The "No race winners this season" Alternative Championship!

1998
No McLarens, M. Schumacher or D. Hill!
Eddie Irvine 103 (8 wins, 3 2nd)
Jacques Villeneuve 58 (2 wins, 2 2nd, 4 3rd)
Heinz-Harald Frentzen 51 (1 win, 4 2nd, 2 3rd)
Alex Wurz 48 (2 wins, 2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Giancarlo Fisichella 47 (2 wins, 4 3rd)
Ralf Schumacher 35 (1 win, 3 2nd)
Jean Alesi 30 (1 2nd, 3 3rd)
Johnny Herbert 13 (3 4th)
Rubens Barrichello 10 (1 2nd)
Pedro Diniz 5 (1 4th)
Mika Salo 4 (1 3rd)
Jarno Trulli 4 (1 5th)
Shinji Nakano 3 (3 6th)
Jan Magnussen 2 (1 5th)
Olivier Panis 1 (1 6th)
Esteban Tuero 1 (1 6th)
Toranosuke Takagi 1 (1 6th)
Verstappen and Rosset fail to score.
Dare I say it......boring? Irvine is pretty dominant, but Villeneuve wins a tight fight with his teammate and the Benttons for 2nd. Nothing particularly unusual to report otherwise.

1999
No McLarens, Ferraris (apart from the part-time Salo), Frentzen or Herbert.
Ralf Schumacher 94 (7 wins, 3 2nd, 1 3rd)
Rubens Barrichello 63 (4 wins, 1 2nd, 3 3rd)
Giancarlo Fisichella 36 (2 wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Alex Wurz 34 (1 win, 1 2nd, 3 3rd)
Jarno Trulli 32 (1 win, 1 2nd, 3 3rd)
Damon Hill 31 (4 2nd, 1 3rd)
Mika Salo 27 (1 win, 1 2nd, 1 3rd) - 5 for BAR, 22 for Ferrari, including the three podiums
Jean Alesi 20 (2 2nd)
Olivier Panis 17 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Pedro Diniz 15 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Marc Gene 12 (3 4th)

Toranosuke Takagi 5 (1 4th)
Ricardo Zonta 4 (2 5th)
Pedro De La Rosa 3 (1 4th)
Luca Badoer 3 (3 6th)
I'm surprised how many times Ralf wins here actually, I know he had a good season without winning a race in reality, but didn't expect him to do that well. The Benettons do a lot better than I would have expected too. And a win for Salo with Irvine not around! And Gene ahead of Zanardi and Villeneuve!!!

Re: The "No race winners this season" Alternative Championsh
2001
Everyone from the top 3 teams is eliminated - except Barrichello, shame he couldn't have won a race!!
Rubens Barrichello 126 (12 wins, 1 2nd) !!!!!!!
Nick Heidfeld 44 (1 win, 2 2nd, 4 3rd)
Jacques Villeneuve 40 (1 win, 1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Jarno Trulli 39 (1 win, 3 2nd, 2 3rd)
Kimi Raikkonen 39 (1 win, 2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jean Alesi 27 (1 2nd, 1 3rd) - 16 for Prost, 11 for Jordan
Eddie Irvine 21 (3 2nd)
Heinz-Harald Frentzen 21 (1 2nd, 2 3rd) - 19 for Jordan, 2 for Prost
Giancarlo Fisichella 20 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Olivier Panis 20 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Pedro De La Rosa 15 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Jenson Button 12 (1 2nd)
Jos Verstappen 9 (1 3rd)
Luciano Burti 4 (1 5th) - 2 for Jaguar, 2 for Prost
Ricardo Zonta 3 (1 4th)
Tarso Marques 1 (1 6th)
Fernando Alonso 1 (1 6th)
Plain and simple domination! Great fight for second though. Just imagine how good it could have been without Rubens! It's left to 5 different drivers to pick up a win each when Rubens fails - including Kimi Raikkonen in his first season!

