Re: 2014 NewF1 Season - Preparations for Jerez test

Post by AustralianStig »

Please keep all driver negotiation, chassis plans etc. to the silly season thread.

Testing:
As last year teams must submit details for the Jerez test.

Teams will bring two cars to the test, and can run both cars for a maximum of 100 laps each.

Multiple drivers can be run in the same car, but changing drivers takes 5 laps.

Please post your plans, including who is driving which cars at what times, and what type of runs you would like to do.

If your driver is a loan driver he MAY drive for both a NewF1 team and NewGP2 team as the test days are on different days.

Any questions?

Yep, Caterham will do that; primarily because I'm too much of a lazy bastard to come up with my own plans :P

First blood to Red Bull in 2014 as Kobayashi tops test day
Kamui Kobayashi took the best possible first step to defending his 2013 title today, by being the only man to break into the 1:17s and thus assuring himself of the fastest lap at the Jerez test day. Both he and teammate Vettel completed the maximum 100 laps each, with Kimi Raikkonen impressing to record the 3rd fastest lap, less than half a tenth slower than Vettel's best effort.

Sauber generally are strong in testing and today was no exception, with both Glock and Hulkenberg recording strong times. More surprising were Force India, with Adrian Sutil and test driver James Rossiter putting in stellar laps to beat the Ferraris, McLarens and Mercedes. McLaren were consistent but their lack of pace will be somewhat worrying, and they'll be hoping to be back near the top at Catalunya. Jules Bianchi had a great first day at the office for Ferrari, outpacing his experienced teammate Alonso, but the Scuderia were also further down on pace than they would have liked. Mercedes had a mediocre day, with Paul di Resta driving quite well but Hamilton never really hooking up with the car and then he hit the wall late on to cut his running short. Williams will be surprised to be so far behind their usual rivals Sauber and Force India, but at least were in front of Toro Rosso, who experimented with Ricciardo and Vergne in each other's cars at different stages throughout the day. Caterham look to be quicker than the new teams, but the gap may not be as pronounced as it was with Marussia and Scorpion in 2013. Russian Time had a mixed day, with Jolyon Palmer's car having a suspension failure after 80 laps meaning Daniil Kvyat missed out on any testing, but Kevin Magnussen also posted the best time of the new teams with a 1:20.059. Carlin are not far behind, with Petrov's best effort of 1:20.306.

Teams are now looking forward to seeing their performance at the Circuit de Catalunya, but many are staying to watch the NewGP2 test tomorrow and watch the talent of tomorrow hit the track for the first time in 2014.

Welcome to Jerez, where we'll welcome the 2014 NewF1 cars for the very first time! It's farewell to Marussia and Scorpion, and welcome to Russian Time and Carlin who make the step up from GP2. Champion Kamui Kobayashi will drive the #1 Red Bull RB10 for the first time today, with Vettel facing his first season not as defending champion since 2010. Plenty of test drivers will get their chance to shine today, with van der Garde, de la Rosa, Rigon, de Silvestro, Klien, Gutierrez, Perez, Calado, Rossiter, d'Ambrosio, Hartley, Kvyat and Marciello all scheduled to run at some stage today. Rookies Jolyon Palmer and Max Chilton will be keen to impress in their first full-time outings for Russian Time and Carlin respectively, and many eyes will be on the first female driver in several years as Simona de Silvestro takes to the track for Sauber in her first year as a reserve driver. The track looks quick, let's get down and get underway!

14:00 Green flag and the first official 2014 session is underway!

14:05 And it's Jules Bianchi who sets the first fastest lap with a 1:19.085 in his first outing for Ferrari. Sutil's Force India did a laptime less than a tenth slower.

14:06 Button and Rosberg both pushing hard early and making slight mistakes, but have got away with them.

14:07 Webber now has the quickest lap for McLaren as he sets a 1:18.607, with di Resta putting in a similar time for Mercedes. The Red Bulls seem to be out there on sighter laps at the moment so aren't lighting up the timesheets yet, but look very good on track.

