Peter Revson Appreciation Thread

Post by fondmetal-fond »

Please post pictures of Revvie, or his cars (preferably F1, but Can - Am and Indy are okay). Don't post his Kyalami crash pictures, please.
If you must, you can post Revlon model pictures (assuming the lords of the board deem them okay), since his uncle apparently started Revlon.

A modicum of patriotism from fellow Americans is appreciated (but keep it tasteful). I think Revson might have been the last natural - born American to win a GP (Mario Andretti was naturalized after he moved to the US).

Can we post pictures of Marjorie Wallace (the Miss World he was Sh*****G). :D

It was well known he was part of the Revlon family & his playboy image detracted from his rep. as a driver.

That powerslide is just pure automotive pornography. But what really caught my eye was that ludicrous airbox intake. It's hilarious!

Many cars had huge air intakes in those days. I guess you're just too young Carlos.

Thank you! :D

I'd seen pics of that time before, of course, but that is just preposterous. It's like someone decided to stick some piping there, got the size wrong and decided "oh hell, can't be bothered".

To me it still looks better than the current crop of ugly aerodynamic aids/sails etc.

In those days it was generally thought that the more air you could ram into the engine the better.

If you want hilarious, look up the teapot Ligier.

You want to see ugly? Take a look at the 1973/1974 Tyrrell (Stewart and Cevert's) It looks like it was cobbled together by spastic children.

I've always got confused over whether Shadow were an American or a British team. Didn't Jackie Oliver set them up?

American. They were founded by Don Nichols in the States starting in CanAm...but when they went to F1 they set up a base in Britian.

I always thought of them as American. That's where most of the money came from & some of the drivers.

Oliver decamped to Arrows (Allegedly "Amon Rees Oliver Widdows" gave it the name) & I think Shadow sued because the first Arrows car was too similar.

(March was allegedly Moseley (!), Amon Rees Cowan Herd)

You're right Kostas couldn't remember the guy's name. Kept thinking Eaton/Follmer which is enough to put anyone off.

[I even now think of McLaren as having US connections because of their early Can Am success (the Bruce & Denny show) & the Haas/Meyer years]

Can't speak for Kostas, but in my own case I just remember (some) stuff.

I really don't know much after about 1994.

A combination of old age & just too many changes.

Complete opposite in my case. Anything before 1994 was sketchy because either I was too young or not born yet.

As Nelson Piquet just about manages to finish the 1982 Brazilian GP with his head leant on the side of the cockpit through exhaustion Murray Walker uttered "He is about to complete the last lap if he can just remain concious".

They were MEN in them days!!!

God... plus the various antics when pilots fainted after the races...

On a different discipline, Aussie Casey Stoner got some sort of virus or whatever and kept racing. During the Spain/Jerez GP this year, he threw up 3 or 4 times inside his helmet during the race, and kept on to finish 3rd or 4th. They had to physically lift him off the bike after the race, same thing the following week in Le Mans. There's still MEN around.

Safari Rally 2001, Bruno Thiry drove 160km without Power Steering (which on the monsterously huge Skoda Octavias were always the worst), then had to drive another 60km to service. He had to be lifed from his car and only had 20 minute break before he had to leave and do another 70km stage, which he crashed in halfway through he was so physically and mentally exhausted.
I miss the Safari Rally...was utter chaos at times.

Bike racers are just barking....I knew several & they were all just mad as hatters.

One was the most accident prone & unreliable person I have ever known. Still managed the TT course & later became a national rally champion. I declined his kind offer to run his team one year!!!!!!

Why amazing? I'd say sad!!! I just happened to know some bike racers thru the brother of a schoolfriend & another was a work colleague.

I've not really been in the thick of it, that was prob the closest I got to actually participating. I was once offered the chance to race driver train by someone who thought I had some ability. Based on what I do not know. But I turned it down to my eternal regret.

(Oh & I think I may be the oldest rejects person) (Prob by some years)

Well, for most of us, watching F1 on TV and discussing it online, you have pretty much been in the thick of it. No matter if it was club racing, it was still racing.

Who would want to race a lot of old Hondas anyway?

If you get the chance do it.

I'm a bit concerned Carlos is giving me a status which is totally undeserved.

I really haven't been any more involved than anyone else on here & probably less than many.

This is what happens when you start a thread about a random non-reject driver on the F1 Rejects forum.

Nothing about him is actually said.

Well, I posted a picture of the man powersliding a car with a ludicrously-sized air intake on top. That has to count for something.

I'm not complaining, I'm just stating a fact.

Let's say, if there had been a 'Taki Inoue Appreciation Thread' we'd have all flocked to it with pictures and videos about the legendary safety-car enemy.
