Turbogirl's Grand Prix Legends - Cancelled

Post by Turbogirl »

Introduction

This weekend I visited my parents and helped my mother to find something in the basement, when I stumbled upon an old PC, that once belonged to my big brother. Good old Win98 and still fully functional. Yet, the best thing is: Not only did I rediscover two steering wheels in good condition, but I also found my brother's old collection of PC racing games: UbiSoft's F1 Racing Sim, Eidos' Official Formula 1 Racing (98/99) and Sierra's Grand Prix Legends. And since one of the two steering wheels works perfectly with GPL, I decided to take the whole package (PC, games and steering wheels) home with me to re-experience my youth.

How I got the name Turbogirl

This is as good a time as any to tell you this little story. Back in 1999, when my brother was all into GPL, I often watched him play. He wasn't very good at it, mostly because the game is incredibly hard. But that didn't stop bratty little me from taunting him for his desperate attempts to keep the Lotus 49 on the track (at Monaco). My brother finally had enough of it, handed me the steering wheel and said: "Here, little sis. You show me how it's done!"

And guess what bratty little me did? Crashing into the next best wall, of course! What did you expect?

So, my big bro nicknamed me Turbogirl to mock me in return. Well, that and because I loved the Judas Priest album "Turbo" (still do). Yeah, at first I hated the name, but as time went by, it grew on me, so I used it on this forum.

Turbogirl's Grand Prix Legends, 13 years after...

Since I haven't seen anyone try GPL on here, I decided to give it a go. Revisiting the game after almost 13 years is going to be quite a hard task, because I haven't driven any of the cars since 2001.
I'm going to play the original game with its original cars on the original tracks. I know, there are a thousand patches and additional circuits and cars available nowadays, but I want this experience to be as nostalgic and puristic as possible.
I'll play the World Championship mode: Grand Prix in full length plus 2 practice sessions. A full grid of 19 AI drivers, no driver aids at all, realistic damage. Please note, that I'm playing the german version of the game, so some of my translations might not be accurate!

I'm also not going to do this on a regular basis, because the Women's GT World Championship and the Women's GT Junior Cup in the PMMF are my top priorities at the moment.

This is also not an attempt on creating a fictional driver career, therefore I'm not going to use a fictional driver alias for this series.

Car Setups

The setups from back then are still saved on this old PC, so I'm going to use them (just to see, if they still hold up) and refine them if necessary. I'll post the setups as well, just in case some of you might be curious (or even crazy enough to copy them - don't say I didn't warn you!). ;)

F1 World Championship 1967

Teams and Drivers

Lotus (Lotus 49): Jim Clark, Graham Hill
Brabham (Brabham BT24): Jack Brabham, Denny Hulme
BRM (BRM P115): Chris Irwin, Jean-Pierre Beltoise
Cooper (Cooper T81): Jochen Rindt, Pedro Rodriguez, Jacky Ickx, Joakim Bonnier, Jo Siffert
Anglo American Racers (Eagle-Weslake T1G): Dan Gurney, Bruce McLaren, Richie Ginther
Scuderia Ferrari (Ferrari 312): Lorenzo Bandini, Chris Amon, Mike Parkes
Honda (Honda RA300): John Surtees, Turbogirl

For those of you who don't know: Honda is called Murasama and Cooper is called Coventry in the game, because of copyrights. But for this thread I'm gonna call them Honda and Cooper respectively.

Why I chose to race the Honda? Well, Honda is the only team with just one driver, so it was the most logical thing to do. Okay, not really: The Lotus is too nervous, the BRM too slow, the Brabham too boring (although pretty good), the Eagle too unreliable and the Ferrari too obvious. The Cooper is almost the same car as the Honda in this game, so it doesn't matter...

Race

Well, for my first GPL race in almost 13 years, I manage a pretty good start and grab 9th position behind Rindt. Behind me are McLaren in 10th and my teammate Surtees in 11th.
On lap 37 Rindt passes Chris Amon for 7th, I'm still in 9th position, now behind Amon's Ferrari.
On lap 42 Dan Gurney retires, which leaves me in 8th position. It's a rather boring race, because I can't go any faster to attack Amon, and McLaren behind me can't go any faster to attack me.
I get lapped by leader Jim Clark on lap 55. No Championship points for me or Honda after the first round. Let's see, where this is going...

Thank you, but that was lucky. The only tracks where I ever managed to pull something off were Kyalami, Watkins Glen and the Nürburgring. So the rest of this season might see me finish far behind Surtees and even behind the slower drivers. Oh well...

I bought this game a year or two ago, it is certainly the hardest racing game I have ever attempted! If I ever master the game, or figure a way of somehow be respectable in the game, I was thinking of using it as a basis of an historic championship. But I may never have the time or develop the skill to do so... Plus I still need to continue with Douglas Mann's NASCAR career at some point (not dead, just on long-term hiatus!).

Turbogirl's Grand Prix Legends - Round 2 Monaco

Post by Turbogirl »

Round 2 - Monaco Grand Prix

Monaco / 100 Laps / 314,5 km

Gotta say, this game is addicting, even after so many years. That's why I've decided to give Monaco a go today, the second Grand Prix of the 1967 World Championship. 100 laps plus two practice sessions will be one of the hardest races I've ever done in my entire life. I've driven the Monaco Grand Prix in GPL a couple of times 13 years ago, that's why it's not THE most hardest race in my entire life.

I love Monaco as a race track, but not when I'm driving it myself, to be honest. The aforementioned crash in the Lotus and the fact, that I never really managed to find a suitable setup for this circuit made me respect and hate Monaco for its difficulty.

My setup

I had to make a lot of changes to the original setup from 13 years ago, because some gears were transmitted so awkwardly, I was overreving the engine most of the time. And because I chose realistic damage, I'm afraid my engine might expire sooner or later if I stick to the original setup. So, a whole new transmission and some minor camber adjustments, also a little less clutch and up with the car to the same height as in Kyalami.

This is the final setup:

Steering: 16:1

Tyre: front 131 KPA // rear 159 KPA
Wheel: front 166 N/cm // rear 201 N/cm
Bump: front 3 // rear 3
Rebound: front 4 // rear 4
Camber: FL -0,75 // FR -0,50 // RL -0,75 // RR -0,50
Rubber: front 3,81 // rear 3,17
Toe: front -0,191 cm // rear 0.699 cm
Rollbar: front 280 N/cm // rear 193 N/cm
Height: front 6,35 cm // rear 6,99 cm
Brakes: 62 %

Translation: 1. Gear = 12/35, 2. Gear = 15/32, 3. Gear = 20/38, 4. Gear = 18/28, 5. Gear = 23/30
Ramp Angle: 60/30
Differential: 8/31
Clutch: 3

P.S.: Somehow I have the feeling, this setup can be refined even more, but during both practice sessions I found it to my liking, so I kept it.

