Post-1960 F1 drivers scoring Top 6 results in the Indy 500

Post by Yannick »

Should post-1960 F1 drivers be able to unrejectify themselves through scoring the necessary positions with a Top-6 result in the Indy 500?

As is common knowledge around these parts, the Indianapolis 500 Mile International Sweepstakes counted towards the F1 World Championship from 1950 to 1960. Thus, drivers scoring enough eligible positions in those events have unrejectified themselves. From 1961 onwards, the F1 World Championship has continued until today without awarding points for the Indy 500.
However, the Indy 500 has also been run annually since then, as a separate entity.

Since traditionally, the Indy 500 has a history as a Grand Prix, I feel it would be interesting if any F1 drivers exist who would lose their eligibility to be profiled on Jamie & Enoch's website by their Indy 500 results from 1961 until today. I'm sorry but CART's US 500 does not count ;-)

For example, Danny Sullivan would have unrejectified himself in spectacular fashion by winning the Indy 500 in 1985 for Penske
Roberto Guerrero would have unrejectified himself with a 2nd place in the 1984 Indy 500 for Bignotti-Cotter.
And Eliseo Salazar would have unrejectified himself with a 4th place in the 1995 Indy 500 for Dick Simon.
Most formidably, Fabrizio Barbazza would have made himself ineligible for being profiled on this site even before entering F1 by scoring 3rd in the 1987 Indy 500 for Arciero.
DJ Raul Boesel would also lose his profile after having scored a 3rd place at the 1989 Indy 500 for Shierson.

Who else?

It is also interesting to note who came close: Toranosuke Takagi scored a 5th for Mo Nunn in the 2003 Indy 500. He just needed another 6th place and what did he get a year later? 19th and one lap down.

Bobby Unser would have unrejectified himself several months after making his only F1 start for BRM by finishing 3rd in the 1969 race.
Danny Ongais was 4th in 1979.
'70s Aussie reject Vern Schuppan would have escaped reject status when he finished 3rd in 1981 and in the same race Kevin Cogan was 4th.

It's also worth pointing out that Justin Wilson would have taken the first step towards unrejectification when he finished 5th last year.

Would be interesting to see which F1 drivers were rejects in other series, e.g. Tiago Monteiro is a Champ Car reject but not an F1 reject.

JJ Lehto is also a Champ Car (or CART as it was known when he drove) reject. He had one full season and had a best result of fifth. His second best result was eighth.

Pedro Diniz is pretty close to F3000 reject, one fourth place was his only top-six finish.

DC is a DTM reject.

That's nothing compared to the legend of Yoong, reject in F1, F3000, Cart and F. Nippon! He redeemed himself a little bit in A1, though.
