Takagi's F1 game - Britain race up!

Post by takagi_for_the_win »

Yep, as previously threatened, I have decided to resurrect my patented pen and paper F1 management game. The year is 2000, and to usher in a new millennium in motor racing, all 11 Formula 1 teams have decided to usher in new management as well. All 11 teams have long since had their engine and sponsorship deals wrapped up, but the driver contracts are yet to be decided. Are you up to the task of taking your team to glory?

Teams current budget
West McLaren Mercedes- 27,450,000 -Salamander
Marlboro Scuderia Ferrari- 30,450,000 -peteroli34
Benson and Hedges Jordan Mugen- 18,750,000 -good_Ralf
HSBC Jaguar Racing- 18,600,000 -Freeze-O-Kimi
Compaq Williams BMW- 19,000,000 -roblomas52
Mild Seven Benetton Playlife- 11,750,000 -Ataxia
Gauloises Prost Peugeot- 20,500,000 -Rated
Sauber Petronas- 8,250,000 -Collieafc
Orange Arrows Supertec- 6,250,000 -pasta_maldonado
Telefonica Minardi Fondmetal- 17,750,000 -kevinbotz
Lucky Strike BAR Honda- 27,250,000 -andrew

Were we a bit hasty there Ralf? Never mind these alternative championships are really fun so it's forgivable.

Weren't you Williams in 1990 or was it in another alternative Championship you've competed in

Right, well that's the team sign-up done and dusted; now we move on to the fun (or really, really head-bangingly frustrating) stuff.

First up is the driver sign-up. You can name as many drivers as you want, as I'll be using an RNG to decide who goes where. To prevent any confusion, could you lay out your driver choices as so:

Driver name/Wage/Status within team (Lead driver/equal status/second driver/test driver)/contract length (anything up to 3 years)

Bear in mind that some drivers will bring sponsorship with them; if you want to know how much a driver will bring (if any), don't be afraid to ask! :) Also, bear in mind that over the course of the season, you may want to upgrade your car or have some private testing (although there will be 3 free FIA-sanctioned tests over the course of the season), so don't splurge all your money on your drivers.

Driver 1 - Heinz-Harald Frentzen (2.5m) for 3 years
Driver 2 - Jacques Villeneuve (4m) for 2 years

If not
- Juan Pablo Montoya (3m) for 2 years

- Stéphane Sarrazin (1m) for 2 years

Test driver 1 - Allan McNish (1m) for 2 years
Test driver 2 - Jenson Button (0.5m) for 1 year

Or I'd be happy to run a tyre/engine supplier deal, when that gets introduced.

Driver offers for the first seat
Michael Schumacher/10 million/Lead driver (3 years)
Mika Hakkinen/7.5 million/Lead driver (3 years)
Rubens Barrichello/4 million/Equal status (2 years)
Heinz-Harald Frentzen/4 million/Equal status (2 years)
Giancarlo Fisichella/3.5 million/Equal status (2 years)

Driver offers for the second seat (Frentzen will be equal status regardless; the rest will also be equal status unless either Hakkinen or Schumacher is signed)
Heinz-Harald Frentzen/3 million (2 years)
Jenson Button/500k
Giancarlo Fisichella/2.5 million
Nick Heidfeld/500k
Jean Alesi/1 million

Test driver offers
Scott Dixon/300k
Olivier Panis/1 million

I'd also be interested to see what kind of sponsorship the above drivers would be able to bring, if possible.

Benetton's Plans:'

We plan on giving our race drivers equal status; it's important we get as many points as possible on the board.

We'd like to retain Giancarlo Fisichella, and we hope a £5m contract offer on a two-year deal will curry his favour. To partner him, we will issue bids for the following drivers:

Heinz-Harald Frentzen (2 years) - £5m
Olivier Panis (1 year, possible 1 year extension if he does well) - £4m
Mika Salo (1 year, possible 1 year extension if he does well) - £3m
Nick Heidfeld (2 years) - £2.5m

For our official reserve driver, we'll promote young talent. So, we'd like to extend our offers to...

Fernando Alonso (1 year) - £1m
Sébastien Bourdais (1 year) - £1m
Mark Webber (1 year) - £1m

Having had a quick skim through the list, here is a quick list of how much a driver will bring

Ricardo Zonta- 2m (couldn't find evidence of personal sponsorship on his BAR, but I'd imagine some shady Brazilian business man would give him some wonga)
Pedro de la Rosa- 6m of lovely shiny Repsol money
Pedro Diniz- 8m of Parmalat and various other companies
Esteban Tuero- 2m (various piecemeal deals)
Toranosuke Takagi- 5m of PIAA's frankly misguided cash
Shinji Nakano- 2m of scraped together funds
Gaston Mazzacane- 5m from PSN
Laurent Redon- 1m gained from playing an accordion on the streets of Paris, with a small cardboard sign saying "I'm English, give me money and I'll go back home"
Christijan Albers- 2m from various Dutch companies (the JVC sponsorship didn't turn up til later apparently)
Tarso Marques- 5m of PSN money (yes, he wasn't sponsored by them in real life, but I'm a creature of whim.)
Luciano Burti- 3m of various seedy South American druglords money
Marc Gene- 5m of Telefonica cash

Salamander and pasta, I'll have a look at the rest of your possible money men at a more convenient time (i.e. not half one in the morning)

Okay, picture this if you will. The year is 2000, and fresh from their thrashing in 1999, BAT and Honda have gone with new management to bring them success. Said management decides to try and hire an 18 year old Spaniad who has done one year of car racing in Formula Nissan, and a 20 year old Finn who has done a grand total of 13 open-wheeler races. And between those two drives, management decides to spend over 6 million dollars, which is over 20% of the year's budget.

Yeah, seems legit.

Jean Alesi (4m)

Test driver 1: Pedro De La Rosa (6m sponsorship money)
Test driver 2: Fernando Alonso (800k)

Maybe steamrolling everyone in FC is for the greater good after all...

Seeing stuff like this would make my job there much easier for a start :P

Williams is a team that demands victories so therefore the team need the best drivers.

Does listening to a dog licking its balls get you excited?

That's between me and my internet service provider.

So you're blowing half your budget on two drivers that may respect each other but won't get along in a team that's notoriously bad with driver management, a car that's no match for the Ferrari or the McLaren, and with an engine that's barely seen a track let alone been races? Loving the logic there, champ.

Those backup choices are absolutely stellar as well. You should be commended for your efforts.

Your not forgetting this is an alternative season Wizzie? Where Takagi will do whatever he wants in it?

Which means he could just as easily make the BMW engine a handgrenade for the lulz, no? ;)

And even if the cars are based on their real life 2000 counterparts, which I suspect it is, no driver on earth can make up a second deficit from the Williams to the Ferraris and McLarens. Might as well go for two solid hands like Ralf Schumacher and Fisichella who can do a solid job for a fraction of the cost and save the rest of the money for development.

Forget it man, just let them bankrupt themselves out of sheer incompetence. When 2000 sees McLaren steamroll everyone because we're the only team anywhere near the front with a sensible driver lineup, then they might get the picture.
