I'm just wondering if F1 Rejects, decided to give a reject of the year award to drivers, or other things, that were before 2000. Who would you choose for what year?

Here's a few of my ones:
1999
3. Jean Alesi (The pace was there but kept lurching from disaster to disaster)
2. Alex Zanardi (For whatever reason was soundly thrashed by teammate Schumacher)
1. BAR (Several hundred million dollars and nothing to show for it)
1998
3. Williams (The fall from grace was dramatic and could do nothing about it)
2. Ricardo Rosset (There were 5 DNQs by drivers during the season. All of them by Rosset)
1. Prost (From a hugely competitive 1997 season to scoring a solitary point in 1998)
1997
3. Heinz Harald Frentzen (Was utterly thrashed by Villeneuve and nearly beaten by DC and Alesi to 2nd in the championship)
2. Ford (Pyrotechnic shows to be found in Detroit)
1. Lola (Self-explanatory really)

In 2000 Pedro Diniz came 2nd with Gaston Mazzacane 3rd, see http://web.archive.org/web/20020818004158/http://f1rejects.crosswinds.net/centrale/2000/review/index.html for the full list. In 2008 Fisichella came 2nd with Sutil 3rd, listen to the season review podcast http://www.f1rejects.com/podcasts/081217.mp3 for the full list. Neither year is "missing", they just can't be found in the same place as all the other years.

Out of curiosity I looked through some of the team reviews in 2000 from that archive page...

To be fair, though, the vast majority of external observers, and even a fair chunk of those within the sport, thought that Peter Sauber was taking a colossal risk. After all, at the time he was signed, Kimi had only completed 23 races in junior racing series like Formula Ford and Formula Renault, and the FIA, unsurprisingly, were very reluctant to issue a Super Licence to a (then) relatively unknown 21 year old rookie.
He was certainly the least experienced driver in the modern era to be offered a seat - even the current test driver line up is more experienced than Kimi was - so, based on what little was known about Kimi before that weekend, it looked like Peter Sauber was taking an absurdly large risk. As it was, Kimi did manage to cope, and put in a very good performance, but it could have easily backfired on Sauber.

I'll put in my choices for 1995-1999, as I've been watching these races on the net over the last couple of weeks.
1995
3. Williams drivers (The amount of mistakes made during the year which cost the team both titles)
2. Nigel Mansell (Pathetic really. See 'Hang Up The Keys' award)
1. Jean-Denis Deletraz (Two performances which have gone down as legend in F1 Rejects folklore)
1996
3. Ferrari F310 (Heaps of retirements, I remember Irvine having 8 straight retirements between Spain and Italy)
2. Ukyo Katayama (Was this really the same driver from two years ago?)
1. Forti/Shannon (Need I say more)
1997
3. Stewart SF-01 (8 classified finishes out of 34)
2. Michael Schumacher (The stupidness at Jerez, which saw him disqualified from the championship)
1. Mastercard Lola (Making a fine effort to become the worst team ever to contest)
1998
3. Olivier Panis (I know the Prost was a shitbox, but he really was anominious during that season)
2. British American Tobbacco/Tyrrell (Resulted in Ken Tyrrell leaving and an awful, sad final season for Tyrrell)
1. Ricardo Tosser (Need I say more)
1999
3. Luca Badoer's gearbox at the 1999 European Grand Prix (