Practice 1

Code: Select all

01.)  Jim Clark                 (Lotus)        1:29.50
02.)  Lorenzo Bandini           (Ferrari)      1:29.70
03.)  Denny Hulme               (Brabham)      1:29.81
04.)  Dan Gurney                (Eagle)        1:29.85
05.)  Graham Hill               (Lotus)        1:29.89
06.)  Jochen Rindt              (Cooper)       1:30.01
07.)  Jack Brabham              (Brabham)      1:30.08
08.)  Chris Amon                (Ferrari)      1:30.21
09.)  Bruce McLaren             (Eagle)        1:30.32
10.)  John Surtees              (Honda)        1:32.02

Code: Select all

11.)  Joakim Bonnier            (Cooper)       1:32.44
12.)  Pedro Rodriguez           (Cooper)       1:33.14
13.)  Turbogirl                 (Honda)        1:33.56
14.)  Richie Ginther            (Eagle)        1:33.63
15.)  Chris Irwin               (BRM)          1:33.65
16.)  Mike Parkes               (Ferrari)      1:33.66
17.)  Jo Siffert                (Cooper)       1:34.00
18.)  Ludovico Scarfiotti       (Ferrari)      1:34.03
19.)  Jacky Ickx                (Cooper)       1:34.51
20.)  Jean-Pierre Beltoise      (BRM)          1:36.38

And here we have it! Not as bad as I had expected, actually, but still miles behind my own teammate. Although 13 is my lucky number, I'm not really happy with this result.

I like Monaco in 1967 better than today, now that I look at it. The tunnel is way shorter, the harbour chicane is nonexistent and the streets appear to be much wider, but that's probably because of the narrow cars from back then. Definitely less grandstands than today, but more people on the sidelines right next to the track. Everytime I lose the car and slide through one of those humanoid cutouts, I feel uneasy, to say the least.

Practice 2

Code: Select all

01.)  Denny Hulme               (Brabham)      1:29.54
02.)  Lorenzo Bandini           (Ferrari)      1:29.61
03.)  Graham Hill               (Lotus)        1:29.66
04.)  Jim Clark                 (Lotus)        1:29.91
05.)  Jack Brabham              (Brabham)      1:30.03
06.)  Dan Gurney                (Eagle)        1:30.15
07.)  Bruce McLaren             (Eagle)        1:30.43
08.)  Chris Amon                (Ferrari)      1:30.46
09.)  Jochen Rindt              (Cooper)       1:30.46
10.)  Pedro Rodriguez           (Cooper)       1:31.68

Code: Select all

11.)  John Surtees              (Honda)        1:31.90
12.)  Joakim Bonnier            (Cooper)       1:32.52
13.)  Richie Ginther            (Eagle)        1:33.45
14.)  Mike Parkes               (Ferrari)      1:33.67
15.)  Turbogirl                 (Honda)        1:33.71
16.)  Jo Siffert                (Cooper)       1:33.80
17.)  Chris Irwin               (BRM)          1:33.85
18.)  Ludovico Scarfiotti       (Ferrari)      1:33.94
19.)  Jacky Ickx                (Cooper)       1:34.40
20.)  Jean-Pierre Beltoise      (BRM)          1:36.55

Second practice was worse than the first one, but luckily the faster lap time from before gets me to P14 on the grid, behind Ginther in the (hopefully) unreliable Eagle and in front of Irwin in the BRM, who shouldn't be a problem for me, if I manage a somewhat decent start.

Race

And what a brilliant start that was! I grab 12th from Surtees, right behind Rodriguez in the Cooper. Surtees pressures me during the first couple of laps and I have so much trouble fending him off, that Rodriguez manages to pull away from me. Nice job, John...

Lap 18: Rodriguez is almost 8 seconds away from me, Surtees 3 seconds behind me. No real problems yet, but 100 laps are going to be tiring. I expect to lose a couple of positions by the end of the race eventually.

Lap 24: Rodriguez has slowed down for some reason and I try to catch up to him. Suddenly Ginther appears in front of me. Is he the reason, Rodriguez slowed down?

Lap 31: I can finally get past Ginther, but Rodriguez has already pulled away again. He's 15 seconds ahead of me. I'm in 11th place now.

Lap 44: Rodriguez passes Amon for ninth, both only 8 seconds ahead of me. I try to go faster.

Lap 55: 16 seconds behind Amon, who's still in 10th. It's no use, I can't catch him like that. Ginther is 12 seconds behind me now, still 45 laps to go.

Lap 67: Rindt, McLaren and Brabham all retire! Suddenly I find myself in 8th position. I pray for some more retirements in front of me.

Lap 88: Bandini retires. I'm in 7th place now! Almost 15 seconds ahead of Ginther and 25 seconds behind Amon. Someone else has to retire during the next 12 laps, otherwise I'll be left without Championship points again.

Lap 98: Lady Luck answers my prayers. Rodriguez retires and I have finally arrived in the point ranks. I'm so tired of this torture, that I barely make it home. Almost spin twice on the final lap, but Ginther is too far behind to catch me now!

Thanks a lot! :D Pointrox had a GPL thread, too? Must have completely missed that. I honestly thought I was the first one.

Thanks a lot! :D Pointrox had a GPL thread, too? Must have completely missed that. I honestly thought I was the first one.

It's in the "Flat Out, Flat Broke" forum since he stopped it midway through the first season, so you're forgiven ;)

Maybe I missed it, but I don't see you mentioning what the weather is like in any session or race. If it rains or not, that is something I would like.

Ah, that's the reason why I couldn't find it. Thanks, I will definitely have a look into this one! :)

No, you didn't miss it. I never mentioned it, because the original GPL from Sierra (1998) has no rain, not even damp conditions. I don't know why the programmers never thought of including wet races into their brand new simulation. Maybe because the game is hard enough already? Sorry, but the whole season will be dry and (somewhat) sunny. Well, depending on the circuit, sometimes the car feels like I'm driving a wet race anyway...

