptime was over half a second quicker than the next fastest that lap.

5: Massa is having a great run, now overtaking Button also for 9th! Oh and Vettel has suffered a setback with Bottas overtaking him! He was trying to get by Hulkenberg but didn't keep an eye on his mirrors and Valtteri made the move stick! Hamilton passes Pic for 18th...oh and Frijns is continuing his brilliant start to this race with a move on Magnussen to take 20th! Brilliant stuff from the rookie!

6: The gap between Kobayashi and Raikkonen is now 2.6 seconds. Vettel repasses Bottas and can now concentrate on 13th placed Hulkenberg. Vettel's now nearly 14 seconds off the lead! Oh and Magnussen won't be happy, he's just been passed by Bianchi after being held up by Frijns.

7: The gap for the lead is now as much as 3.8 seconds, and it's beginning to look unlikely that the Lotuses will be able to match the pace required today. Massa now passes Maldonado for 8th, and he's now right behind hsi teammate. Glock is starting to look quite strong - he's just passed Rosberg for 11th and looks likely to break into the top 10 soon. The other Sauber of Hulkenberg is really giving Vettel a hard time - Seb's been stuck behind him for a few laps now. Hamilton now passes Kovalainen to take 17th, and Magnussen has now got his revenge on Bianchi by passing him for 21st...make that 20th! He's also passed his teammate Frijns in a brilliant lap for the Dane.

8: Kobayashi now shaves half a second off the fastest lap with a 1:42.298 as the gap between 1st and 2nd extends to 5.1 seconds. Vettel is now finally past Hulkenberg to take 13th, and Rosberg is the next man in his sights! To make matters worse for Hulkenberg, he's also been passed by Bottas.

9: To make things even easier for Kobayashi now, the two Lotuses are battling for 2nd place, with the gap to 2nd now 7.6 seconds.

10: Grosjean really looks like he's quicker than Raikkonen, but the Finn is fighting tooth and nail to keep second place despite Kobayashi now being out of view ahead of him. So with our first round of pit stops not far away the order is Kobayashi, Raikkonen, Grosjean, Webber, Sutil, di Resta, Alonso, Massa, Maldonado, Button in 10th, Glock, Rosberg, Vettel, Bottas, Hulkenberg in 15th, Ricciardo, Hamilton, Kovalainen, Pic, Magnussen in 20th, Frijns, Bianchi and Bird.

11: Kobayashi now has a lead of 10 seconds, and Grosjean hasn't done himself any favours in trying to get by Raikkonen - he overdrove that corner horribly and lost a second or two. Bianchi has just been demoted to last place after being overtaken by teammate Bird. Massa, Ricciardo, and the two Sconpions seem to be complaining on the radio about their tyres already, but don't forget with the short pitlane here it won't be as much of a penalty having to stop more often.

12: Massa makes a mistake and runs wide! Maldonado takes the opportunity and breezes past for 8th place! Oh and now Massa runs wide again, seemingly spooked by Button who also manages to get by albeit suffering a lock-up on the way through! Terrible lap from Massa...and now it's made even worse as Glock takes 10th place from him! Vettel now passes Rosberg to take 12th, and Bottas follows him through! Valtteri is doing a great job of holding onto the tail of Vettel and passing whenever the German is, great stuff! Oh and does Rosberg have some kind of problem? He's just been passed by Hulkenberg as well! We'll have to keep an eye on that  Merc.

13: We are still waiting on our first driver to pit with everyone seemingly aiming for a long early run or hoping for a safety car. Kobayashi now has an ever-growing lead of 11.4 seconds, give it 5 laps and he'll have a pit stop gap on everyone!

14: Button passes Maldonado to take 8th! What a great race this is in the mid-field! We have two drivers pitting, but neither of them are drivers we expected to see in early! Vettel and Rosberg pit! With both of them out of position they must be hoping to adopt aggressive strategies that sees them on quick tyres as much as possible. They rejoin in 16th and 18th but expect a dash for the pits following those moves.

15: Glock passes Maldonado! Don't count Timo out yet, he's really starting to make his name in the top 10! Oh and now they're diving for the pits! Webber, Sutil, Alonso, Button, Hamilton, Pic and Frijns all decide now's the time to pit.

16: Vettel is currently the fastest man out there, despite getting a little caught behind Button that lap. Raikkonen pits from 2nd! Hulkenberg, Ricciardo and Magnussen join him in the pitlane.

17: Rosberg passes Kovalainen to take 15th place. Five more drivers pitting, with Grosjean, Glock, Maldonado, Massa and Bird all stopping for fresh rubber. Oh and Grosjean has managed to emerge ahead of Raikkonen! His stop was just 2.5 seconds and that's given him what will effectively be 2nd! Surprisingly Button sets the fastest lap with a 1:42.278.

18: Oh and there's been an accident between Ricciardo and Hamilton! The cars just ran too close together, touched and both picked up punctures as a result! That's terrible, with both drivers having just pitted recently for new tyres...luckily it's happened near the pit entry and both drivers seem to have gotten away with no floor damage, but that's ruined their races. Kobayashi has pitted! Our race leader is into the pits, and will retain the lead with di Resta too far behind to inherit the lead. Bottas and Bianchi also pit. So the gap between Kobayashi and 3rd-placed Grosjean is 14.3 seconds, and Kamui really is commanding this race.

19: Ricciardo has a moment and loses a couple more seconds...his race is just imploding. Raikkonen now sets the fastest lap with a 1:42.089 as he tries to chase down his teammate. Kovalainen now pits from 16th, dropping two places on his return to the track. So the order with just di Resta to pit is Kobayashi, di Resta, Grosjean, Raikkonen, Webber, Sutil, Alonso, Button, Vettel, Glock in 10th, Maldonado, Massa, Hulkenberg, Rosberg, Bottas in 15th, Pic, Hamilton, Kovalainen, Ricciardo, Magnussen in 20th, Frijns, Bird and Bianchi.

20: Stop-go penalty for Hamilton! He's been penalised for that collision with Ricciardo, and must serve a 10 second stop and go penalty! Of course, no drive-throughs at Silverstone with the short pitlane, but that's going to absolutely destroy his race, which was already in tatters! Di Resta finally pits, returning to the track in 9th, and the running order has now sorted itself out, with Kobayashi 15.4 seconds ahead of Grosjean. Kobayashi sets the fastest lap with a 1:41.836.

21: So how far can Vettel get through the field? After the first round of stops he's in 8th place and is just 10 seconds behind second-placed man Grosjean. And now Vettel passes Button to take 7th and while doing so sets the fastest lap with a 1:41.464! Maldonado is reporting a KERS issue, and seems to be losing about half a second a lap as a result. Ricciardo overtakes Kovalainen for 18th and Hamilton serves his stop-go penalty, dropping from 17th to 19th.

22: Massa and Hulkenberg are stuck behind Maldonado, who is quite quick but is having that KERS issue. Oh and Hulkenberg now passes Massa to take 12th, and then streaks past Maldonado for 11th! Great move!

23: Webber has a nasty lock-up - that would've taken chunks out of his tyres. Massa now passes Maldonado to take 12th. Kobayashi's lead is now 17.5 seconds.

24: Kobayashi sets a new fastest lap of 1:41.418. He's just lapped Bianchi and looks set to also lap Bird and the Scorpions soon. Bottas now passes Rosberg to take 14th, and Ricciardo steams past Pic for 16th.

