Formula One - The Duel (Last Man Standing Championship)
Formula One - The Duel (Last Man Standing Championship)
So this was just a kinda dumb idea I had for see who could avoid being the worst F1 driver in a race for the longest. Under "The Duel" system of Formula One, first implemented in the 2016 season, the bottom 2 drivers of a race will fight in out the following out. The one who finishes higher will continue competing in the Championship, while the worse drive will see their season come to an end.
I've decided to start this in 2016 as it had the minimum 20 races I was after, which was not true of 2015, although the extra team (and therefore 2 cars) make it slightly messier than the usual seasons, although better than 2020, which is a better of a mess due to the lack of races. It is worth noting beforehand that I will be taking the car to matter most, rather than the driver. Otherwise driver swaps will quickly make a mess of this whole thing.
2016 - Part 1
Race 1 - Australia: Our first race of the season takes place in Australia this season and due to the number of drivers exceeding the number of drivers exceeding the number of races, somebody has to be eliminated automatically. Daniil Kvyat is unable to reach the grid due to an electrical issue, ending the season instantly for the first Red Bull car and leaving this race as coming down to determining who the two drivers competing in The Duel will be Bahrain. This question would be answered during lap 17 as Fernando Alonso runs into the back of Esteban Guiterrez, ending the race for both drivers and confirming the face off.
Rosberg, Hamilton & Vettel podium.
22nd: Daniil Kvyat (Red Bull)
Fernando Alonso Stoffel Vandoorne (McLaren) vs. Esteban Guiterrez (Haas)
Race 2 - Bahrain: As with all races, there are two main things to watch here. Firstly the Duel between Alonso and Guiterrez and secondly the back of the race for who will be our next two drivers to face off. The second of those questions would be quickly answered as Sebastian Vettel's engine gives up on him during warm-up and Jolyon Palmer goes into the pits with a hydraulic failure. Except it will actually be Vandoorne v Guiterrez as Alonso is ruled out of the race due to injuries incurred during his crash last round. This was quite boring answered when a brake failure would end Esteban Guiterrez's F1 career and handing Stoffel Vandoorne the first ever elimination.
Rosberg, Raikkonen & Hamilton podium
21st: Esteban Guitterez (Haas)
Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) vs. Jolyon Palmer (Renault)
Race 3 - China: Good news, bad news. The good news is that this duel doesn't end with a disappointing retirement. The bad news is it is win by such utter dominance it may as well have been. Vettel finishes the race in second, while Jolyon Palmer finishes in 20th. Vettel may have even lapped Palmer, I didn't check. The bottom 2 however does matter and in 18th place comes Sauber's Felipe Nasr, followed by MRT's Rio Haryanto. These two drivers will be forced to fight for their survival in Russia.
Rosberg, Vettel & Ricciardo podium
20th: Jolyon Palmer (Renault)
Felipe Nasr (Sauber) vs. Rio Haryanto (MRT)
Race 4 - Russia: This race features two major collisions that knock three drivers out of the race as Sebastian Vettel, Nico Hulkenberg & Rio Haryanto are all taken out of the race, eliminating Haryanto and sending Vettel & Hulkenberg to race off in Spain. This also means the entire race is essentially meaningless as everything important happens in the first corner.
Rosberg, Hamilton & Raikkonen podium
19th: Rio Haryanto (MRT)
Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) vs. Nico Hulkenberg (Force India)
Race 5 - Spain Sebastian Vettel becomes the first driver to face the duel twice as he takes on fellow German Nico Hulkenberg. Also notable is Max Verstappen is taken out of championship contention by Red Bull who put him in the eliminated Red Bull seat, while Daniil Kvyat takes over the still racing Toro Rosso. The first lap shows us who will face off in the next duel as the two Mercedes collide during the first lap and are both forced to retire. Nico Hulkenberg's power unit catches fire on lap 22, bring his season to an end, while Sebastian Vettel takes his second elimination with a second place finish.
Raikkonen, Vettel & Ricciardo podium
18th: Nico Hulkenberg (Force India)