14:09 Glock's just managed to run very wide and lost a few seconds - he seemed surprised by the car's reaction to the way he slung that into the corner, so despite not many technical difference between these cars and 2013 they're still behaving differently enough to keep him guessing.

14:10 Bianchi looks determined out there and has just put in a 1:18.547 to go quickest again - he's relishing the car he has this year!

14:13 Grosjean will be hoping for a year where he can match Raikkonen in 2014, and he's looking quick at the moment only a smidgeon off Bianchi's best time.

14:14 And now Webber shaves a bit off the best time to post a 1:18.497 - so far it's a straight shootout between Ferrari and McLaren with Lotus and Mercedes not far behind.

14:18 The Force Indias of Rosberg and Sutil, plus the Toro Rosso of Daniel Ricciardo are all in the pits getting ready to do driver swaps. Looks like it will soon be Calardo, Rossiter and d'Ambrosio on track. The best lap of those three that just came in was Rosberg with a 1:18.609.

14:20 So at 20 minutes down the order for best laps is as follows, Webber, Raikkonen, Bianchi, Grosjean, de Resta, Rosberg, Sutil, Hamilton, Glock, Ricciardo, Kobayashi, Vettel, Hulkenberg, Vergne, Kovalainen, Pic, Petrov, Alonso, Button, Magnussen, Palmer, Bottas, Chilton and Maldonado. Obviously drivers are on different fuel loads right now so that order isn't indicative of much.

14:21 Ooh and Raikkonen now goes fastest with a 1:18.489, just millimetres quicker than Webber!

14:22 Now Glock goes faster than Kimi with a 1:18.403! Will Sauber repeat their 2013 heroics in testing? Remember it was Vitaly Petrov then who confounded us all to go quickest, but this year he's racing for Carlin so it won't be him today for Sauber.

14:23 Sutil and Rosberg now return to the track, so looks like Rossiter and Calado will have to remain patient for Force India and the main drivers are going to have another run. Maldonado's had a spin! He's kept his boot on the throttle and doesn't stall, so continues on his way with only his pride damaged.

14:25 The Lotus drivers of Raikkonen and Grosjean now pit, with their best time so far being Raikkonen's 1:18.489.

14:27 So Red Bull still look like they are yet to really push their laptimes, with their men currently on long, high-fuel runs. Magnussen has just put in a 1:20.059, the fastest time of the new teams so far and only half a second slower than the best Caterham time - could Russian Time give Caterham a run for their money this year? The best Carlin time came from Petrov with a 1:20.355.

14:29 Oh and Glock improves his best time with a 1:18.220! I wonder if this is a one off or if Sauber really have the pace to consistently challenge for the front this year after their brilliant but inconsistent 2013?

14:30 And Giedo van der Garde now takes to the track for Lotus, he's driving the #6 so Grosjean will be sitting out for a while.

14:33 Most cars seem to be fueled for longer runs now, with only Hulkenberg under the 1:20 mark in recent laps.

14:38 Kimi Raikkonen returns to the track after a short spell back in the pits. He currently has the best average lap time of 1:19.003 but is starting a long run now so that is likely to change.

14:41 Toro Rosso were caught in no man's land at times in 2013, slower than the mid-field but much faster than Caterham, and early signs indicate not much has changed this year, with their best time of 1:19.038 half a second behind the rest of the pack but still half a second ahead of Kovalainen for Caterham.

14:43 A few drivers are pulling into pitroad now, with Maldonado, Bottas and Vergne all stopping. The best Williams time so far came from Maldonado with a 1:20.676 - that's well off the pace they'd like to be but I believe they have only had the one long run so far and are yet to do any short stints.

14:50 Gutierrez and Perez now emerge for Williams, so both test drivers getting a run at the same time. D'Ambrosio has also left the pits in Ricciardo's Toro Rosso, and it looks like Ricciardo has just left the pits in Vergne's car! Interesting approach from Toro Rosso today.

14:51 Hulkenberg's now posted a time just fractionally slower than the best of the day, with a 1:18.228, just 8 thousandths slower than Glock's best effort.

14:53 Perez is looking strong for Williams, his first timed lap of 1:19.292 is the best Williams time so far.