Turbogirl's Grand Prix Legends - Round 3 Zandvoort

Round 3 - Dutch Grand Prix

Zandvoort / 90 Laps / 377,3 km

Too bad, the old Zandvoort circuit doesn't exist anymore. I kinda like it, although my Honda feels like it's swimming a bit too much (for my taste anyway). The slightly banked corners are a lot of fun and the hilly environment somehow reminds me of the Nürburgring Nordschleife, although Zandvoort has less trees and more spectators, obviously.

My setup

Steering: 18:1

Tyre: front 131 KPA // rear 152 KPA
Wheel: front 175 N/cm // rear 210 N/cm
Bump: front 3 // rear 3
Rebound: front 3 // rear 4
Camber: FL -0,75 // FR 0,00 // RL -0,75 // RR 0,00
Rubber: all four 3,17
Toe: front -0,064 cm // rear 0,254 cm
Rollbar: front 315 N/cm // rear 269 N/cm
Height: front 6,35 cm // rear 6,99 cm
Brakes: 50 %

Translation: 1. Gear = 14/33, 2. Gear = 17/29, 3. Gear = 24/32, 4. Gear = 19/22, 5. Gear = 24/24
Ramp Angle: 85/30
Differential: 7/31
Clutch: 3

20.)  Ludovico Scarfiotti       (Ferrari)      1:40.09

Oh my god! I can't believe how good the Honda is on this track! Granted, it's no Lotus or Brabham, but with me in 6th and Surtees in 9th, we might even be able to challenge the others for a podium this time around!
I actually can't remember my last Honda race at Zandvoort anymore. But I must have done at least one. Where else should this 13-year-old setup with my name on it come from? But I really can't remember the outcome of this last effort, to be honest...

20.)  Ludovico Scarfiotti       (Ferrari)      1:40.11

Second practice slightly better than the first one, but still in 6th position. Still, a pretty marvellous start into this weekend. I'm definitely looking forward to where I might end up in the race, if I'm not forced to retire.

Race

Good start. I pass Rindt before the Tarzanboocht, already in fifth! I manage to keep the Cooper behind me. Almost a whole second after lap 6. But Hill in 4th is pulling away. His Lotus accelerates much faster out of the corners, while my Honda has more topspeed. Yet, he's pulling away nonetheless.

Lap 14: Rindt is out. Too bad, that gives me no time to breathe, cause now I have the Ferrari duo of Amon and Bandini right behind me. At a gap of 2 seconds at best.

Lap 23: Hill is now around 10 seconds ahead of me, Amon 7 seconds behind me. I'm still in fifth, driving a pretty lonely race at the moment.

Lap 24: Bandini retires. Now only one Ferrari left to pressure me, if he can. Amon has closed in on me. He's only 4 seconds behind me now, Hill still 10 seconds ahead. Bonnier and Scarfiotti slow me down a bit. They really REALLY don't want to get lapped by me!

Lap 39: Gurney grabs 6th from Amon, Hill passes Brabham for 3rd, and I'm closing in on Black Jack. I try to get into his slipstream, but he won't let me.

Lap 43: I pass Brabham down Tarzanboocht for 4th.

Lap 44: Beltoise gets in the way. Brabham passes me again, but now he gets blocked by the BRM.

Lap 45: I pass both Brabham and Beltoise, using Brabham's slipstream to my advantage. Now I'm in 4th place... again.

Lap 54: Even more backmarkers to lap. I try to get as much of them as I can between me and Brabham. Now he's already 18 seconds behind. Hulme is 10 seconds ahead of me. 36 laps left to go.

Lap 60: Closing in on Hulme. He's constantly lapping slower drivers, which in turn slows him down. It's Beltoise and Scarfiotti again. Did they multiply at some point in the race?

Lap 74: Can't catch Hulme, he's too fast for me. Gurney behind me is closing in. Only 6 seconds away. This is gonna be a close one!

No luck in catching Hulme in the end. But I secure 4th place nonetheless (to my own surprise)! Pretty heavy attrition, now that I look at the results. And how the heck did I manage to record the fastest lap time? :o

Well, it's safe to say, I have just unrejectified myself! I know, I'm still in the "You lucky bastard" category, but if things keep on going like this, I might be able to score some more Championship points until the end of this season. :D

Round 4 - Belgian Grand Prix

Spa-Francorchamps / 28 Laps / 394,8 km

Ah, Spa-Francorchamps! One of the most famous race tracks in the world. 30 corners, 14.099 kilometres in length. And one of my least favourites, when I'm driving myself.

My setup

Steering: 15:1

20.)  Ludovico Scarfiotti       (Ferrari)      3:57.01

I've lost control of my Honda so many times during this first practice session, I have no idea how I'm supposed to survive the race itself. The long straights are no big problem, but drifting in the corners is quite difficult, when you haven't done it in 13 years. Most other cars swim even more, so I could be doing worse, if I would be sitting in a Lotus or a Cooper.

20.)  Ludovico Scarfiotti       (Ferrari)      3:57.01

Second practice session not much better than the first one. Let's face it: Spa is definitely not my favourite circuit (as a driver). And I think it shows. Still problems with the drifting, and when I lift, the engine takes too much time to accelerate again afterwards. To score a decent result here, I would have to drive in someone's slipstream the entire race. Pretty unlikely to happen, I guess. Well, let's just hope for the best and for a lot of attrition. If not, maybe Surtees can score one or two Championship points for the team.

Race

I'm 11th on the starting grid and my start is horrible. The Honda needs way too much time to speed up. I get passed by at least three cars immediately. Then a crash right in front of me. Looks like a Lotus coming my way. I avoid the collision and travel on.

Only a few corners later another collision. I'm lucky to avoid this one, because there's a Cooper (Rindt, I believe) sliding across the track right in front of me. Several other cars on the sidelines or just rolling out, while I pass them. A retiring BRM bumps me, but I can go on. Thank god, he didn't damage my suspension or anything...

Lap 2: Errm..., where is everyone? All of a sudden I'm in 7th position and I have no idea how and why. Then a Ferrari appears in front of me down the Masta kink. Another collision I can barely avoid. Now I'm in 6th place already!

Lap 5: I'm in fifth now. Someone else must have retired in front of me (I later find out that it was Gurney). McLaren is 15 seconds ahead of me, Bonnier 20 seconds behind me.

