The "No race winners this season" Alternative Championship!

Post by James1978 »

I know there's lots of these going but I wanted to start this as I put this idea in the voting thread and wanted to start it before anyone took it! :)

Basically what this one is, is all drivers who have won a race during any given season are disqualified from all of that season's results, and every year it starts afresh. The more drivers who win a race in reality, the more get disqualified from that season - last season for instance will be without the Red Bull drivers, McLaren drivers and Alonso.

Driver examples are:

Lewis Hamilton will never been included in this as he's won races in every season he's competed (some people will be pleased about that!). Alain Prost will only be eligible in 1980 and 1991. Jean Alesi will only be disqualified in 1995!

It's basically a salute to drivers who have had very good consistent seasons but maybe not been in the very best car so maybe don't get remembered for it in years to come (such as Rosberg and Kubica in 2010).

Anyway, I'm not going to bother with the 50s and 1960 which featured shared drives as it complicates things, and the Indy 500 (every Indy 500 driver just moves up one place anyway), and start with 1961 which will be coming soon!!

1961

Best 5 scores from 8 races to count, eliminated are Stirling Moss, Wolfgang von Trips, Phil Hill, Giancarlo Baghetti, and Innes Ireland.

Dan Gurney 36 (41) (3 wins, 1 2nd)
Richie Ginther 35 (3 wins, 1 2nd)
Jim Clark 25 (2 wins, 1 2nd)
Bruce McLaren 22 (23) (1 2nd, 4 3rd)
John Surtees 13 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jack Brabham 10 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Tony Brooks 10 (1 2nd, 1 4th)
Jo Bonnier 10 (1 3rd)
Graham Hill 8 (2 4th)
Olivier Gendebien 6 (1 2nd)
Jackie Lewis 6 (1 3rd)
Roy Salvadori 6 (1 4th)
Maurice Trintignant 3 (1 4th)
Cliff Allison 2 (1 5th)
Hans Herrmann 1 (1 6th)
Carel Godin De Beaufort 1 (1 6th)

Is that the first alternative championship win for Gurney? I know he came 2nd and 3rd a lot in the elimination ones!

If it weren't for Schlesser, Berger would have pissed 1988 in this alternative championship.

1982...

Rosberg, Pironi, Watson, Prost, Lauda, Arnoux, Tambay, Alboreto, De Angelis, Patrese and Piquet are out

What leaves us with a mighty fight for the championship title between the likes of Eddie Cheever and Derek Daly...

2003 will have no Ferraris, McLarens, Williamses and Alonso's Renault, so it should be interesting as well.

I wonder when the "No drivers other than HWNSNBM Championship" will be held

I think he won 1965 in you own Backwards Elimination championship. He also wins 1965 in mine (with the medals).

Jarno Trulli is going to destroy the other 11 drivers in 2003.
Jenson Button is going to dominate 2004.

I didn't check the medals one but in Backwards Elimination, he was runner-up to Jim Clark!

1962

Best 5 scores to count, eliminated are Graham Hill, Jim Clark, Dan Gurney and Bruce McLaren.

John Surtees 30 (2 wins, 3 3rd)
Tony Maggs 29 (33) (2 wins, 2 3rd, 1 4th)
Phil Hill 24 (2 wins, 1 2nd)
Jack Brabham 24 (1 win, 2 2nd)
Richie Ginther 20 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Trevor Taylor 12 (1 win)
Ricardo Rodriguez 12 (2 2nd)
Jo Bonnier 11 (1 3rd)
Masten Gregory 9 (1 2nd)
Giancarlo Baghetti 9 (2 3rd)
Willy Mairesse 8 (1 2nd)
Lorenzo Bandini 7 (1 2nd)
Innes Ireland 7 (1 3rd)
Carel Godin De Beaufort 7 (1 4th)
Neville Lederle 3 (1 4th)
Maurice Trintignant 3 (1 5th)
Roger Penske 2 (1 5th)
Jackie Lewis 1 (1 6th)
Rob Schroeder 1 (1 6th)
John Love 1 (1 6th)

Dropped scores claim another vistim in Maggs, he had to drop 2 5th places which cost him the title. Shame as he's nowhere near as well-known as Surtees!!