Re: The "No race winners this season" Alternative Championsh
Had to check where did Rubens finish 2nd...found out it was Belgium behind Fisichella.
Re: The "No race winners this season" Alternative Championsh
I don't think Rubens was ever in a position to win a race that year (and therefore be eliminated) - even in Austria when he let Michael through at the end they were still both behind Coulthard. Whenever he came 2nd in a Ferrari 1-2 Schumacher needed to win for the championship (Malaysia, Monaco, Hungary). Think Hakkinen would have resisted him at Indy too had his engine not gone.

No Schumachers, Coulthard or Barrichello
Juan Pablo Montoya 108 (9 wins, 3 2nd)
Kimi Raikkonen 56 (5 wins, 1 2nd)
Jenson Button 45 (1 win, 3 2nd, 3 3rd)

Allan McNish 7 (3 5th)
Mark Webber 5 (1 4th)
Pedro De La Rosa 4 (1 5th)
Alex Yoong 1 (1 6th)
Almost as dominant for Montoya as it was for Barrichello '01! Kimi has the speed to challenge but only finished 6 races! Button (Brazil), Trulli (Monaco) and Irvine (Monza) win a race each when the top two fail. Massa did a lot better than I would have expected given ghe was on the reject podium of the year! And Sato on the podium for his home race.
Been really looking forward to the next one though!!

Re: The "No race winners this season" Alternative Championsh
Sorry I couldn't wait!!!
2003
No Ferraris, McLarens, Williamses (apart from Gene's one-off appearance at Monza), Alonso or Fisichella
Jarno Trulli 89 (5 wins, 3 2nd, 2 3rd)
Mark Webber 72 (4 wins, 2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jenson Button 72 (3 wins, 2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Cristiano da Matta 68 (1 win, 2 2nd, 1 3rd, 1 4th, 7 5th!!!!)
Nick Heidfeld 54 (6 3rd)
Heinz-Harald Frentzen 51 (2 wins, 1 2nd)
Olivier Panis 43 (4 2nd)
Jacques Villeneuve 39 (2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Antonio Pizzonia 24 (3 4th)
Ralph Firman 23 (1 3rd)
Jos Verstappen 21 (1 3rd)
Justin Wilson 13 (1 4th)
Marc Gene 10 (1 win)
Nicolas Kiesa 8 (1 6th)
Takuma Sato 6 (1 3rd)
HWNSNBM 4 (1 5th)
It wasn't quite the Trulli massacre it could have been given his equipment (the new points system contributed to this too). He only won 5 times and it took him until the penultimate race to clinch it. He was even behind Webber and Button in the mid-season when he had a bad patch. Da Matta gets Toyota's first win in Spain and is elsewhere very consistent - how anyone manages to come 5th 7 times I'll never know. The Saubers also do very well.

Re: The "No race winners this season" Alternative Championsh
The other thing I meant to add about 2003 was that with the top 8 scoring points, only a 20 car field and 8 drivers eliminated, there were only 5 races where all 8 points positions were awarded!!!
2004
No Ferraris, Trulli, Raikkonen or Montoya
Jenson Button 134 (10 wins, 3 2nd, 1 3rd)
Fernando Alonso 102 (5 wins, 4 2nd, 2 3rd)
Giancarlo Fisichella 75 (3 2nd, 1 3rd, 3 4th, 5 5th)

Christian Klien 20 (1 3rd, 3 6th)
Antonio Pizzonia 14 (2 4th)
Nick Heidfeld 14 (1 4th)
Cristiano Da Matta 13 (1 3rd)
HWNSNBM 10 (1 4th)
Ricardo Zonta 6 (1 6th, 1 7th, 1 8th)
Jacques Villeneuve 6 (1 6th, 1 7th, 1 8th)
Timo Glock 5 (1 4th)
Marc Gene 5 (1 5th)
Pantano and Bruni fail to score.
The Button massacre! Dread to think what he'd have won by under pre-2003 points! Fisichella comes 3rd by dint of lots of mid-points positions. Indy was great - Sato won, Panis was 2nd, DC was 3rd and HWNSNBM unrejectified himself by coming 4th!
Zonta and Villeneuve were impossible to separate but Zonta's next best result was a retirement.

