Diniz had a fantastic season with 3 wins, 6 2nd places and 1 3rd place, finishing 10 races in the points, more then any other driver except Salo who also managed 10 but only scored 23 points. Only his team mate Moreno could have challenged him but over drove the car and retired more. Forti had 5 1-2 finishes, with Moreno being 1st for 4 of those times, so do wonder if he had driven a bit slower and less harsh if he could have been champion. Diniz also score ovre double the points of the person in 3rd place which was Badoer who had a winless season but was on the podium 4 times and scored in 9 races, Inoue and Montermini were just behind but won two races each.

Surprise win of the season must go to Irvine who in a Jordan car that was slow performed miracles to finish ahead of the faster Pacific of Montermini and Katayamas Tyrrell.

Forti clocked up the podiums and wins and only Minardi and Pacific had any chance to challenge, although the Pacific was undoubtly the fastest car on the track it was fragile and hard to drive and this is reflected in the 5 wins and only 2 2nd places the Pacific team managed to get. Minardi were a lot slower but were consistant getting 8 podiums and 10 other points positions. Jordan only got 2 points finishes but had Irvines win to boost them up the table. Larrousse entered but never raced.

It was a dark year, one driver that could have been champion was killed in qualifying for the San Marino GP and another was killed in the race. Ratzenberger had won the previous Pacific GP and look set for a pole position, so it indeed was a sad loss to the motorsport world.

It was a year of many drivers, over 53 drivers stepped up to qualify (or not) to race. The teams that impressed the most in pre season testig were the new Simtek team, Ligier and Lotus. After 8 races, it was tight as 6 different drivers won races and only David Brabham managed to win more then 2, Panis was the most consistant scoring in 7 out of the 8 races getting 4 podiums. The table stood at D Brabham 32, Panis 28, Bernard 27, Lamy 17, Zanardi 16 and Gounon 16. Three more races saw Zanardi and Bernard impress the most with a win for Zanardi and constant points and 2 podiums for Bernard, D Brabham could only manage a single second and Panis struggle with a single 6th place. It stood D Brabham 38, Bernard 36, Panis 29, Zanardi 26, Gounon 22. The next two races saw D Brabham have a awful time with 2 more DNFs, Panis finally won a race in the season and Gounon got another podium. It was close at Panis 39, Bernard 39, D Brabham 38, Gounon 28, Zanardi 26.

A clause in Panises contract meant he could dictate who the 2nd driver was and he played his lead driver card and got Bernard fired, Bernard managed to get a one race deal with Lotus and thought his chance at a championship was over. Gounon also knew his championship chances were over as David Brabham wanted a team mate who would not beat him. The next three races would see the Simtek second seat be kept warm with Schiattarella and Inoue. It seemed a straight fight with Panis and D Brabham with Zanardi with an outside chance.

The European GP arrived, Schiattarella got the Simtek in pole, 7 tenths faster then David Brabham, Bernard in his one chance race qualified in 5th behind the Larrousses but ahead of team mate Zanardi, Panis had a terrible time and qualified down in 16th. The race saw Brabham in a good podium position before his engine expired, Schiattarella won the race ahead of Bernard, Zanardi was 4th and Panis finished way down in 11th. The championship stood at Bernard 45, Panis 39, D Brabham 38, Zanardi 29.

Two races left and in the penultimate race, Inoue in the Simtek qualified on pole, Salo taking the other Lotus seat was on the front row but Brabham was behind Inoue, Lagorce who replaced Bernard was in 7th a few tenths quicker the Panis who seemed to let the presure get to him. Zanardi was down in 10th and looked out of it. However the three main contenders would finish to give the most exciting final race in recent memory. Zanardi with great skill both in the car and in the pits won the race, D Brabham finished second and Panis was 3rd but would have been disappointed at not winning the race. Salo was 4th and Bernard would have been feeling bad at this point. The championship was looked tight at Bernard 45, D Brabham 44, Panis 43 and Zanardi 39. Zanardi could get the championship with a win or a 2nd place as he had more wins on count back but he needed D Brabham to finish 3rd or worse if he won or 6th or out of the points if he was second and for Panis to finish 5th or worse if he was 2nd. D Brabham just needed to finish ahead of Panis and score a 5th or better and Panis needed a 4th or better and needed to D Brabham to be 6th or worse and for Zanardi to not finish in the points.

