After a season riddled with controversy and intra-team battles Lewis Hamilton was able to repeat Jacques Villeneuve's feat of winning the championship in his rookie season by just 1 point from the reigning double World Champion Fernando Alonso. Williams bounced back from their 2006 low to finish 3rd in the Constructors' Championship, their highest placing since 2003. Super Aguri also showed improvement as they repeated Toro Rosso's feat of beating their parent team, finishing 2 points ahead of Honda in 5th place, with Sato in the top ten.

I'm sorry james1978 but Heidfeld did not win this one, in spite of his perfect finishing record. The BMW was a clear third best and therefore not consistently on the podium like the Ferraris and McLarens. The reliability record this year was also just too good throughout most of the field, with Hamilton only retiring once all season and Massa getting two DNFs. Anyway, Hamilton did not successfully defend his title as even his famous move on Glock at the final corner of the season would not help him. In fact, all possibilities of him winning the championship involved Massa not winning his home race. Elsewhere in the field Williams were rewarded with 4th place for a consistent season with both drivers in the top ten of the Drivers' Championship (yes, Kazuki's in the top ten ), rising star Vettel was beaten by his Champ Car-winning team-mate and Toro Rosso were 9th despite winning a race.

This year we have a three-way showdown for the title at the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, with Button leading Barrichello by 3.5 points and Webber by 6.5. In the end though, history ran its actual course and Button won. The Vettel-Webber pairing at Red Bull began with the Australian beating his younger team-mate by 1 point in the final standings. Giancarlo Fisichella had a very impressive swansong, finishing 1 point clear of Hamilton in 6th place. McLaren had a disastrous start to the season, languishing in last place for the first few races, but eventually improved to finish 7th.

Going into Abu Dhabi Alonso had a decent 5-point lead over Webber meaning all he had to do was make it to lap 14 to be guaranteed the championship. It was an easy task, given the reliability of the Ferrari package and Fernando became a triple World Champion. Red Bull's "no team orders" policy suddenly looked stupid, although they did take the Constructors' Championship. Alguersuari was in the top ten in his first full season and Sauber, in their first season as an independent team again, suffered with an unreliable car ensuring that they finished last in the Constructors' Championship.

Caterham also repeated their 2011 success in 6th with Kovalainen 9th. Ironically, Williams had their worst season since 2006, mostly because of Maldonado's antics.

After a mostly close-fought season between Hamilton and Rosberg, the British driver claimed his first title since his rookie season 7 years ago, the longest gap between titles in F1 history. Elsewhere, Massa has moved up to 8th with the same number of points as Vettel and Räikkönen, Kvyat's retirement dropped him behind the two Mexican drivers, Sutil got ahead of Maldonado and Kobayashi finished ahead of his absent former teammate Marcus Ericsson and has equal points with the injured Jules Bianchi. In the Constructors' Championship Williams' double podium put them ahead of McLaren and within one point of Red Bull's runner-up spot, Force India got back ahead of Toro Rosso thanks to Kvyat's retirement and simply by showing up and completing more than half the race Caterham have taken the all-important 10th place in the Constructors' Championship at the expense of Marussia.

Like Malaysia, it was Ferrari vs. Mercedes, but this time the Silver Arrows reigned supreme. Hamilton now has half the points of his nearest rival. Vettel had damage to his front wing and had to pit for a replacement. This meant throwing away an assured podium place and 2nd in the championship is now in Rosberg's hands. Toro Rosso had a terrible race, with two retirements in the third quarter giving them ten points, leaving them tied with Sauber and Force India in the Constructors' Championship. Sauber are now third on countback. Alonso performed well in the race but Button was unable to take the start, giving him the maximum eight points, leaving McLaren just one point ahead of Manor.

It looked an easy win for Hamilton before a misjudgement by Verstappen in an overtaking attempt on Grosjean saw the Dutch teenager in the barriers at Sainte Devote, bringing out the safety car. Mercedes called Hamilton in for a pitstop that probably should not have been made, dropping the championship leader behind Vettel. Rosberg took a win that had never seemed likely before, which put him just two points behind Hamilton in the championship.

