Pre-Season Test 1-Barcelona Weather- cool, overcast at times

The first shots of the 2000 F1 Championship were fired today as all the teams arrived at the Circuit de Catalunya for the first of 3 pre-season test sessions. It was no surprise to see Messrs Hakkinen and Schumacher duking it out at the head of the field as they have done for the past two seasons- what was a surprise what the gap between that pair and third placed man Frentzen. Another surprise was the turn of speed shown by the Arrows'- Montoya and Verstappen 4th and 8th quickest respectively, although doubts remain as to whether this is indicative of their true pace. Irvine impressed in the Williams, posting the 5th quickest time, and Villeneuve rounded off the top 6.

My team's pace is quite good as hinted by Villeneuve, but it could be better still .

Irvine could score some podiums. This is going to be a tight battle fo third in the WCC

If the Jag can just find about 0.25 in performance then we can be within a real chance of getting Podiums this year

Yes, he brings 2m with him. However, due to the late nature of his signing, he won't be able to drive in the second test. (Which, due to my social plans being kyboshed, is now going to be run this evening, as opposed to tomorrow. Rejoice!)

Pre-season Test 2 - Barcelona Weather- Scorchio!

The sun came out for the second day of testing, resulting in todays times being a good couple of seconds quicker than yesterdays. McLaren and Ferrari really underlined their superiority over the rest of the field, annexing the top 6 positions on the timesheets with alarming ease. Irvine and Villeneuve once again showed good pace, which bodes well for their new employers, with Ralf Schumacher in the Sauber also making huge progress. Further back, Barrichello dragged the Prost out of the bottom 10, and Minardi also appeared to have made some progress. Not a lot, but some.

Pre-Season Test 3 - Barcelona Weather - Cornetto weather

For the first and last time in pre-season we had the full complement of drivers, as BAR's newly signed test driver Christijan Albers got his first taste of F1. The Dutchman didn't really show anyone what they'd been missing however, as he was nearly 2 seconds off the pace of teammate Trulli. The usual suspects stayed at the front, with Hakkinen the only driver to break 1:22. Elsewhere, Irvine continued to impress, and Heidfeld went well, beating Villeneuve.

Looks like its going to be a close season betweem Mclaren and Ferrari. I suspect ferrari have a slight edge as they are not running a rookie.

Hot dog, Jordan have at least the 5th most competitive car on the grid! Barring possible reliability problems we have no reason to target podiums, potential victories and 3rd-5th in the constructors.

In reality there were many teams which had a car capable of taking 3rd. Jordan had pace in qualifying but not excellent race pace or reliability. Williams had a similar pace but were much more reliability and thus had the advantage. Benetton had an OK car but most of their good results were down to attrition. BAR and Arrows had cars which were mega on fast tracks but were nowhere on slower circuits, with Arrows having fluctuating pace and unreliability even worse than that of Jordan.

Following a silly season like no other, with only 2 drivers staying on at their 1999 teams, the first season of the new millennium could well be full of surprises!

Ferrari

2. Jenson BUTTON
Following three near-misses on the Drivers Championship, the men from Maranello have opted for a complete clean-out on the driving front, with one double Champion replaced by a double Champion, and their long serving British no. 2 replaced with a British no. 2. Hakkinen is widely regarded as the only man who can consistently challenge Schumacher and with the confidence of back-to-back titles, must fancy his chances, especially after a promising pre-season. Button, whilst lacking in raw speed at the moment, will adapt no doubt, and will almost certainly feature on the podium in his debut season.

McLaren
3. Michael SCHUMACHER
4. Heinz-Harald FRENTZEN
Following back-to-back drivers titles, what bigger statement of intent could McLaren make other than to sign arguably the most complete driver in F1's history? Yes, Schumacher conceded defeat on his Ferrari adventure, and shuttled off to McLaren, followed by highly-rated compatriot Frentzen. Having seen the pace of the McLaren, both drivers can realistically dream of wins, and Schumacher that elusive third title.

Jordan
5. Jacques VILLENEUVE
6. Nick HEIDFELD
After an impressive 1999, the plucky Irish team will certainly be looking to keep that momentum going into 2000. The signing of former Champion Villeneuve will no doubt have got tongues wagging in Canada, but its the signature of the highly-rated Heidfeld that's really caught the eye of most observers. One of 4 rookies, the quiet German will be looking to impress, and he will have the tools as the Jordan has looked quick, if not particularly reliable, in pre-season. Both drivers will be looking for regular points, with the occasional podium, as they look to consolidate 3rd in the Constructors championship.

Jaguar
7. Jean ALESI
8. Marc GENE
The famous marque returns to top-line motor racing following Ford's purchase of Jackie Stewart's eponymous team. Expectations were initially high following the signings of the mercurial Alesi and competent Gene, but pre-season showed that, for all their money, it wouldn't be a winning return to F1, with neither driver able to crack the top 10 on any of the 3 days. However, Alesi is experienced enough to help develop the car and nab good points when they're on offer, and Gene has pace as well.

