So, judging by the fact that Bridgestone suggests that Sauber look to be the best at preserving their tyres, I wouldn't be surprised to see Sauber doing reasonably well in race trim. At the very least, the suggestion by Bridgestone that Sauber could get away with running a softer compound in Q3, and still be able to run a race stint on that tyre without the times dropping off too badly, means that they could give the big 4 teams a bit of trouble in qualifying as well.
So, based on that, I reckon that a points finish for Sauber at Bahrein is on the cards, barring mechanical problems or accidents.

I always thought of Sauber as the 5th team. A clearly 5th team, with podiums not out of the question.

Probably Sauber thought of this when they gave de la Rosa a drive (next to Cowboyashi) ;)

 I knew there was a reason! - but wouldn't Heidfeld have been better, in that case?

I am pro de la Rosa. If he turns out to be to slow (to old), Bertrand Baguette will be keen to replace him. F1 needs a Belgian driver with a name like French bread!

I'm notoriously bad at these things, but let's try:

1st - Lewis Hamilton
2nd - Felipe Massa
3rd - Fernando Alonso
4th - Jenson Button
5th - Pedro de la Rosa
6th - Kamui Kobayashi
7th - Michael Schumacher
8th - Sebastian Vettel
9th - Nico Rosberg
10th - Robert Kubica

Pole Position: Lewis Hamilton
Fastest Lap: Fernando Alonso
First Retirement: Lucas di Grassi
Reject of the Race: the new part of the track
Infinite Improbability: BMW Sauber Ferrari
Deadbeat Team-Mate: Vitantonio Liuzzi (would have said Chandhok, but I believe Senna is equally ... "unexperienced")
Minor League Premiership: Virgin, Kamui Kobayashi

That begs the question if the Nosecone Championship is still alive ...

Let's add Minor League Premiership to this one as well: best new team and best new driver. Kind of like a Rookie of the Race thing.

I'll add it next round. For this round MLP will not count in the results. Since introducing it now before Bahrain will bring an unfair advantage (i.e you and a few other people) it might bring up quite a few questions

Good idea. I'll lock the Minor League Premiership thread to avoid confusion.

I think it's a good idea to amalgamate all the various prediction topics into one thread per race. And BTW I think Super Aguri's fantasy game sounds like fun - go enter it.

I also wonder, once the race weekend starts, whether we need separate threads for ROTR, DBTM and IIDOTR. But hey, it's your forum, I'm just the SA&SGPA.

You may have a point there... I can't email the Captain (who does the ROTR) and I don't remember who does the DBTM (sorry! ), but I'm OK to stop opening an IIDOTR thread per race, if we can make an "announcement" ("sticky") thread with the rules for the several awards. Am I right in thinking only Kuwashima can do that?

Another comment: it's a prove of vitality just how many ideas members are putting out. Top marks, everyone!

IMPORTANT

As the Minor League Premiership Thread has been mixed with this, I'll make here my amend about my mistaken Minor League Premiership prediction, which didn't completely fit into the rules.

The predictions:
QUALIFYING
1-Kobayashi
2-de la Rosa
3-Glock
4-di Grassi
5-Trulli
6-Kovalainen
7-Senna
8-Chandhok
RACE
1-Kobayashi
2-de la Rosa
3-Kovalainen
4-Trulli
DNFs: Glock, di Grassi, Senna, Chandhok.

Seeing as predicting round 1 and getting it correct is about as possible as spitting into the wind.

1. Vettel
2. Webber
3. Hamilton
4. Schumacher
5. Rosberg
6. Button
7. Massa
8. Barichello
9. Kobayashi
10. Alonso

Pole: A Red Bull
First Retirement: Bernie Ecclestone
ROTR: The Fuel Drinkers (whoever konks out first)
IIDOTR: Race Cancelled
DBTM: Lucas Di Grassi
MLPS: Whats this one for?

Red Bull apparently being the best car again and gosh darnit i hate it when every year Red Bull are apparently better than last yaer, and at the beginning of last year i decided "Sod it, I get this wrong every time" and bloody hell they ended up with a good car albeit Vettel smashing it up in melbourne.

So they'll be up at the front like everyone thinks

Ferrari are apparently thirsty beasts, therefore they will either blast away at the start and then run dry, or pace themselves and not be at the front :-S

And we'll talk about that Hispania reserve drive. I have a few Seat 600 pieces that will fit nicely in the car...