25: Oh and Kobayashi's got held up badly there by Bird, but it was in an awkward part of the track and he should get away with it. Alonso's flying at the moment in 6th, but is really having a tough time getting by Sutil. Oh what's this? Alonso's out! Vettel was trying to pass him and he defended too hard and dipped his tyre in the grass, spinning out! What a terrible blow for Ferrari just as he'd taken the championship lead again! Bottas almost lost it going through the dust kicked up by Alonso, which allowed Rosberg to sneak through.

26: So that now puts Vettel up to 6th place! Oh and now Grosjean runs wide, putting him right in the clutches of Raikkonen. That now makes the lead 21 seconds, that's extraordinary. So the order now, Kobayashi, Grosjean, Raikkonen, Webber, Sutil, Vettel, Button, di Resta, Glock, Hulkenberg in 10th, Massa, Maldonado, Rosberg, Bottas, Ricciardo in 15th, Pic, Kovalainen, Hamilton, Magnussen, Frijns in 20th, Bird and Bianchi.

27: Vettel is now harassing Sutil and he looks like he'll soon be into the top 5. Di Resta makes a solid move on Button - don't forget he pitted later than everyone else so his tyres are at their prime while others are fading. Kovalainen's strategy of pitting late is being hampered by his own teammate, who is seriously holding him up down in the fight for 16th.

28: Kobayashi posts another new fastest lap with 1:41.321. Kovalainen now passes Charles Pic to take 16th place. Oh and we have someone pitting for a second scheduled stop! It's Button for McLaren, pitting from 8th place and rejoining in 14th.

29: A few drivers react to Button pitting, with Sutil, Vettel and Frijns all diving for pitroad. Sutil manages to gain a second on Vettel in the pitlane, great job from Force India, and as a result puts Maldonado between the two when they emerge.

30: Another fastest lap from Kobayashi (1:41.221) as his lead extends to 24 seconds. And Vettel puts his new tyres to work straight away, passing Maldonado and closing right in on Sutil once again! Hamilton now passes Pic for 17th as he continues his attempt to salvage something from this race. Two more drivers pit this lap, with Webber and Rosberg deciding the time is right for their second scheduled stop.

31: Vettel is really flying now, passing Sutil and challenging Webber for 8th! Oh and Bianchi's blatantly held up Grosjean there, I won't be at all surprised if that results in a penalty...yes and almost immediately the stewards announce a stop-go penalty for Bianchi! Three more drivers pitting: Massa, Pic and Magnussen.

32: Vettel is pushing Webber for 8th but is getting no favours from his former teammate. Bottas has made a great move on his teammate to take 10th place, great work from the young Finn! Ricciardo and Bird are the next drivers to pit, with Ricciardo keeping 15th place and Bird dropping to last.

33: And Webber is still keeping Vettel behind him, there's such a big difference in pace between the McLaren and the Red Bull, despite them having similar tyre wear. Maldonado is really going backwards on those old tyres; he's just been passed by Button now. Kobayashi pits from the lead! He'll retain it but that's quite early and he may need to pit again before the end of the race. Glock also pits from 5th and Bianchi takes his stop-go penalty for ignoring blue flags.

34: Hulkenberg is on old tyres and now has a train of Webber, Vettel, Sutil, Bottas and Button in close company. Maldonado pits, and Bianchi takes his second trip through pitlane in two laps, this time for a scheduled stop.

35: Webber, Vettel and Sutil all put their tyre advantage to good use and pass Hulkenberg. And Button now not only passes Bottas but Hulkenberg also, and Nico decides to pit for fresh rubber. Joining him in the pits are Raikkonen and Hamilton. Here's a surprise - Felipe Massa has just set the fastest lap down in 11th with a 1:41.179! So the order is Kobayashi, Grosjean, di Resta, Raikkonen, Webber, Vettel, Sutil, Button, Bottas, Glock in 10th, Massa, Hulkenberg, Rosberg, Maldonado, Ricciardo in 15th, Kovalainen, Hamilton, Pic, Frijns, Magnussen in 20th, Bird and Bianchi. We expect Grosjean to pit soon, which should drop him to 3rd. Bottas will pit shortly, dropping him to around 12th, and Kovalainen should also pit soon but won't drop any places unless he has a disastrous stop. Di Resta could also pit soon but is unlikely to as it will drop him in the middle of the Webber/Vettel/Sutil/Button group.

36: And now in the prime of his new tyres Kobayashi sets the new fastest lap of 1:40.904! Grosjean, Bottas and Kovalainen all pit...and Grosjean rejoins behind Raikkonen! Oh and that's an incredible turn of events for Lotus! I'm sure that fight is going to be on for young and old now!

37: Kobayashi has now lapped everyone down to Lewis Hamilton in 16th, and sets another new fastest lap of 1:40.396. His lead over Raikkonen is 39 seconds, as di Resta pits from second, rejoining in 8th place. Oh and drawback for Vettel, he's just been overtaken by Sutil as he was trying to get by Webber. So the order is now Kobayashi, Raikkonen, Grosjean, Webber, Sutil, Vettel, Button, di Resta, Glock, Massa in 10th, Bottas, Hulkenberg, Rosberg, Maldonado Ricciardo in 15th, Hamilton, Kovalainen, Pic, Frijns, Magnussen in 20th, Bird and Bianchi. We expect all drivers to get to the end without needing to pit again except Webber, Sutil, Vettel, Button, Massa, Rosberg, Ricciardo, Frijns and Magnussen.

38: Kobayashi still pumping out quick laps, now with another fastest lap of 1:40.231. Oh and now Magnussen has been holding up Sutil! He's been practically weaving down the straight, what on earth was he doing that for? That's certainly going to be a stop-go penalty, and yes that's been confirmed by the stewards. Oh and Vettel now passes Sutil! That's going to really annoy Adrian there, after being held up by a backmarker he's lost a place as a result. Di Resta passes Button! So that's now both Force Indias in the top 7, great job from them today. Oh and there's been an accident! Nico Rosberg has somehow broken Hulkenberg's rear wing and punctured his own left-front tyre! Hulkenberg goes shooting off into the gravel and is out of the race! The safety car is called! Rosberg limps back to the pits but it looks like he's picked up some floor damage there...The scorpions decide to take the opportunity to pit now - as they are hardest on their tyres that's not altogether surprising.

39-SC: No one else has dived for the pits so it seems the rest of the drivers are confident they'll make it to the end on these tyres. Kobayashi probably would have liked to have pitted so he could defend his lead on fresh tyres but was already past pit-road when the incident occured. The lapped cars of Hamilton, Kovalainen, Pic, Bird, Frijns, Magnussen and Bianchi are now allowed to pass and will return to the lead lap.

40-SC: A bit of house-keeping - Magnussen must take his stop/go penalty during green flag conditions, and the Rosberg/Hulkenberg clash has been deemed a racing incident. All the cars that have unlapped themselves must rejoin the rear of the trail of cars before the safety car will return to pitlane.

41-SC: So the order is Kobayashi, Raikkonen, Grosjean, Webber, Sutil, di Resta, Glock, Massa, Vettel, Button in 10th, Bottas, Maldonado, Rosberg, Ricciardo, Hamilton in 15th, Kovalainen, Pic, Bird, Frijns, Magnussen and Bianchi.

42-SC: Of the top 3 Grosjean's tyres are the newest, followed by Raikkonen, followed by Kobayashi - this should be a thrilling finish!