Williams
9. Johnny HERBERT
10. Eddie IRVINE
It looks like being a transition year for the Grove side, with their new BMW engines and an experienced driver line-up that most likely last too far into the future. Of course, with their experience, Herbert and Irvine can certainly develop cars, and despite both being cast as Schumacher's whipping boy at various times of their careers, they both still have race winning pace left in them. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we'll see either of these two on the top step as the Williams, although quick, lacks that killer edge to it and Williams could well find themselves stuck in the tight midfield for another season.

Benetton
11. Giancarlo FISICHELLA
12. Mika SALO
It looks like being another average season for the Enstone based team. A quick look at their pre-season times would indicate a battle in the lower half of the field; however both Salo and Fisichella have praised the chassis. Both Fisichella and Salo have proven their worth, so if Benetton do fail spectacularly, you won't be able to blame the drivers, but in all honesty its hard to see beyond another season of midfield anonymity.

Prost

15. Pedro DE LA ROSA
Another season, another turmoil for the French team who in the space of four years, have endured more dips and troughs in their form than most teams do in a decade. Following a reasonable 1999, hopes were initially high for Prost, and with the talented Barrichello on board, people were wondering if Prost could return to their 1997 glory days. A quick glance at the timing sheets would reveal not though; Barrichello having to use all his ability to drag the car above 20th doesn't bode well for them. Reliability also looks poor, and this looks like a worrying season for France's national team.

Sauber
16. Ralf SCHUMACHER
17. Olivier PANIS
Sauber have always been regarded as the quiet ones in the pitlane, picking up small points while others floundered. This year however, hopes are high following the arrivals of Ralf Schumacher and Olivier Panis, both of whom are quick and know how to get to the podium. Despite the car not being one of Leo Ress' best, Schumacher has impressed, challenging Jordans and Williams' in pre-season. Panis has taken longer to acclimatise, but his ability is unquestionable, and when their two drivers click, you can expect points from them.

Arrows
18. Juan Pablo MONTOYA
19. Jos VERSTAPPEN
One of the real shocks of the off-season was reigning CART champion Montoya's decision to up sticks and sign for Arrows. The Colombian has undoubted speed, but his workrate is questionable and that could hurt him. One man who can't be accused of not putting in the effort is Verstappen. He returns to the team he left in 1996 and, although not quite on Montoya's pace, still looks reasonably quick. Again, points will be expected from this pair.

Minardi
20. Mark WEBBER
21. Pedro DINIZ
Another season, another new beginning for the Faenza squad. This time, their new beginning looks questionable at best, with a small mountain of sponsors gold offset by the shaky driver line-up. Talented Australian Webber did enough for Mercedes in the endurance races last year to prove to Minardi that he has the talent to succeed, but of course F1 cars are a completely different kettle of fish. In the second car is pay-driver extraordinare Diniz, who although not as bad as some would like to say he is, is certainly not the man to push a team up the grid. A season of battling the Prosts awaits.

BAR
22. Ricardo ZONTA
23. Jarno TRULLI
Last seasons disaster story, BAR have altered their approach for 2000. Out goes figurehead Villeneuve, in comes highly-rated Trulli. No-ones entirely sure what to make of the team for this season; Trulli has been consistently quick, whereas Zonta has been amongst the Prosts and Minardis at times. Really, in the hands of Trulli at least, they should at least grab some points this time.

Btw, don't expect race sessions every day. I've a lot more work on my hands than I bargained for, so progress will probably be not as quick as you all would like. However, I'll try and get at least one race per week done

In recent years Albert Park has been a McLaren track, and once again the two silver cars found themselves up at the pointy end of the field. Schumacher made the most of his car to get pole, with Frentzen third; Hakkinen snuck in between them to place his Ferrari on the front row. Heidfeld, Alesi and Montoya all impressed in getting their respective grid positions, while both Villeneuve and Button will be disappointed. Both Saubers got into the top 10, just ahead of the two Benettons. Gene and Verstappen on row 7 will both be upset to be so far behind their teammates, who share row 3. Williams had their worst qualifying session in living memory, with Irvine and Herbert down in lowly 15th and 17th positions respectively, and at the back we find the usual suspects from BAR, Prost and Minardi.

Australia race

The season got off to a brilliant start with an attrition and error filled race at Albert Park.

Following a poor start from Schumacher, Hakkinen snuck past his rival and stayed there all race, thanks in part to the strategic brains of Ross Brawn. Frentzen, on a 3 stop strategy, showed good pace, and was a shoo-in for 3rd before his engine gave up on him, elevating Button, who made the most of attrition, to the podium. Villeneuve spent multiple laps trying to force a way past the Brit before slowing to keep the engine in one piece. Ralf Schumacher drove a fairly quiet race and will be happy with 5th, as will Johnny Herbert with 6th. Fisichella was set for 6th initially, but in the closing stages an impatient Trulli made a hamfisted attempt at an overtake, taking Fisichella out on the spot, and forcing Trulli to limp back to the pits for repairs, dropping him behind Herbert. Finally, three laps down, Diniz rounded off the finishers.

Heinz-Harald Frentzen picked up his third career pole position at Interlagos, narrowly beating team mate Schumacher and Hakkinen in a tight session. Button made it onto row 2, with Irvine and Heidfeld rounding out the top 6.