2016 - Part 2
Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) vs. Nico Rosberg (Mercedes)
Race 6 - Monaco: Kvyat runs into technical issues with his Toro Rosso, sending him a lap down instantly, while a broken front wing ends up causing Kimi Raikkonen to retire, with Kvyat eventually ending his race too to confirm our next duel. Both Mercedes had a better race than you would expect of drivers facing elimination, as both would land in the points paying positions. Lewis Hamilton would cross the finish line in first place, eliminating Nico Rosberg and ending his F1 career in Monaco.
Hamilton, Ricciardo & Perez podium
17th - Nico Rosberg (Mercedes)
Daniil Kvyat (Toro Rosso) vs. Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari)
Race 7 - Canada: This race sees the first driver in the duel for Europe confirmed early as Jenson Button is forced to retire due to engine issues, with Felipe Massa's engine overheating setting him up as the second driver in the duel. Kimi Raikkonen would finish well clear of Daniil Kvyat, eliminating the Russian for the second time.
Hamilton, Vettel & Bottas podium
16th - Daniil Kvyat (Toro Rosso)
Jenson Button (McLaren) vs. Felipe Massa (Williams)
Race 8 - Europe: Unfortunately we're not yet at the point where car troubles aren't setting up the nominations for the duel as Carlos Sainz Jr. retires on lap 31 with suspension troubles, while Brake issues sees Pascal Wehrlein confirmed as his opponent. What this does mean however is next race we will have our first team eliminated from the series, as both are the last drivers of their respective teams. This race is actually quite a close one, as Button finishes 19 seconds behind Massa and is eliminated. Only 3 teams have both drivers still remaining, in Ferrari, Williams & Sauber
Vettel, Perez & Raikkonen podium
15th - Jenson Button (McLaren)
Carlos Sainz Jr. (Toro Rosso) vs. Pascal Wehrlein (MRT)
Race 9 - Austria: Sebastian Vettel's rear tire explodes on him, sending him into the barrier and the next duel, his third appearance this season. Brake failure for Felipe Massa sees him also return to the Duel as he has brake trouble right at the end of the race and is forced to retire. Both duelling cars do finish one after the other in the standings, with Carlos Sainz Jr. finishing ahead of Pascal Wehrlein, sending the German home and ending the season for MRT.
Hamilton, Raikkonen & Ricciardo podium
14th - Pascal Wehrlein (MRT)
11th - Manor Racing MRT
Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) vs. Felipe Massa (Williams)
Race 10 - Britain: Marcus Ericsson is forced out of the race on lap 11 with a power united failure, followed by Romain Grosjean on lap 17 with transmission troubles to confirm the two drivers facing the Duel.Sebastian Vettel picks up a 5 second penalty in this race for pushing opponent Felipe Massa off the track, but it is not enough as he remains ahead of Massa, ending the Brazilian's season.

Race 11- Hungary: The good news is everyone in this race finishes, meaning it comes all down to the who finishes first. In terms of the duel, it is a clear win for Romain Grosjean, who finishes in 9th place, while Marcus Ericsson is eliminated after finishing dead last. With this Ferrari are now the only team with both drivers still going. 2016 is the first season to give us a different champion, as Hamilton eliminates Rosberg early, allowing him to take the title over Ricciardo at Abu Dhabi. Next season will not feature an instant elimination as we'll have enough races to avoid such a problem.
Re: Formula One - The Duel (Last Man Standing Championship)
2017 - Part 1
Race 1 - Australia: Fortunately no need for an automatic elimination this time, so the only thing that really matters is the first two drivers out of the race. The first would be Romain Grosjean, forced to retire due to a water leak and his opponent would be Jolyon Palmer who retired a couple laps later with brake issues.
Vettel, Hamilton & Bottas podium
Romain Grosjean (Haas) vs. Jolyon Palmer (Renault)
Race 2 - China: Rookie driver Lance Stroll is put into the duel almost instantly after a collision on lap one, with fellow rookie Antonio Giovinazzi being confirmed as his opponent following an accident a few laps into the race. In terms of the duel itself, both drivers managed to make it to the finish line, with Grosjean coming across in 11th place, while Jolyon Palmer would come in 13th, ending his F1 career.
Hamilton, Vettel & Verstappen podium
20th - Jolyon Palmer (Renault)
Lance Stroll (Williams) vs. Pascal Wehrlein (Sauber)
Race 3 - Bahrain: Antonio Giovinazzi had been filling in for Wehrlein, who returns to the series after missing the first two races of the season and is instantly forced to compete in the duel against Stroll. Our first important moment of the race happens when Stoffel Vandoorne's McLaren is unable to start the race due to an issue with water pressure. Electrical troubles for Kevin Magnusssen would put him in the second spot and a few laps later a collision would bring Lance Stroll's debut season to an end.
Vettel, Hamilton & Bottas podium
19th - Lance Stroll (Williams)
Stoffel Vandoorne (McLaren) vs. Kevin Magnussen (Haas)
Race 4 - Russia: Fernando Alonso is quick to take a spot in the duel as his car is unable to compete in the race, automatically confirming a spot for him in the duel. His opponent is determined to be Romain Grosjean who is taken out by a collision on lap one. The race between Magnussen and Vandoorne is a pretty close one, with Magnussen finishing in 12th, while Vandoorne finishes 13th and is eliminated.
Bottas, Vettel & Raikkonen podium
18th - Stoffel Vandoorne (McLaren)
Fernando Alonso (McLaren) vs. Romain Grosjean (Haas)
Race 5 - Spain: Funnily enough, another battle between a McLaren and a Haas, as Fernando Alonso risks elimination at his home race. The next duel is quickly determined as Raikkonen and Verstappen collide and are both taken out of the race. There's once again not much in, but Romain Grosjean is able to rack up a second elimination for himself and ends Alonso's season.