43-SC: All cars are back in queue, the safety car lights are out and we'll be back to racing shortly!

44: Green flag and we're racing again! Kobayashi gets a good start and disappears into the distance, helped by Grosjean attacking Raikkonen for 2nd place! Sutil gets a poor start and di Resta immediately overtakes, putting the tyre wear difference to good use. Oh and Glock also overtakes Sutil - he may rue not pitting during the safety car period...in the middle of a long queue of cars Maldonado somehow finds a way past teammate Bottas for 11th! Oh and Rosberg now runs wide and into the gravel, but he's managed to drive it out returning to the rear of the pack. Bianchi now passes Magnussen to take 19th, but it will be all for naught anyway as Kevin drives down pitroad to serve his stop/go penalty...oh but then Bianchi passes Frijns also! Great lap from Jules! Kobayashi sets a new fastest lap as he leads by 1.3 seconds with a 1:40.163.

45: Kobayashi knows he needs to put as much space between him and the Lotuses as he can, and he's just posted a 1:39.605! Drivers are fighting position all throughout the field, but the only one to make a move this lap is Hamilton, passing Ricciardo for 13th! Oh but now Frijns has passed Bianchi for 18th! While Robin is unlikely to score points today he's doing a sterling job for Scorpion!

46: Both Lotuses venture into the 1:39s now as they attempt to reel in Kobayashi, but his lead of 2.2 seconds may be a tough ask this late in the race. Vettel's attempts to get into a better position are being hampered horribly by Massa, who is doing a great job keeping him at bay despite being on worn tyres and going quite slowly. Oh and Ricciardo now passes Hamilton! That battle is still going tooth and nail! Rosberg is now trying to salvage something from his race but can't get by Bianchi's Marussia for 19th.

47: Kobayashi is still finding something and is pulling away from the Lotuses once more, his lead now 2.8 seconds. Rosberg finally finds a way to get past Bianchi but does it the hard way, having an excursion off track beforehand.

48: Grosjean takes second place! He's muscled his way through and can now start in his attempt to chase down Kobayashi, but with a head start of 2.6 seconds Kamui is at short odds to win this. Vettel is still behind Massa, with quite a trail of cars behind him including Button, Maldonado, Bottas, Ricciardo, Hamilton and Kovalainen. Oh but Bottas is now through on Maldonado! Oh and Frijns is doing everything he can to get close to a points finish, passing Bird for 17th!

49: Di Resta passes Webber! He's managed to put his Force India into 4th place thanks to his tyres! Oh and Vettel is now making moves, passing Massa. He now tries to overtake Sutil, oh and Sutil's locked up going into the corner! Vettel is unsighted due to the tyre smoke and trails a wheel in the grass, he spins! Oh and all that hard work and Seb's going to lose nearly every place he made up after his second spin this race... Button now overtakes Massa, benefiting from the chaos. Oh and while rejoining Vettel's got right in the way of Hamilton, and Kovalainen now shoots past him to take 14th! Rosberg continues his attempt to get into the points by passing Bird for 18th, but it seems too little too late.

50: Button's really looking good in the final stages of this race, he's just passed Sutil for 7th and may even catch Glock in 6th before the end. Oh and the Williams battle is far from over, Maldonado has just managed to pass Bottas for 10th despite his KERS issue! Oh and Bottas loses another place, this time to Ricciardo who has put his Toro Rosso into 11th!

51: Kobayashi's gap now seems unassailable at 5.2 seconds - he's simply monstered this race. Webber is now doing everything he can to hold onto the top 5 spot and keep Glock at bay, which is actually helping his teammate Button who is in striking distance. Vettel now passes Bottas for 12th, but Ricciardo defends well and he can get no further this lap. Hamilton passes Kovalainen and gets 14th place back from him. Oh and Frijns is unable to keep Rosberg behind him, and loses 17th place to him. That's a shame, the Dutchman has driven brilliantly today and deserves better than 18th.

52: And Kobayashi wins the 2013 British Grand Prix! Oh and Raikkonen takes the fight to Grosjean, but the Frenchman defends and claims 2nd place with Kimi right behind! Di Resta takes a brilliant 4th...Button overtakes Glock to take 6th, and he's going to give Webber a run to the line for 5th! Oh and Webber just holds him off! Sutil is 8th, Ricciardo passes Maldonado to take 10th, and gives Massa a run to the line but the Brazilian inches out the Australian for 9th! Vettel flies past Pastor also to take a disappointing 11th. Maldonado 12th, Bottas 13th, Hamilton nowhere in 14th, Kovalainen picks up another valuable point for Caterham in 15th, Pic 16th...Rosberg makes an error! He runs wide and Frijns passes him to take 17th! What a drive from the Dutchman in only his second GP! Bird comes home in 19th, Bianchi 20th, and Magnussen was totally outclassed by his teammate to take 21st and is the last classified runner. Just three retirements, Vergne spun off on the second lap, Alonso spun off after 24 laps and Hulkenberg retired after 37 laps following his clash with Rosberg that was deemed a racing incident by stewards.

Note for Scorpion: Sergio Perez is now available to race in Germany, and by default will return to the seat unless I hear otherwise.

Upgrades

The next round of upgrades are now available - you have one week to submit the upgrade you would like to attempt, remembering you can only choose one area to upgrade plus pit stops (optional).

Upgrade rules in case anyone has forgotten:

Code: Select all

Four times in the year (before Australia, Spain, Germany and Singapore) each team will have the opportunity to install upgrades on their vehicles. Only one parameter may be upgraded each time, aside from pit stops which you can do every time. I'm going to keep this pretty simple here, so the following upgrades are possible:

    Reliability
    Race Pace
    Qualifying Pace
    Tyre Life
    Pit stops (free)

When you have decided on which upgrade you would prefer, you can then choose how radical or conservative you would like it to be:

Very conservative - very high chance of success, very small gains
Conservative - high chance of success, small gains
Standard - average chance of success, average gains
Radical - low chance of success, high gains
Very radical - very low chance of success, very high gains

Success or failure will be decided by RNG. Note that a bad failure may actually have the opposite effect to what you were hoping for, so choose carefully. Teams will also be advised of the degree of success or failure.

For example, Red Bull may wish to attempt to improve their tyre life. They don't feel they should be taking risks early in the season, so are opting for a conservative approach. As all teams can attempt to improve pit stops for free, they would also like to do this, and are going to take a radical approach to try and get ahead of the other teams on pit road.

Red Bull would like to get a conservative tyrelife upgrade and a standart pit stop one.

Scorpion will demote Perez to a test role if he isn't pissed off about it in exchange for Frijns getting the seat.

***EDITTED! DO NOT POST PREVIOUS RESULTS!!***
As for upgrades, we will invest in a Standard Tire Life upgrade and a Standard Pitstop upgrade, since we havent addressed that issue since pre-season testing.

Done - Checo is very disappointed but ultimately can understand that he screwed up big time and the consequences are his to bear.

Upgrade Results:
Red Bull are attempting a conservative tyre life and standard pit stop upgrade. They have made slight improvements on both.

Force India are attempting two standard upgrades, qualifying pace and pit stops. Unfortunately they have been unable to make any improvements to qualifying pace but have made great leaps forward with pitstops!

Scorpion are attempting two standard upgrades, tyre life and pit stops. They have made a slight improvement to tyre life and a larger gain on pit stops!

Williams are attempting a standard qualifying pace improvement. Unfortunately they've hit a brick wall and been unable to improve.

