Somewhere out there, F1 fans in a parallel universe are enjoying modern F1 history a lot more:

I'm not sure the 2000 championship was quite as close as you suggest, I would think that Villeneuve was actually closer to being a double world champion than Hakkinen was to being a triple. But yes, the others all came close to happening.

I'd have put Hamilton as 2010 Champion. He was only 24 points off the title lead going into the final race where he won convincingly, this after throwing away good points with silly incidents in Italy and Singapore. 1999 would be Irvine, especially if Salo was asked to move over at every race, just to give Irvine extra points. Salo was running 3rd at Monza and had he 'retired' Ivine would claim 5th place, he would then be handed 2nd by Schumacher at Japan giving Irvine the title by one point. Massa for 08, Hamilton 07.

Hakkinen easily deserved 1999 over Irvine. The Irishman had so many lucky breaks to even be in his position (Better reliability, Shumachers injury, Hakkinen making costly errors) and yet he still managed to choke and lose the title.

Thank god there isn't sportive justice. Otherwise Brawn GP would probably have been forced to remove the double diffuser and we would be saying that the last champion not named Vettel was Lewis Hamilton.