14:57 Red Bull seem to have fuelled Vettel for a short run now, he's posting some quick sectors but hasn't put together a properly quick lap yet.

14:58 d'Ambrosio and Ricciardo are back in the pits already after just 5 timed laps, and Bianchi also stops after 41 laps - looks like de la Rosa may be taking over. His best time so far was a 1:18.547.

14:59 Vettel goes to the top of the timesheets! He's just done a 1:18.139 which is the best time so far today, and Red Bull clearly have a very fast car here as that was only his 3rd timed lap on this short run.

15:01 And now it's Kobayashi putting in quick laps, as he also manages a 1:18.1 but slightly slower than Vettel's effort.

15:05 De la Rosa now emerges from the pitlane in Bianchi's Ferrari, as do Ricciardo and Vergne for Toro Rosso. Sutil and Rosberg have stopped for Force India, so we may now see the testers shortly.

15:07 And Hulkenberg now dips into the 1:18.1s, with a 1:18.199! He's still half a tenth off the best Red Bull time, but that's very encouraging from Sauber.

15:10 So the order of team pace as we near the halfway point is: Red Bull (Vettel), Sauber (Hulkenberg), Force India (Sutil), Lotus (Raikkonen), McLaren (Button), Ferrari (Bianchi), Mercedes (di Resta), Toro Rosso (Ricciardo), Caterham (Kovalainen), Russian Time (Magnussen) and Carlin (Petrov).

15:11 van der Garde has just brought the Lotus back into the pits after 30 laps of running, with his best time less than a tenth slower than Raikkonen's.

15:13 Calado and Rossiter have now taken over at Force India, setting their first timed laps.

15:14 Kobayashi hits the 17s! He puts an incredible time down of 1:17.964! That's going to be tough for anyone to beat and may well be the only time in the 17s that we see today.

15:15 Kobayashi now takes a trip through the gravel as he tries to beat his time - just pushing a bit too hard on that occasion.

15:18 Grosjean returns to the track and it looks like he'll be doing some short runs now.

15:22 Vergne has just done well to post the first 1:18 time for Toro Rosso with a 1:18.936.

15:23 Oh and Raikkonen has really wrung the neck of his Lotus to produce a 1:18.171 - that's nearly 3 tenths quicker than teammate Grosjean has managed today and only 2 tenths off Kobayashi's best time. Nico Hulkenberg has just finished a 60 lap stint and seems to be done for today, with Christian Klien getting ready to take over the #10.

15:31 Klien emerges from the pitlane in the Sauber - can he produce a stunner time like Hulkenberg did? Max Chilton also seems to be done for today in the Carlin with a best time so far of 1:20.387, less than a tenth slower than teammate Petrov and about 3 tenths slower than the best Russian Time lap.

15:33 de la Rosa now appears to be finished for the day in the Ferrari, with Davide Rigon preparing to take it for a run. Rigon will also be testing for NewGP2 team Trident tomorrow so will be grateful for some laps today to get to know the track conditions.

15:37 Raffaele Marciello is gearing up for his first F1 test as he leaves the pitlane for Carlin, and Rigon has also hit the track for Ferrari.

15:38 Perez spins his Williams! That's the second Williams to spin today after Maldonado looped it earlier today. He's managed to not stall and will continue his run, but perhaps the Williams have an oversteer issue.

15:43 With just over half an hour to go the follow drivers are leading the way for their teams today. The best Red Bull time, and the best time overall was Kobayashi with a 1:17.964. It's incredibly exactly even at McLaren, with Button and Webber both on a 1:18.497. The best Lotus time was Raikkonen with a 1:18.171. Bianchi is leading the way at Ferrari with a 1:18.547. Hulkenberg still has the best Sauber time with 1:18.199. Di Resta has embarrassed Hamilton a bit today with a best time of 1:18.588, 2 tenths up on Lewis's best. Test driver Sergio Perez is leading the way at Williams with a 1:18.892. Adrian Sutil is quickest at Force India with a 1:18.284. Vergne's the only driver to hit the 18s with a 1:18.936 at Toro Rosso. Kovalainen's just edged Pic with a 1:19.410 at Caterham. Magnussen is quickest at Russian Time with a 1:20.059 and Petrov's still the fastest at Carlin with 1:20.355.