Post by mario »

Since I stumbled across this article on the F1Technical forums, I thought that it might well be worth throwing it into the mix and seeing what people make of it. It is from Nick Heidfeld, who had an interview with the German "Auto Motor und Sport" website (slightly mangled translation here http://translate.google.com/translate?j ... l=de&tl=en )
Interestingly, although he says that Ferrari seem to have a good car, he then pointed out that it does seem to be sensitive to the track conditions and layout (with the car suffering from some slight understeer). Nick then goes on to say that he thinks that the Red Bull car is in fact the best of the field (saying that the fact that the Bahrein race package didn't come in until so late held the car back), being stable and well balanced both in the slow and high speed corners.
The Mclaren, according to him, can match the others in the high speed corners, but struggles with excessive pitch sensitivity in the low speed corners, although the recent upgrades are supposed to have helped. The Sauber looks like a quick but difficult car to drive, in his opinion, looking very unsetled over the bumps, and he is worried that Kobayashi could very easily throw it off the track.
He thinks that, despite the relatively conservative approach, the Toro Rosso looks surprisingly good, whilst the Williams is average overall - not good in any particular area, but equally not the worst in any area either. The Renault looks nervous, and a bit tricky to drive, but Nick thinks it'll be a mid field runner once the upgrades are in place, whilst the Force India looks to have decent handling in the high speed turns, but is (again) a bit skittish, although he thinks that may be down to how Sutil drove the car during the tests.
Finally, he thinks that the VR-01 is terrrible, with no balance at all (saying that it is worse then his 2004 Jordan) whilst the T127 probably has quite a bit more downforce then the VR-01, but poor mechanical grip, lacking traction.

So, that might mke for interesting reading for some - although I think that I'll wait until the free practise sessions are over to make up my mind fully.

Okay, two practices have been ran, so we can sort of make comparisons. (It's still very fuzzy and unpredicatable.)

By the way, I will sadly miss qualifying. Too bad, since it promises to be very exciting...

Here we go then:
1st - Jenson Button
2nd - Lewis Hamilton
3rd - Michael Schumacher
4th - Sebastian Vettel
5th - Mark Webber
6th - Fernando Alonso
7th - Nico Rosberg
8th - Felipe Massa
9th - Rubens Barrichello
10th - Kamui Kobayashi

Pole Position: Lewis Hamilton
Fastest Lap: Nico Rosberg
First Retirement: Karun Chandhok (DNS)/Jaime Alguersuari (spin and subsequent crash in one of the new corners)
Reject of the Race: Hispania, for qualifying only with one car and treating the race like a big test session

De Crasheris

Bring on the race

Well I picked a Red Bull, but just the wrong one.

If I were to make my prediction for the race now, it would be rather different. I feel rejectful for my first attempt.

Hello? HELLO? I mean, none of them retired, but a perfect prediction. I demand at least half a point for that. :D

Ta-daah? ^_^
The fact that I predicted this after Friday practice and all my other predictions were horribly off, renders my prediction abilities credibility. IMHO.

Here are the final results and standings for this round:
2010 Bahrain Grand Prix:
1. Alonso
2. Massa
3. Hamilton
4. Vettel
5. Rosberg (How he didn't pass Vettel in the end nobody will ever know)
6. Schumacher
7. Button
8. Webber
9. Liuzzi
10. Barrichello

Pole: Vettel
Fastest lap: Alonso
First Retirement: Chandhok
ROTR: Over-hyping of the 2010 season
IIDOTR: Liuzzi
DBTMOTR: Button*

*Jenson Button isn't actually DBTMOTR. That honour would have fallen on Vitaly Petrov had his retirement not been mechanical related. As it was a mechanial issue that sidelined Petrov Button turned out to be the next dead beat so to speak and therefore he's DBTMOTR

Standings:
1. Thehemogoblin: 18 points ( Your first ever round of predicament predictions and straight to the top you go... nice)
2. Tristan1117: 17 points
=3. MinardiFan95: 16 points
=3. Ross Prawn: 16 points
=3. Sullivangate: 16 points
=3. FloProAct: 16 points
4. Ben Gilbert: 15 points

=6. Popi: 13 points
=6. Watka: 13 points
=6. Shinji: 13 points
=6. RedBullJack14: 13 points

=6. Valrys: 13 points
=7. DonTirri: 12 points
=7. Kowalski: 12 points
=8. Klon: 11 points (I thought about giving you a point for that epic first DNF prediction but instead you can have the IIPOTR (Infinite Improbability Prediction of the Round) award)
=8. Bleu: 11 points
=8. Warren Hughes: 11 points
=8. De Crasheris: 11 points
=8. MBF: 11 points

12. Pieman: 7 points
13. The Spanish Inquisition (Aka the Spanish Press): 6 points
=14. Luca Pacchiarini: 1 point (You didn't post anything for a finishing order but I'm giving you a point anyway because you got Fastest Lap right)\
=14. Waris: 1 point (- 10 points for late submission)

As always point out any errors to me and I'll fix them