2004

Was thinking of doing this in 2 parts, but as Ralf had won "No Real Champions", I didn't really see the point as this shouldn't be any great surprise. He scored in every race apart from two, and one of those was Indy when Zonta took his place anyway!
Trulli hit the self-destruct button though - with 4 races to go he had a 12-point lead over his teammate but only managed 1 point from the last 4 races! Barrichello shouldn't really have been in it but got a 10-point bonus due to Indy, and Button should really have been able to defend his title but he only scored 5 points before Indy and always had too much to do - but he did get most wins.
But all the top 4 had a chance going to China!
Also you can see here how much better Massa was than Villeneuve - in reailty it was very close between them!
No Alonso, Raikkonen, M. Schumacher, Fisichella or Montoya.

The second Super Aguri drivers fail to score.
McLaren almost match their 1988 real-life feat - they won all but two races (Indy where they both crashed out on the first lap, and Magny-Cours where they were both beaten by Ralf Schumacher). The only other different between this and 1988 is that due to Montoya's sacking, there's no in-house fight for the championship - but the combinded total for Montoya and De La Rosa was enough for 2nd overall! Barrichello gets a massive collection of podiums but without a win.
No Renaults, Ferraris or Button!
Kimi Raikkonen 116 (10 wins, 2 2nd)
Rubens Barrichello 80 (5 2nd, 4 3rd)
Nick Heidfeld 62 (1 2nd, 5 3rd)
Jarno Trulli 59 (1 win, 3 2nd)
Ralf Schumacher 56 (1 win, 2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Juan Pablo Montoya 46 (3 wins, 2 2nd)
Pedro De La Rosa 44 (3 wins, 2 3rd)
David Coulthard 43 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Mark Webber 31 (2 3rd, 2 4th)
Nico Rosberg 30 (1 3rd, 1 4th)
Jacques Villeneuve 29 (1 2nd, 3 4th)
Vitantonio Liuzzi 22 (1 4th, 1 5th)
Christian Klien 20 (1 3rd)
Robert Kubica 19 (1 2nd)
Scott Speed 19 (1 5th, 2 6th)
Christijan Albers 7 (3 7th)
Tiago Monteiro 5 (1 6th)
Takuma Sato 4 (1 5th)
Robert Doornbos 3 (1 7th)

Re: The "No race winners this season" Alternative Championsh
2007
This actually has some semblance of reality - becuase the only winners were McLaren and Ferrari drivers, both teams could have been excluded for Spygate (Ferrari due to Stepney's role), this is what would have happened!!
Nick Heidfeld 118 (8 wins, 2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Robert Kubica 88 (3 wins, 5 2nd)
Heikki Kovalainen 77 (2 wins, 1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Giancarlo Fisichella 62 (1 win, 2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Nico Rosberg 58 (1 win, 1 2nd, 4 3rd)
Mark Webber 37 (1 win, 2 3rd)
David Coulthard 36 (2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jarno Trulli 34 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Alex Wurz 32 (2 2nd)
Jenson Button 25 (1 2nd, 1 4th)
Ralf Schumacher 25 (1 3rd, 1 4th)
Rubens Barrichello 20 (1 5th, 1 6th, 6 7th)
Sebastian Vettel 15 (1 win for Toro Rosso, 1 4th for BMW sauber)
Takuma Sato 11 (1 4th, 1 5th)
Vitantonio Liuzzi 10 (1 3rd)
Scott Speed 4 (1 5th)
Adrian Sutil 4 (1 5th)
Anthony Davidson 4 (1 7th)
Kazuki Nakajima 3 (1 6th)
It was indeed the Heidfeld massacre. I expected Kubica to be much closer than 30 points behind! Nick had it sewn up by the end of the European races. Webber is (deservedly I feel too) ahead of Coulthard! Vettel manages to win in China in the only part-season he's eligible in this championship. And Honda don't look anywhere near as bad in this as in reality either!

