2014 Hungarian Grand Prix Thread

Post by good_Ralf »

Hamilton has to win here. I mean, he's outqualified his teammate at the Hungaroring every year with the exception of that infamous 2007 session. Lewis is as good at this track as say, Montreal but of course he was pipped by Rosberg when it counted there. I get the feeling he will dominate the weekend until the end of Q3 and then it will unravel from there, again.
As usual Formula 1's website is predicting a thunderstorm for Sunday
Plus Williams are bringing a major upgrade to a racetrack that shouldn't suit them. Could this be 2005 all over again?

Hamilton will buckle under pressure, self-destruct and take Rosberg with him as collateral damage, leaving the path clear for Valtteri Bottas to take his first Grand Prix victory

Hungary has a reputation for throwing up first time wins (Hill, Alonso, Button, Kovalainen) and unusual results (Boutsen's win and other good performances, Mansell winning from 12th on the grid, Bertrand Gachot getting a fastest lap, Hill's heroics in the Arrows, de la Rosa's only podium). Heck, we might even see Kamui get run over by the medical car!

Toto Wolff got caught up in a bicycle crash like Heidfeld in 2005, but he expects to travel to Budapest.

No Susie in FP1 any more.
Life feels meaningless..

According to absurdism, humans historically attempt to find meaning in their lives. Traditionally, this search results in one of two conclusions: either that life is meaningless, or life contains within it a purpose set forth by a higher power.
Susie was just that. She gave off that encouraging soothing vibe of a higher power, that everything was going to be alright. No obstacles in life seemed impossible when Susie was in the car, no problem or setback too great. And now it's all gone.
I'm sure you all feel the same way, so what can we do?
I have not mourned nearly as much as this since we lost Gaston Mazzacane in 2001.

What about when Yuji Ide lost his superlicence?

My interest in F1 began soon after Giovanna Amati lost her drive to a then-future World Champion. Maybe subconsciously, it was her plight that drew me to the sport? And if her replacement could win the title, what could she have done, given the same opportunities? Points? Podiums? The occasional win, perhaps?

Not as much. I never fully understood Yuji, and I'm not talking about the charming language barrier which was as vast as the coast line outside Sumoto. He yelled at his mechanics and just generally seemed like 'miss mistreated' when he wasn't trying to kill his opponents or being busy trying out a new sandtrap.
His shifting skills is something I will forever admire, though.

Gaston on the other hand, what a hero, he felt most comfortable being in his motorhome listening to The Rolling Stones. He did his own thing, he didn't speak much and he didn't care about his opponents (he was the original Kimi of the 00's). His routine was to put it 22nd on the grid, finish the race in last place and go home to La Plata or Faenza content with his performance, and rightly so (he was the original Chilton). He was also quoted in F1 Racing once saying how he dreamt of winning in F1.. with Minardi. How could you not love him to bits. If I had a choice of being someone else, I'd be Gaston Mazzacane.
Nothing seemed to faze Gaston. He was always cool, calm and collected even when he struck his mechanic in the Indy pits. It's a travesty his time at Prost was cut short. Oh, what could have been.

The world would be a lot better off if everyone were a little bit more like Gaston Mazzacane.
Well that's how I feel, anyway.

For me, it's the other way around. I will miss qualifying for the first time since Silverstone 2011, as my sister's wedding is on Saturday. Not that I watch every session each week; I often record the practice sessions and fast forward through them if they are shown early.

I agree with you, I think Bottas is in with a really good shout if Qualifying goes well for him. If Williams can keep it together then either him or, yes, Massa could have their best opportunity this year.

Gearbox fire for Chilton as he came into the pits from his installation lap. Plumes of smoke and then a bit of fire at the end. He's out of the session.

I reckon Lotus must have given up with this year's car now that they have the Merc engine deal for 2015. A shame really, the car definitely has potential, but it's riddled with reliability issues. :|

EDIT: And of course, just after I post this, The Reverend puts the car into 13th. He's been on it for the last few races.

And Sutil's just spun it again.

Don't disdain, CoopsII! Everyone one knows that Kimi's only issue as a racing driver is maintaining his interest. You see, he could be one of the best out there if not the best but he is always thwarted by a lack of interest and desire to get beaten by his team-mates.

I never disdain. Disdain, datdain, its all the same to me. "For Sure"TM as long as he's interested he'll knock it out of the park but it's a long time until race day and who knows what'll distract him between now and then. Brake issues, downforce problems, someone bouncing a Slinky in front of his face, who knows?

An update for weather.

Local forecasts say Saturday will be sun dry with no rain, however Sunday will have an about 40 percentage of rain. Remember the first V8 race here? It was wet in the beginning... ;) We might get a shock winner here again, somehow our circuit throws them up.
I seriously hope Bottas can plonk the car up to the first two rows somewhere.

No, I get that he's not going to be everyone's cup of tea (I probably should have made that clear in my post, but hey), but don't you think telling him to go away just because of difference in what we find funny is a bit much?

The Williams FW36 lacks downforce, so on tracks where df is paramount to success e.g. Monaco and Hungary, the car sucks, much like it did in Monte Carlo earlier this year. Tracks with low downforce set-ups and high straight line speed work with the Williams, so Spa and Monza could well be field days for them. Williams not being best of the rest again today wasn't much of a surprise to me TBH. Also Hamilton beats Rosberg in both FP sessions.

(shrug) nowadays sure, but when the internet just started the trolls were the ones who violently denied trolling, instead "truly believing" in X/Y/Z and repeating the same three or four "facts" to back themselves up. Que other trolls (usually the same guy with many accounts) backing him up.

Being a troll as a badge of honor is something new. And is rather interesting honestly.