Lap 8: I close in on McLaren (12 seconds ahead), while Rodriguez passes Bonnier for 6th.

Lap 20: Nothing else to report. Pretty boring race, actually (besides the overly exciting first laps). Still in fifth position, unable to catch McLaren in 4th, but also "cruising" unthreatened in front of Rodriguez. 8 laps to go.

End of the race, and I have secured another points finish. Wow, look at that attrition! Oh well, without it, I would have never even gotten close to the points... :D

Mathematically, Lorenzo Bandini can still win the championship.

I'm rooting for Bandini because of this;

And I do root for you, you made the points in only your second race.
I would have thought my 'joy to the world'-song and dancing milk carton, posted in celebration of your Monaco performance, was proof enough.

Don't worry, it was. I was just joking. :)

But if I understand the premise of your alternate reality correctly, shouldn't Bandini be champion already? He was 13th in Monaco after all. Or did I miss something? Does he have to do anything else?

Honestly, I don't even know anymore. It's gotten too complicated :D.

Turbogirl's Grand Prix Legends - Round 5 France

Post by Turbogirl »

Round 5 - French Grand Prix

Rouen-les-Essarts / 60 Laps / 392,5 km

For those of you who don't know: Rouen-les-Essarts was not part of the original 1967 calendar. Instead the F1 circus camped at the Circuit Bugatti, a part of the Le Mans track. But none of the drivers liked that circuit, because it had the flair of a parking lot. So, the designers from Sierra did us all a favour and included Rouen-les-Essarts into GPL. A good decision!

My setup

Steering: 18:1

Tyre: front 131 KPA // rear 152 KPA
Wheel: front 175 N/cm // rear 210 N/cm
Bump: all 3
Rebound: front 3 / rear 4
Camber: FL -0,75 // FR -0,50 // RL -0,75 // RR -0,50
Rubber: all four 3,17
Toe: front -0,127 cm // rear 0,381 cm
Rollbar: front 315 N/cm // rear 263 N/cm
Height: front 6,35 cm // rear 6,35 cm
Brakes: 62 %

Translation: 1. Gear = 14/45, 2. Gear = 15/31, 3. Gear = 18/30, 4. Gear = 24/33, 5. Gear = 26/32
Ramp Angle: 60/30
Differential: 9/31
Clutch: 6

20.)  Ludovico Scarfiotti       (Ferrari)      2:22.35

The drifting in Rouen works a lot better for me than in Spa. I think, I'm getting used to it again. Most corners go flat out, which is good, because the Honda takes a lot of time to speed up again after you slowed down, and that ultimately disqualifies it as a winning car in one way or another (sadly).

I like the graphic details, when it comes to asphalt changes, and the tree textures look very nice for 1998.

19.)  Jacky Ickx                (Cooper)       2:21.73
20.)  Ludovico Scarfiotti       (Ferrari)      2:22.34

Second practice goes even better than the first. I'm really getting into the drifting. And just in time, as I might add! Looking at the high attrition in Spa, better drifting might have even aided me to 4th place.
I manage to outqualify McLaren, which ultimately puts me on 10th on the starting grid. Not too shabby for a comeback after 13 years.

Race

The start on the other hand is pretty shabby, even for a comeback after 13 years. But thanks to a collision right next to me, I regain a couple of positions by accident (pardon the terrible pun). I pass Surtees and try to keep close to Rindt in 6th, which works fine during the first couple of laps. Amon in 8th is right behind me.

Lap 7: Amon passes me, although I fight like a lioness. He's clearly faster than me, so I have to let him go. Content with 8th for now, but I hope for the obligatory attrition to kick in soon.

Lap 11: Amon passes Rindt for 6th, but I'm unable to catch either one of them. Hulme retires, which in turn aids me to 7th. I just have to be patient now.

Lap 26: Hill is out. I've just entered the point ranks. P6 for me at the end of this lap.

Lap 42: Rindt manages to pass Amon for 4th. I'm still in 6th position and leader Jim Clark laps me for the first time. Look at him pulling away. I wish I had that Lotus right now!

Lap 44: Bandini retires. I'm in 5th place now. Let's see, what else might be coming my way in the next couple of laps.

Lap 45: Amon retires too! I can't believe it. Again in 4th position! And still 14 laps to go. Come on, you guys in front, one more DNF and I have my first podium!

Lap 47: Spun. Curse those backmarkers! Where are the blue flags, when you need them? Oh right, they haven't been invented yet. I travel on, the car is still in good condition, nothing damaged. 4th position. Because I've already lapped Rodriguez, no real threat from him.

Lap 50: Lapped by Clark for the second time. Kinda humiliating, actually...

The race ends with me in 4th position. Too bad, I could have almost smelled that podium.

This championship is superb. 30-30 points between Clark and Hill, who could wish for more. Also, that Turbogirl chick is vey impressive, although she's mostly capitalizing from the technical failures of the others :ugeek:

I think Albert Einstein once said that capitalizing from the technical failures of others, is the smartest thing that you can do. :geek:

Round 6 - British Grand Prix

Simply because I had more free time on my hands today than usual! :D

19.)  Ludovico Scarfiotti       (Ferrari)      1:49.68
20.)  Jochen Rindt              (Cooper)       no time

Well, straights, straights and more straights. Highspeed at its finest. You might think, this would aid me, because the Honda has tremendous topspeed. True, but we have slow corners like Woodcote, Stowe and Club as well, which can easily nullify all the advantages the Honda has on the long straights.
Another weakness of my car is its chassis, which is clearly inferior to Chapman's Lotus 49 and Brabham's Brabham. But then again, who am I to complain, after I've just recorded the fourth fastest lap time right on the first day?

Before you ask: I have no idea, why the game decided to run Rindt with no recorded lap time. I didn't even know it could to that, actually. :?

20.)  Ludovico Scarfiotti       (Ferrari)      1:49.68

I'm working on the transmission a little bit, just as an experiment. Maybe I'll discover a solution, that makes my Honda go even faster. But in the end, I stick with the setup I've posted. None of my changes really improved anything.
I lose a couple of valuable grid positions, because a lot of drivers go much faster this time. Rindt is back too, now with a recorded lap time to his name. I end up in 6th on the starting grid, behind Hulme in the Brabham, but in front of Bandini in the Ferrari. That's going to be a tough start...