The Australian GP arrived and qualifying seemed to favour Brabham as he was in 3rd behind his teammate Schiattarella. Zanardi was down in 13th and Panis was in 15th. At a press conference that had the three drivers and Bernard, Brabham did seem the most upbeat saying that he should get a podium which should be enough for him to wrap up the title, Zanardi also played up his chances saying he won from 10th in the last race so fate would decide, Panis looked the most nervous especially sitting next to Bernard and said he was confident of a good points score and hopefully grabbing the title, Bernard wished the three drivers the best but hoped that they would all retire with simple failures.

The race came and after 19 laps Brabham was in a commanding second behind his team mate, Zanardi and Panis were out of the points but had made up several places. Schiattarella retired with a gearbox failure the next lap and Simtek told Brabham to slow down. 20 laps later Zanardi was just outside the points but his throttle started to play up, he pitted but had to retire so it was now a three horse race. 9 laps later, possibily from overdriving the engine in D Brabhams care started to smoke and so did D Brabhams chances of a championship. Panis was now in 10th he drove hard and after 20 more laps (and some retirements) was in 4th, but a few laps from the end he was trying to overtake a back marker but made a mistake, spinning the car and touching a barrier, he kept the car going and had to make a pitstop. In the pits the Ligier crew looked at the car, changed the tyres and decided after a minute everything was okay but by this time he was lapped by his team mate plus JJ Letho and Martini, Fittipaldi, Frentzen and Alesi also passed him in the pits, he tried and tried but just could not find a way past Alesi let alone Frentzen. After the race, he went back to the motorhome and left, knowing he had blown it. Bernard was champion and he didn't have to turn a wheel.

Lotus had 6 drivers during the course of the season and each one scored points, because of other commitments Zanardi could not race the first few races of the season and this probably cost him the championship. Simtek will be happy with second as they pit Ligier to the runner up spot due to Wins. The other teams were largely disappointing with D Hill scoring a great win and the only points the underfunded Williams team managed. Pacific had a great car but it was too unreliable and failed to qualify in a lot of races due to the drivers being scared of the car, sadly Pacific could not afford new drivers and the pay drivers that tested lapped even slower.

Wow, Williams were really awful back then. I'm happy that they have shown so much improvement in the last few years, although the second half of this season was a bit poor.

I hope they sign Maldonado, that guy has potential.

It was a season where there was high competition and fragile cars, in 16 races only a single drive in the form of Philippe Alliot who only had 14 races but finished in 9 of them to score only 27 points. 10 drivers managed to win with only 3 of them managing to see the podium 5 times and it created an exciting season. By the halfway point Warrick in the Footwork seemed most likely to win, the championship stood at Warrick 23, Badoer 20, A Suzuki 18, Alberto 16, De Cesaris 13. With 5 races to go, De Cesaris got his 2nd win, Warrick got his second and Prost scored an unlikely but thrilling victory in Hungary ahead of the two Tyrrells of De Cesaris and Katayama. Badoer had not score any points for a number of races, but the championship read like this Warrick 33, De Cesaris 29, Alboreto 22, Badoer 20, Katayama 20.

Two races later and Katayama scored two important wins, Badoer also scored two podiums to throw them up the table, it was Katayama 40, Warrick 33, Badoer 30, De Cesaris 29, Alboreto 28, Alliot 25. The next two races saw Katayama fail to finish and Badoer with a win before the BMS team ran out of money and denied Badoer any chance of the championship as Katayama had more wins. New driver T Suzuki also surpirsed with a win. De Cesaris managed a third and Warrick was still scoreless. It was tight with a race to go it was all open. Katayama 40, Badoer 40, Warrick 33, De Cesaris 33.