McLaren are attempting two standard upgrades, race pace and pit stops. They have made a big improvement on race pace but have been unable to improve on their pit stops.

Marussia are attempting standard race pace and conservative pit stops upgrades. Oh dear, their race pace upgrade has backfired and appears to be slower! However, they have made quite a decent improvement on pit stops.

Sauber are attempting radical race pace and standard pit stops upgrades. While they have made a small improvement on race pace, their pit stops have been unable to improve.

Lotus are attempting radical race pace and standard pit stops upgrades. While they have made a small improvement on race pace, their pit stops have been unable to improve.

Mercedes are attempting two standard upgrades, race pace and pit stops. They have made small improvements on both!

Ferrari are attempting two standard upgrades, race pace and pit stops. They have unfortunately had no improvement on race pace but have made small gains on pit stops.

Toro Rosso are attempting two standard upgrades, race pace and pit stops. Oh no! They've had a terrible day and both upgrades have backfired, meaning race pace and pit stop times will be a little slower.

Caterham are attempting two standard upgrades, race pace and pit stops. The R&D department have come back scratching their heads, and reported they were unfortunately unable to make any improvements.

Preparation for Young Driver's Test:
The YDT is just around the corner and will be held after the next GP. If everyone could try and have their plans finalised before I post the German GP results that'd be fantastic.

Eligibility: Drivers must be under 27 years old on 19 July 2013 AND have less than 10 F1 starts.

Drivers who are already contracted as test drivers will automatically accept offers to drive for their respective teams at the test day. Any other offers will be decided by RNG. Teams can approach drivers contracted to other teams but that team owner has the final say on whether they are available.

I have decided that 50 laps was probably not enough in the pre-season tests, so I'm extending the number of laps available per car to 100. Teams may provide up to two cars on the test day, but can only run one driver per car. Teams may also choose to use their setups from quali/race from the British GP to compare drivers, however track/weather conditions will vary lap times a little also. If anyone needs info on the British GP laptimes for quali/race let me know and I can post them.

Please fill out the following entry form:

Code: Select all

Driver One:
Driver Two:
Reserve Drivers: (in case any decline or choose another team, in preferential order)

And then the following testing plan form:

Code: Select all

Car One
Setup: [Same as quali/same as race/new]
Testing plans: [Race simulation/quali simulation/high fuel runs/low fuel runs/whatever you want - ensure you note how many laps to spend on each program]

Car Two

kevinbotz wrote:I'd like some clarification regarding young drivers programs before posting McLaren's testing arrangements.

What did you need clarified? For simplicity, I hadn't planned to include young driver's programs, but maybe I could have some kind of youth contract system if the majority of people would like that.

Qualifying results:

Here we are in Germany for the 10th round of the season, but first we must decide the grid for the race tomorrow. Kobayashi currenty leads the championship and will be first to take to the legendary Nurburgring. Robin Frijns makes his third appearance of the season for Scorpion, the team confirming that he has replaced Sergio Perez for the rest of the season despite the Mexican being available today following his two race ban. Instead Perez will be watching from the sidelines as he begins his role as official test driver for the team. We are once again expecting a dry session, but the track has been incredibly slow in practice and pole time is expected to be in the region of mid 1:31.

Q1:
Kobayashi opens the day with a 1:31.832 with a decent but not great lap. Glock follows with a 1:32.903, wow, Sauber's qualifying pace is really hurting them. Alonso splits them down the middle with a 1:32.228. Oh and Webber then goes fastest with a 1:31.624! But wait, now Maldonado has somehow put his Williams even quicker with 1:31.555! His time proves to be the fastest, with Williams looking very impressive. Both Toro Rossos make Q2 with Ricciardo looking particularly impressive, but what happened to Mercedes? Once again they have failed to deliver on Saturday but they have never sunk this low, with Rosberg recording the 18th fastest time and being eliminated in Q1. Scorpion have been unable to replicate their success and return to the back of the grid behind Marussia and Caterham, but up the front we already have several contenders for the front row!

Code: Select all

1.  Pastor Maldonado (Williams)      1:31.555
2.  Mark Webber (McLaren)            1:31.624 (+0.069)
3.  Jenson Button (McLaren)          1:31.639 (+0.084)
4.  Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull)      1:31.722 (+0.167)
5.  Kamui Kobayashi (Red Bull)       1:31.832 (+0.277)
6.  Valtteri Bottas (Williams)       1:31.923 (+0.368)

23. Kevin Magnussen (Scorpion)       1:35.660 (+4.105)
24. Robin Frijns (Scorpion)          1:36.268 (+4.713)

107% time: 1:37.964

Q2:
Was Maldonado's laptime in Q1 a fluke? No! He improves fractionally with a 1:31.503! Webber improves also but can't match Pastor's pace, but Button makes a mistake a drops a couple of tenths. Both Force Indias again look strong, and have made Q3 with ease, but Ferrari are struggling and only Alonso squeaks in. The Saubers are also well off the pace, but good job Daniel Ricciardo who qualifies 12th, the highest a Toro Rosso has started this year.

Code: Select all

1.  Pastor Maldonado (Williams)      1:31.503

17. Timo Glock (Sauber)              1:33.164 (+1.662)

Q3:
Who will be on pole? Maldonado is first out and is unable to match his earlier times, going a couple of tenths slower with a 1:31.755! Can Webber capitalise on that? He beats Pastor but only just! 1:31.703! Kobayashi is unable to make the 31s with a 1:32.068, Bottas is also slower with a 1:32.200. Sutil also doesn't have the best time with a 1:32.092. Button has the chance to recover from his poor lap earlier and nab his first pole of the year...but he also has an uninspiring lap with a 1:31.816. Can Vettel spoil the party? No he's underwhelming too with a 1:31.837! Di Resta, Raikkonen and Alonso all are unable to get into the 31s, and therefore it's Mark Webber who will start from pole position in the German Grand Prix, with Pastor Maldonado in 2nd! Wow, they really struggled to put down a decent lap time in that last session, with most drivers posting their slowest time of the day.

Code: Select all

1.  Mark Webber (McLaren)            1:31.703
2.  Pastor Maldonado (Williams)      1:31.755 (+0.052)

Specifically, I had some questions over the present status of Kevin Magnussen and Stoffel Vandoorne in relation to the McLaren organization. Do we have any preferential powers over their services (e.g. calling up Magnussen to drive for McLaren in the YDT irrespective of his Scorpion contract, vetoing Vandoorne's test with Red Bull, etc.), or are all young drivers presumed free agents with no association with any team?

Yeah I'm going to rule that all young drivers are presumed free agents with no associations to any teams, unless they have a testing contract, just because we never really discussed it at the start of the season.

For 2014 I may hold a vote as to whether we should introduce youth contracts, but I'm personally against it as I'd like all teams to have a wide variety of drivers to choose from.