2. Arrows (The malarky with that Prince Malik fellow, and an absolute shitbox for a car)

Re: "Reject of the Year" for years that were not covered.
1999
1) BAR Supertec (Nuff said)
2) Benetton Playlife (What happened to Fisi after Canada and Wurz after 98?)
3) Arrows (I'm sorry, I just couldn't put Zanardi, not after his far worse Champ Car return 2 years later. Plus the A20 was just the A19 with orange paint and Repsol labels!)
1998
1) Ricardo Rosset (I don't recall Tora Takagi failing to qualify at any point in his entire F1 career!)
2) Esteban Tuero (Called up by Minardi just to make up the numbers and that's just what he did)
3) Prost Peugeot (As Tyrrell was on their last legs anyway and their successor achieved nothing the following year, it has to be Prost, Alain's 1st attempt at building an F1 car instead of slapping his name on a Ligier and just a twice lapped 6th in the Spa demolition derby to show for his efforts and not to mention Panis still not fully recovered from his leg injuries)
1997
1) Master Card Lola (Where do you think Rosset got his DNQ tendencies of the following year from?)
2) Gianni Morbidelli (Came back to F1 just so he could keep injuring himself)
3) Jan Magnussen (I think Stewart GP and Schuey have had enough votes as it is, plus the Dane did nothing to prove his 94 Brit F3 season was no fluke)
1996
1) Forti (With Diniz off to Ligier and the 107% coming in, 96 was a prolonged case of going, going, gone)
2) Giovanni Lavaggi (You'd've thought there would not be any non-qualifiers once Forti were gone)
3) Williams Renault (Sacking Damon Hill was the biggest mistake of Frank Williams' life)

Re: "Reject of the Year" for years that were not covered.
1990
3) Brabham - Good 1989 season fails to transfer over to the new decade, and team scores only 2 points with Modena at the first race.
2) Onyx - Seemingly future champions stab themselves repeatedly, and die of course.
1) Life - When you are somehow 6 minutes off the pace against the faster Pre-Qualifier, destroy the career of a potential points scorer, and can't go any faster with a solid Judd motor. You FAIL!
1991
3) Ferrari - Championship contenders fail to get anywhere close in 1991. And when you have someone like Alain Prost call your car a truck, there's something bloody wrong.
2) Footwork - Steadily going downhill ever since their peak in 1988. Disastrous Porsche partnership, with equally bad results with a Ford powerplant.
1) Coloni - Well, 15 DNPQ's out of 15 is fun, ain't it?
1992
3) Ligier - So you score 6 points and 7th in the WCC. Well, that's fine and dandy considering 3 DNQ's and no points in 1991. But you have Renault engines ffs. You should be doing much better than that.
2) Yamaha - Great job! You just brought Jordan plunging down to earth.
1) Andrea Moda - Do I need to say anything?
1993
3) Ivan Capelli - Say all you want. Yes, he is a fantastic driver, and yes his confidence was dealt a huge blow after Ferrari. But you're still a racing driver, and being totally outdone by your teammate, and DNQ-ing in a solid car, is no excuse. Sorry Ivan.
2) Michele Alboreto - Outdone by rookie teammate Badoer for most of the year, and DNQ's 5 times. Oh dear.
1) Lola - "What is this s**tbox!?"
1994
3) Benetton - You should be trying to challenge for the WCC, not trying to set 1 of your drivers on fire...
2) Lotus - Seemingly on the upswing back to greatness, and with highly-rated Mugen motors, 1994 was an utter disappointment.
1) Pacific - A car with the rigidity of paper, qualifying only because of others misfortune, and claiming they would be faster than Simtek. Not good for a Junior Formulae Winner.
1995
3) Williams - You have the best car on the field, with arguably the best designer of all time, with the best engine in the field, and you gift the titles to Benetton.
2) Tyrrell - Crazy what's its name suspension fails miserably, and all the progress made in 1994 is lost.
1) Pacific - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEME-XwZfIA
1996
3) Sauber - Much more expected with new V10 works units from Ford.
2) Martin Brundle - Comprehensively outpaced by Rubens. Retirement well justified.
1) Forti - To quote Jamie and Enoch; "First plenty of cash with bad car; then decent car with no money"
1997
3) Arrows - So much for the title winning car, Tom. A total waste of Damon's time.
2) Ford - One of their engines blows up before you can even blink, one of them is unspectacular, and the other powers the ROTY and one of the most farcical outfits ever.
1) Lola - Congrats Lola, you deserved this one. Ends any hope of Vincenzo Sospiri in F1, ruins Ricardo Rosset's reputation (though Tyrrell inflicting far more damage). And you claim that you will outpace Stewart, and claim you have windtunnel testing. "And all I can say to that is b****hit".
1998
3) Stewart - Fast in 1997 but unreliable. Not that much more reliable in 1998, and not very spectacular either.
2) BAT/Craig Pollock - They just handled the Tyrrell affair outrageously.
1) Prost - This isn't CART or IRL, Alain. You can't buy a chassis, engine and tyres and hope for success. It's F1. You gotta work for it.
1999
3) Olivier Panis - Comprehensively outpaced by Jarno Trulli in race trim and in points, despite having the better qualifying record.
2) Arrows - Prince Malik ftw.
1) Lucky Strike 555 Reynard Teleglobe Jacques Villeneuve Racing British American Racing Bridgestone Supertec - I'm sorry, but that money would have been better spent improving the world.
3) Brabham - Good 1989 season fails to transfer over to the new decade, and team scores only 2 points with Modena at the first race.