Race

As usual, the Honda acts like a stranded whale, when it comes to starting, but once it has sped up, I regain all the lost positions and more! Hulme and Gurney have a little misunderstanding while fighting for 4th, so I enter Hulme's slipstream and pass him down Farm Straight. After the first lap, I'm already in 5th position, but the battle is more intense than normal.

Lap 9: After so many laps pressuring me, Hulme has an accident and retires. Amon, who inherits 6th place now, is already 7 seconds behind me, which gives me a bit time to breathe, before I try to go faster. Maybe I can close in on Gurney during the next couple of laps.

Lap 16: I'm right behind Gurney's Eagle now, but he's just as fast as me. Then, a BRM appears in front of us, unwilling to be lapped (as usual). I enter Gurney's slipstream several times and wait for my chance to attack, while he struggles with the BRM some more.

Lap 18: I'm close enough to attack now. Right beside Gurney in Woodcote, I pass him down the finish line and shut the door in Copse. Alright, 4th position!

Lap 34: I'm leaving Gurney in the dust even more. He's now 14 seconds behind me, while Brabham in third is only 6 seconds ahead of me.

Lap 39: There is Brabham now. He was slowed down by those backmarkers I have been overtaking during the last couple of laps. Not even a second ahead anymore. I hope for some more backmarkers. Maybe they'll help me get past Brabham like they helped me get past Gurney earlier.

Lap 44: And here comes a BRM again. What a surprise. This must be the 10th time I've lapped that car. And he always behaves as if we're fighting for positions. Brabham struggles with the BRM, while I close in on the two. My chance is coming, I can feel it.

Lap 47: Dammit, no luck this time. Brabham manages to lap the BRM and I stay in 4th position behind him for now. Still 33 laps to go. Don't think this is over yet, Jack!

Lap 52: Ha, another backmarker in the way! Looks like a Cooper this time. Maybe now. Entering Brabham's slipstream.

Lap 54: Finally! I pass Brabham down the Hangar Straight. Third place now. But Brabham starts to pressure me immediately. That BT24 is one fast bastard.

Lap 58: Perfect. Another moving chicane. I lap the backmarker as fast as I can and let Brabham deal with him afterwards. It slows him down a bit. Suddenly another car comes spinning along the track at Maggotts. It's a Lotus. Now I'm in second place! Amazing! And still 22 laps to go. Looks like Hill is leading us now. I could still win this, if GPL plays by the book (Hill never won at Silverstone).

Lap 76: Hill is 18 seconds ahead of me. I'll never catch him on my own. He has to retire, otherwise I'll stay in second place until the end of the race.

GPL obviously doesn't play by the book. Hill wins Silverstone for the first time in his career, I'm second with Gurney in third. Oh well, I really can't say I'm disappointed... :D

8th, 6th, 4th, 5th, 4th, 2nd, average finish 4,83. We have Ms. Consistency over here.
I just hope you won't get Ricciardo'ed.

Thank you! I hope so, too. After Rindt not recording a lap time for some reason and Hill winning Silverstone, who knows what GPL will do next?

Round 7 - German Grand Prix

Nürburgring / 15 Laps / 342,5 km

Ah, the famous Nordschleife in all its rendered glory. Granted, I don't know too well how it really looked back in 1967, aside from the few photographs I've seen so far, but because I only live a couple of miles away from the real thing, I definitely know how it looks today. Before you ask: Yes, I drove on the Nordschleife in real life as well, because it's open to the public during most of the weekends. Most of the time I was a co-driver for either my brother or my father, because it was his car, but the few laps I got to drive myself were simply amazing! Even for someone like me, who is way too chicken in real life to ever become a competitive race driver.

My setup

Steering: 17:1

Tyre: front 131 KPA // rear 152 KPA
Wheel: front 166 N/cm // rear 201 N/cm
Bump: all 3
Rebound: all 3
Camber: FL -0,75 // FR -0,75 // RL -0,50 // RR -0,50
Rubber: all four 3,81
Toe: front 0,000 cm // rear 0,444 cm
Rollbar: front 350 N/cm // rear 350 N/cm
Height: front 8,26 cm // rear 9,53 cm

Driving the Nordschleife in real life is MUCH better than in GPL, because you can't compare a simulation from 1998 with reality (in reality you can feel the track with your car). Especially when the skyline is as crappily rendered as in GPL. It looks more like a blue, six-sided room with a roof on top that is actually darker blue than the rest of "wall-heaven". It just looks weird.
Despite that, the green hills and the trees look beautiful. 13 years ago I once won the Nürburgring Grand Prix, but that was in an Eagle. Don't expect me to repeat this miracle with the Honda. Real-life experience aids me here, because I know all corners of the Nordschleife very well, and I learn those few changes from 1967 in the first practice session. But this knowledge still doesn't improve my car...

The Honda definitely has problems with the Nordschleife. There are almost no straights, but enough narrow corners like the Karussell to remind you of the fact, that you're driving around in an overpowered, underdeveloped white elephant. You wanna hear my advice on whom you should place your bets? On a Lotus, that's for sure.
As for me: Well, if there isn't a lot of attrition like in the previous rounds, you will find me way outside the point ranks, maybe not even in the top ten. And that was the optimistic version.

Race

Oh great! A beautifully horrific start. My clunky elephant refuses to speed up like it should, and I'm already down to 17th before the Südkehre. I manage to pass one car in front of me before entering the Nordschleife at Hatzenbach, but that's not very pleasing, when you come from 14th on the grid.

While chasing upwards Kallenhard, I see a whole bunch of rivals right in front of me, but it will be hard enough already to overtake just a single one of them.

Lap 3: I'm now in 14th position, because two other cars (Surtees and Bonnier) have retired in front of me. Still pushing as hard as I can, but kicking an elephant in the butt doesn't make it faster, only angrier.

Lap 4: Finally managed to pass Ickx. That leaves me in 13th place.

Lap 7: Bandini is out. I'm in 12th position now, but this race is really underwhelming. Why aren't more rivals retiring? They should be dropping like flies. This is the Nordschleife, we're talking about, the Green Hell. You can't tell me, this one is easier to survive without an accident than Rouen-les-Essarts!

Lap 9: McLaren retires. I'm in 11th place, and I notice a Lotus in my mirrors. I'm getting lapped by Clark already? Gimme a break...

Lap 12: Irwin retires his BRM, which aids me to 10th. But still, one of the most awful race performances I've had so far (the ones I remember from 13 years ago included, of course).

