Continued development of both their 1984 and 1985 cars has put the McLaren Formula One team over a million pounds beyond their lending limit, and nearly two million pounds in debt. The team began 1984 with a balance of over thirty million pounds, and an aggressive style of team management brought the team to victory, but reckless spending left them with nearly nothing to begin 1985 with, and consequently, banks were wary of offering significant financial support.
With an increase in Japanese investment in modern Formula One, McLaren management hoped to attract white knight investment from Honda, who would ensure the team's participation in motorsport would continue. However, a reverse takeover instead occurred - against the will of all major executives - from Philip Morris International.
Philip Morris have injected the team with a post-takeover payment - after all debts have been cleared - of £3.5 million, to "aid [the] transition from being a British company, to the more diplomatic and practical American style of corporate management." The company, who own the intentionally-recognized Marlboro brand - in addition to other popular brands like Chesterfield and Parliament Blue, have a long history of providing major sponsorship to Formula One teams (such as McLaren and Alfa Romeo) as well as junior open-wheel series like Formula 2 and Formula 3 in Europe, where McLaren - under the guise of 'Project Four' - began their relationship with the Marlboro brand, in 1980.
Philips Morris have made it clear that the 'McLaren brand' is of significant value, and are already planning a budget-priced cigarette line marketed towards teenagers and young adults, branded with the team's namesake:
As such, the team - despite turmoil at the top - has received only minor changes in the public's eyes; the FIA have confirmed that the team will no longer be known as 'McLaren', but rather, 'Marlboro Team McLaren'. The addition of the word 'Team', however, belies greater changes behind the scenes. Marlboro have insisted that the team's British executives be removed, and new management centered in the United States put in place.
...
You, FantometteBR, however, are not licked yet. As the departing boss of the McLaren - a team twice Constructor's Champion - when you speak, the world listens. In front of the world's press, you have one minute - one chance - to change the Formula One world.
What will you say?
* "There wasn't sufficient sponsorship out there." This choice will result in an increase, of approximately 10%, in sponsorship incomes for all teams, from 1986 onwards.
* "FOCA doesn't pay enough back to the teams, each quarter." This choice will result in an increase, of approximately 25%, of FOCA TV payments to all teams, from 1986 onwards.
* "Engine were too expensive - they're taking advantage of us." This choice will result in a reduction, of approximately 10%, of engine supply costs for all teams, from 1986 onwards.
* "F*** all of you." This choice will result in no changes within the industry.
The McLaren team are requested to respond to this event.