Hamilton has bounced back from Monaco to lead Rosberg in yet another Mercedes 1-2. This time they were joined on the podium not by a Ferrari driver but by Valtteri Bottas of Williams, who is now just outside the top ten in the championship. A surprise for Mercedes as they were beaten off the line by both Williams cars. A few poor strategy calls and rain showers later and the podium looked much the same as most other races this year with a Mercedes 1-2 and Vettel taking 3rd. Williams have to settle for another 8 points. However, there were a lot of early retirements, which shuffle some of the minor placings in the championship. Force India are now 4th while Red Bull have finally gotten ahead of Toro Rosso and Manor continue to slowly make their way up the table as Lotus' early double retirement has allowed the red, white and blue cars to move up to 8th.

Mercedes were once again out-dragged at the start, this time by Ferrari. Unlike Williams at Silverstone, the red cars held on. Raikkonen suffered problems with his energy recovery system but Vettel took the chequered flag in an incident-packed race. Neither Mercedes finished on the podium and so they took their biggest points haul of the season at 8 points, which is a normal day at the office for most of the grid. Red Bull took a double podium on a track which suited them better than most others, even if a little bit of luck was involved in their final result. However, they are now 5th in the Constructors' Championship ahead of Sauber and they are breathing down the neck of Force India in 4th, who scored 9 points today as a result of Hulkenberg's front wing failure coming before 75% distance, after which point all of the other retirements occurred. As a result of this, the German slips to 12th in the standings.

Singapore shook up the order as Ferrari and Red Bull were quicker than the nigh-unstoppable Mercedes. Hamilton ran into reliability issues for the first time this year, his retirement allowing Rosberg to close the points gap by one point. Vettel also made inroads into Rosberg's second place, the gap between the Germans now at four points. Manor's decision to replace Merhi saw him lose 12th place in the championship.

Rosberg's hopes of winning the title have been reduced to virtually nought as an early retirement has turned the gap between him and Hamilton to 13 points, meaning the reigning World Champion has a good chance of wrapping up this year's title with one race to spare. Mixed fortunes for Force India as the Hulk crashed on the first lap while Pérez took an unexpected podium, which moved the consistent Mexican up to 4th in the Drivers' Championship. Lewis Hamilton claimed his third world title as soon as the lights went out in Interlagos, but once again his teammate Nico Rosberg took victory, giving the German the runner-up spot for the second year running, as even if he missed Abu Dhabi and Vettel won Rosberg would have got the position. With Vettel also secure in third place this means all eyes are on the eight-way battle for fourth in the championship. Can Pérez hold on? Meanwhile, Sainz's first lap retirement has handed fifth in the Constructors' Championship to Sauber, the Swiss team enjoying their best season since the BMW years, but Sauber's advantage is just one point, with Force India another point further back. After a tyre infringement Felipe Massa was disqualified, which drops him out of the top ten, while Williams are now under threat from Sauber, Toro Rosso and Force India.

Another season in the record books. The title contest was not as close as it was last year with Hamilton leading from the get-go in Australia on the way to his third world title. Still, there were some interesting performances. Sergio Pérez had a very consistent season and finished fourth ahead of several drivers with superior machinery. The same can also be said of Felipe Nasr, who finished seventh. Max Verstappen had a much more impressive rookie season than some might have predicted, the 18-year-old ending the year in tenth.

As for the Constructors' Championship, Sauber had their best season since the BMW era in fifth, having spent much of the previous five seasons trying not to finish last. A great comeback for Marussia as they managed eighth despite not having had any winter testing and being unable to get the cars running in Melbourne. The same cannot be said of the two teams they beat; McLaren's switch to the new Honda power units has cost them very dearly in terms of performance and reliability, and they have plummeted from fourth in 2014 to ninth this year - their worst season since the beginning of their partnership with Mercedes in 1995. The other team, Lotus, have suffered from a combination of reliability issues, driver error and sometimes just plain bad luck. They finish tenth and last, which in the long history of the Enstone team is their worst since 1985, and even then they finished ahead of other teams.