Lap 14: I pass Siffert on the long straight down Tiergarten. The only spot on the entire circuit, where my powerful engine really is an advantage. So, ninth place for me now.

Rodriguez retires on the final lap, which leaves me in a lucky 8th position. Oh well, same result as in Kyalami. I just came full circle, I guess...

Driving round the Nordschliefe is something that I would love to do one day. I've driven round the Manx TT course and been up the Col de Turini (and tried doing Monaco, but road closures prevented that) but I have yet to drive round a purpose-built racetrack. How safe is it (ie how many of the people that go round are lunatics)? Not many going round the Manx TT track were loonies, but then they were public roads with traffic in both directions, with a number of towns and villages on route...

Of course you'll find the obligatory bunch of loonies on the Nordschleife, too. Actually it's most fun to come and watch on Sundays, when they are crashing their most beloved Porsches and other expensive cars, just because they misjudged certain corners. The highest crashrate is probably at Brünnchen or Fuchsröhre. Admission is free at all places. It's way more exciting than most official races.

If you drive a little more careful (like I did), they will pass you left and right, but as long as you stay on your line and don't get in their way, you're fine. One time, when my father was piloting me around the Nordschleife, some fool had just wrecked his car down the Fuchsröhre and the track was completely blocked. It takes a while for an ambulance or salvagers to get to certain spots on the circuit, because it's so long and surrounded by woods.

Oh, and let's not forget about the bikers! They're also out on the track at the same time as the cars. This is a perfect example of what you have to expect when you're on the Nordschleife on Sundays: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-qfEJYLaK8.

This right here is my favourite crash collection. A typical sunday at Brünnchen, you might say: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfHJCv_S6iI

But I would suggest, you drive the Nordschleife yourself and not as a co-driver like I did. The first couple of times my reaction was almost like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3r6LX6-v-u8. That's Augusto Farfus and his poor wife, btw. You can clearly see, that she had no idea, what was coming her way.

01.)  Jim Clark                 (Lotus)        1:23.55
02.)  Graham Hill               (Lotus)        1:23.98
03.)  Jack Brabham              (Brabham)      1:24.27

20.)  Ludovico Scarfiotti       (Ferrari)      1:40.44

Actually, I'm extremely lucky, the Canadian Grand Prix of 1967 isn't held on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, because that circuit is a lot more stop-and-go than my Honda could handle. Instead, Mosport Park is a mix of long corners through the woods, which go almost flat out, and bend straights - all in all the perfect environment for my overpowered elephant!
I'm very happy with P7 in the first practice session, but then again, I'm happy with anything that is better than my abysmal Nürburgring result!

I expect a couple of rivals to go faster than in practice 1. They always do that, why should it be different now? Preparing to be demoted to the lower end of the top ten, but not without a fight! I'm giving it my all, just to better my previously recorded lap time a little bit. And it works, I crack the 1:24 mark!
I'm happy with that accomplishment, even though it doesn't change anything in the overall standings. I'm still in 7th position on the grid tomorrow, only this time on the same row as my teammate Surtees. If he plays along, we could help each other out by letting the other one drive into our slipstream during the race. That might help our Hondas speeding up, I believe. Too bad, the game doesn't feature team strategy in any kind. That would have been awesome!

Race

The slipstream-theory has given me an idea! Hulme and Gurney start right in front of me. I try to start as good as possible, stay close to either one of them. Gurney tries to cut me off, but with that maneuver, he gives me the opportunity to get into his slipstream, which indeed gets my Honda up to speed even quicker!
I stick as close to Gurney's Eagle as possible, and he helps me get past Hulme. Thanks, Dan! You're a wonderful "teammate". ;)

Lap 8: Alright, enough clinging to that Eagle. I pass Gurney to grab 4th, then a Lotus appears in front of us! I manage to avoid the collision at the last second, but Gurney hits the Lotus, which puts them both out of the race. And I'm already in third position!

Lap 11: I cling to Brabham via slipstream, while Hulme has closed in on us, pressuring me for third.

Lap 13: Hulme is falling behind, because he's in a fight with Bandini for fourth now.

Lap 14: Bandini passes Hulme, but thanks to Black Jack's slipstream, I've managed to open a gap of 8 seconds to the Ferrari already.

Lap 16: The first backmarkers appear in front of us. Time to leave Brabham behind now. I use his slipstream to my advantage, while he engages into a fight with the BRM, and I pass both of them in one clean swipe. Well, as clean as it gets anyway, because there was only one inch left between me, the BRM and the grass. But I did it! P2 for me, while Brabham gets slowed down by the BRM some more.

Lap 20: Wow! Clark is 18 seconds ahead of me. That's quite a gap, and I'm desperate to use the slipstream of each appearing backmarker to make up more ground, if I can.

Lap 22: Clark's fastest lap time so far was 1:25.35. My current fastest time is 1:25.52. That's promising enough. Maybe he gets slowed down by a couple of backmarkers soon.

Lap 39: Clark has increased his speed and is pulling away. Now his lap time is 1:24.95. My car is getting lighter too, but not as fast as his, obviously. My fastest lap time is only 1:25.44.

Lap 46: Clark is over 40 seconds ahead. I'll never catch him on my own.

Lap 77: Pretty much driving my own race now. No one in front of me, no one behind me pressuring me for positions. Some occasional backmarkers here and there, but not as many as before. Maybe the high attrition has kicked in once again. Lapping a Ferrari for the umpteenth time.

Lap 86: Ladies and gentlemen, for the first time since the beginning of this season, a race will be won by someone other than a Lotus! Clark has just retired, which leaves me in the lead for the first time in 13 years. Careful now, I have to bring that win home!

I did it! I can't believe I won a race in a Honda! Would someone pinch me please, cause it feels like a dream! YAY! (Warning: This song might get stuck in your head FOREVER!) :D :D :D

Congrats, very good race. You have proven once again the saying that to win, you must first cross the finish line :)
You forgot to add Surtees' points to Honda's total by the way

Thank you very much! I hope, Watkins Glen will be just as good, because I love that circuit. But next on the calendar is Monza. Highspeed is always good for the Honda. :D

I haven't forgotten to add Surtees' points, actually. The old system from 1967 only counts the results of the best placed car for each team. That's why Lotus only has 64 points, although Hill and Clark have scored a combined 82 points so far. GPL counts the results like that, too. I only copy and paste what I see on my monitor, so it must be correct, I think. Otherwise teams with four drivers like Cooper would have an advantage over teams with two or less drivers like Lotus or Honda. Some actual GT serieses like the ADAC GT-Masters use the same calculation system.