Webber records first win for McLaren as Red Bull falter again
Mark Webber today drove an assured and confident race as he rocketed McLaren to the top of the constructor's championship with a memorable win today at the Nurburgring. The race was one of the all-time best, with plenty of overtakes, drama and heartbreak. Webber led from the start over Maldonado, but due to a lapse in concentration lost the lead just before the first round of stops. However he fought back to retake the lead, and Maldonado's day never got better from there. Button looked strong and set to challenge Webber for the race, but McLaren split the driver strategies and the three-stop didn't pay off for Jenson. Fernando Alonso had a very quiet day, simply going about his business and setting fast laps to somehow end up in 2nd place, putting him back in the lead of the drivers' championship. Raikkonen rounded out the podium places with a solid drive. At one stage the race was looking like it would turn into a Webber/Alonso/Raikkonen/Vettel challenge, but Seb had another horror race, running into the lapped Bianchi on lap 42, then wiping off his own front wing on lap 49. Both incidents resulted in unscheduled stops that dropped the German down to the minor placings. Timo Glock recorded his first retirement of the year when he spun off, and Grosjean had a frightening accident early on caused by a brake failure, that brought out the safety car and also disabled Bottas's car due to running over debris and picking up punctures.

1st: Webber - While he had a couple of lapses in concentration drove consistently and aggressively when needed to take the win.

2nd: Alonso - Just kept picking up positions, stayed out of trouble and used his new-found Sunday pace to pick up his 5th podium of the year.

3rd: Raikkonen - Briefly battled Webber for the lead and had some very quick laptimes but lost too much time behind Massa and didn't defend against Vettel and Alonso.

4th: Vergne - Wow, easily the drive of the day. Made the two-stop work better than anyone else, and somehow managed to beat his teammate despite starting 4 places down on him.

5th: Ricciardo - Brilliant result, but will be disappointed to be beaten by his teammate.

6th: Maldonado - A strong result, but will be disappointed that he didn't have the car to challenge for a podium after starting on the front row.

7th: Button - The best of the three-stoppers, but the strategy just didn't pay off for McLaren.

8th: Massa - Also three-stopped, and briefly threatened the front-runners with his pace after the first round of stops but couldn't keep it up during the latter part of the race.

9th: Sutil - Ran wide early and dropped stacks of positions, but recovered quite well to finish inside the top 10.

10th: Hulkenberg - Started too far down the order to make any impression, but picked up enough points to elevate Sauber ahead of Red Bull again.

11th: Hamilton - Frustrating day for Lewis, did everything right but the car was just too slow.

12th: di Resta - Was on track for a top 10 but the last stop resulted in the car being released without a wheelnut, meaning Force India had to roll it most of the way back down the pitlane and lose about 30 seconds.

13th: Vettel - Has Seb been smashing any mirrors lately? Had a racing incident with the lapped Bianchi, then lost his front-wing. Was supremely fast but must tone down his erratic driving if he's to even finish in the top 10 of the drivers' championship. Hopefully a better second half to the year is looming.

14th: Rosberg - Also struggled with a slow Mercedes, decided to try something different by pitting when the safety car came out at the end of lap 6, but it was too early and Nico couldn't make it work.

15th: Kovalainen - A good, consistent drive sees another point for Caterham and the likelihood of relegation becoming less and less.

16th: Pic - Did his job well, but was pretty lonely as he never kept up with Kovalainen but was much quicker than the Marussias and Scorpions.

17th: Bird - Totally outpaced his teammate until Bianchi crashed out, but the Marussias just weren't in the same league as the Caterhams.

18th: Magnussen - Trailed behind his teammate for much of the race, but put on a late spurt of speed to take the bragging rights.

19th: Frijns - Another solid race, and Robin looked like he would have beaten Bianchi even if Jules hadn't crashed.

Ret: Glock - A rare mistake sees Glock's first non-finish for the year, resulting in dropping to 3rd place with Webber right behind him in the championship.

Ret: Kobayashi - Managed to pick up a puncture from the start by tangling with his teammate, resulting in floor damage that would have only given him minor points even if his gearbox hadn't packed up.

Ret: Bianchi - Was somewhat unlucky to be involved in what was deemed a racing incident with Vettel, which broke his rear wing and finished his race prematurely.

Ret: Bottas - Innocent bystander in the Grosjean incident, ran over some carbon fibre and punctured two tyres to end his race.

Ret: Grosjean - Had a terrifying brake failure that sent him into the wall at speed, but walked away unhurt. Brought out an early safety car as a result.

Well here we are at the Nurburgring, and can Webber replicate his 2009 heroics, winning from pole position, or will he suffer the same fate as 2011, where he was relegated to 3rd place after a poor start? Don't discount Pastor Maldonado - we all know what happened last time he qualified on the front row! Weather is again looking clear, and teams believe the track will be very quick, much unlike yesterday when drivers were struggling for pace. Don't forget teams bring their upgrades to this race for the first time, so lets keep an eye on who is racing out of their usual league.

Start: Lights out and away we go at the Nurburgring, and it's strong starts from all drivers on the first two rows, oh but Kobayashi gets a brilliant start, he's trying to squeeze around the side of Vettel, but Seb forces him onto the grass! Oh and Kamui's lost control and hit the wall with his wheel! Luckily he seems to only have a puncture but he's going to lose a huge amount of time and have floor damage by the time he gets back to pitlane. Horrible start for Red Bull! In the chaos Raikkonen managed to slip by Vettel. Alonso had a good start and used his raw pace of his Ferrari to beat di Resta to turn 1. Hulkenberg seems to be trying to make up for his poor qualifying performance and has overtaken Vergne, and is right on Hamilton's tail! Rosberg also has a decent start and passes Glock for 16th, then Vergne for 15th! Pic gets bogged down horribly, and both Kovalainen and Bird skate past him.

1: Webber leads the first lap by half a second, with Button right on Maldonado's tail as he tries to make it a McLaren 1-2. Alonso is crawling all over Bottas but the young Finn does well to keep the double World Champion at bay. Grosjean seems to have a very quick car, and he's passed di Resta easily to take 9th. Massa passes Ricciardo to take 11th! Hamilton seems to be struggling early in the Mercedes and is passed by Hulkenberg. Glock now passes Vergne who is getting a little swallowed at the moment. Oh and now Glock has also passed Rosberg! He's pegged back the Mercedes to take 15th! Kobayashi circulates slowly on three wheels but makes it back to the pitlane, but he's now 51 seconds down on the leaders and has a lot of work on if he's going to retain the championship lead today.

2: It's very tight at the front now, with the top 5 practically nose to tail. Kimi Raikkonen is currently the fastest man on track with a 1:36.757, he's made a huge statement of intent already up to 4th. Oh and what a lap from di Resta! He's passed Grosjean and Alonso, and then Grosjean passed Alonso too! Seems both Lotutes are quick today. Ricciardo isn't giving up this battle with Massa without a fight, and he has in fact passed the Brazilian to retake 11th! Glock passes Hamilton! Mercedes looking in trouble again today...and that's underlined by Vergne passing Rosberg for 16th.

3: Webber now sets the fastest lap with a 1:36.414, with Maldonado now dropping a little as he defends from Button. Alonso continues his battle with Grosjean by overtaking the Frenchman! So the order is Webber, Maldonado, Button, Raikkonen, Vettel, Sutil, Bottas, di Resta, Alonso, Grosjean in 10th, Ricciardo, Massa, Hulkenberg, Glock, Hamilton in 15th, Vergne, Rosberg, Kovalainen, Bird, Pic in 20th, Bianchi, Magnussen, Frijns and Kobayashi.

4: Webber improves with another fastest lap of 1:36.385 as his gap now extends to over 2.5 seconds. Oh wow, Hamilton was just passed by Vergne almost as if he was standing still! Mercedes really having a tough time. Pic passes Bird to retake 19th place, so both Caterhams ahead of the Marussias now.