1963

6 best results from 10 races to count, only Jim Clark, Graham Hill and John Surtees are eliminated.

Richie Ginther 51 (59) (5 wins, 1 2nd)
Dan Gurney 31 (2 wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Bruce McLaren 27 (1 win, 3 2nd)
Jack Brabham 27 (1 win, 2 2nd)
Tony Maggs 19 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Jo Bonnier 16 (17) (1 3rd, 3 4th)
Lorenzo Bandini 14 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Innes Ireland 10 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jim Hall 10 (2 3rd)
Gerhard Mitter 6 (1 2nd)
Jo Siffert 5 (1 4th, 1 5th)
Chris Amon 5 (1 4th, 1 5th)
Carel Godin De Beaufort 5 (1 4th, 1 5th)
Trevor Taylor 5 (1 4th, 2 6th)
Ludovico Scarfiotti 3 (1 4th)
Mike Hailwood 2 (1 5th)
Peter Broeker 2 (1 5th)
Hap Sharp 2 (1 5th)
Maurice Trintignant 1 (1 6th)

Lots of points finishes but no wins in real life mean an easy championship for Ginther here, he even had to drop 2 3rds but it didn't matter.

I must ask how did you hide that so well? When i tried to do on Snake Points it's still sort-of visible without highlighting it!

FWIW, I agree with all of those apart from three!

1986 Johansson
2005 Ralf Schumacher (if No Real Champions is anything to go by)
2010 Nico Rosberg (him and Kubica beat Massa in No Real Champions - this eliminates Webber but adds Schumacher)

I'll bear that in mind for future alternative championships!

1964

Best 6 scores from 10 races, eliminated are John Surtees, Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Lorenzo Bandini and Dan Gurney.

Richie Ginther 38 (47) (2 wins, 2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Bruce McLaren 28 (2 wins, 1 3rd)
Jack Brabham 24 (2 wins, 1 2nd)
Peter Arundell 22 (1 win, 2 2nd)
Jo Siffert 21 (2 wins)
Mike Spence 18 (1 win, 1 4th)
Bob Anderson 16 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Phil Hill 12 (1 2nd)
Tony Maggs 8 (2 3rd)
Innes Ireland 8 (1 3rd)
Jo Bonnier 7 (1 3rd)
Chris Amon 6 (1 2nd)
Maurice Trintignant 6 (1 2nd)
Pedro Rodriguez 6 (1 2nd)
Trevor Taylor 6 (2 4th)
Mike Hailwood 5 (1 4th)
Walt Hansgen 4 (1 3rd)
Giancarlo Baghetti 4 (1 5th)
Gerhard Mitter 1 (1 6th)
Moises Solana 1 (1 6th)

Second in a row for Ginther. His very consistent 1963 and 1964 seasons are exactly the type of season I wanted to reward in this format! Peter Arundell was a driver I didn't know much about before doing this, but he was leading this before his season-ending crash in an F2 event. Also Walt Hansgen (who?) gets a podium!

Arundell gained some note as he finished his first two races on the podium. The next one to do that was certain Lewis Hamilton. Arundell passed away few years ago.

1965

Best 6 scores from 10 races count, Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart and Richie Ginther are eliminated (stopping Ginther getting a possible hat-trick).

Dan Gurney 49 (50) (5 wins, 1 3rd)
John Surtees 37 (3 wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Mike Spence 28 (3 2nd, 1 3rd)
Lorenzo Bandini 24 (28) (1 win, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Bruce McLaren 21 (1 win, 3 3rd)
Jack Brabham 18 (2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jo Siffert 18 (2 3rd)
Denny Hulme 13 (2 2nd)
Jo Bonnier 10 (1 4th)
Jochen Rindt 9 (1 2nd)
Richard Attwood 5 (1 4th)
Pedro Rodriguez 5 (1 4th)
Ronnie Bucknum 3 (1 4th)
Frank Gardner 2 (1 5th)
Paul Hawkins/Bob Anderson/Innes Ireland/Masten Gregory all 1 (1 6th)

Surtees did all the running in the first half of the season, but Gurney charged to his second title with 5 wins in the 2nd half, having been nowhere at half-season!