8 races in, and still yet to DNF? That in itself is almost as impressive as your first win... Max Chilton would be proud!

There is a little secret to that: I'm a pretty safe driver, when it comes to video games. I've noticed, that I'm much more calm behind the wheel of a video game than behind the wheel of real car. In the game, you simply push a button when you crash and everything's fine. Not so in real life.

But more important is the fact, that I always play it safe with my setups. They're pretty conservative, in case you haven't noticed it. I try to prevent tyre damage as good as I can, and I'm only using about 85 to 90 % of the engine's power output at best. That's much more important to me than fastest lap times. That's why I was so surprised, when I recorded one during the Zandvoort race. I always go for durability with my setups. If you manage to do that, most of the available cars in GPL won't give up on you so easily (exceptions are the Eagle and the Lotus, of course).

So, basically the only things that could put me out of a race would be a rare random technical failure (oil pressure, camshaft, and a few other things you have no influence on with the setup you choose) or a mass collision in which I have nowhere left to go. Surtees only retired so often, because he's constantly involved in accidents. Now Brabham on the other hand is almost as good as me when it comes to retirements. One out of 8 races isn't so bad either. ;)

I thought GPL didn't have tyre wear.

Thank you! :)

Well, technically there is no tyre wear in GPL, that's true. You'll only lose traction when the tyres heat up too much. But then again, an overheated tyre can blow sooner or later in real life, that's why my brother and I always called this "tyre damage", although it never comes to this in the game. Only AI drivers can retire due to tyre damage, which is kinda strange, actually, because the player can't, no matter what he does.

So, pardon me for using "tyre damage" as a synonym for "losing traction due to overheated tyres". It just sounds more realistic. To be honest, I would have liked realistic tyre damage in a simulation as close to real life as GPL. Oh well, you can't have everything, I suppose...

Edit: Okay, after reading this post again, I think I should clarify, that I have never found a good way to cool down my tyres, once they've heated up. Even if I slow down significantly for ten laps or more, nothing changes. That's why I call it "tyre damage", because my tyres are definitely dead, once they reach a certain temperature. Maybe now you'll understand better, what I was trying to say.

Round 9 - Italian Grand Prix

Monza / 68 Laps / 391,0 km

Here we are at Monza, the temple of highspeed. And we visit this beautiful circuit in a time, when there were no chicanes built yet. Rettifilo was the name of a grandstand, most corners go flat out... In short: A perfect environment for my Honda, I hope!

My setup

Steering: 14:1

Tyre: front 138 KPA // rear 145 KPA
Wheel: front 166 N/cm // rear 201 N/cm
Bump: all 3
Rebound: all 4
Camber: FL -1,00 // FR -0,50 // RL -1,00 // RR -0,25
Rubber: all four 2,54
Toe: front 0,000 cm // rear 0,190 cm
Rollbar: all 298 N/cm
Height: front 5,08 cm // rear 5,71 cm
Brakes: 58 %

Translation: 1. Gear = 14/33, 2. Gear = 17/29, 3. Gear = 19/25, 4. Gear = 25/27, 5. Gear = 25/24
Ramp Angle: 85/30
Differential: 7/31
Clutch: 5

Practice 1

Code: Select all

01.)  Jim Clark                 (Lotus)        1:29.94
02.)  Graham Hill               (Lotus)        1:30.10
03.)  Jack Brabham              (Brabham)      1:30.44

13.)  Joakim Bonnier            (Cooper)       1:38.46

19.)  Jacky Ickx                (Cooper)       1:47.97
20.)  Ludovico Scarfiotti       (Ferrari)      1:48.74

I tend to believe, dr-baker might have cursed me by talking about my nonexistent DNF rate, because I just drove the usual slower installation laps and then attempted a first fast lap, when suddenly a very slow Scarfiotti appears right in front of me round Curva Grande. It's a blind spot, so I don't notice him in time.
I try to avoid a collision, but my right front wheel goes over his left rear, I make a couple of salti in mid-air before crashing, which only destroys my suspension in the game, although I land upside-down in the gravel.
But let's not end this series on a low: Let's pretend I got out of the wreck uninjured, and me and my mechanics have to spend the entire night to repair the car in time for the second practice session. I know, I could just push Enter and go on as if nothing happened, but let's keep this a little bit more realistic, shall we?
So I'll leave it at P16 after the first practice and see, if I have better luck in the second session. Oh well, it could be worse. This could have happened during the race, which would be a pity, because the Honda seems to like Monza very much!

Practice 2

Code: Select all

01.)  Jim Clark                 (Lotus)        1:29.75
02.)  Jack Brabham              (Brabham)      1:30.11
03.)  Turbogirl                 (Honda)        1:30.26
04.)  Graham Hill               (Lotus)        1:30.30

06.)  Dan Gurney                (Eagle)        1:30.43
07.)  Lorenzo Bandini           (Ferrari)      1:30.46
08.)  Jochen Rindt              (Cooper)       1:30.92
09.)  John Surtees              (Honda)        1:31.07
10.)  Chris Amon                (Ferrari)      1:31.64

Code: Select all

11.)  Bruce McLaren             (Eagle)        1:32.06
12.)  Pedro Rodriguez           (Cooper)       1:35.85
13.)  Chris Irwin               (BRM)          1:35.93
14.)  Joakim Bonnier            (Cooper)       1:38.46
15.)  Jo Siffert                (Cooper)       1:45.08
16.)  Richie Ginther            (Eagle)        1:45.57
17.)  Mike Parkes               (Ferrari)      1:45.93
18.)  Jean-Pierre Beltoise      (BRM)          1:47.10
19.)  Jacky Ickx                (Cooper)       1:48.26
20.)  Ludovico Scarfiotti       (Ferrari)      1:48.75

Okay, for the second practice session, I decide to do something rather unusual: Change the steering to 14:1, experiment a little on the transmission and choose a different differential. Why? Because I have the feeling, I could repeat my maiden win with the Honda here in Monza with a more risky setup. And since the result speaks for itself, I'll stick with this new and improved version and post it instead of the original one. Let's see, what the race might have in store for me...

Race

P4 on the starting grid, and it's a pretty good start. I only lose one position to a better starting Hulme, but once the Honda is up to regular speed, I pass him again for fourth before approaching the Curva Grande. Brabham isn't that far ahead, only half a second, and the Honda (especially with the refined setup) is easily on par with the BT24. This is going to be a good race.

