Re: F1 1984+
Round 5 - French Grand Prix, Dijon, 20th May 1984
Qualifying Results:
Lacking upgrades for the third consecutive Grand Prix, neither Brabham could set pole around Dijon. Cheever was full of energy, and eager to take the fight to the top teams; one wonders if he genuinely thinks he has a shot at the championship. The Williams team's constant development had moved their performances from 'slow' to 'erratic' - an improvement, nonetheless. Both Osellas put in solid performances; with each race they look more and more like a midfield team, rather than the backmarkers they've traditionally been cast-off as. In twenty-first place on the grid, Lauda seems to be taking a bath, once again, in his iffy-handling Renault. Chico Serra surprisingly out-qualified team-mate Winkelhock. Embarrassment for once-champion Alan Jones, who failed to qualify his underpowered Toleman, amid concerns about the Australian's fitness.

Race Results:
A great charge through the field saw Piquet spray champagne on the French crowd; he and Tambay swarmed Arnoux, who eventually made a mistake at the Parabolique and cracked under pressure. Patrese spent all afternoon with a gearbox that gradually fell apart; he revealed after the race, that he had spent the end of it with only fourth and fifth gear remaining. Brazilian new-boy Senna picked-up his first point. De Angelis, behind, simply lacked the pace to pass the Williams. Although he had been directly behind Senna toward the end of the race, he dropped back by several seconds on the last lap. A four-car group, headed by Nannini's Arrows and trailed by Ghinzani's Osella, squabbled over eighth place for the last fifteen-or-so laps, putting on a show of overtaking that delighted spectators, and flat-spotted some Pirellis. Cheever had stalled on the line and trailed everyone else, making dicey manoeuvres to slice through the pack, nearly being taken-off several times - Serra and Ghinzani proving especially dangerous to overtake. In the end, Cheever was destined not to finish, and in ironic fashion, he spun-off and stalled while veering away from team-mate Warwick, who lost the back-end of his Tyrrell in front of him.

Alfa halt engine development
After reviewing a difficult financial outlook for the next year, and citing the already-competitive state of their cars, Alfa Romeo Automobiles S.p.A. have formally announced the temporary pausation of their V8 turbo engine development programme.
The move was not without controversy, as an insider revealed that the decision - decided by the thirty members of senior management and board members - only passed with a 19:11 vote.
Alfa have not given a specific date for when development will resume, but IRI president Romano Prodi assured Italian press on Thursday, that funds would be given to resume development of the company's works Formula One engine "well before the end of the year."
The opportunity to perform development of the 890T engine is temporarily unavailable, and the engine's listing - within the 'Engine Development' section beneath the calendar, at the start of the thread - has been greyed-out, to represent this.

We're still not getting any closer to the points, so one D&T on Downforce and the other on the '85 car- this year's already looking like a bit of a write-off.

Apologies, but I'm going to have to give Brabham up here, I've not been giving this my full attention so it's not really fair on the rest. Thanks for all your great efforts, this is a very well run series.

And yet you are second in the championship.
Perhaps I should be taking a more hands-off approach!

There are two people in the queue with priority to take-over Brabham at the moment, so if anyone is passing-by and wants to jump-in, I'm afraid you can't do that, right now. Anyone who wants to join the series, though, is welcome to state their interest and be added to the waiting list

Re: F1 1984+
Round 6 - Monaco Grand Prix, Monaco, 3rd June 1984
Qualifying Results:
Piquet set an incredible time, which even his team-mate, Arnoux, had no hope of matching. Martini in the Alfa wowed everyone with his precise, speedy driving. A fantastic seventh-place on the grid by Bellof in the unwieldy Williams. Brundle just managed to out-qualify team-mate Mansell, the Lotus' starting thirteenth and fourteenth. By far the best performance all-season from the Toleman team, their cars qualifying 12th and 19th; the skill of their drivers, and the inherent qualities of the TG184 chassis overcame the horsepower deficit they suffered with the DFVs. Baldi got one of the Osellas through, and Rosberg did the same with his over-powered Arrows. The smaller grid in Monte Carlo saw ten cars fail to qualify, including double-DNQs for the Arrows and ATS teams, both of whom could do little with their turbo BMW engines. The RAM team, while failing to qualify, did not finish last in the timesheet for once, and so are guaranteed a modicum of TV money, soon.

Race Results:
Unbelievable! An unbelievable penultimate-lap pass by Arnoux at La Rascasse, in which the Frenchman, for the first time, made obvious his desire to take the psychological fight to Piquet! Martini kept out of the wall, progressively driving slower-and-slower as he got closer-and-closer to the end of the race; Mansell eventually got past him in the last few laps, after a spectacular charge for the Englishman, that was helped by gaining six places in the first lap chaos. Disappointment for Ferrari, with de Angelis just outside the points, and Prost being taken out in the first corner by Warwick, who also hit Alan Jones. The Toleman team must surely be disappointed with the race, this track having likely been their best chance at scoring points all-season. Poor performance by the Renault drivers, who are no doubt eager to move-on to a circuit that better suits their car, assuming it exists.

Re: F1 1984+
Wait a second, Rosberg disappeared in the race, even though he qualified (last). Do you have any idea where he finished (or whether he even started) so we can at least know what went wrong. (sorry if this sounds angry- it really isn't)
Anyway, Arrows will spend our money on Drag reduction and next years' car (which will hopefully look interesting enough for the timekeepers to keep track of!

We did have a problem with the electronic computer system during qualifying and had to make a couple of changes to the qualifying results with the quill pen and parchment.
...
I've realised what's happened:
We published two different qualifying results, accidently. 'v1' is the version before we edited it (with Serra qualifying), and 'v2' is the version we edited by hand (with Rosberg qualifying).
We circulated the original 'v1' version during the weekend to the paddock, and used it as the entry list for the race on Sunday, hence the lack of protestation by teams.
We published our corrected 'v2' version with the media, after the race.
Rosberg should have been in the race, and Serra shouldn't have been.
This is a complete calamity on our part. I don't know how we are going to get out of this without facing legal action by the Arrows team, and being soundly ridiculed...

Conflict Resolution (Serraberggate)
In the interests of clearing this issue, involving the Arrows team, up as quickly as possible, we have initiated the following action:
The FIA will…
Calculate the average finishing position of Keke Rosberg's Arrows-BMW entry, from the second 'quad grouping' of races which determine the allocation of the second payment of FOCA TV money.
In this case, however, there has only been one race, which resulted in a seventeenth-place retirement, and is therefore not considered a representative result of the entry's performance.
Therefore, an average finishing position of the entry from this – and the previous – 'quad grouping' of races will be calculated.
This is: 13.4.
You will be reimbursed compensation at twice the rate of this position's prize money. This money will be deducted from the second set of prize money to be paid to teams after race eight.
The amount the Arrows team will be refunded is: £272,000.
The FIA and Olivetti would like to apologise for this mix-up.