Giancarlo Fisichella 8 (1 6th)
Adrian Sutil 3 (1 7th)
The Super Aguris failed to score in their 4 races.
Heidfeld does even better than in 2007, not only did he easily get most wins but he scored in every race! I thought more than 6 drivers would have won actually. But everyone not in a Force India or Super Aguri gets at least one podium. Funnily enough, Brazil had a Toyota 1-2 despite them struggling on dry tyres at the end!

2009
No Brawns, Red Bulls, Hamilton or Raikkonen.
Nico Rosberg 86.5 (1 win, 6 2nd)
Timo Glock 69 (1 win, 4 2nd*, 1 3rd)
Fernando Alonso 69 (1 win, 2 2nd, 5 3rd)

Robert Kubica 47 (1 win, 1 2nd, 4 4th)
Giancarlo Fisichella 35 (1 win, 1 4th) - 23 for Force India including the win, 12 for Ferrari

Nelson Piquet Jr 10 (1 5th)
Vitantonio Liuzzi 4 (1 5th)
Romain Grosjean 2 (1 7th)
Jaime Alguersuari 1 (1 8th)
*Half points for Malaysia
Rosberg is by far the most consistent. Incidentally, his two main challengers both got injured - Massa was only 2.5 points behind when he had his Hungary crash, and Glock was only 5.5 points behind, with Toyota in good form, when he had his Japan crash. Trulli wins on medals but retires too often. But 10 drivers winning races show how open it was when you take the top two teams out (and the two most recent real-life champions). Force India even get two wins!
Other things of note: it takes until the last two races of the year for BMW to win a full race, and Kobayashi gets two podiums in his two appearances, if it hadn't have been for Heidfeld in Abu Dhabi.......
No Brawns, Red Bulls, Hamilton or Raikkonen.

And to get right up to date!
2010
No Red Bulls, McLarens or Alonso.
Nico Rosberg 296 (7 wins, 3 2nd, 3 3rd)
Robert Kubica 272 (3 wins, 6 2nd, 3 3rd)
Felipe Massa 264 (5 wins, 4 2nd)
Michael Schumacher 206 (3 wins, 2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Rubens Barrichello 156 (1 win, 2 2nd)
Adrian Sutil 138 (4 3rd)
Kamui Kobayashi 103 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jaime Alguersuari 85 (1 4th, 1 5th)
Nico Hulkenberg 84 (3 3rd)
Vitaly Petrov 83 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Vitantonio Liuzzi 77 (4 4th)

Pedro De La Rosa 31 (1 4th)
Nick Heidfeld 29 (1 3rd)
Heikki Kovalainen 13 (1 7th)
Jarno Trulli 4 (1 8th)
Karun Chandhok 3 (3 10th)
Lucas Di Grassi 2 (1 9th)
Timo Glock 2 (1 9th)
Bruno Senna 1 (1 10th)
Yamamoto and Klien fail to score.
Bet everyone thought that would be Massa didn't they? He had too many races where he only just scraped into the points, where Rosberg was more often best of the non-championship contenders and took most wins. Much less winners than in 2009, only 5 in total. Though there were two tantalising results for a couple of favourites from this site - Kobayashi was only 4 seconds off the lead at his home race and was rapidly catching Schumacher at the end. And also Petrov was only a "Fernando is faster than you" message from winning in Hungary, as he was 2nd to Massa who would have got eliminated without that message......
Kovalainen is easily best of the new team drivers.
2010

