The Onyx team was formed by Mike Earle and Jo Chamberlain as they moved their F3000 team into Formula One. An eccentric Belgian named Jean-Pierre van Rossem brought in a lot of Moneytron and Marlboro to fund the two-car outfit.

Bertrand Gachot:
Complained of poor engine pick-up and understeer all weekend. Suffered several adventures on the way to 23rd on the grid. Spun early on, but charged back only to have a wheel-bearing failure which pitched his car into wall.