15:46 Hamilton's hit the wall! He's broken his front wing and seems to have done some chassis damage - Mercedes are unlikely to get that car prepared in time to get him back out and his day is likely over.

15:50 Now Rigon's managed to damage his Ferrari's front wing, but he should be able to continue on until the end of his stint when they replace his wing. Gutierrez and Perez have just pitted and seem to be finished for the day for Williams, with Maldonado and Bottas soon to return to the track.

15:51 Rigon now retuns to the pits and Bianchi is preparing for a final stint. They'll need to replace that front wing first. Oh and Palmer seems to have a problem! He's reporting a suspension issue that looks terminal, and that means that Kvyat who was getting ready for a late stint will not get any laps today!

15:58 Alonso now ends his stint and Marc Gene is getting ready to take his car out.

16:01 Not much time left now, and most teams are getting ready for late low-fuel runs. Can anyone beat Kobayashi's best time?

16:02 Bottas has just posted the best Williams time with a 1:18.706.

16:05 Simona de Silvestro is on track, the first female test driver for quite a while

16:14 Nice job from Giedo van der Garde, he's just beaten Grosjean's best time in the same car with a 1:18.359. Meanwhile de Silvestro has just hit the wall but managed to hit it side on and did no obvious damage to the Sauber.

16:20 And that's it, no one has been able to beat the time set by Kobayashi who takes first blood for the 2014 season as he aims to defend his title.

Please now post your plans for Catalunya. You have a bit of time to do this as I now will run the NewGP2 test, but if I don't get anything back I will run the same test strategy as the Jerez test.

Di Resta delights for Mercedes as top teams falter
Paul di Resta had a tough 2013 and when he lost his seat at Force India it was thought his F1 career was over, but when Mercedes came knocking the Scot didn't blink and signed for the team. He's already started to repay them, incredibly outpacing teammate Hamilton and recording the best time of the day at Catalunya. It was a day of surprises, with the big 4 of Red Bull, McLaren, Lotus and Ferrari dropping down the order in favour of Mercedes and Force India, however the top teams may have been focussing on development rather than outright pace today and first true indication of form will be the qualifying session in Australia.

Mercedes will be extremely impressed with di Resta, with Hamilton at a loss to match his time and sounding exasperated on the team radio. Force India too were extremely quick, with the man who replaced di Resta, Nico Rosberg recording the second best time of the day and tester James Calado also putting in a brilliant time. Ferrari were not completely out of it but look like they will be a consistent performer this year, perhaps there to pick up the pieces when it goes wrong for other teams. Bianchi once again impressed, beating Alonso by a thousandth of a second. While Lotus were 7 tenths of a second slower than the best time, they had plenty of running and van der Garde also put in a solid 35 lap run, proving they have options if they lose one of their drivers midseason.

Red Bull slid alarmingly down the order, but the defending champions were probably not out there to set the timesheet on fire today and will have instead been consolidating their chassis, setup and engine. Williams were once again in the middle of the field, with Bottas the quickest. That was despite Valtteri only getting 15 laps of running before swapping for Perez, only for Perez's run to last just 2 laps before a gearbox failure prematurely ended the day for the #15. McLaren also dropped down the teamsheets in a worrying manner, and both Button and Webber seemed unable to come to grips with the car. Sauber were strong in Jerez but the Catalunya track didn't seem to suit them, with the best time from Hulkenberg over a second slower than di Resta's best. Toro Rosso on the other hand look to be pushing towards the rest of the midfield teams, although will have an eye over their shoulder with Caterham looking ever threatening. Carlin had a very tough day, and despite outpacing Russian Time across the two cars the team only managed 77 laps of running, with Chilton's car suffering an engine failure and Petrov stalling his car after spinning. Chilton's car failure meant that Marciello missed out on any running today. Russian Time were off the pace of the Carlins but will have plenty of data to take back home, completing 180 laps today.

Teams are now gearing up for their last minute upgrades before we fly down under and get the season underway!