Re: The "No race winners this season" Alternative Championsh
Going through all the alternative championships I did and update them for this year!
2011
Same drivers as last year eliminated!
Felipe Massa 312 (7 wins, 5 2nd, 1 3rd)
Nico Rosberg 261 (2 wins, 7 2nd, 3 3rd)
Michael Schumacher 220 (6 wins, 2 3rd)
Adrian Sutil 175 (3 2nd, 2 3rd)
Paul Di Resta 149 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Vitaly Petrov 137 (1 win, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Kamui Kobayashi 130 (1 win, 1 3rd)
Jaime Alguersuari 112 (1 2nd, 3 3rd)
Nick Heidfeld 107 (1 win, 1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Sebastien Buemi 100 2 3rd)
Sergio Perez 88 (2 3rd)
Rubens Barrichello 59 (1 4th, 2 6th)
Pastor Maldonado 28 (2 6th)
Bruno Senna 25 (1 5th)
Heikki Kovalainen 11 (1 8th)
Jarno Trulli 10 (2 8th)
Jerome D'Ambrosio 3 (1 9th)
Pedro De La Rosa 2 (1 9th)
Vitantonio Liuzzi 1 (1 10th)
Glock, Chandhok, Karthikeyan and Ricciardo all failed to score
On paper this was always going to be Massa winning but he took until mid-season to establish himself in the lead, after Valencia there were 6 drivers within 10 points (Massa, both Mercedes, both Renaults and Kobayashi) - but the latter three fell away spectacularly, even adding Heidfeld and Senna's points together puts them behind Petrov. Interesting how Rosberg beats Schumacher on points, but Schumacher scores 6 wins to Nico's 2. And Force India beat Renault (and indeed Ferrari who only have one car!)
BTW, if it hadn't have been for Vettel's gearbox problem in Brazil, Webber would have WALKED this championship!

Sorry to bump this thread, but James1978, would you mind if I updated this for the 2012 season? I was reading through some of the old forum stuff today and thought this was a pretty interesting idea.

I'm sorry - I actually compiled it but in my infinite wisdom, forgot to post the results!
Here they are anyway:
2012
Felipe Massa 313 (7 wins)
Nico Hulkenberg 225 (1 win, 4 2nd, 4 3rd)
Paul Di Resta 211 (1 win, 2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Romain Grosjean 209 (5 wins, 3 2nd, 2 3rd) - every time he scored was a podium!!
Kamui Kobayashi 200 (3 wins, 2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Sergio Perez 185 (2 wins, 3 2nd)
Bruno Senna 154 (3 2nd, 1 3rd)
Daniel Ricciardo 147 (1 3rd, 2 4th)
Michael Schumacher 144 (1 win, 5 3rd)
Jean-Eric Vergne 118 (5 4th)
Heikki Kovalainen 32 (1 7th, 3 8th)
Vitaly Petrov 29 (1 6th, 1 7th)
Timo Glock 28 (2 6th)
Charles Pic 15 (2 7th)
Jerome D'Ambrosio 4 (1 8th)
Narain Karthikeyan 2 (1 9th)
De La Rosa failed to score!!
This was Grosjean's to lose at first but an increasingly erratic 2nd half of the season meant he did - Massa was nowhere at first but he absolutely had it nailed from Silverstone onwards. Interesting to note Kobayashi ahead of Perez, and Schumacher last of all the established teams bar Vergne.
Sorry DNQ, I did actually forget to post it becuase I actually feel it's not a massively realistic championship like some of the ones on here are (such as the elimination ones, No Real Champions, Young Drivers etc). Top drivers just make sporadic appearances with no real science to it. Wonder if some obscure driver called Lewis Hamilton actually makes his debut in 2013, the world hasn't heard of him yet - and when will that young sensation from a part-season in 2007, Sebastian Vettel, make a comeback??

No worries, nice to see the results. Who knows, maybe reigning WDC Felipe Massa may hang up his helmet for good this time.

Amazing that the cucumber outscored the Docklands Light Railway here!
