1979 Dywa GP — Monza Results Up, season over!

After the greatest championship battle in the history of motorsports, Dywa GP will return for 1979! :deletraz:

The actual races won't start any time soon; obviously time is needed to set up the carset, and ye need time to confirm entries.

Why?
After the roaring success that was the 1978 season, the series' financial backers have upped their funding for 1979, with new cars and an all-new tour into the Eastern Bloc for the calendar!

What?
The cars for 1979 have been overhauled, the all-new ground-effects Dywa-002 becoming the mandatory chassis for the series. The trusty and reliable Renzo V8 continues to be used.

When?
Races will be streamed in the GPR Discord server when they are run for ye to come and watch, though there will not likely be a consistent schedule to this so to not put myself under needless pressure.

How?
GP2 will be used to make this into reality, as it was last time.
The overall format of weekends will be typical for anything run on GP2.
Races will be around 152.5km in length.
Unlike 1978, there will be no limit on the amount of teams that can enter. If there are fifteen or more teams on the entry list, pre-qualifying will be used to determine who goes into qualifying. The bottom fourteen teams in the Teams' Championship will take part in pre-qualifying.

The points system for races is similar to F1's points system at this time, albeit with bonus points.

Ye people of the forum are to compete in this series, as like last time. Those who ran teams in 1978 can continue on with those entries if they want. Same rules apply for drivers as in 1978, that is, all drivers must be canon DECs. Each team entry must comprise of a name, a team nationality, and two drivers (along with the nationality of each driver).

Vaillante Équipe Dywa France will return in 1979 but with a new name of Équipe Dywa Vaillante.

Tim Floc'h will leave the team and the series with immediate effect, moving to a different racing series but he will work with the team on driver coaching of new Canadian star Paul Pott (b. 13 January 1953).

"Michel Vaillant" will only do a part-time schedule as he moves to European Formula 3 with the rest of the rounds being filled by a driver to be named later.

Dickenson Lightley is returning for 1979. George Lightley will be driving the backup car as always, but after the team owners were unable to retain Zorbin after the season finale, they have been on the lookout for a replacement number 1 driver over the winter. more on that to follow.

I wish to field my own team for Dywa GP with surprise star Nikolai Zorbin for 1979. As part of an attempt to improve relations with the west The Soviet Motorsport Activities Committee will help field the Belorussian-based Racing Team of Friendship Socialist Countries, using many staff who work in the Soviet Formula 1 Championship.

We will take any potential offers for the second car, though drivers from the Eastern Bloc will get preference.

Timo Fuchs will NOT contest the 1979 season, as he is starting a BMW M1 Procar team and still has the potential to get an F1 drive.

After a few weeks of of not hearing anything back from Pilia, the mechanics at the Dickenson-Lightley garage receive a surprise visit from a man with a tie and big sunglasses, claiming to be a Dywa representative. He comes with the rules for the 1979 season for the chassis on a double sided piece of A4 paper.

Moe Lightley thanks the man for travelling all that way with the document when posting was also possible. Banter about the Italian postal service follows, and the man stays for lunch (ham and cheese sandwiches). As they chat, Lightley suddenly remembers the letter from Pilia, and shows it to the Dywa representative, who then tells them that Lilia won't be driving for them come 1979.

After bidding the man safe travels, Moe gets on the phone to his partner Castle "Dickie" Dickenson, at that time staying somewhere in the Scottish Highlands with some well-to-do mates. Dickie answers the phone, hears the news about Pilia, and immediately recommends his drinking buddy for the day, Barry McKockiner, who is a few metres away from the phone. Lightley and Dickenson offer the Scot their drive for the full season, or at least the first few races, and Barry heartily accepts right there and then.

The writing up of the contract takes longer, because Lightley is having trouble hearing anything over the other side of the phone what with the loud music playing. He hopes he's spelled the Scot's name right.

This was run a few weeks back but I am putting it for posterity:

Dickenson-Lightley's new driver, Barry McKockiner, has been presented with a demand by his new team — race under the Union Jack instead of the Saltire like he did in 1978.
1-50 — he immediately acquiesces to the demand, and shall race under the Union Jack.
51-94 — he does not acquiesce, but is open to further negotiations on if he can use the Saltire..
95-100 — he immediately walks out of the team.

Seeing the influx of Warsaw Pact drivers coming into the series, East German Trabant Series specialist Karl Gustav Schneider will join the Racing Team of Friendship Socialist Countries. The 39 year old wishes for a change of pace with something safer than a Trabant 601.

