Thanks mate. :)

Anyway, it's time for another one of the Mad Uncle's Mad Race Reviews:

Clipsal 500 - Race 2

The Sunday race started off as sedately as the first race did, with the top four of James Courtney, Steven Richards, Russell Ingall and Will Davison holding station at the front of the field for the first 30-odd laps. Behind the top 4, the racing was as intense as one would expect from a V8 Supercar race but once the field settled into a natural rhythm, passing proved to be difficult, except when the field came across the struggling cars of Garth Tander and Craig Lowndes, both of whom were limping around the back of the field with considerable damage.

That all changed on lap 31, when the safety car was brought out for an incident between Jaime Whincup and Jonathon Webb, as the Paul Weel Racing driver collected the defending champ when the engine in the Triple 8 Falcon decided it was bored of trolling around at the back end of the top 20 and blew up. The resulting safety car put the field back in touch with the leaders, and led to the madhouse racing that caused the second caution of the afternoon a few laps later. As the midfield were busy battling away with each other, Jason Bargwanna tried to lap Lowndes at the fearsome turn 8, ended up clouting the second Triple 8 car and sending the former three time champion into a frightening accident, bringing Triple 8's miserable weekend to a merciful early end.

As Courtney and Richards led away at the second restart, Mark Winterbottom took full advantage to take 4th from Davison just before the pitstop phase, as both Tim Slade and Mark Skaife came in relatively early compared to the field. It turned out to be a monumental error as both got trapped a lap down when the third safety car came out for debris at the Senna chicane. The safety car ended up scrambling the rest of the field as well, as suddenly Shane van Gisbergen and Rick Kelly came from nowhere to be first and second, while the likes of Davison, Courtney and Richards ended up well outside the top 10 in the order.

Gisbergen lead with authority from what turned out to be the final restart of the day, with Rick Kelly close behind and Todd Kelly defending 3rd place from Winterbottom. As the top two streaked away from the field, it looked like the Kiwi superstar was going to become the youngest ever winner in V8 Supercar history, before he fell off the road at the final corner on the penultimate lap while trying to lap Tander for the third time that afternoon, handing the win to the jubilant Kelly. Winterbottom meanwhile had found his way past Todd to finish on the podium for the first time since switching to Holden.

Behind them, Jason Bargwanna and Paul Dumbrell both made up for horror Saturday runs to finish 5th and 6th, ahead of Steven Johnson and Russell Ingall, who was another victim of the 3rd safety car. Greg Murphy brought the second Tasman car home in 9th, ahead of Lee Holdsworth in the Valvoline Cummins cars. Of the victims of the final SC, Will Davison ended up in 12th place, while polesitter Courtney could only muster up 18th by race end. Steven Richards' afternoon meanwhile only got worse after the safety car, as he slumped to an abysmal 22nd place finish behind teammate Jorg Bergmeister.

I am happily surprised by Russell Ingall's drives in the last couple races with a 5th and an 8th place. Firman has shown the ability to pass cars and have a decent race pace but his qualifying pace seems to hinders him (Race one started 27th and finished 20th, Race Two started 25th and finished 23rd). Zukanovic will be the enduro driver for Firman given the recent performance which has been rather lackluster but respectable given how underpowered the Japanese GT cars are compared to V8 Supercars.

Well, a dodgy start with rewards in the second race. I'm pleased that we can fight the higher positions on the board.

Since team managers won't have too much to do until the Christchurch round is over, I might as well see how many rounds I can get done within the next month or so before the hard slog towards the HSC.

Australian Grand Prix Challenge Race 1

To say this race was a Triple 8 benefit would be unfair to the chasing pack, as the group from 3rd down to 9th ran with the two Vodafone Falcons of Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes until the final few laps when they started getting the elbows out. Of the two Vodafone cars, Whincup lead most of the way before Lowndes made a lunge on lap 12. Whincup took the lead back a lap later, but it was a short-lived lead as Lowndes dummied JDub on lap 16, which was as far as the race for the win was concerned. Garth Tander eventually won out in the hard slog for 3rd place by overtaking (read: barging) Mark Winterbottom out of the way with two laps to go. Behind Tander was new championship leader Russell Ingall, Steven Johnson, an irate Frosty, Alex Davison and Rick Kelly in that 9th place. Jorg Bergmeister ended up with his second top 10 results of his V8SC career in 10th, after overtaking the WOW Racing machine of Paul Dumbrell late in the race.