Lap 5: Still in fourth position. Bandini has passed Hulme for fifth and is now a second behind me. No real pressure there.

Lap 8: I pass Brabham for third at Della Roggia. It takes a bit of zig-zagging to persuade him to finally hand over his position to me. Brabham falls behind a bit, after I shut the door at Lesmos, and he gets attacked by Hulme and Bandini immediately, while I pull away unthreatened. P3 for me now!

Lap 14: The first backmarkers appear and I try to use them to my advantage, while Hill in second loses precious time trying to get past them. No idea, why the AI seems to have so much trouble with its own patterns. I enter Hill's slipstream and wait for my chance to attack.

Lap 28: As you can see, my waiting was to no avail. We have lapped some of the backmarkers three times by now, but Hill always manages to get past them before I can attack him. He's currently 3 seconds ahead of me, while Brabham in fourth is already 20 seconds behind.

Unfortunately no (real) luck for me today. The Honda was very good, but the Lotus duo was simply unbeatable. I stay in third until the end of the race. Still a pleasing result, I think.

Round 10 - USA Grand Prix

Watkins Glen / 108 Laps / 399,8 km

Welcome to the penultimate round of the 1967 Formula 1 World Championship at Watkins Glen, or simply "The Glen", as most Americans call it (at least I think they do...). It's one of my most favourite tracks in GPL, because it's easy to learn and so much fun to drive. But in a Honda...? Well, let's find out!

My setup

Steering: 16:1

Tyre: front 124 KPA // rear 145 KPA
Wheel: front 158 N/cm // rear 193 N/cm
Bump: all 3
Rebound: all 4
Camber: all four 0,000
Rubber: all four 2,54
Toe: front 0,000 cm // rear 0,063 cm
Rollbar: all 280 N/cm
Height: front 5,71 cm // rear 6,35 cm
Brakes: 55 %

Translation: 1. Gear = 14/32, 2. Gear = 17/29, 3. Gear = 26/33, 4. Gear = 27/30, 5. Gear = 25/24
Ramp Angle: 85/30
Differential: 7/31
Clutch: 4

Practice 1

Code: Select all

01.)  Turbogirl                 (Honda)        1:06.31
02.)  Jim Clark                 (Lotus)        1:06.33
03.)  Graham Hill               (Lotus)        1:06.69
04.)  Jack Brabham              (Brabham)      1:06.73
05.)  Dan Gurney                (Eagle)        1:06.75
06.)  Denny Hulme               (Brabham)      1:06.86
07.)  Lorenzo Bandini           (Ferrari)      1:07.01
08.)  Jochen Rindt              (Cooper)       1:07.48
09.)  Chris Amon                (Ferrari)      1:07.68
10.)  John Surtees              (Honda)        1:08.07

Code: Select all

11.)  Bruce McLaren             (Eagle)        1:08.25
12.)  Pedro Rodriguez           (Cooper)       1:10.53
13.)  Chris Irwin               (BRM)          1:11.00
14.)  Joakim Bonnier            (Cooper)       1:12.47
15.)  Jo Siffert                (Cooper)       1:17.38
16.)  Richie Ginther            (Eagle)        1:17.71
17.)  Mike Parkes               (Ferrari)      1:18.09
18.)  Jean-Pierre Beltoise      (BRM)          1:18.90
19.)  Jacky Ickx                (Cooper)       1:19.73
20.)  Ludovico Scarfiotti       (Ferrari)      1:20.09

We have finally arrived at Watkins Glen, one of the very few circuits in GPL I really love. It's rather different from the layout of today, and it's the only circuit where I managed to win races constantly and in different cars: Ferrari, Eagle, Brabham and even Lotus. But some of its corners aren't to the liking of my Honda and its horrible acceleration, so I'm not sure to win this time around. But then again, P1 right in the very first practice session is a rather good sign, don't you think?

And here is where the fun begins! How many of my rivals will be able to go faster than in the first practice session, and how many will be able to go faster than me? Well, Clark can... of course! Didn't expect less from him, although the others seem to have bigger problems cracking the lap time I've recorded before and the one I've recorded now. Oh well, still P2 for me on the starting grid!

Race

For the first time this season, I'm starting from the front row. Unfortunately on the outside, and the first corner turns right. The guy with the green flag gives the signal, and off we go! I immediately pull to the right to cut off Clark and manage to stay in the lead, while the Lotus gets passed by Brabham in the BT24. First lap out of 108 laps in total, and I'm already in P1. Did I mention, that I love Watkins Glen?

Lap 10: Clark is out. I'm still in the lead, still followed by Brabham, although I've managed to get at least five to six lapped backmarkers in between him and me. There comes another one, and I easily pass him on the outside of the Loop.

Lap 20: Brabham is now 3 seconds behind me. As long as I don't make any unnecessary mistakes, this gap is big enough to call my position unthreatened. Still leading the pack after 20 laps. Lapped some backmarkers twice already.

Lap 50: Still in the lead, with Brabham in second place 5 seconds behind me. Lapping Scarfiotti for the seventh time now.

Lap 69: We have a new number 2 in Graham Hill. He's 8 seconds behind me, while I lap Scarfiotti for the ninth time. Still unthreatened in the lead without any strange engine noises and a perfectly stable tyre temperature.

Lap 75: Hill retires, which leaves Brabham in second place again. I had some trouble lapping a Cooper for the tenth time in the meantime, so the gap between Black Jack and me has shrunk to mere 4 seconds currently. Nothing to worry about, though.

Lap 90: Brabham is now 6 seconds behind, after some more backmarkers acting as moving chicanes between me and him. Lapped Ickx and Scarfiotti for the 12th time now.

Lap 100: Mere 8 laps to go, Brabham 15 seconds behind me. My tyres are beginning to reach critical level, but I should be able to cruise this one home from hereon.

Victory number 2! And I promise, I will spare you the YAY this time around. Well, I won't be able to fight for the Championship title anymore, with only one round left to go, but I could still challenge Brabham for third in the Driver's Standings!

Clark and Hill equal on points into the final round. Epic.

It sure is. Clark has won more Grand Prix than Hill this season, so he's probably the one who'll snatch the title in the end, if both Lotus' make it through. But, who knows? Maybe we'll get to witness a surprise in Mexico! :)