Chechoslovak Nicholas krutzhoff will enter for GLB in the eastern bloc rounds in the car of Zhen Hong, Trosschi will do all other races from when she comes availabe. GLB has confirmed it has defenitely to do with Zhen Hong being Vietnamese.

In their madcap signing, Dickenson-Lightley have done a Monisha Kaltenborn and accidentally signed two drivers to their second seat come 1979. Heywood Jablowme's signature was still wet on the paper when a deal was made with Javier Scarpetta, whose heroic podium at Pau drew the attention of the British team, to drive for them in the upcoming season.

However, as it was so late in the season, Dickenson-Lightley are going to run Jablowme at Pergusa as he is already prepared. Following that, Scarpetta will be run to the end of the season unless 1.) Jablowme gets an amazing result or 2.) Scarpetta is crap.

Most importantly, above all other things: Scarpetta has agreed that while he may run the Uruguayan flag on his car, he must enter under the Union Jack, especially with regard to his wiki. Not knowing what a wiki is, Scarpetta has dutifully accepted.

tl;dr Jablowme does round 1 and Scarpetta does the rest of the season.

PRE-QUALIFYING REPORT

Pre-Qualifying was marred with controversy after it transpired that the wrong team was told they failed to qualify. A number of teams only had one car set a time, and these teams were placed behind all teams who had both cars set a single lap. Though LATE should have failed to pre-qualify, the officials told Automotive SuperSport that they DNPQ'ed, and this error wasn't realised until after the race. The mistake has been attributed to a clerical error. As a result, however, Automotive SuperSport will be exempt from pre-qualifying for the following round at Imola. In any case, the fasted team overall in pre-qualifying was the new Soviet effort Racing Team of Friendship Socialist Countries, spearheaded by Dywa GP winner Nikolai Zorbin. The fastest overall time was set by 1978 Dywa GP runner-up Mike Zhen Hong, though his teammate, Hoji Imin, did not set a time.

QUALIFYING REPORT

Qualifying was marred by accidents, in particular at the Pineta chicane. Many drivers were unable to navigate the corner without mistake, and this led to many drivers failing to set a time in at least one session, or badly compromising the laps that they did set. A combination of both of these woes befell Heywood Jablowme, whose sole representative lap was 25 seconds off the pace as a result; in many ways, the resultant DNQ vindicates Dickenson-Lightley's plans to replace him from Imola onwards with Uruguayan Javier Scarpetta. On pole was Italian Leopoldo Faraldo, but Soviet rookie Shota Kakhaberidze impressed on debut to put the nascent Blockton Impact on the front row.

RACE REPORT
Faraldo was unable to do much with his pole position, and within just a few corners, rookie Jacques Clouseau had passed both him and Kakhaberidze to take a comfortable lead. Further down the field, Ouragan would be punted off violently by Amalure Arrigorriagakoa as she came to lap him very early on. Clouseau would maintain the lead until his pit-stop, whereupon Kakhaberidze took over. The Soviet driver certainly had the pace to win (in fact, he set the fastest lap of the race), but unfortunately, he suffered one of many suspension failures to occur over the duration of the race. His team boss, the American Marcus Blockton, seemed pleased that the TV cameras got a good view of the phone number advertised on the car's bulkhead. Attrition was to be the name of the game, and cars started dropping like flies as the race progressed.

The enigmatic Sentenza took the lead following Kakhaberidze's retirement, only for his engine to fail, handing the lead to Amalure Arrigorriagakoa. Clouseau was unable to threaten for the lead, for his gearbox packed up on him. Arrigorriagakoa was unable to convert this lead into a victory, as her engine also failed with just a few laps to go. Kakhaberidze's teammate, Max Speed, was now in prime position for a stunning debut win, with only three cars running as he came to start the final lap.
But there was one final twist to come, for his suspension would fail on this last lap, relegating him to a third place despite not finishing. Against all odds, Michel Vaillant would take the chequered flag in a story for the ages, and only last year's championship runner-up, Mike Zhen Hong, was also still on-track at the end of the race. Both drivers had driven rather unremarkable races, with multiple spins (including one each on the final lap), but somehow they were able to avoid inducing any mechanical failures on their Dywa-002s, and for this they were duly rewarded. Max Speed was classified third, despite failing to finish. Canadian rookie Pol Pott, Vaillant's teammate, was classified fourth, and the remaining two points positions were taken by Amalure Arrigorriagakoa and Giacomo Campatelli.