The Paul Morris Racing cars show better race pace than qualifying with the race results so far in the weekend being finishes of 4th and 28th while starting 6th and 30th although it was really a sinking Patrizi and Fiore who benefited Ralph today. We even had the bottom step of the podium until Tander barged through, but for a lower budget team even 4th is a strong run.

Australian Grand Prix Challenge Race 2

Compared to race 1, the Saturday race of the Grand Prix Challenge was a more straightforward event as far as the two Triple 8 cars were concerned. Craig Lowndes got the jump on teammate Whincup at the start, and from thereon in, the two controlled the race to the tune of a dozen seconds by race end. Behind the leaders, Steven Johnson took a distant third place, and the lead in the drivers' championship from Russell Ingall, who finished behind Garth Tander and Mark Winterbottom. Further down the field, Michael Caruso was one of the real movers in the field, as he muscled his way into 14th place by the time the checkered flag fell, while Dean Fiore made up for the abysmal race 1 showing with a fighting 24th place in race 2.

Michael Patrizi has been sacked by Ford Rising Stars and replaced by Dean Canto. Tom Walkinshaw will surely be pleased. Patrizi will be retained by Ford as an enduro driver.

Greg Murphy Racing would like to offer David Besnard the opportunity to drive in the enduros.

No money is on the table at the moment, but may be negotiable if that's what motivates him!

Australian Grand Prix Challenge Race 3

The paddock woke up to a cold, wet and miserable Sunday morning at Albert Park, which meant the fans were in for a prospect of an exciting V8 race. The rolling start didn't fail to disappoint, as the field went through a fruit machine in the first few laps as the drivers tiptoed around in the treacherous conditions. The likes of Jason Richards and David Reynolds were big winners out of the rolling start, while James Thompson dropped nearly a dozen spots in the space of a lap. Up front, Craig Lowndes had lost the start to both Jamie Whincup and Steven Johnson, and from there had to work hard to make his way back into the lead of the race by lap 8. However, teammate Whincup was having none of it, as he took the lead back a few laps later, and held on for a comfortable win over Lowndes. Behind the Triple 8 duo, Johnson couldn't keep up with the leaders, and eventually fell down to 7th behind Mark Winterbottom and Rick Kelly, wet weather specialist Shane van Gisbergen, and Garth Tander, who just held on to 3rd place for the round behind the Triple 8 duo. Will Davison, Russell Ingall and Greg Murphy rounded out the top 10, which meant that Johnson extended his lead in the championship to 8 points.

As agreed on the chat earlier, consider it done and done. Canto will cost 150k for the rest of the season, and Patrizi will be kept on as the enduro driver.

No money is on the table at the moment, but may be negotiable if that's what motivates him!

Besnard is seriously considering the offer but will wait until the Brisbane Cup in June before he comes to a decision.

I'm currently planning to do at least part of the Falken Tasmanian Challenge this weekend, but in order to encourage more part-time entries to make the trip abroad to New Zealand, the grid size for Pukekohe has been bumped up to 36 entries, bringing it into line with the round at Raupuna Park the following weekend.

Falken Tasmania Challenge Race 1

It was a wild affair for the Saturday race at Symmons Plains, as drivers were willing to take risks that they may not have taken at the previous round at Albert Park. Alex Davison epitomised this point by barging past Steven Johnson a few laps into the event, and held onto it for the next twenty-odd laps, before being repassed by Johnson just as the first yellow flag came out as Jason Bright found himself stranded on track and pointing the wrong direction. This proved to be the beginning of Davison's downfall, as an embarrassing accident on the restart brought out the safety car. Two further yellow flag periods followed, one for debris and one for the spun Jason Richards, which led to a dash to the line as both the green and checkered flags were shown. Johnson managed to hold on to the win from the Triple 8 duo of Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup. James Courtney clocked up his best result in 4th, ahead of Fabian Coulthard, Todd Kelly, Lee Holdsworth, Garth Tander, Jorg Bergmeister and David Reynolds. After running much of the event in the top 10, Dean Canto was one who got caught out by the late restarts, as he slipped to an eventual 13th place finish, while the likes of Russell Ingall, Mark Winterbottom and Will Davison were unable to make much progress through the highly-competitive and tight pack.

