The Engine Constructors Championship

Post by Phoenix »

A new idea I've just had. I calculated how many points did Renault, Mercedes and Ferrari score over the first three races of the season a week ago (as a matter of fact, Ferrari came out last...) and thought I could apply this to other F1 seasons. For all intents and purposes, I'll begin in 1958, when the Constructors Championship was established, to make my calculations easier.

1958
1.- Vanwall (48)
2.- Ferrari (40)
3.- Coventry-Climax (32)
4.- BRM (18)
5.- Maserati (6)

1959
1.- Coventry-Climax (40)
2.- Ferrari (32)
3.- BRM (18)

1960
1.- Coventry-Climax (48)
2.- Ferrari (26)
3.- BRM (8)
4.- Maserati (3)
5.- Castellotti (3)
6.- Porsche (1)

Historic records:
1.- Coventry-Climax (2): 1959, 1960
2.- Vanwall (1): 1958

Brilliant idea, although the late-60s to Mid-70s are going to be a bit dull.

I would count just the highest-placed car rather than all of them.

That's a good point. I'm going to rewrite the points total to reflect that.

Meanwhile, I'm going to do the next three seasons.

How about an alternative championship which eliminated anyone who had the winning engine (for instance if Mercedes wins this year's championship, you also eliminate any teams with Mercedes engines)? Not got time to do it myself at the moment but putting the idea out there.....

Still think Ford Cosworth will win 1982 with Williams, McLaren, Lotus, Tyrrell and even Brabham for a few races.

1983 is where is probably gets really interesting!

84 and 85 will most likely be TAG/Porsche, then we'll get a 6 year clean sweep of Honda, then a 6 year clean sweep of Renault (even with Schumacher having Ford engines in 1994).