Graham Hill 27 (1 win, 3 2nd)

Even though my 60s knowledge is rather limited, this is my favourite year yet! :)

1967

Eliminated are Denny Hulme, Jack Brabham, Jim Clark, John Surtees, Pedro Rodriguez and Dan Gurney (6 drivers for 11 races is a lot!!). No changes with possible dropped scores as nobody had a full quota of finishes for either half of the season!

Chris Amon 49 (3 wins, 2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Mike Spence 29 (1 win, 2 2nd)
Graham Hill 27 (3 wins)
Jackie Stewart 18 (2 wins)
Chris Irwin 16 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jo Siffert 14 (2 2nd)
Jo Bonnier 14 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jochen Rindt 13 (1 win, 1 3rd)
John Love 9 (1 win)
Jean-Pierre Beltoise 9 (1 2nd)
Bob Anderson 8 (1 2nd)
Bruce McLaren 7 (1 3rd, 1 4th)
Guy Ligier 7 (1 3rd, 1 5th)
Mike Parkes 6 (1 2nd)
David Hobbs 5 (1 3rd)
Ludovico Scarfiotti 4 (1 3rd)
Jacky Ickx 4 (1 3rd)
Jonathan Williams 4 (1 3rd)
Alan Rees 3 (1 4th)

Very comfortable championship for Amon, even though he won "No Real Champions", he wins with Stewart and Hill in the field! Also John Love who has a feature on the main site wins (almost) his home race, and lots of podiums for rejects (Irwin, Hobbs, Williams and even Guy Ligier)!!!!!!!

Is that the same Alan Rees with 3 points that went on to form Arrows with Jackie Oliver and others?

1968

7 drivers from 12 races to eliminate! (Clark :(, Hill, McLaren, Stewart, Ickx, Siffert and Hulme!)

Pedro Rodriguez 34 (2 wins, 2 2nd, 1 3rd)
John Surtees 27 (2 wins, 1 2nd)
Jean-Pierre Beltoise 26 (1 win, 3 3rd)
Chris Amon 19 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Jochen Rindt 18 (2 wins)
Piers Courage 17 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Jackie Oliver 15 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Vic Elford 15 (2 2nd)
Richard Attwood 14 (1 win)
Lucien Bianchi 10 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Ludovico Scarfiotti 10 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Brian Redman 9 (1 win)
Johnny Servoz-Gavin 9 (1 win)
Dan Gurney 8 (1 2nd)
Jo Bonnier 8 (1 3rd)
Jack Brabham 7 (1 2nd)
Silvio Moser 4 (1 3rd)
Henri Pescarolo 2 (1 5th)
John Love 2 (1 5th)
Hubert Hahne 1 (1 6th)

Nobody finished enough races for the dropped scores to apply, and due to eliminating a large number of drivers and small fields, only 4 6th places were awarded. It was a 3-way fight going to Mexico but Surtees and Beltoise both retired, Rodriguez was 2nd but didn't need to finish! Also quite a few wins for fairly obscure drivers!

1969

Eliminated this time are Stewart, Hill, Ickx, Rindt and Hulme. Again nobody scores enough to get any dropped points!

Bruce McLaren 52 (3 wins, 3 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jean-Pierre Beltoise 49 (2 wins, 3 2nd, 2 3rd)
Jo Siffert 37 (2 wins, 2 2nd)
Piers Courage 28 (2 wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jack Brabham 26 (2 wins, 2 3rd)
John Surtees 12 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Vic Elford 11 (2 3rd)
Pedro Rodriguez 9 (3 4th)
Jackie Oliver 7 (1 3rd)
Chris Amon 6 (1 2nd)
Silvio Moser 5 (1 4th)
Johnny Servoz-Gavin 5 (1 4th)
Richard Attwood 4 (1 3rd)
Pete Lovely 3 (1 5th)
Sam Tingle 2 (1 5th)
John Miles 1 (1 6th)

It was a 3-way scrap for most of the season, Siffert lost gound at the end, and Beltoise could have tied with McLaren if he'd won in Mexico (but lost on tiebreak), but was 2nd behind Brabham.

Pete Lovely (whose name I can't stop laughing at!) gets unrejectified.

