He'll become the next Reine Wisell. Wisell, for those who don't know, was a Swede who in 1970 did the same thing as Magnussen would do, replacing the tragically deceased Jochen Rindt, scoring a podium on debut, but never repeating the feat ever again. I like Magnussen and I would be disappointed if that was already it.

They would still probably have wasted it all anyway, much as they did in the early 1990's when they had access to Renault's engines then.

Yeah, but their car in 1997 was good enough to contend for wins - certainly, Panis would've won the Spanish GP that year if Eddie Irvine wasn't busy being Eddie Irvine.

And Panis, on a one-stop, was in also contention FTW in Argentina from P3 on the grid. But he retired with a hydraulic problem. Trulli of course, led the first half of the Austrian GP later that year but developed engine problems, was jumped at the midway stops by Villeneuve and later retired with a blow-up.

Well, he has already scored a first podium, but thanks to Red Bull's arrogance, the FIA had to deprive him of it. But he did have a first podium for 4 1/2 hours!

Not a lot. Ralf would have been at the same level as Heikki and Jarno. I think he might have accepted it when he tested for FORCE INDIA in 2008. Desperation if I ever saw it

I think they would have been in the frame for 3rd in the WCC, because frankly, Williams was light years ahead, Ferrari was only close because they didn't piss away many points like Jacques did.

You're probably right about that. After all, Panis was 3rd in WDC before injuring his legs and Villeneuve even described him as a threat in the championship IIRC.

Correct. It was after the Spanish GP where JV was quoted as saying that "Olivier (Panis) is a legitimate threat to our Championship challenge". Or words very similar to that...

Panis'' 1997 pre-Canada crash is a brilliant what-if.

'97 - whole year with Minardi
'98 - maybe Briatore hires him for third driver position
'99 - keeps him there
'00 - replaces Wurz with him
'01 - nothing happens, Renault overtake still happens
(Button stays at Williams for third driver position?)
'02 - Fisichella stays at Renault with Trulli and Alonso
(Button goes to Jordan)
'03 - Alonso replaces Fisichella
(Button goes to BAR, timeline turns back to normal happenings)?

In 1995 Ligier were rumoured to be considering Robby Gordon over Pedro Diniz for 1996. Looking at his CART career, I would say he maybe picks up a couple more points than Diniz, but not many. The 1996 Ligier was a crapbox - the Monaco Grand Prix win disguises that the Sauber and probably even the Tyrrell were better cars. In 1997 Prost has to drop Gordon in order to take Mugen-Honda engines (as Prost can't and won't drop Panis). Unless Jordan are interested, Robby Gordon probably goes back to America.

Rubens would have recorded podium finishes and a win or two in 2012, but would probably have left after their torrid 2013 and gone into retirement. I can't see him wanting to continue after a repeat of the miserable 2011 season.

Well, seeing as it may have been a five year contract, I think Barrichello would have played into the contract considering that he was always a person who was a team player. Especially with developing a car, which Williams has needed a driver who could give great technical feedback for a while.

So, if that was the case he signed a 5 year contract, here's how I think it may have turned out.

2012 - Rubens proves to be a valuable asset to the team, with more consistent, cleaner driving than Maldonado. As a result, he outscores Pastor, taking a win and a few podiums along the way. Maldonado still wins the Spanish GP. He stays on with the contract.

2013 - Bottas is kept as a reserve and Maldonado and Barrichello stay. Since the car was just absolutely dreadful, Rubens can only manage 10 points, while Pastor claims just that one meagre point from Hungary. Ruben's tech feedback still proves to be valuable, and he still wishes to lead Williams to the front. So, he wishes to stay as a team player.

2014 (so far) - Bottas get's his chance alongside Rubens. Rubens scores a podium in Albert Park in the fantastic FW36, while the pace drops off in Malaysia and Bahrain thanks to the low rear end grip and tyre wear issues. Nearly scores a podium in Bahrain though, but finishes where his pace shouldn't have put him. He is newly motivated with the great car at his disposal.

Difficult to say how well Rubens would have coped with these new cars. They are less physical to drive, which would be an advantage to him perhaps, but then agree certain drivers (Raikkonen and Sutil come to mind) just haven't got to grips with them.

I considered using Grand Prix 2 mods to run a simulation of this idea. However, if that had happened, then unless Bernie could convince some big names to enter F1, then it'd sunk in a few years, leaving the new Grand Prix World Championship (or GP1 as I named it) in it's place.

For 2010, I had Cosworth and Mercedes the sole engine suppliers in F1, with Mercedes taking a works team, Sauber, who broke apart from BMW and rejoined F1, and Force India, and Cosworth agreeing, under pressure from the FIA, still in charge of F1, supplying Williams, and 9 new teams to make up the field: Hispania, Virgin, Lotus, USF1, Stefan GP, Villeneuve GP, Formtech (who took on the Brabham name), N.Technology and Superfund. (Of course, the real reason for so many new teams was I needed 13 teams for the mod to work).
GP1, meanwhile had convinced Toyota and BMW to remain in F1, and along with the 8 teams who left F1, had Prodrive, ART, Dams, Lola and Epsilon Euksadi joining them (of course, some of these teams are unrealistic, but the 13 team rule had to be met).

I never did get round to running the series however, mainly as I thought it up during my GCSE's

Just realised something.

Jean-Louis Schlesser is the nephew of Jo Schlesser.
Jo Schlesser was killed racing the magnesium bodied Honda RA302.
McLaren used Honda engines in the 1988 season.

Therefore Jean-Louis deliberately hit Senna as revenge on Honda for building such a dangerous car.