1) Driver safety - Lots of horrible accidents in 1994, fatal and non-fatal made the safety of the sport questionable. Especially at Imola.![]()

Re: "Reject of the Year" for years that were not covered.
I've quite frankly had enough of people who keep on saying 'safety, safety safety.' I've said this before; I don't like seeing people dieing, or getting badly hurt, but that is all part of the sport. When you make a mistake at top speed, you are supposed to pay, somehow. If your car fails you, then that's too bad. That's part of racing and luck. CART had three fatal accidents in the Split era, Jeff Krosnoff at Toronto in 1996, Gonzalo Rodriguez at Laguna Seca in 1999 and Greg Moore at Fontana in 1999. But they were doing what they loved, and especially in Moore's case, he was doing it because racing was part of him, and he accepted all the risks, knowing it could take him away.

But they died. They shouldn't have died doing something that for all intents and purposes is entertainment.
And as someone who has had more bereavements in my 17 years than I would have preferred, I'd bet the friends and family of these guys who died 'doing something they loved' would rather they were still alive and working behind the till in Tesco, than a dead and a motorsport hero.

Re: "Reject of the Year" for years that were not covered.
The thing is, death is an integral part of life. You can die anywhere. As Jackie Stewart said: "No matter how secure F1 is, we'll have another fatality." There are a lot of factors you can't control. So you can't sey they shouldn't have died. These things just happen. It's sad, it's tough and I feel sorry, really, but you have to think that only three drivers were killed of the some 40 or so that competed in CART during that period, to follow the example.

I will do a list of RotY only (not 2nd and 3rd places). I think most will agree with these:
1999: BAR
1998: Ricardo Rosset (but it's a tough choice between him and Prost)
1997: Lola
1996: Forti
1995: Pacific
1994: (Lack of) safety
1993: Andretti
1992: Capelli
1999: BAR
1998: Ricardo Rosset (but it's a tough choice between him and Prost)
1997: Lola
1996: Forti
1995: Pacific
1994: (Lack of) safety
1993: Andretti
1992: Capelli
Go home, Bernie Ecclestone!