5: Maldonado now puts his foot down and puts in a good lap, giving himself some breathing space from Button. Alonso is fighting hard to get higher in the top 10, and he now passes di Resta for 8th.

6: Alonso is still driving well, and has just passed Bottas to take 7th. Next up for him is Sutil. Grosjean is still flying, passing di Resta and also Bottas. Oh problem now for Grosjean! He's had a brake failure and smashed heavily into the wall! That was a frightening accident, but he's managed to walk away. Oh and Bottas has run over the broken carbon fibre and seems to have a puncture as a result! In fact it's such a bad one that he's had to pull over and won't make it to the pitlane, he's out also! Safety car is called! Will anyone take the plunge and pit? That would be very early...only Rosberg pits! Everyone else has decided to stay out but Nico Rosberg has decided to pit and try something different.

7-SC: So Rosberg rejoins second to last but should clear the Scorpions, Marussias and Caterhams quickly. I wonder if this early stop will pay off or whether he will struggle in the latter stage of the race? It emerges that Bottas had not one but two punctured tyres, so that's why he was unable to get around the track to the pitlane.

8-SC: So the order is Webber, Maldonado, Button, Raikkonen, Vettel, Sutil, Alonso, di Resta, Ricciardo, Masso in 10th, Hulkenberg, Glock, Vergne, Hamilton, Kovalainen in 15th, Pic, Bird, Bianchi, Magnussen, Frijns in 20th, Rosberg and Kobayashi.

9-SC: Webber of course now must put in a solid few laps following the safety car to get another gap, it was up to nearly 3 seconds before the caution period was called.

10-SC: The cars and debris have now been cleared, we should be seeing a green flag shortly.

11-SC: The lights are out on the safety car!

12: And it's back to green flag conditions! Maldonado takes the lead! He gets alongside Webber and makes it stick in the corner! Well, that's an unexpected turn for this race! Hamilton overtakes Vergne to take 13th place, and he's now behind the two Saubers. Rosberg and Kobayashi should be carving up the lower order but they're instead battling each other, meaning the Scorpions didn't even get within striking distance for Nico this lap.

13: Maldonado manages to hold onto the lead but is being absolutely hounded by Webber. The Australian can't believe he was caught napping! That battle is going to bring plenty of cars into contention for the lead, with plenty of cars in close proximity up front. Oh and Raikkonen passes Button! What a race Kimi is having, he's up to 3rd place! Alonso overtakes Sutil, he's up to 6th! Rosberg finally starts making some progress through the field, passing Frijns, but Kobayashi still remains behind the Scorpion.

14: Webber retakes the lead! He makes no mistake and uses his car's traction to get by the Venezuelan. Sutil runs wide! He was trying to overtake Alonso around the outside but simply ran out of road and he's lost several positions as a result! Oh and Ricciardo is now up to 7th as a result of also passing di Resta this lap, who lost a bit of time avoiding his teammate. What a race the young Australian is having! Massa also profits from di Resta, horrible lap for Force India!

15: Has Maldonado peaked? He's now dropped back behind Raikkonen, who could very well win this race at this rate! Rosberg is now up to 19th as he passes Magnussen, next in his sights is Bianchi's Marussia...and he's breezed passed Bianchi! 18th place now for Rosberg! Kobayashi has just found some pace and is finally passed Frijns, Magnussen and Bianchi.

16: Raikkonen and Webber are now battling hard for the lead as we approach the first round of pit stops, and what a cracking race this is turning out to be! Vergne passes Hamilton to take 12th place! Oh and Frijns has just passed Magnussen! Robin Frijns is currenty ahead of teammate Kevin Magnussen in 21st place! Oh and Massa is the first to pit! He's jumped the queue and decides now is the right time to try and undercut those ahead of him, i.e. Ricciardo, Alonso and Vettel.

17: Oh and Massa on his fresher tyres immediately sets the new fastest lap of 1:36.151. Will the other drivers react? Massa's problem is he now has to clear the Scorpions and that may take several laps. Button is being held up by Maldonado now...oh and Vettel passes Button and Maldonado on the same straight! He's taken 3rd place in his Red Bull, great lap for him! Meanwhile Hulkenberg is looking quite slow in his Sauber and he's been overtaken by Glock and Vergne in the same lap for 9th and 10th respectively. Both Rosberg and Kobayashi are able to clear Sam Bird's Marussia this lap, so they are up to 16th and 17th. Just the one driver reacts to Massa's pit stop, with Paul di Resta deciding to pit...and he rejoins in last but not far behind Massa.

18: Massa is still one of the quickest men on track as he carves up the lower order, passing Bianchi, Frijns and Magnussen all in the same lap! Oh and two more drivers are pitting, Button pits from 5th and Sutil from 12th. Button rejoins in 17th...that's behind Massa! Brilliant work from Ferrari and they are really threatening the front-runners with that early stop! Will anyone else react?

19: Vergne passes Timo Glock to take 7th place, and he's now only 3 seconds behind teammate Ricciardo, great work from the Frenchman! Massive warning signs from Felipe Massa, he's now overtaken Bird and has smashed his own fastest lap with a 1:35.547. Button also passes Bird...and di Resta is starting to make his way through the slower cars, passing Magnussen, Frijns and Bianchi. Oh and Vettel pits! Red Bull are reacting and trying to undercut Webber and Raikkonen! Hamilton also follows him in from 10th place, but where does Vettel emerge? It's in 15th place, behind Button and Massa! This may have been a master-stroke by Ferrari with Felipe here.

20: And the front-runners all stay out once again, and they must be attempting two-stoppers, and are in fact in the window for it now. Webber's lead over Raikkonen is just over a second. Sutil now passes Magnussen, but is unable to get past Frijns and lost a lot of time behind him. Kobayashi and Bird are the drivers to pit this lap, rejoining at the rear of the field.

21: Massa, BUtton and Vettel are now running into trouble in the form of the Caterhams, they have been unable to clear them this lap and as a result lapped two seconds per lap slower than Webber and Raikkonen up front. Sutil passes Frijns for 17th, but lost a lot of time stuck behind Bianchi. Similarly Hamilton passed Magnussen for 19th but then got stuck behind Frijns. Raikkonen pits! Surely Webber will need to react now, but Kimi is in the pitlane along with Kovalainen, Bianchi and Frijns! Raikkonen emerges in 12th place, that's behind Button but ahead of Vettel! Oh and great job Scorpion, they've managed to overtake Bianchi in that pit stop and Frijns is ahead!

22: Rosberg passes Pic, that puts him up to 8th place, and Massa and Button then follow through and also get by Pic. Oh Button passes Massa! Great move and that could be critical! Kovalainen passes Magnussen to take 17th place. Webber pits from the lead! This is a crucial stop for McLaren to get right if he's to maintain track position. Other drivers pitting are Hulkenberg, Rosberg, Pic and Magnussen. Webber's stop is good and he rejoins in 6th place, ahead of everyone else that's pitted already with Button right behind him. That's worked a treat for McLaren! Maldonado inherits the lead but is due to stop shortly.

23: Hulkenberg is through on Hamilton to take 13th! Just the two drivers stopping this lap, Ricciardo and Glock from 3rd and 5th respectively. So with just the top 3 yet to pit, the order is Maldonado, Alonso, Vergne, Webber, Button, Massa, Raikkonen, Vettel, Ricciardo, di Resta in 10th, Glock, Sutil, Hulkenberg, Hamilton, Kovalainen in 15th, Kobayashi, Rosberg, Pic, Bird, Frijns in 20th, Bianchi and Magnussen.