However in the final race in Australia, T Suzuki won again, De Cesaris was a fair way back but was 2nd but it was not enough to claim the championship. Katayama failed to score points but had won the championship.

With Katayama and De Cesaris fighting for the championship it was no wonder they help Tyrrell win the constructors championship. BMS despite going bust held on the claim 2nd with Larrousse claiming 3rd after the epic wins of T Suzuki. Williams were a lot higher then they expected with Prosts fantastic win in Hungary, Lotus and Ligier will be disappointed at being so low down, especially after Blundell claiming 3rd at the first race and Zanardi also getting 3rd in Europe.

Thanks for all the kind words, I am hoping I can finish all these in the next month and my dream would be for Jamie and Enoch to read out the list of Reverse world champions in a podcast, preferably the season review one, as you have HWNSNBM and Webber as champions, with HWNSNBM getting a record 9 wins!

Pieman wrote:Can I just say that this is probably the best thread I have seen on this forum. If I had the time, I would compile short race reports to go with each race.

That would be fantastic! Although I try to write the reports with a litle bit of drama, some epic battles of wheel to wheel action would be great.

Send me a email if you want the excel (xls) / openoffice (ods) files which list the winners, places, points, etc.

Om to 1991 (9-6-4-3-2-1 and 11 best results) and the 1980s to come :D

There was a good standard of driving between the drivers, although the fragile nature of the cars meant that only two drivers completed more then half the races. Although the points suggest that it was tight at the top, Paul Belmondo got 3 wins in the first half of the season, scored a 4th and a 3rd and was leading the championship comfortablely, but had to give up his seat as March sold it to pay driver Naspetti who manage a single 3rd and some other minor points. Alboreto scored two wins and finished more races then anyone else but apart from one other 3rd place it was full of 5ths and 6ths. Morbidelli scored a win and two 2nds but was 4th too many times when he needed good solid podiums, he did raise his game in the last few races to give him his win and 2nd but it was too late by then. 11 drivers managed to get wins this season.

March deserved to win, they managed 5 wins with Wendlinger not too far behind his team mate, however March were in trouble, they designed a fast car and had powerful but expensive Ilmor engines and had to end the season with pay drivers, including running Lammers who had last raced 10 years ago. Minardi were stiffled a little bit with C Fittipaldi not winning any races, he did manage two 2nd places but was behind Belmondo so critics could say he was unlucky, but he did better then A Suzuki who could only mange a 2nd and a 3rd and a few minor points. The Larrousse and BMS Scuderia Italia teams fought hard for 4th with Larrousse getting it with a single win by Katayama although Martini did well with 3 2nd places. Fondmetal disappointed with a single 3rd place by Tarquini even though you felt they could have scored a lot more points, the car and engine were unreliable and it had to be said Tarquini showed by his single 3rd place he could perform if the car didn't fail. Andrea Moda scoring no points is a surprise although the team were mismanaged to such a degree that it was more a farce then a force.

This is absolutely fantastic! I could also do a few race reports if you want. ;)

...and after a few years, Minardi seems to have a dynasty bigger than Ferrari. That's going to be the only time I'm going to say that.

This could have so easily been Brundles championship, he won the first three races (and had 30 points) and look like dominating the season but he then went from bad to worse, in Monaco he was disqualifying after qualifying for failing to be weighed. He then failed to finish the next 4 races. His closest rivals were Nakajima 23, Boutsen 20 and Comas 20. The next five races, Brundle could only manage 2 3rds and some minor points, Boutsen managed to win 2 races and a minor points finish, Nakajima could only manage a 2nd and a 4th and Comas only scored 2 points with two 6th places. It was Brundle 43, Boutsen 42 and Nakajima 32.

In Spain, Nakajima managed a win with Brundle and Boutsen failing to score, it was getting closer Brundle 43, Boutsen 42 and Nakajima 42. Japan was a turning point, Brundle and Nakajima failed to score but Boutsen got a 3rd place. Boutsen 46, Brundle 43 and Nakajima 42. The final race of the season and Brundle under pressure messes up in qualifying and damages the car and thus fails to set a lap and gets his only DNQ of the season. In the race Nakajima spins off and Boutsen has a accident so the points stay as they are and Boutsen becomes a champion.