The race 2 report will be up later today, and the race 3 report will be up tomorrow. But before then however, James Rosenberg Racing would like to announce their part-time entry into the V8s for 2009 with the Glenford Tools #47 BF Falcon. Two-time New Zealand V8 champion John McIntyre will drive the car for the rounds the team enters for 100k, while Glenn Seton has been signed on as an enduro driver for 40k.

Yeah, I thought I'd just add another part-time car just for teh lulz :P

Falken Tasmania Challenge Race 2

Compared to the brawl that was race 1, the first Sunday race was a fairly tame but still quite entertaining affair, with many hard but fair fights throughout the field. After leading for most of the race, Steven Johnson was passed by the Triple 8 duo in consecutive laps, with Jamie Whincup ahead of teammate Craig Lowndes. While there was talk of potential team orders in the Triple 8 camp, Roland Dane decided to let their guys race to the end, which was all the incentive Lowndes needed to steal the win from Whincup with just five laps to go. Behind them, the two Dick Johnson cars of Steven Johnson and James Courtney finished 3rd and 4th, ahead of Garth Tander. David Reynolds scored a career-best 6th place after a messy final lap, as Dean Fiore collided with several other cars at the back of the field on the penultimate lap who were trying to avoid the slowing Tony D'Alberto, leading to mass confusion as many cars trying to limp back to the finish and others tried to avoid debris that was scattered on the track. Fabian Coulthard finished 7th of Rick Kelly, Lee Holdsworth and Dean Canto. A special mention should go to Walkinshaw Performance, as both cars managed to retire on the same lap with different mechanical failures.

Falken Tasmania Challenge Race 3

If there ever was a race that delivered massive expectations only to falter miserably, this was it. Compared to the rolling start at Albert Park, this start was rather more mundane. Steven Johnson continued his career-best form with an early lead before he, along with then third-placed Garth Tander, fell off the road at turn 1 on lap 5, handing the lead to a surprised James Courtney. In fact, he was so surprised that he left the door open at the hairpin for Craig Lowndes to nab the lead from him. With the heavens threatening to open however, Lowndes' lead was short-lived, as Courtney came back at him a few laps later to retake the lead, which was as far as the battle for the win was concerned. Eventually, Lowndes also lost second place to Jamie Whincup, but was still able to hold on to the round win. The threat of weather never eventuated, which left Lee Holdsworth as best of the rest in 4th place, ahead of Rick Kelly and Tander. Johnson mad no progress after his early off in 7th ahead of the recovering Russell Ingall, Greg Murphy and the ever-impressive Dean Canto, who is making the most of what could be his last crack at being a full-time V8 Supercar driver.

To be fair to Slade, he was screwed over in both races at Adeliade by the SC, and by all rights he should have finished in the top 20 in race 3 at Symmons Plains before the suspension collapsed on his car.

Right but I didn't expect him to be last of all the full timers after three meetings. Just think I might as well get some money from a pay driver for that kind of performance. We'll see what happens at Pukekoe. I hope to see at least one top 20 from him.

I'd pursue Slade for the debut of a satellite team run on the funds of Paul Morris Racing named Action Racing (Marcus Zukanovic is part owner in this deal) if Slade is released.

As the largest V8 field in years motored their way into Pukekohe for the first of the two back-to-back New Zealand events, there was much anticipation for the 36 lap race on Saturday, followed by two longer 43 lap events on Sunday. Qualifying didn't fail to disappoint, as we had one of the more jumbled-up grids in recent times, with Russell Ingall taking just his second career pole position for Supercheap Auto Racing. Alongside him will be James Courtney, with Fabian Coulthard the best of the Kiwis right behind them in the SP Tools Falcon. Other positive surprises included Dean Canto continuing to pull off miracles in the ex-FPR BF in 9th, Jonathon Webb putting in a career-best effort for PWR in 11th, and Tim Slade responding to the pressure from Brad Jones with a magnificent 13th in the BOC Commodore. On the other side of the coin, we had the second DJR car of Steven Johnson stranded in 14th, while neither Todd Kelly, Michael Caruso or the two Fujitsu Falcons of Jason Bright and David Reynolds were able to get 'hooked up' to the track at all. By far the biggest surprise however was defending champion Jamie Whincup finding himself all the way down in P22 and with a lot of work to do over the next three races in order to stay in touch with the championship leaders.
