The Monaco 1000... now THAT would be epic

The crashes would be awesome, but how many would actually finish the race?

Your question reminded me of the US GP 2005. One of the Hungarian commentators asked from the others: "What if all six retires?" then the other one replied: "Then we will talk about the weather... FOR A WHILE!"

But really, it's a good idea! A 5-hour Monaco marathon, with like... five finishers!

make the nurburgring 24hours part of the F1 championship (normal points after 6 and 12 hours and double points at 24 hours) however, still allow all regular competitors + sportscars
would be nice to see yamamoto battle for position with a renault clio cup driver

but actually, a formula libre (all types of open wheeler cars allowed, on the condition that they meet safety regulations, doens't need to be recent cars, older F1 cars could well be used) 24 hours race would be interesting to try, even a 1000 km, as 24h would be financially troublesome

and coincidentially my hometrack zolder needs more participants for their 24h race (they can't even get to the number of 20 participants these days) although that circuit would ensure no car would survive without changing gearboxes regularly...

Would'nt that be hell for the drivers? I haven't heard of anyone who's won the 24H Le Mans going solo. Someone's got to switch out eventually.

of course you need to change drivers if you did 24h, but it can be done with 3 (the real reason teams drive with 4 drivers in endurance is to field 1or 2 crappy pay-drivers,and let the rest do the work, or seldomly to go full speed 24h long, which would be suicidal for the car) just give each driver of the same car exactly as much points at the points scoring moments (but a driver must have driven like 25% or so to be eligible for points, this excludes pitstops and reparations)

the 24h must be included in F1, IRL, superleague, GP2, world series, euro F3, GP3, F2, japanese F3000 and maybe others :D but a team only fields 1 instead of 2 cars (well, 50% of the cars they use in the regular championship, the third driver will be the official test driver) unless they wish to field all their cars of course
my feeling gets that probably a GP2 car would take the overall win

Nobody's ever won the 24 Hours of Le Mans solo. Pierre Levegh came close in a Talbot in 1952, but missed a gear change in the last hour. The 1949 winner, Luigi Chinetti, drove for 23.5 hours, but that's not a solo attempt.

Still, the cars would never take the stress. They're built for two-hour races, even if the engines have to last for more than that.

A GT3 car is built for one hour races maximum (sprint), yet some cars (mostly the german cars) prove to be a very decent car in endurance racing (a porsche supercup has always been 'the safe route' for anyone willing to drive a GT in endurance, although the porsche supercup has always been a sprint championship) Then of course GT3 aren't built for racing alone, but very racing specific cars like most GT1's were and still are extremely reliable, so race specific cars are used to be more reliable than road versions.
yes GT3 cars aren't as permormant as single seaters, but they're fragile as hell, with some wise driving (a driver like jenson button could do very well with this) you can nurse them on to the finish, without any big problems. Sure you can't attack the full 200% but you can still hold on a good pace.
Maybe another example is a LMP2 car in le mans, very fragile cars, but somehow some teams manage to go to the finish without problems.
It also depends on the track, racing in le mans is very hard on the car, but racing in spa isn't really problematic (mechinical retirements are usualy because teams put in drivers with totally different driving styles, including some hopeless pay-drivers)
sure a F1 car would probably be too fragile, but i suspect most single seaters would have a realistic chance at getting to the finish line, especially the single-make series, as these are pretty reliable, just because they have to, because else the series will die (A1) or choose an other chassis maker.
Of course, if you drive a 24h race like hamilton drives a regular F1 race, you're never going to get to the finish.

i know it's never ever going to happen, but still, i can dream, right?

Make Bernie retire, and then turn F1 into a sport, not a commercial exercise THEN

1. Scrap: Valencia, Shanghai, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, India
2. Replace with: Kylami, Adelaide, Estoril, Watkins Glen, Nurburgring
3. Unrestricted entry list: 39 entries per race, pre-qualifying, basically if you want to enter F1 you can
4. Standard tyres, engines, brakes, etc.
5. Unlimited tyres and engines per weekend
6. T-Cars, in case of another Spa '98
7. No diffusers, flat bottomed cars, turbos, skinny front/rear wings

So, less cr*p tracks, more great tracks, more cars/sessions, more power, less grip. Like the 1980s, essentially!

edit: How about class-based races, like Le Mans, where you have F1, GP2, GP3, F2 cars all race in their respective classes. You see the (sometimes spectacular) action that causes in LMS and ALMS. Imagine that with a massive TV audience and Johnathan Legard's commentary!

I hope Jeoren Slaghekke gets into F1 just so I can say that I've talked to an F1 driver.

I hope I adressed that situation enough.

I don´t agree. I don´t agree with the testing ban either. My opinion is that, to save costs; tests should be held at some GP tracks just AFTER the GP itself, chosing like 4 or 5 races a season. For example, Test in Montmeló on Monday and Tuesday after the GP. I would add a special rule to this which says that none of the race drivers can test, so opportunities are given to test or young drivers.

I thought about it, but I don't think the FIA would allow F1 to run the Indianapolis oval, its just too fast.

MAN UP AND RACE IT

You guys are thinking too small. We need the Firehawk 600.

Now this is actually a good idea.
I would also make it a THREE-day test for the bottom half of the teams. NOT being based upon their LAST year's results, instead, the current season results would be counted.
This would also give the young guns the opportunity, the teams some much needed data and this would definitely be a win-win situation!