We're back for the second and final day of pre-season testing for the 2014 NewF1 season! This time coming to you live from the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain during a glorious day. Can Red Bull retain their advantage and follow up their Jerez dominance, or will we see a new challenger? What can new teams Russian Time and Carlin do this time out? Let's find out!

14:00 The lights are green at the end of the pitlane and the teams are making their way out to the track! Looks like once again it's the lead drivers who are on track first with the test drivers waiting patiently for their turn later.

14:05 And it's Paul di Resta who sets the early pace with a 1:25.663 for Mercedes! The only other drivers in the 1:25s at this stage are Webber, Grosjean, Bianchi and Bottas, but many seem fueled for long runs.

14:06 Rosberg immediately beats di Resta's time in his new team of Force India, becoming the first driver to drop into the 24s with a 1:24.947.

14:07 The laptimes are tumbling already, with Jules Bianchi now fastest with 1:24.617.

14:09 Only for di Resta to go quickest again with 1:24.302! That's a fast time and only one tenth slower than the 2013 Catalunya best testing time.

14:10 Now di Resta goes faster again with a 1:24.086 - that's starting to approach the 2013 pole time now, so Mercedes clearly looking like they have a good car here today after an unimpressive Jerez. Force India's Nico Rosberg is also quick with a 1:24.180.

14:19 Laptimes are not tumbling the way they did early this hour, with most drivers now on longer runs. The only drivers who have posted times in the 1:24s are Raikkonen, Bianchi, di Resta, Bottas, Sutil and Rosberg.

14:22 Problem for Max Chilton and Carlin! The team have asked him to stop the car as they have some kind of electrical issue! That could sideline the car for hours, disaster for Carlin. That may also mean Marciello misses out as he was scheduled to run the #25 later today. Time will tell if the team can get the car fixed before the end of the session.

14:25 Grosjean has already brought his car into the pits and it seems that van der Garde is getting ready to go out. Bottas also stops his Williams for Perez to have a go.

14:31 Maldonado just had a lucky escape as he ran through the gravel and nearly got stuck, but just managed to get out before he lost momentum...then Charles Pic does the same thing! Perhaps there's some oil on track?

14:34 Di Resta has now spun! He's currently on a longer fuel run and just got caught out with getting too greedy on the throttle. He's managed to get going and is back on his way now.

14:36 Trouble for Perez! Only on his 3rd lap of his current stint for Williams he's unable to select any gears and has had to stop on the side of the track! That car's in a difficult spot to reach as well, the team have no choice but to leave it there until the end of the test session and that means not only Perez but Bottas will get no more running today!

14:39 Hamilton now lapping in the 1:24s as he burns his fuel load down - could he beat his new teammate's time?

14:40 The Russian Time cars have been brought into the pits, presumably for driver changes. Magnussen has the best RT time so far of 1:27.415, but it's half a second behind Petrov's time for Carlin of 1:26.978.

14:43 As we approach 3/4 of an hour of running the current pecking order for drivers is as follows: di Resta, Rosberg, Sutil, Hamilton, Bianchi, Bottas, Raikkonen, Grosjean, Webber, Hulkenberg, Glock, Ricciardo, Vergne, Button, Vettel, Kobayashi, Kovalainen, Pic, Alonso, Petrov, Magnussen, Maldonado, Palmer, van der Garde, Chilton and Perez.

14:47 Kvyat and Hartley now emerge for Russian Time. This is Kvyat's first taste of the 2014 F1 cars after his running at Jerez was cancelled due to issues with one of the cars.

14:50 Alonso is now into the 1:24s as he pushes through a quali run.

14:54 d'Ambrosio and Gutierrez now emerge from the pits for Toro Rosso and Williams respectively.

14:58 Now it's Hulkenberg who spins! He won't be happy with that but has been able to continue on his way.

15:00 Red Bull seem to be getting ready for a low fuel run - will they blitz the time set by Mercedes?

15:01 Bianchi brings his Ferrari in as de la Rosa prepares to swap into it. Jules still has the best Ferarri time so far but only by 1 thousandth of a second!

