The 1935 Thread

Post by LucaPacchiarini »

Good Evening Gentlemen and Gentlewomen,

this is the merry old 1935 Thread, in which us educated upper class Gentlemen can discuss in harmony the latest racing news, far from the madding crowd.

I purchased my daily copy of The Times this morning, and I was delighted to find this mostly unexpected piece of news:

Tazio Nuvolari has beaten the powerful german cars on the Nurburgring circuit ! :o
For how long will this portentous man continue his marvellous form?
What do you Gentlemen think?

I find that mass media is too weak for me to follow international motorsports on my little easily forgotten Free State here on the edge of the Atlantic. Thus, it is with deepest regret that I admit a lack of knowledge on the escapades of Nuvolari and his comrades. Saying that, however, I wish him well.

Good evening Gentlemen,

Here in Spain we haven't much time to care about motorsport. Last week:
-We had 25 worker strikes,
-12 churches were burnt,
-There were 21 street fights between far-left and far-right groups,
-19 estates were assaulted by masses of peasants,
-3 coups d'état were attempted by the military.

The government is completely overwhelmed and elections have been scheduled for February 16, 1936. Let's hope a new government can restore peace and order in the country, but I'm not holding my breath.

I sincerely hope that the post office won't suffer any attack, so that I can read your next telegrams.
Go home, Bernie Ecclestone!

haha, I'm sorry to be a bit unserious, but if people can keep this thread going with "news" from 1935 and then onwards. Like, today people do the news from where they are the 7th January 1935 and next year, it will be from January 1936, this can be a fantastic thread to follow! But maybe I'm just wierd!

Sorry to nitpick, but you've got the wrong year - Zeppelin LZ129, otherwise known as the Hindenberg, first flew in March 1936.

I am sincerely sure that the Union of Soviet Socialistic Republics will hold their non-aggression pact with us with utmost respect, which is a friendly gesture indeed.

Regarding the matter of automobile sports, I am disappointed with that a Norwegian was the hastiest in the last year's Eläintarhanajot with that blasted Alffa Roomeo of his, although I am sure that Karl Ebb will take revenge with his German Mercedes-Benz automobile. After all, it is rumoured to produce the power of over two hundred horses.

Nuvolari has done it again Gentlemen with his win at the Coppa Ciano at the Montenero Circuit in Livorno. It will be most interesting to see how the German powerhouses Auto Union and Mercedes respond to this latest run of victories for Tazio.

Dammit Mario....

I had the years wrong. I thought it was in service in '35 and crashed in '36. I was off by a year in both respects.

That Campbell chap showed us his latest Bluebird speed record motor car outside his workshop at Brooklands today. The car is very different from the last time we saw it and Campbell will be leaving for America shortly to have another stab at the Land Speed Record, on the sands of Daytona Beach.

William Lyons of SS Cars is reportedly negotiating with the directors of Sunbeam to purchase the company. Lyons and the SS Cars company find themselves in the curious situation of needing a new name for their cars because of the unfortunate Nazi connotations of the SS name. By purchasing Sunbeam he would rather unsportingly, although some might call it pragmatically, be acquiring instant heritage and prestige.

I, being the proud German and party member that I am, take great offense in calling "SS" an "unfortunate connection" and I must require you to state a formal apology to all Germans participating in discussion at this otherwise very enjoyable forum, for otherwise I think I will be forced to report a violation to the leading personnel. ... something wrong?
But disregarding this unfortunate outburst of yours, I am rather interested in the upcoming Swiss Grand Prix and hope for a win for the very popular Auto Union driver Bernd Rosemeyer to make the people proud.

However, me being a Norwegian guy, I'm looking forward to the olympics in Munchen next year, I think we have a good football-team, maybe we can surprise.
Oh, and a strange guy who calls himself Vidkun Quisling have started a new political party, I don't think that will succeed.
We are also the proud host of the first Grand Prix race this year, even though it is a non-championship, we are looking forward to the Norwegian Grand Prix. After the success of last years GP on Lake Mjøsa, we are hosting a race on Bogstad,- a lake between our Capital Oslo, and the city of Bærum. Hoping to see some fast cars on the lake!