John Love 1 (1 6th)
Andrea De Adamich 1 (1 6th)

No Stewart, Andretti, Ickx, Siffert, Gethin or Cevert.

Ronnie Peterson 55 (5 wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Emerson Fittipaldi 31 (2 wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Clay Regazzoni 28 (2 wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)

Reine Wisell 19 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Denny Hulme 17 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Pedro Rodriguez 15 (1 win, 1 2nd) :(
Howden Ganley 14 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Tim Schenken 12 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
John Surtees 12 (2 4th)
Jean-Pierre Beltoise 9 (2 4th)
Graham Hill 8 (2 4th)
Henri Pescarolo 7 (1 3rd)
Rolf Stommelen 7 (2 4th)
Mike Hailwood 6 (1 2nd)
Mark Donohue 6 (1 2nd)
Brian Redman 2 (1 5th)
Jackie Oliver 2 (1 5th)
Gijs van Lennep 1 (1 6th)
David Hobbs 1 (1 6th)

This was always going to be Peterson's given he was runner-up in real life without a win (has anyone else ever done that?)

No. Rubens was winless in 2001 but finished 3rd after Michael and DC. He had wins in 2002 and 2004 when he was 2nd.

Didn't know about 1952 of course!!

1972

Eliminated are Stewart, Emerson Fittipaldi, Hulme, Beltoise and Ickx.

Peter Revson 48 (4 wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Clay Regazzoni 33 (3 wins, 1 3rd)
Chris Amon 31 (1 win, 2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Ronnie Peterson 28 (2 2nd, 3 3rd)
Francois Cevert 27 (2 wins, 1 2nd)
Mike Hailwood 24 (1 win, 2 2nd)
Brian Redman 13 (1 win, 1 4th)
Mario Andretti 12 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Carlos Reutemann 11 (1 2nd)
Andrea De Adamich 10 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Graham Hill 10 (1 3rd)
Tim Schenken 9 (1 2nd)
Howden Ganley 9 (1 3rd)
Carlos Pace 7 (1 3rd)
Wilson Fittipaldi 7 (3 5th)
Arturo Merzario 4 (1 3rd)
Niki Lauda 4 (1 5th) - oh dear!
Helmut Marko 3 (1 4th)
Peter Gethin 3 (1 4th)
Patrick Depailler 3 (1 4th)
Henri Pescarolo 2 (1 5th)
Rolf Stommelen 1 (1 6th)
Jody Scheckter 1 (1 6th)

Fairly comfortable for Revson again, thought he'd be the favourite as he won "No Real Champions". Pleased to see Mike Hailwood gets a win, and also win for Brian Redman, sadly I couldn't get Howden Ganley or Tim Schenken to win a race. The boss of Red Bull is unrejectified, and I didn't even know Depailler and Scheckter competed as early as that either!

1973

No Stewart, Fittipaldi (Emerson not Wilson!), Peterson, Hulme or Revson.

Francois Cevert 87 (9 wins, 1 2nd)
Carlos Reutemann 40 (5 2nd, 2 3rd)
Jacky Ickx 35 (3 2nd, 3 3rd)
James Hunt 33 (2 wins, 1 2nd)
Arturo Merzario 24 (2 wins)
Jean-Pierre Beltoise 20 (1 2nd, 3 3rd)
Clay Regazzoni 20 (1 3rd, 3 4th)
Carlos Pace 18 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Andrea De Adamich 15 (2 2nd)
George Follmer 13 (2 2nd)
Jackie Oliver 12 (1 win)
Mike Hailwood 9 (2 3rd)
Howden Ganley 9 (1 3rd)
Wilson Fittipaldi 8 (1 3rd)
Mike Beuttler 8 (2 4th)
Niki Lauda 7 (1 3rd)
Gijs van Lennep 4 (1 4th)
Chris Amon 3 (1 4th)
Jody Scheckter 2 (1 5th)
Henri Pescarolo 2 (1 5th)
Jochen Mass 2 (1 5th)
David Purley 2 (1 5th)
Nanni Galli 1 (1 6th)
Graham Hill 1 (1 6th)

That's yet another alternative posthomous championship win for Cevert, and it was total domination from him, he had it sewn up after Holland with 5 races left (he had 69 at that stage, joint 2nd were Ickx and Merzario with........22!!). He wouldn't have needed to be driving at Watkins Glen. :(

Reutemann gets runner-up without a win but 7 podiums, James Hunt wins his home race in his debut season, and there are also wins for Pace, Merzario (!) and Jackie Oliver of all people!!