1998 is Prost for me. First things first, Rosset is perhaps one of the most unluckiest drivers in (somewhat) recent memory. 1996 for Footwork with a somewhat insane Tom Walkinshaw at the helm, 1997 at the Lola fiasco, and 1998 at Tyrrell where the mechanics basically wanted to kill him. The 1995 F3000 season was arguably not very strong, but still, this was 2nd in the championship in his debut season, in the cars which Faustus described as being much more challenging than the spec series and better preparation for F1. On the other hand, Prost had a fantastic 1997 year, be it with Ligier equipment, and fell right down to earth in 98'. Perhaps CART would have been a better choice for The Professor.
While Lola was arguably the biggest farce of all time, I personally think that due to only 1 entry, it should go to someone else. The problem is that nobody else was particularly rejectworthy, so Lola it is!
![Razz :P](./images/smilies/icon_razz.gif)
Same goes for 1996 I guess, though Katayama is probably somewhere near the top.
I'm not gonna talk about 1994 because I know I'm gonna get involved in some forum war.
1993 is deserved by Scuderia Italia/Lola for a ridiculous car. To quote Michele Alboreto following a test run, "We're dead". Andretti was not as bad as many think. His qualifying pace was usually around Senna's time, and many times he got involved in unfortunate accidents, Donington with Wendlinger for example. With a bit more commitment to the cause, he could have been a serious contender for wins. Italy 1993 was fantastic.
Err, what about Andrea Moda for 1992?

Err, you're quite right on Andrea Moda. I should be punished for forgetting about them
![Mr. Green ](./images/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif)
But I feel free to disagree with Andretti not being "as bad". I know he was somewhat unlucky with rule changes, incidents and so on, but he completely failed to deliver. His qualifying pace wasn't "usually around Senna's time": he never got any closer than 0.5s, and only four times out of thirteen attempts he was closer than 1 second. Italy 1993 wasn't a particularly great race, he finished 3rd mainly because of attrition: Senna, Schumacher, Prost and Berger retired, someone had to finish 3rd and he wasn't very fast. Reject of the Year is partially based on expectations, and I guess the expectations of Scuderia Italia being shameful were higher than these of Andretti being so slow compared with Senna; I know Lola is not only their 1997 F1 car, but they hadn't been very successful with their attempts in the few previous years...

I just thought, Julian Bailey is a candidate for 1988, only qualified his Tyrrell 6 times all season, whilst teammate Jonathan Palmer scored 5 points, and could have possibly scored a podium at Detroit.

Re: "Reject of the Year" for years that were not covered.
1995
3) Karl Wendlinger - If big crashes were reasons for 'Hang up the keys', this would be more than worthy of a mention.
2) Taki Inoue - A lesson in how to injure yourself without crashing your car!
1) The comeback kings - It would be so easy to say Simtek, Pacific or Forti but just look at all the names who made disappointing returns to F1 that year, Mansell, Moreno, Tarquini to name a few...
1994
3) JJ Lehto - Would have been Benetton's answer to Dave Walker had he not been promoted to 6th in Canada.
2) Lotus - At least Larrousse got some points out of their 6 drivers!
3) Pacific - You could tell their car was a Benetton clone, it handled like a prototype!
1993
3) Tyrrell - Their 1st pointless season!
2) Derek Warwick - Another disappointing comeback king.
1) Michele Alboreto - Driving for the worst team is bad enough, but being outperformed by your rookie team-mate is worse, how Minardi chose him for 94 instead of Badoer is beyond me!
1992
3) Jordan - 2nd year blues would be a massive understatement!
2) Ferrari - If the 1991 car was a truck according to Prost, what does that make the 1992 car?
1) Minardi - A solitary point being the result of losing Martini and Ferrari to Dallara after reaching their peak in 1991.
1991
3) Thierry Boutsen - What a way to go after 2 years at Williams, no points for Ligier!
2) Footwork - 200+kg Porsche V12 equals 1st pointless season!
1) Larrousse Lola - From 11 points in 1990 to just 2 in 1991 though quite a few teams fell from grace in 1991.
3) Karl Wendlinger - If big crashes were reasons for 'Hang up the keys', this would be more than worthy of a mention.

Re: "Reject of the Year" for years that were not covered.
I actually though Warwick did OK in 1993 but just had dreadful luck. He was taken out by Patrese and Irvine trying reckless overtaking moves in Portugal and Japan, and lost points on several other occasions when the car let him down or had collisons with his teammate when in good positions (and I don;t think they were necessarily his fault).
"Poor old Warwick takes it from behind all throughout this season".