Ligier just hold off Tyrrell to claim the constructors championship although Comas failed to score any wins. Blundell was disappointing in the Brabham scoring two podiums and a few other minor points. Hakkinen and Herbert did well to get Lotus to 4th, narrowly beating the BMS Scuderia Italia team who were disappointing given the speed of the car. The Modena car was a ill handling car, that the drivers failed to qualify on a regular basis, however when they did dial the car in and qualify they did manage to score good points, Larini managing two wins and a 3rd place. The Larrousse was an unreliable mess which failed to finish a lot of races and as the season went on they ran out of money and the car thn started to fail to finish qualifying, A Suzuki and Bernard managing a 4th place each. The AGS like the Modena was a ill handling car but only Tarquini could handle the car managing a good 2nd place in the first race of the season before the car became troublesome. Coloni was a horrible car that failed to qualify or sometimes fail to finish qualifying, it is rumoured the team has been sold, which begs the question did the new owners ever watch a race?

Ligier did not design the quickest car on the track but it was the most consistant and did not retire that often, even from the early races it was clear to see thta the Ligier was going to score lots of points, however Alliot scored two wins to Larinis none, Larini was the most consistant driver bar none however he only manged a single 2nd place and 5 3rds and 6 4ths plus a 5th for good measure, where as Alliot got two wins, 4 2nds and a 3rd and 4th to take the title. As a whole the other drivers were disappointing but there are some drivers that did go that extra mile.

Grouillard in the sole Osella took the evil handling car and won every race that he finished, he retired 5 times and 7 times failed to qualify the car normally due to some car fault, he ended up 3rd in the championship. Dalmas also got 2 wins and a 2nd in every race he finished with the awful AGS car, fast but handled like a rice pudding. JJ Letho also had an awful car in the Onyx but managed two lucky wins before Onyx went bust due to management incompitence. A Senna even got a point just because only 6 cars finished and he happend to be the last car running.

There is not much to say, Ligier managed to score points in 21 races out of the 32 they could have score in and only Arrows managed to finish in the double figures with 12. So Ligier were the dominant team and the others were a clear second best. Osella, AGS and Onyx have a single driver to thank for their high positions and Coloni and Life came along to make up the numbers and failed to qualify in a any races.

After 6 races it was tight at the top with Herbert leading with 25 points with a win, 2 2nds and a 3rd and De Cesaris also with 25 points with a win, a 2nd two 3rds and a 5th. Danner was not too far behind with two wins and two forths with 24 points. However Herbert had a niggling injury and was let go by the team, he managed to get a couple of races for Tyrrell but did not score any points so his season was good as done. After 11 races, Arnoux was on 22 with a win, a 2nd, a 3rd and a 4th. Palmer managed a win, a 2nd and a 4th in thos 5 races for 18 points. However De Cesaris only manged two more fifths and Danner had nothing to show for his races.

With just 3 races to go, Arnoux managed a win and a 2nd place to move into the lead, Sala managed to move up the table with a win, a 2nd and a 3rd. Palmer, Danner and De Cesaris scored no points, Rial got fed up with Danners repair bill and fired him. Modena won a race and was in the hunt too. The championship stood at Arnoux 37, De Cesaris 29, Herbert 25, Danner 24, Sala 19, Palmer 18, Modena 14.

The next race in Spain was won by Palmer which gave him a chance, with De Cesaris with a 4th. Arnoux had a torrid time in qualifying and failed to qualif, it was closing up, Arnoux 37, De Cesaris 32, Palmer 27. The next race was won by De Cesaris with Palmer retiring and Arnoux having another awful time in qualifying. With a race to go it was De Cesaris 41, Arnoux 37. The last race was a bit of a damp squib, Modena won, Gugelmin was 2nd and Martina in th Minardi got his third third. It was a good season with 11 different winners.

(Unrelated trivia, in the US grand prix Danner got a 4th which got him out of reject status and into "You lucky bastard", in the same race using the reverse championship he was also spookely 4th).