Oh and I also forgot to mention about 1972 - Dave Walker still failed to score even in this format! :)

Eliminated are Fittipaldi, Regazzoni, Scheckter, Lauda, Peterson, Reutemann and Hulme!

Patrick Depailler 45 (1 win, 2 2nd, 4 3rd)
Mike Hailwood 43 (2 wins, 3 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jacky Ickx 37 (4 wins)
James Hunt 34 (2 wins, 2 2nd)
Jean-Pierre Beltoise 29 (2 wins, 1 2nd)
John Watson 29 (2 2nd, 3 3rd)
Carlos Pace 28 (1 win, 2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jean-Pierre Jarier 18 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Graham Hill 18 (2 3rd)
Hans-Joachim Stuck 16 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Arturo Merzario 14 (1 win, 1 4th)
Tom Pryce 13 (2 2nd)
Vittorio Brambilla 11 (1 3rd, 1 4th)
Brian Redman 6 (1 2nd)
Guy Edwards 6 (1 4th)
David Hobbs 5 (1 4th)
Mario Andretti 4 (1 3rd)
Howden Ganley 3 (1 4th)
Rikky von Opel 3 (1 4th)
Henri Pescarolo 3 (1 5th)
Tim Schenken 2 (1 5th)
Helmuth Koinigg 2 (1 5th)
Jochen Mass 2 (1 5th)
Tom Belso 1 (1 6th)
Dieter Quester 1 (1 6th)
Rolf Stommelen 1 (1 6th)

Very unfortunate for Hailwood - he was leading when he had his career-ending crash at the Nurburgring, but it took Depailler until the last race to catch him! (Similar to 1982 in real liffe with Pironi and Rosberg too as Depailler only won one race!!)Ickx would have won it under medals, but he only got one point aside from his wins. 8 different drivers win races, including Jarier and Stuck! Can't believe some points increases from real life - Watson went from 6 to 29, and Graham Hill went from 1 to 18!!

1975

I like this one - 9 different winners in reality, from just 14 races. I decided to disqualify Mass and Brambilla even though their wins were only for half-points.

Also out are Lauda, Emerson Fittipaldi, Reutemann, Hunt, Regazzoni, Pace and Scheckter.

Patrick Depailler 55.5 (3 wins, 4 2nd)
Tom Pryce 39.5 (3 wins*, 2 2nd)
Mark Donohue 31 (1 win, 2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Mario Andretti 29 (3 wins) - he was driving for a profiled reject team as well!!!!
Ronnie Peterson 28 (2 wins, 1 2nd*)
Jacky Ickx 18.5 (1 win*, 1 2nd, 2 3rd)
John Watson 17 (3 3rd*)
Tony Brise 15.5 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Jacques Laffite 13 (1 win)
Alan Jones 9 (2 3rd)
Rolf Stommelen 7 (1 2nd)
Jean-Pierre Jarier 7 (1 2nd*)
Hans-Joachim Stuck 6 (1 2nd)
Wilson Fittipaldi 6 (1 4th)
Harald Ertl 5 (1 3rd)
Gijs van Lennep 5 (1 4th)
Graham Hill 5 (1 4th)
Bob Evans 4 (1 3rd)
Lella Lombardi 4 (1 3rd*)
Brett Lunger 3.5 (1 4th)
Torsten Palm 2 (1 5th)
Arturo Merzario 2 (1 5th)
Chris Amon 2 (1 5th*)
Guy Tunmer 1 (1 6th)

I was hoping 9 eliminated drivers would produce some obscure race-winners but there aren't really any apart from the Parnelli team (though Andretti himself is hardly obscure!), I guess at a push you could say it about Pryce and Donohue. The best news is who gets podiums - Harald Ertl the best facial hair ever, Bob Evans (who?), and even though it was for only half points.............Lella Lombardi!!!!

