It's not a problem (or a secret), unless you use proxies to watch child porn or something but these services are not even anonymous. Basically it makes the internet think you're from UK (or other coutnries) I don't see anything wrong with that.

Download the prog and make a free account, after that run the program and set it to use the British server (use the wizard, or instructions from the site).

After that in your browser set the proxy to localhost, port: 1080
That's it you're browsing the internet via a british proxy with speed of 64kbit/s (you can pay for greater speeds if you like), HOWEVER even though 64 kbit/s is nowhere enough to stream video, while watching videos from BBC it will for some reason use your full bandwidth so when you start the video you can comfortably turn off the proxy and still be able to watch/rewind etc. the video. Just make sure you have the proxy turned on while accessing videos.

No risks involved.

Thanks ;)

I would argue that it is illegal because he is accessing information (in this case archive F1 footage) by fraudulently claiming to be from the UK. I don't see you being caught doing it though so the risk is pretty low if you're willing to take it.

I should ask what happens if you get caught...

But can that really be illegal then? People may be using a proxy for any number of reasons (for example to bypass net-censorship, or, in fact by being from some remote regions in Sweden that for some strange reason use british IP-adresses) and just chance by these BBC videos without being even aware that only their usage of a proxy enables them to watch the content.
So at the very least wouldn't the BBC have to inform you that you have to be from the UK to legally watch the videos?

It is infringing on F1's copyrights/trademarks.

And all Bernie can do about it is ban you from YouTube. Which he did to me once.
And then the BBC banned me again, but thats a whole other story.

The BBC does warn people that certain content works only in the UK. That's why there's a "UK version" and "international version" of the website. However, individual videos only tell you the necessary information if they don't play.

The BBC would have to prove that you knew you weren't entitled to watch the video (difficult but theoretically possible) and then you'd have:

- a large fine and/or prison sentence, possibly measuring in years, for any of the following: fraud, copyright infringement or the Computer Misuse Act.
- an additional £1000 fine for having no TV licence (if you were watching live content; other videos, including complete reruns on iPlayer, don't need a TV licence)

BBC does that to prevent from THEM being sued.

You're mixing broadcasters and viewers, it is extremely and I mean EXTREEEEMELY doubtful anyone would sue you for accessing content that your country's broadcasters haven't bought rights for, however if someone would broadcast and allow people from places that rights haven't been payed for to see the content (e.g. uploading a YT video, justin.tv and alike streaming) then you might have a problem, even though you'll most likely get a reuqest to remove the video, or something similar. So it's broadcasters that have problems not the viewers.

Because by your logic someone could basically sue me if I visited UK and watched BBC in a friends house or something cause I am still breaking copyright laws. ;)

Its a complicated process to avoid having trash like "have you had an accident???..." or "do you have any unwanted gold/mobiles/vital organs???....." or "HIIIIIIIII IM BARRY SCOTT!!!....." or "GO COMPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARE...." (if i was in that advert i would seriously consider stabbing that man in the lungs).

I'd seriously pay £145 a year to avoid adverts for the rest of my life. But it does sound like a televisual protection racket, dont pay the money for it and we'll force you to pay more.

On the subject of the red button feed, they seem to be taking their time, 2 days to practice and no sign of it, possibly still editing as we speak.

If I remember from last year... the classic F1 clips were only up the last Thursday night before Oz, a few hours before I was up again for Free Practice 1...

here is the first one on the list

I find it very odd that "Ya kno wha' I meen 'Arry" Carpenter is doing the highlight narration, and even more wierd that David "Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeextraordinary" Coleman is in the Kravitz position in the pits talking to the drivers after the race.

What on earth could Murray have possibly been doing that was more important?

My memory does not serve me well, why did they not include the 1999 Australian GP, that was an utterly bonkers season opener.
Or am I expecting that only for the Aus GP pre-race history loop? Wheras all these season openers are all from venues that F1 does not go to anymore?

I was watching the BBC classic races last night and was somewhat startled to hear a phrase that I thought was a modern F1 affliction and even more startled by who actually said it.

Yep, the first recorded instance that I've seen of an F1 driver uttering "for sure" was in Brazil 1984 and it was said by none other than Martin Brundle!

I must point out that he did actually use the phrase correctly and in context unlike most drivers now but still, I'm sure I've heard him commenting on the obsession of the drivers with the phrase.

Thats a interesting fact for sure. Maybe we can find out who started saying "it will be difficult" and "big braking" too.

And watching the 1982 clip, while Slim Borgudd was doing a three-point turn, I'm sure I heard Murray exclaim that "I have never seen this before!"

I think he did yes!

Amazing how many of these things were actually in place before we realised!

Huzzah for the 1990 Phoenix short review! Jean Alesi vs Senna, a Minardi on the front row for the race! And Eurobrun got a whole 30 seconds of airtime when Roberto Moreno was being lapped! Truely a great race :D

I just wondered if anyone knows whether you are able to watch the F1 friday pratice sessions (which are usually shown on the red button) on the BBC iplayer or not?

Thanks in advance

Thanks for that.

& I know they show a short highlights of each session afterwards.

However I need to know if they show the FULL F1 practice sessions (both friday & sat mornings) on either on the iplayer or http://www.bbc.co.uk/f1 once the session has finished (i.e. NOT live) or BBC iplayer.

Bascially I only watch telly these days for the F1 pratice sessions & nothing else. So I don't see the point in renewing the £145 license fee if I can watch F1 legally on the internet for free... although I know you are not allowed to watch it "live" without a TV license.

That's why I ask, to see if I can save paying a license fee, instead I would like to spend in on getting a better internet connection or download rfactor?

On the Friday of Bahrain, 1st practice session could be watched again at bbc.co.uk/f1 from an hour after the end of the session, which meant it overlapped with the start of FP2, but for your purposes, this wouldn't matter. Didn't notice how long it remained available for though...