Race 6 - Monaco: Nico Hulkenberg takes the first spot in the next duel after his gearbox gives up on him and he is forced to retire. 15th - Pascal Wehrlein (Sauber)
Carlos Sainz Jr. (Toro Rosso) vs. Felipe Massa (Williams)

Lando Norris (McLaren) vs. Alex Albon (Toro Rosso)
Race 8 - France: Romain Grosjean is our only retirement this race as he locks up the first spot in the duel. Hamilton, Bottas & Leclerc podium
15th - Alex Albon (Toro Rosso)
10th - Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda
Romain Grosjean (Haas) vs. George Russell (Williams)

Re: Formula One - The Duel (Last Man Standing Championship)
2020 - Part 1
Due to COVID's impact on the Formula One calendar in 2020, this season ends up being a bit of a mess as there was not really enough races for the number of drivers that competed in this season. Because of this the first races will be automatic elimination and our first two duels will actually be double duels.
Race 1 - Austria: Because of the way this race went, it all comes down to whose car can survive the longest. First car down was Max Verstappen's Red Bull, who had electrical issues taking his car out. Unfortunately for him, this race is automatic elimination and that's his season done, having completed just 11 laps. That surely won't be disappointing for fans. We actually need two duels from this race, so the bottom 4 will face off in two pairings. Daniel Ricciardo is our first name, when his car overheated and gave up on him. Lance Stroll's engine would start having issues putting him in next, followed by the brakes giving up on the cars of both Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean.
Bottas, Leclerc & Norris podium
20th - Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
Daniel Ricciardo (Renault) vs. Romain Grosjean (Haas)
Lance Stroll (Racing Point) vs. Kevin Magnussen)
Race 2 - Styria: It's the same track again, when all these drivers get a chance to complete the race they couldn't finish. Except Verstappen, who is eliminated. We once again need 4 drivers to fill out two duels so we have the correct numbers and our first two nominees are in quickly as the two Ferrari's collide early and are forced to retire. Esteban Ocon's car gives up on him, sending him in next followed. No other drivers would retire meaning it mattered who crossed the line in last. On the current duel front it was a bad day for Haas as Ricciardo & Stroll would finish ahead of Magnussen & Grosjean meaning the team was eliminated after only the second race of the season. Nicholas Latifi was last across the line and will compete in the next set of duels
Hamilton, Bottas & Albon podium
19th - Romain Grosjean (Haas)
18th - Kevin Magnussen (Haas)
10th - Haas F1 Team
Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) vs. Nicholas Latifi (Williams)
Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) vs. Esteban Ocon (Renault)
Race 3 - Hungary: Good news, we only need two drivers for the duel in this race, ending the madness that starts this season. Only one driver retires this race as Pierre Gasly's AlphaTauri have trouble with the gearbox and brings his race to an end. His opponent will be whomever crosses the line last (without being eliminated). Lewis Hamilton manages to lap every single driver in the duel, but even so two drivers have a clear advantage. Vettel comes across in 5th and Leclerc in 9th to keep both Ferrari's in the competition. Ocon finishes in 12th and is eliminated. The Williams have a miserable race as Russell & Latifi are the last to cross the line. Latifi is eliminated, while Russell goes into the next duel.
Hamilton, Bottas & Stroll podium
17th - Nicholas Latifi (Williams)
16th - Esteban Ocon (Renault)
Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri) vs. George Russell (Williams)
Race 4 - Britain: Nico Hulkenberg in the Racing Point doesn't even start the race, putting himself into our next duel, with his opponent being Daniil Kvyat who is taken our fairly early by a puncture. Almost everybody finishes on the leading lap (except Raikkonen, who is safe anyway), with the gap ending up being 21 seconds, as Pierre Gasly brings Russell's season to an end.
Hamilton, Leclerc & Ricciardo podium
15th - George Russell (Williams)
9th - Williams Racing
Nico Hulkenberg (Racing Point) vs. Daniil Kvyat (AlphaTauri)
Race 5 - 70th Anniversary: 24 seconds decided this race's duel as every driver finishes the race. Hulkenberg finishes in 6th place, while an 8th place bring Kvyat's season to an end. The two Alfa Romeo's of Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi are the last drivers across the line, who will face off next race to represent the team going forwards.
Hamilton, Bottas & Leclerc podium
14th - Daniil Kvyat (AlphaTauri)
Antonio Giovinazzi (Alfa Romeo) vs. Kimi Raikkonen (Alfa Romeo)
Race 6 - Spain: Charles Leclerc retires with electrical issues and after a good couple of races will be forced to compete in the duel. His opponent will be last across the line, which is once again the two Alfa Romeo's. Kimi Raikkonen would manage to stay ahead of Antonio Giovinazzi, eliminating his young teammate and keeping his own season alive.
Hamilton, Bottas & Stroll podium
13th - Antonio Giovinazzi (Alfa Romeo)

Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) vs. Kimi Raikkonen (Alfa Romeo)
Race 7 - Belgium: Carlos Sainz Jr. is unable to start the race, putting him into the next duel. All other drivers finish the race and it is an incredibly close finish with Raikkonen finishing 1.3 seconds ahead of former teammate Vettel (who will compete in the next duel) and 3.4 seconds ahead of Leclerc (who is eliminated)
Hamilton, Bottas & Ricciardo podium
12th - Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
Carlos Sainz Jr. (McLaren) vs. Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari)
Race 8 - Italy: Vettel's brakes give up on him after 6 laps, ending the season for both him and Ferrari early. It's a miserable year for Ferrari overall, who finish in 8th place. The entire field is split by less than 40 seconds as Pierre Gasly takes the win just barely ahead of Sainz. Kimi Raikkonen and Alexander Albon are the last two across the line and will compete in the next duel.
Gasly, Sainz & Stroll podium
11th - Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari)
8th - Scuderia Ferrari
Alexander Albon (Red Bull) vs. Kimi Raikkonen (Alfa Romeo)
Race 9 - Tuscany: Gasly & Sainz both go out early race due to collisions, putting them in as the next drivers to face the duel just two races after having been competing for the race win. The Mercedes pull off a one-two ahead of Alex Albon who is well ahead of Kimi Raikkonen, ending the Ice Man's year.
Hamilton, Bottas & Albon podium

Sergio Perez (Racing Point) vs. Daniel Ricciardo (Renault)
Race 16 - Sakhir: Those who know this race know who wins this duel. A bad start for Sergio Perez sees him sitting in dead last, but through the course of the race he fights his way through the field to claim the win. In this universe, it's probably a lot less impressive as there are only 2 other cars on the track. Ricciardo claims second while third place goes to George Russell which shows a definite loop hole in this system that would need to be fixed.

Re: Formula One - The Duel (Last Man Standing Championship)
2021 - Part 1
Race 1 - Bahrain: This race is for duel qualification and doesn't end up needing to go the full race distance as Haas rookie Nikita Mazepin spins out at turn 3, bringing his race to an end. Everybody else would continue on a lot longer, but eventually Fernando Alonso's brakes would give up on him and he would be forced to retire from the race. Verstappen after nearly a full year of not racing scores a podium
Hamilton, Verstappen & Bottas podium
Nikita Mazepin (Haas) vs. Fernando Alonso (Alpine)
Race 2 - Emilia Romagna: Mazepin's season is immediately put into jeopardy as he collides with Nicholas Latifi on lap one, but while Latifi is forced to retire, Mazepin is able to continue. Alonso finishes over a lap ahead of Mazepin, ending the Russian's F1 career.

Verstappen, Sainz & Norris podium
Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) vs. Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes)
Race 6 - Azerbaijan: A turbocharger failure ends the race for Esteban Ocon who will have to compete in the next duel, with Lance Stroll being revealed as his opponent due to a rear tire failure.