And there's even a point for South African Guy Tunmer in his one and only race!

1976

No Hunt, Lauda, Regazzoni, Scheckter, Peterson, Andretti and Watson.

Patrick Depailler 76 (7 wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jochen Mass 55 (3 wins, 1 2nd, 4 3rd)
Tom Pryce 48 (2 wins, 2 2nd)
Jacques Laffite 42 (3 wins, 2 2nd)
Alan Jones 26 (3 2nd, 1 3rd)
Gunnar Nilsson 25 (1 win, 1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Carlos Pace 25 (2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Hans-Joachim Stuck 20 (2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Vittorio Brambilla 16 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Emerson Fittipaldi 13 (1 3rd)
Jean-Pierre Jarier 9 (3 5th)
Carlos Reutemann 8 (1 2nd)
Harald Ertl 8 (2 4th)
Jacky Ickx 7 (2 5th)
Chris Amon 5 (1 3rd)
Larry Perkins 3 (1 4th)
Rolf Stommelen 3 (1 4th)
Brett Lunger 3 (3 6th)
Bob Evans 2 (1 5th)
Arturo Merzario 2 (1 5th)
Henri Pescarolo 2 (1 5th)
Renzo Zorzi 1 (1 6th)
Noritake Takahara 1 (1 6th)

And it's three in a row for Depailler, how it took him until 1978 to DQ him from this championship by winning a race in real life I'll never know! But the blue teapot Ligier won races anyway. :)

No Lauda, (Jody) Scheckter, Andretti, Reutemann, Hunt, Jones, Nilsson or Laffite!

Jochen Mass 65 (5 wins, 2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Patrick Depailler 45 (4 wins, 1 2nd)
Hans-Joachim Stuck 42 (2 wins, 2 2nd, 3 3rd)
Vittorio Brambilla 34 (3 2nd, 1 3rd)
Emerson Fittipaldi 33 (2 wins, 2 2nd)
Clay Regazzoni 30 (1 win, 2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Ronnie Peterson 25 (1 win, 1 2nd, 2 3rd)
John Watson 20 (1 win, 2 3rd)
Rupert Keegan 15 (1 2nd)
Jean-Pierre Jarier 15 (2 3rd)
Patrick Tambay 14 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Riccardo Patrese 10 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Hans Binder 10 (2 4th)
Carlos Pace 9 (1 win) :(
Brett Lunger 7 (1 4th, 2 5th)
Patrick Neve 7 (1 4th, 1 5th, 2 6th)
Renzo Zorzi 6 (1 2nd)
Ingo Hoffmann 4 (1 3rd)
Brian Henton 3 (1 4th)
Jacky Ickx 3 (1 4th)
Vern Schuppan 3 (1 4th)
Alex Ribiero 3 (1 5th)
Harald Ertl 2 (1 5th)
Danny Ongais 2 (1 5th)
Kunimitsu Takahashi 2 (1 5th)
Ian Scheckter 2 (2 6th)
Jackie Oliver 1 (1 6th)
Gilles Villeneuve 1 (1 6th)
Kazuyoshi Hoshino 1 (1 6th)

Jochen Mass wins a title!!!! It was remarked on in "No Real Champions" how he came close in 1976 in that, and I thought "Why is that so outrageous? He was the real champion's teammate after all!". DEpailler's reign comes to an end as he retired too much against the more consistent Mass.

No particualry obscure winning drivers, but there are for teams - Ensign with Regazzoni and Fittipaldi with Emerson of course!

There are podiums for Renzo Zorzi, Ingo Hoffmann and Rupert Keegan of all people, and lots of unrejectification and points for obscure drivers!

1978

No Andretti, Peterson, Reutemann, Lauda, Depailler (never realised it took him that long to win a race!) or Villeneuve.

And it's mighty close!