24: Oh and Button is giving Webber a really hard time on those new tyres, he's absolutely hounding him for that position but the Aussie fights back and retains the place. Maldonado and Alonso both pit! So Vergne now inherits the lead and has gone 24 laps on those tyres - surely he can't be thinking of trying a one-stop? It's a poor stop from Maldonado and Alonso actually overtakes him as a result! They emerge with Alonso in 7th and Maldonado in 9th place - his chances of a top finish just evaporated.

25: Button is past Webber! What an incredible race this is! Vergne pits, so Button is our 4th race leader of the day! Wow! Button's also set a new fastest lap of 1:35.539. Things are really slipping away for Maldonado - he's now been passed by di Resta and is 9th. Sutil passes Glock! Vergne rejoins the race in 10th place. What great drives Button and Massa have had - they really gained in that round of pit stops now in 1st and 3rd. However with Massa pitting much earlier than those around him he'll be the first to suffer tyre degredation.

26: It's another fastest lap for Button of 1:35.379, and his lead over Webber is just over a second. The cars are settling into position on track and the drivers seem to be having a breather from all the action that has already unfolded.

27: Both Button and Webber are flying, with both of them getting into the 34s, Button slightly quicker with a fastest lap of 1:34.886. They're leaving Massa in their dust at the moment. But wait! Raikkonen is flying too and has just beaten Button's lap with a 1:34.651! Rosberg passes Kobayashi! He's been held up by Kovalainen but found no way through for a few laps, but Nico has lost patience and taken the 16th from him.

28: Rosberg passes Kovalainen to get his Mercedes into 15th and into the points, but teammate Hamilton is next up and he's over 10 seconds up the road. Oh and Kobayashi is also able to clear Kovalainen to take 16th.

29: Button's keeping right onto it and his lead is now 1.6 seconds over Webber. Maldonado isn't giving up, he's just overtaken di Resta for 8th place.

30: Massa is now really starting to hurt Raikkonen, he's losing lots of time stuck behind the Ferrari. Oh and Vettel passes Raikkonen! Will he have better luck passing Felipe? Kobayashi passes Rosberg! He's taken 15th place with that move.

31: Webber is really starting to reel in Button now, as Jenson struggles on tyres several laps older than Mark's. The gap is down to under half a second! Massa is still keeping Vettel and Raikkonen at bay, oh and he now pits! Massa pits early again for the second round of stops, now he was 6 seconds behind the McLarens, so he's probably too far behind to challenge them. Vergne now passes di Resta to take 9th place, and Paul is dropping places. Glock is also through on Sutil to take 11th! Massa rejoins way down in 14th...will he be able to clear the drivers quickly again?

32: Massa pitting is vital for Vettel and Raikkonen. If they can not hold each other up they may be able to chase down the McLarens if they're battling for the lead. Webber is now fighting Button for the lead! Oh and Raikkonen and Vettel are looking pretty clumsy in 3rd and 4th, that's not going to help them catch the McLarens, which has actually helped Alonso who is lurking behind them at the moment and is in striking range. However 3rd-5th are 7 seconds behind the top 2 so they'll need to get their skates on. Hulkenberg has now passed Sutil also, so the Force Indias are fading whereas the Saubers are looking strong.

33: Oh and Button now pits from the lead! Well that is a surprise, he had the rubber to do quite a few more laps, but perhaps McLaren were trying to avoid having teammates going wheel to wheel. Glock now overtakes Paul di Resta to take 8th. Button rejoins in 12th place, ahead of Hamilton and behind the Sauber/Force India battle.

34: So Webber's lead over Vettel is 6.4 seconds, and he's currently lapping slightly quicker than the world champion. Massa and Button are having a couple of problems in the form of Sutil and Hamilton respectively - they've been unable to clear them this lap and are losing time. Di Resta now pits from 8th place, rejoining in 16th.

35: Massa and Button are still stuck behind Hamilton and Sutil - that's ruining their afternoons...Vettel pits from 2nd! That may give McLaren something to think about, but Webber seems pretty settled in his two-stop strategy. Vettel rejoins in 11th place, a few seconds behind Button.

36: Alonso overtakes Raikkonen! So the Ferrari is into 2nd place on the track, and he's been pretty quiet today but is in with a good chance of a podium. Button is finally past Sutil for 9th, and his next target is the two Saubers. Massa on the other hand is still behind Hamilton, his chances of a top 5 are slipping away!

37: So Webber's lead is now 7.1 seconds, but Alonso is lapping very quickly at the moment and took a full second out of it last lap. Button wastes no time getting past Hulkenberg for 8th, and has a bit of clear track ahead of him now. Massa finally passes Hamilton for 12th, and then Lewis promptly pits, rejoining behind the Caterhams in 18th.

38: Vettel passes Sutil for 10th, and he's doing everything he can to stay within range of 8th-placed Button. Plenty of drivers pitting this lap, with Hulkenberg, Kobayashi, Frijns and Bianchi all ducking in. Frijns and Bianchi become the first drivers of the race to go a lap down.

39: Massa passes Sutil to take 10th, he and Vettel are both flying and Seb just set the fastest lap of 1:34.581 from 9th place. Di Resta passes Rosberg to take 12th, and we now have three more drivers pitting: Sutil, Rosberg and Bird. So the order now, Webber, Alonso, Raikkonen, Ricciardo, Maldonado, Vergne, Glock, Button, Vettel, Massa in 10th, di Resta, Kovalainen, Hulkenberg, Pic, Sutil in 15th, Hamilton, Kobayashi, Rosberg, Magnussen, Bird in 20th, Frijns and Bianchi. We expect the top 7 plus Kovalainen, Pic and Magnussen to all pit shortly.

40: It's a new fastest lap this time for Massa, with a 1:34.569! Hulkenberg passes Kovalainen for 12th. No pitlane activity this lap as the drivers and teams continue to put off the inevitable final stop as long as possible. Webber's lead over Alosno is holding steady at 6.1 seconds.

41: Button overtakes Glock to take 7th place, and he's currently 21.5 seconds behind Webber, which is about the time of a pit stop so Webber needs to get his skates on. Oh and Vettel makes a mistake while trying to overtake Glock and runs wide, but luckily doesn't lose his position to Massa. Sutil and Hamilton pass Pic, using their fresher tyres for 14th and 15th. Oh and some of the front-runners are pitting! Alonso, Raikkonen, Vergne and Glock all head down pitlane!

42: Vettel is flying now, as he laps Bianchi...and he's run up the rear of Bianchi! Oh wow, that was just like what happened to Webber in Valencia, but he's been lucky and not backflipped. He has a puncture and Bianchi's car is crashed, but everything Vettel does this year seems to backfire on him! Oh and Kobayashi has now stopped! He's got a broken gearbox! Nightmare lap for Red Bull! Oh and Glock has spun! He's beached it into the gravel and can't get out! That's his first retirement of the year, and what is happening here at the Nurburgring?? Webber, Ricciardo, Maldonado, Kovalainen and Magnussen all dive for the pits, but it doesn't seem like the safety car will be called. Plus Vettel who has to pit due to his puncture. Button has the lead! Webber has rejoined and his teammate has shot by at race pace, and there was nothing Webber could do about it! Not that anyone noticed but Button set the fastest lap with a 1:34.380.