15:04 Hamilton sets a 1:24.249, nearly 2 tenths slower than di Resta, and radios through to his team that he can't go any faster. How has Paul managed to outpace Lewis?

15:05 And Red Bull are into the 24s with a 1:24.953 set by Kobayashi, but their car doesn't look as stable as it did in Jerez and they don't seem to have as good a setup. Glock now spins his Sauber! Both Saubers have spun in under 10 minutes - does the team have some kind of issue?

15:08 de la Rosa does not have a good first timed lap - he hits a kerb too hard and damages the front wing, meaning he's had to come back into the pits to replace it. Bianchi looks less than impressed at the treatment his car has just received!

15:10 Sutil and Rosberg bring in their Force Indias and both Calado and Rossiter are getting ready to go out.

15:14 We are around the halfway point and it's time to check how the teams are faring - sorted by fastest lap time with the driver who set the time in brackets the list is as follows: Mercedes (di Resta), Force India (Rosberg), Ferrari (Bianchi), Williams (Bottas), Red Bull (Kobayashi), Lotus (Raikkonen), McLaren (Button), Sauber (Hulkenberg), Toro Rosso (Ricciardo), Caterham (Kovalainen), Carlin (Petrov) and Russian Time (Magnussen).

15:15 Caterham seem to have closed up the gap to Toro Rosso a little this season - they're only half a second per lap slower than Ricciardo's best time. Carlin are about 8 tenths slower than Caterham right now and Russian Time are about half a second slower than that.

15:18 Ouch, di Resta has just crashed and broken his front wing. He's been able to get it back to the pits but that's going to taint his day even if he sets the fastest lap time.

15:20 Calado is looking strong and has already set a 1:24.323 - not a bad time from the young tester.

15:27 And now it's Rossiter who puts in a good time of 1:24.273! Force India seem to have made big progress this pre-season, but only time will tell if they can translate that to in-season results.

15:29 Hulkenberg brings in the Sauber #10 and Klien is preparing to start a run.

15:35 Carlin confirm via Twitter that Chilton's car will not return to the track today - they haven't been able to isolate the electrical issue.

15:37 Petrov has spun and stalled his Carlin now! He's not going to be able to get that back to the pits on his own steam and that might be the end of the day for Carlin! So both Carlins have stopped early and they've missed out on vital running today - their next stop is Australia and we can only hope they're ready!

15:39 Incredibly Vettel is still yet to post a 1:24 time - Red Bull seem to be having a tough time getting their laptimes down to match the other teams, but so are McLaren whose best time so far is only a 1:25.210!

15:44 Rigon is now on track for Ferrari - he's had a busy preseason testing not only for Ferrari but also GP2 team Trident.

15:54 With just over 30 minutes of running di Resta's time of 1:24.086 is looking increasingly unlikely at being beaten - Rosberg is still the closest with a 1:24.180 but seems to be doing no more running for today as he's changed out of his overalls and is watching from the paddock.

16:06 Most teams are preparing for one final low fuel run - can anyone beat di Resta?

16:12 Gene and de Silvestro are now on track so all drivers will get at least one lap of running today except Marciello, who of course is sidelined due to Carlin's issues.

16:21 The track may well have started to slow up as the day cools - drivers are struggling to match their PBs at the moment.

16:30 And it's all over, and it's a surprising result here today as Paul di Resta takes the honours for Mercedes with Force India also looking strong. Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari and Lotus seem to be lagging behind but may have not been targeting outright pace today - we won't know the actual pecking order for the season until Q1 in Australia!

Stick around tomorrow for the NewGP2 test, the last pre-season session before the start of the year!

Upgrades:
Teams may now perform any upgrades prior to the first round as per the rules here: http://formularejects.com/wiki/Talk:201 ... ies_season
The joker card is available to any teams that wish to use it, but remember as it's only available once if you use it now you will not be able to use it for the rest of the season.

Any teams that don't post their intentions will have their upgrades delayed until later rounds, so they won't miss out completely just will be at a slight disadvantage in the early rounds.

This is also the time to make any last minute changes to your team line up in time for the Australian GP, if any are required.