John Watson 58 (4 wins, 2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jacques Laffite 58 (3 wins, 3 2nd, 2 3rd)
Jody Scheckter 45 (3 wins, 2 2nd)
Emerson Fittipaldi 45 (2 wins, 1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Patrick Tambay 29 (2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Alan Jones 26 (1 win, 1 2nd, 2 3rd)
James Hunt 25 (2 wins)
Riccardo Patrese 25 (1 win, 2 2nd)
Didier Pironi 23 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Clay Regazzoni 11 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Brett Lunger 8 (1 3rd)
Vittorio Brambilla 7 (1 3rd)
Hans-Joachim Stuck 6 (1 2nd)
Bruno Giacomelli 6 (2 4th)
Derek Daly 5 (1 3rd)
Jochen Mass 5 (1 4th)
Jean-Pierre Jabouille 4 (1 3rd)
Jean-Pierre Jarier 3 (1 5th)
Rolf Stommelen 3 (1 5th)
Rene Arnoux 3 (1 5th)
Hector Rebaque 3 (1 5th)
Nelson Piquet 2 (1 5th)

Amazingly, Watson just beats Laffite on countback, and amazingly, Scheckter also has to rely on countback to beat Fittipaldi for 3rd. Strange I thought Fittipaldi did two-thirds of cr*p-all after leaving McLaren!! Also wins for Arrows and Williams in their first seasons. And Brett Lunger is the latest reject on the podium!

1979

No Scheckter, Villeneuve, Jones, Regazzoni, Laffite, Depailler or Jabouille.

4 best scores to count from each "half" of the season, of course!

Didier Pironi 42 (2 wins)
Carlos Reutemann 40 (4 wins)
John Watson 40 (1 win)
Rene Arnoux 37 (4 wins)
Jean-Pierre Jarier 35 (1 win)
Mario Andretti 32 (1 win)
Jochen Mass 22 (1 2nd)
Nelson Piquet 14 (1 win)
Niki Lauda 12 (1 win)
Elio De Angelis 11 (2 3rd)
Emerson Fittipaldi 11 (2 4th)
Jacky Ickx 9 (1 2nd)
Patrick Tambay 7 (1 4th)
Riccardo Patrese 6 (1 3rd)
Hans-Joachim Stuck 5 (1 4th)
Keke Rosberg 4 (1 3rd)
Geoff Lees 4 (1 3rd)
Derek Daly 4 (1 3rd)
Ricardo Zunino 4 (1 3rd)
Hector Rebaque 4 (1 4th)
Jan Lammers 4 (2 5th)
James Hunt 1 (1 6th)

Absolutely cracking season. 5 drivers had a chance going into the last race! Arnoux who was out of contention won, but Pironi sealed it with 2nd. Strangely, Reutemann had a perfect 4 wins in the first half of the season, and Arnoux did likewise in the second half, but their respective other halves, frankly, sucked!!! Reutemann also had to drop two podiums in the first half of the season, oops! Also very odd that Lauda's win was in his last race before he retired for the first time. Lees and Zunino are the latest rejects to be on the podium, and Lammers is also unrejectified!

1980

No Jones, Piquet, Reutemann, Laffite, Pironi, Arnoux or Jabouille (so that's three complete teams taken out and only the second Brabham taking part).

Nobody has to drop any scores either!

Elio De Angelis 39 (4 wins)
Gilles Villeneuve 38 (5 2nd, 2 3rd)
Jean-Pierre Jarier 33 (2 wins, 2 2nd)
Alain Prost 29 (3 2nd, 2 3rd)
Jochen Mass 26 (2 wins)
John Watson 25 (2 wins, 1 3rd)
Keke Rosberg 24 (1 win, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Riccardo Patrese 22 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Derek Daly 21 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Emerson Fittipaldi 16 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Mario Andretti 16 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Bruno Giacomelli 13 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Jody Scheckter 13 (3 4th)
Hector Rebaque 10 (1 3rd)
Marc Surer 9 (1 3rd)
Ricardo Zunino 6 (3 5th)
Rupert Keegan 5 (1 4th)
Clay Regazzoni 3 (1 4th)
Eddie Cheever 1 (1 6th)

Very close season with lots of different winners (Bruno Giacomelli wins a race for heavens sake!!!!). I thought for a long time Gilles was going to be champion (in his only full season's appearance in this) without winning a race, he was 5 ahead of Jarier and 8 ahead of De Angelis going to Watkins Glen, but De Angelis won to pip him by a point as both Villeneuve and Jarier retired.