Hi, mortals. I'm He Whose Name Shall Not Be Mentioned. You are all behaving like a bunch of morons, taking over and claiming your own territories you don't by any means own. I must advise you: if you don't stop all this crazy demeanour you will all run into a big war that will have important consequences in your future. And, by the way, watch out for Enzo Ferrari. That guy seems like another Italian idiot fiddling around, but in the future he'll take motor racing by storm and form a powerful group of people that will dictate the fate of the sport. Have a good day.

Well done my Camerata Klon! We shall display the technological and human power of the Axis!
Although in my opinion Tazio will once again beat Rosemeyer, Caracciola, Lang, Brauchitsch and obviously also the rather insignificant Dick Seaman. With a surname like that... he belongs more to sailing races.. that's all the Albionics can do, after all.

By the way, I just received a telegram with the result of the Grand Prix of Norway...

It seems it was an ice race, the first Grand Prix of this new season.
Over 25000 spectators were cheering and trembling in awe at this dominant win for the glorious Italian Empire

Results:
1 Widengren (Alfa Romeo Monza 2.3L) 50:54.5
2 Ebb (Mercedes-Benz SSK 7.1L) + 2:25.5
3 Rüesch (Maserati 8CM 3.0L) + 3:34.5
4 Isberg (Bugatti) + 4:33.5
5 Bjørnstad (Alfa Romeo Monza 2.3L) + 5:53.5
6 Alm (Ford Special) + 8:19.5
7 Johansen (Ford) + 10:02.5
8 Bryde (Singer) + 10:22.5
9 Thorsell (Chevrolet) + 13:57.5

My godness! the power of our Alfa Romeo cars is so great that we can win even if the driver is some unknown guy from Scandinavia!

I'm so joyous at the sole thought of our flag waving in the boreal regions!!!

Reports are coming in from Bexleyheath of a 4 year old boy, who has somehow co-erced all his friends into giving him all their sweeties to allow them to play with their toy cars in the playground.......

More details will follow presently; although we understand his name is Bernard.....

I've just received this telegram and it is with supreme delight that I rejoyce at the sole thought of the flag of the Italian Empire flag waving in the Pirenaic Regions!

The GP of Pau has been held on February the 24th.
Not valid for the European Championship, but of capital importance nonetheless.

Results:
1 Nuvolari (Alfa Romeo Tipo B 2.9L *) 2:38:19.8 (2:38:12.8?)
2 Dreyfus (Alfa Romeo Tipo B 2.9L *) + 26.2
3 Soffietti (Maserati 8CM 3.0L) + 3:50.2
4 Falchetto (Maserati 8CM 3.0L *2) + 3:52.2
5 Brunet (Maserati 8CM 3.0L *2) - 1 lap
6 Cazaux (Bugatti T51 *3) - 3 laps
7 Léoz-Abad (Bugatti T51) - 3 laps
8 Mlle. Hellé-Nice (Alfa Romeo Monza 2.3L) - 5 laps
9 Delorme (Bugatti T51) - 5 laps
DNF Lehoux (Bugatti T51) 32 laps mechanical
DNF Étancelin (Maserati 8CM 3.0L) 20 laps oil pump
DNF Veyron (Bugatti T51) 13 laps overheating
DNF Zanelli (Nacional Pescara) *4) 12 laps brakes

Report

It had been raining at Pau the night before the race but when the cars lined up the conditions were perfect. The Ferrari Alfa Romeo cars of Nuvolari and Dreyfus were the favourites and they faced Maseratis from Étancelin (in his old 8CM as the 6C-34 was not ready), Falchetto, Soffietti and Brunet. Rüesch had got stuck at the customs and was a non starter. Nuvolari's new Alfa with reveresed rear suspension proved to be fastest in practice with a time of 1:53
Just as expected the Ferrari cars took control over the race with Nuvolari leading from Dreyfus. The only driver being able to challenge them was Étancelin but he had to retire with a broken oil pump. At half distance Dreyfus led Nuvolari by 2 seconds with Falchetto third, one minute behind. Five laps from the finish Nuvolari passed Dreyfus and the Alfa Romeo drivers then cruised home to give Nuvolari a straight win in his comeback race for Ferrari. Four minutes behind them two Maseratis were fighting for third place and the cars actually collided once they had passed the line.

What a marvellous victory this must have been.. the power of the Italic man on our supreme machinery! Ah!