43: Button's lead will only be temporary, there's no way he'll make it to the end on those tyres. Vettel is way down in 15th now but he's not going to stop trying, he's just done a fastest lap of 1:34.269. So the order now is Button, Webber, Massa, Alonso, Raikkonen, Ricciardo, Vergne, Maldonado, di Resta, Hulkenberg in 10th, Sutil, Hamilton, Pic, Rosberg, Vettel in 15th, Kovalainen, Bird, Frijns and Magnussen. Those that will need to pit again: Button, Massa, di Resta, Hulkenberg, Sutil, Hamilton, Pic and Rosberg, so we project a podium of Webber, Alonso and Raikkonen at this point in time.

44: Oh and what a lap from Alonso! He's lapped Frijns, overtaken his teammate and set the fastest lap of the race with a 1:33.895. He's still 6.3 seconds behind Webber but if he keeps lapping like this he may give McLaren some headaches.

45: Vettel sets another fastest lap with a 1:33.651. Webber is currently 1.3 seconds behind Button but more imporantly only 5.5 ahead of Alonso. Rosberg passes Pic for 13th, and Charles immediately pits for the last time.

46: Vettel is still the fastest man on track...what could have been if he hadn't had that coming together with Bianchi? The stewards have announced that it was simply an unfortunate racing incident and no further action will be taken.

47: Vettel sets yet another fastest lap with a 1:33.483. Raikkonen is losing heaps of time behind Massa, oh but Felipe now pits so that releases Kimi, but he's 7 seconds behind 3rd-placed Alonso. Massa rejoins in 11th place, but should finish in the top 10 once di Resta and Hulkenberg pit.

48: Marussia have reported to Bird that sensors indicate his DRS will stick open if he uses it, but with Pic over 30 seconds up the road from him that won't affect him. If Vettel is to continue with his quick laps he's now going to have to battle through traffic, as he has Rosberg ahead of him. Meanwhile the gap between Webber and Alonso is now just 3.8 seconds.

49: The gap between Webber and Alonso has been cut to 2.5 seconds as he's held up by Button, oh and Jenson now pits from the lead, so Webber back into the lead but has Alonso gaining on him! Vergne passes Ricciardo to take what will now be 4th place! What a great race for Toro Rosso! Oh no! Vettel's race has become an absolute nightmare, he's just wiped off his front wing on a kerb and will need to pit yet again! So Button rejoins in 8th place, but should gain a couple of places by the race end, and Vettel rejoins in a lowly 15th. What a disaster...

50: Poor lap from Felipe Massa, he's run wide and into the gravel but managed to keep going, and also didn't lose any places. Webber and Alonso have kept the gap at 2.5 seconds, both lapping in the high 1:33s. So just 10 laps to go and it's Webber, Alonso, Raikkonen, Vergne, Ricciardo, Maldonado, di Resta, Button, Hulkenberg, Sutil in 10th, Massa, Hamilton, Rosberg, Kovalainen, Vettel in 15th, Pic, Bird, Frijns and Magnussen. Don't forget di Resta, Hulkenberg and the two Mercedes may be unable to get to the end on their current tyres, so may be due to stop again.

51: And the gap is now 2.3 seconds as neither driver really lights up the timesheets. Raikkonen is too far behind in 3rd to challenge, but has just set a new fastest lap of 1:33.232.

52: Webber pulls away a little and extends the gap to 2.5 seconds! Is that going to be too much for Alonso to chase down?

53: The last of the pit stops are happening, with the four drivers pitting that we expected, i.e. di Resta, Hulkenberg, Hamilton and Rosberg. Alonso's put in a slightly better lap than Webber and brought the gap down to 2.1 seconds, but it's clearly Webber's race to lose. Oh and problems for di Resta! He's been released without a wheelnut, but hasn't completely left the pitlane so Force India are having to wheel him all the way back! what a disaster for di Resta there. So di Resta drops all the way back to 12th place, he was running 7th and what a shame for him, he should be in about 10th.

54: Alonso is still pushing, the gap is just 1.6 seconds now! Ooh and a new fastest lap for Button with a 1:33.165, but he's 14 seconds behind Maldonado so won't be able to do much with it. Hats of to Kovalainen, he's currently keeping Sebastian Vettel on very quick tyres behind him. So the order is now Webber, Alonso, Raikkonen, Vergne, Ricciardo, Maldonado, Button, Sutil, Massa, Hulkenberg in 10th, Hamilton, di Resta, Kovalainen, Vettel, Rosberg in 15th, Pic, Bird, Frijns and Magnussen.

55: Webber now puts his foot down to record a PB lap of 1:33.544, and Alonso just can't keep up and drops back to over 2 seconds again. Massa is trying everything to get past Sutil for 8th but the German is holding his own despite his deterioating tyres. Vettel on the other hand has cleared Kovalainen and is chasing down Paul di Resta, who is currently 12th.

56: Vettel is flying again and sets a new fastest lap of 1:33.028. Rosberg now overtakes Kovalainen for 14th, so it looks like Caterham will only be able to manage one point this race.

57: Massa passes Sutil to take 8th place! Oh and Frijns has been passed by his teammate Magnussen very late in the race, so it's Magnussen P18, Frijns in last.

58: Alonso is now 2.9 seconds behind, and it looks like it's going to be Webber's first win of the season! The drivers have settled down into position now and it doesn't look like we'll have many more overtakes before the end of the race.

59: And it's the penultimate lap, Ricciardo is running in close proximity to Vergne but surely the team will have told him to not try anything silly.

60: And it's Mark Webber who wins the 2013 German Grand Prix, his first victory for McLaren and the Woking team's first win of the year! Alonso will take the championship lead with 2nd place, followed by Raikkonen who puts in another strong finish for 3rd. Vergne and Ricciardo drove their hearts out to finish 4th and 5th, Maldonado will be disappointed to have not made the podium after starting from 2nd but can be happy with his 6th place, Button will be disappointed with 7th, but is the first driver of those that stopped three times. Massa 8th, Sutil 9th, Hulkenberg 10th, Hamilton didn't have the car he needed all weekend and only managed 11th, di Resta had that pitlane issue late in the race and only made 12th, Vettel had a very poor race, and despite having the fastest car is down in 13th, Rosberg 14th, Kovalainen did well to pick up another point for Caterham in 15th, Pic 16th, Bird 17th, and Magnussen cleared his teammate late in the race to take 18th leaving Frijns down in 19th.
Those retiring, Glock records his first DNF for the season after spinning on lap 42, Kobayashi had a gearbox failure but struggled all race and wouldn't have scored many points, Bianchi tangled with Vettel and came off 2nd best, and of course Grosjean hit the wall on lap 6, with Bottas picking up punctures as a result and ending his day.

Young Driver Test

Stoffel Vandoorne has been offered drives for both Red Bull and McLaren. He has respectfully turned down the Red Bull opportunity, and has chosen to test with McLaren.

All other drivers have accepted the testing opportunities in order of preference.

The following drivers have been finalised:

Marussia: Alex Lynn & António Félix da Costa
Scorpion: Robin Frijns & Kevin Magnussen
Red Bull: Daniil Kvyat & Fabio Leimer

Davide Valsecchi is the obvious choice, as he's already contracted to the team as a reserve driver and meets the age restriction (just!). Unfortunately GvdG is too old by a few months.

Other than that, you can basically choose anyone. Maybe have a look through the real-life 2013 GP2 teams and see if there are any drivers that haven't already been chosen by other teams?