BMS Scuderia Italia won and deadbeat team mate Caffi manages 2 2nd places to deadbeat team mate Grouillard single 3rd. Tyrrell had three other drivers with Palmer which limited points a little although Alesi managed a 2nd.

Benetton surprised everyone by their high placing although most of the points were care of Herbert and Pirro. Williams were also a surprise with Patrese winning a race and Boutsen getting the Williams into good 2nd and 3rd place.

Unrelated trivia : Benetton were also 4th in the real championship and scored just a single point more.

Arnoux won the championship with a very good second half of the season, but to be fair it was wide open due to the number of drivers scoring points. After 8 races Modena had won and got 2 other poiums and a minor point, Sala had managed two wins and a minor point, Capelli had got two wins too, Martini had three podiums and Dalmas had a podium and a good bag of points. It stood at Modena 20, Sala 19, Capelli 18, Martini 14, Dalmas 14. Arnoux had 9 points.

Four races later, Arnoux had managed another win and a 2nd and was leading, the others did not do so well, Modena got a single 3rd, Sala a single 4th, Dalmas a single 5th and Martini and Capelli had nothing. Alliot managed 2 2nd places to jump up the table too and Caffi got a few good results too. It was Arnoux 24, Modena 24, Sala 22, Alliot 21, Capelli 18, Caffi 18. The next two races saw Alliot get a win and Modena a 2nd and Sala a 3rd, Tarquini got a few good results to put him in the pound seats. Alliot 30, Modena 30, Arnoux 28, Sala 28, Tarquini 22, Caffi 21. With a race to go Arnoux got his 3rd win of the season and Sala was on the Podium too, it set up an exciting last race with Arnoux 37, Sala 32, Alliot 30, Modena 30.

In qualifying it was close, Alliot was 3rd, Arounx 4th, Sala 6th and Modena 7th. In the race Arnoux was about to overtake Berger but they collided and Arnoux was out of the race, Sala was next when his engine blew, Modena had a mechinical failure and was out, Alliot was near the lead but was feeling a bit fuelish went he ran out of fuel. So the last race ended without any of the leaders scoring. Martini did win his first race of the season, Capelli scored after a 11 race drought, and Boutsen got his 3rd third for the Benetton team. Aryton Senna scored Mclarens first point with a 6th.

Minardi snatch the constructors championship from Larrousse with Martinis win but it was Larrousses for most of the season. Johansson was deadbeat teammate as Ligier could have done better, Johansson getting a single lucky win at the start of the season and was rubbish for the rest of the season. Leyton House were high up with only 5 point scoring races to their name, even Benetton managed 7.

There was really no contest for drivers championship as Fabre won the first 5 races, got 2 more 2nd places, got a DNF in Germany before winning the next two races. However a accident in Italy caused him an injury which mean he struggled with the AGS. Three more races leading to three DNQs meant Fabre retired for the sport. However with 5 races left, his only challenger was Palmer but a 5th place ended his mathmatically hopes.

The Tyrrell drivers of Palmer and Streiff were best of the rest, despite failing to win any races the entire season. Brundle was the best of the Turbo drivers managing to get two wins, first a home win at the British grand prix then at the following race winning in Germany winning a home race for Zakspeed. Dalmas was lucky as with three races to go he scored a total of no points, but got 2 two wins and a 3rd to propel him to 4th.

Constructors Championship.

AGS just held on to winning the constructors championship despite being a single car team with Moreno's 2nd place in the last race of the season in Australia. Tyrrell will be cursing their luck as they failed to get a single win losing out on the championship by 2 points.

Larrousse with Dalmas' spurt at the end gave them third ahead of the turbo Zakspeed cars.

Although Turbo cars were introduced as a way of limiting the speeds that the normally aspirated engines had been approaching it was decided that the NA engines would come back and before everyone would be using NA engines it was decided that the Turbo teams should have their own B league.

It was slightly tighter in the Turbo cup, although not by much as Nakajima got the car home more often then not, racking up the points even if in some races he was miles behind the NA cars. A well deserved champion of the JPJ cup.