Drive of the Race: Michel Vaillant/Mike Zhen Hong — the first drivers to complete a full race distance around Enna-Pergusa in Dywa GP history.
Reject of the Race: Heywood Jablowme — being as far off the pace as he was in qualifying was pretty inexcusable, and this total dearth of pace has made Dickenson-Lightley's decision before the weekend that he would be replaced after it look almost inspired.

Ouragan was vibe-checked by Amalure Arrigorriagakoa.

1-15: Suffers a concussion and becomes a better driver
16-35: Bruising — 'reduced' stats

After the Dickenson Lightley mechanics joked that Jablowme had perhaps had a few too many ham and cheese sandwiches before the session, it was revealed upon the Welshman's return to the pits that he had been eating during his qualifying lap.

Scarpetta cannot get in the car soon enough. At least Graves was quick! :facepalm:

Rumours suggest that among the teams protesting will be Dickenson-Lightley, Order of Racing, Automotive Super Sport and Dywa HARD, who believe that this (and nothing that went before) brings the sport into disrepute.

Pre-qualifying comprised of only thirteen teams, as Automotive SuperSport did not participate, having been granted an exemption from pre-qualifying as a result of the mix-up at Enna. Despite being second-fastest in the session, Nikolai Zorbin failed to pre-qualify because of mechanical gremlins preventing his teammate, Karl Gustav Schneider, from running.

QUALIFYING REPORT

Despite their bye from pre-qualifying, Automotive SuperSport did nothing with it and both drivers were noticeably off the pace. At the other end of the field, Leopoldo Faraldo secured back-to-back pole positions, while his teammate Ouragan raised many an eyebrow by qualifying in the dizzying heights of 17th.

RACE REPORT

The first half of the race was dominated by Euskadi Lasterketa. Both their drivers had excellent starts and it was not long before Arrigorriagakoa and Etxeberria were running 1-2, having also taken advantage of the myriad mistakes made by their rivals at Aqua Minerale. Such was Arrigorriagakoa's lead that when she came in for her pitstop, she was still running second when she left the pits. However, the Basque drivers' blistering pace had put too much strain on their engines, and they each blew their engines within a lap of one another. This blew the race wide open.
As mentioned earlier, Aqua Minerale was a persistent source of woe for the competitors, and there were a large number of very silly accidents, ranging from both Dickenson-Lightley cars spinning off there at the same time independent of one another, to a rather scary collision involving "Sentenza", Mike Zhen Hong and Max Speed.
However, the true stars of the show today were drivers racing under pseudonyms. "Ouragan" raised many eyebrows with his atypically-fast pace, which even saw him lead for a number of laps before a loose wheel dashed his hopes for victory. In the end, it was the enigmatic 'Sentenza' that took the win, becoming the first of the new drivers to win a race in 1979.

INJURY REPORT
While Max Speed did not crash out of the race, his car sustained a rather violent impact at Aqua Minerale, one of the myriad collisions at that corner during the race, where he was hit by two other cars. He hit Mike Zhen Hong who had carelessly spun off, and then was later hit by another car. Miraculously, the car kept going for another few laps until it broke down, but that doesn't mean our intrepid hero is safe.

The (in)famous Scuderia Verona driver "Ouragan" has attracted the attention of the Dywa Grand Prix paddock this weekend with a performance described by self-proclaimed neutral observer George Lightley as "most out of character".

Quite unlike his typical performances, "Ouragan" found strong pace throughout the race, leading several laps before retiring from the race late on.

"It simply wasn't Ouragan in that car", said one anonymous source, "not only did he drive the car with reasonable skill, but he also jumped out of the vehicle and over the barrier in a way that is unlikely for a man in his sixties."

A second anonymous source, stood next to our first anonymous source in their team garage, agreed, adding "we'd long suspected that he did this in qualifying but no-one really cared because it was always Ouragan on race day. But to do it in the race as well clearly crosses a line".

Rumours suggest that among the teams protesting will be Dickenson-Lightley, Order of Racing, Automotive Super Sport and Dywa HARD, who believe that this (and nothing that went before) brings the sport into disrepute.

The concerns raised by the aforementioned teams as to the identity of the driver of Car #9 for Scuderia Verona, under the alias 'Ouragan', have been noted. A thorough investigation into proceedings will be carried out.