Ligier were surprise winners as in the championship they were 5th, but as they finished races which turned from minor points or podiums to wins they snatch the cup from Zakspeed with paydrive Aryton Senna getting so few points meaning Lotus lose out too.

The first three races of the season were strange as Fabi in the Benetton won the first race and was in the lead with 12 points, but could only manage a point and a podium at the last race of the season, Tambay won a race and then had a long drought before getting minor points and two podiums in the last three races and Surer won the third race and scored in the next two races but picked up an injury and retired. 11 different drivers got a win.

After this Palmer took some wins and built up a lead and never looked like being caught, Streiff did well but never won a race but did get a number of podiums through the season to claim 2nd spot. Berg was hired at the tail end of the season and managed some fantastic wins but it was too late for him to challenge. Berger was a surprise getting 3 podiums and ending up quite high in the championship.

Tyrrell fail to score any wins but Streiff and Brundle clock up the points getting 10 podiums on the way, Streiff also managing to get 4 2nd places in a row. Zakspeed would be disappointed with Rothengatter as although he scored a win and a 3rd, that was all he got. Arrows stumble into 3rd with fairly average drives by Boutsen, Danner and Surer. Haas will be disappointed with their placement with a single win by Tambay. Osella got all of their points in the last half of the season with wins by Caffi, Ghinzani and Berg.

Even those reject pay-drivers Mansell, Prost, Rosberg and Piquet all score points, nice!!! :D

I love this championship. At least drivers have to show some sort of skill in real-life, which is finishing races and also managing to qualify!

After 8 races, Ghinzani was in the lead with 30 points but had disagreements with the team and was fired to be replaced with Rothengatter with Ghinzani finding a driver with the less competive Toleman team for the last 6 raecs. In 2nd place was M Winkelhock with 22 points but the RAM team were in trouble and he was also fired before the RAM team folded before the season was out. The highly talented Bellof was 3rd with 17 points but would only do 3 more races before he would be tragicaly killed in the Spa 1000 race. Cheever was on 14 points but would only manage a single podium the rest of the season and even the Arrows of Boutsen and Berger were on 12 points with Brundle on 11.

With 4 races to go Ghunzani was still in the lead, with Brundle getting a win and a number of 4s to climb to 26, Winklehock on 22, Boutsen getting a few podiums to get to 22, Bellof scored one more podium in 3rd to end up on 21 and Berger also racked up the points to be on 21. Rothengatter was not too far behind getting two wins and was on 18 points.

Two races to go and Brundle was on 32 after a podium in Belgium, Rothengatter climbed into 3rd place with anothe win and Berger and Boutsen were not too far behind on 25. The South African GP was boycotted by a few teams and drivers, Renault, Zakspeed and Ligier all not fielding a team or drivers but Brundle won with Boutsen and Berger on the podium with him. The championship was Brundles. Pay driver Prost crept home ni 5th to get his only points of the season.

The battle was for 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. In Belgium it was Rothengatter, Brundle and Martini and in Australia it was
Brundle, Martini and Rothengatter if there was only another few races then maybe Martini would have won for Minardi. Berger was 4th, Johanssen in the Ferrari was 5th adding to his tally of points and Capelli was 6th getting points in his first race.

Tyrrell hung on despite the loss of Bellof with Brundle finding a higher gear to win the Championship and to pile on the points. Arrows struggled to close the gap as neither driver could find the top step, but managed 10 podiums between them. Osella had a championship winning car but struggled with the drivers but despite a single car team ended 3rd.

Alfa Romeo were third after a good win by Cheever and a few podiums and they were best of the rest. New team Minardi did well to finish higher then the other single car teams but the engine is a problem but I think we have a great team in the making.

The Jean-Pierre Jabouille Cup for Turbo drivers is priceless! Hilarious!
"I don't think we should be used to finance (the manufacturers') R&D because they will produce that engine anyway" said Monisha Kaltenborn.
"You will never see a Mercedes using a Ferrari engine or the other way round."
