The season started off with tragedy,as promising hopeful Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna were killed at Imola. The following race saw Karl Wedlinger crash heavily at Monaco. The race after, another blow came to the Simtek team when Andrea Montermini crashed hard at the final turn in Spain during practice.Despite these setbacks, the Simtek team were mightly impressive in their first season, taking a hefty total of six wins, half of which came from Jean-Marc Gounon, who replaced Montermini.
However, tragedy aside, this season could easily rank as one of the best,if not the most controversial, yet. The Lotus team started out strong, but fell back due to a lack of money, which eventually saw a barrage of drivers enter and exit the team. This will play an important role later on in the season.Meanwhile, after Lotus's early domination, the Ligier team took a level in competitiveness, and both their drivers,Eric Bernard and Olivier Panis, saw each other score highly throughout the year, although the wins by the coming and going Simtek and Larrousse drivers limited their trophy tally quite a bit. Then Lotus started to get really desperate for cash, and so they planned a trade with Ligier for then championship leader Bernard, with 3rd place Johnny Herbert moving to Ligier.
It all seemed like the deal was going to go through fine to the end of the season, but after just one race, the European Grand Prix,Herbert was promptly snapped up by Benetton,so Bernard wished for his place back at Ligier.Lotus let him go,but to his horror,Ligier already signed Frank Lagorce, and with Lotus having already signed a replacement for him,Bernard was left with nowhere to go.The championship leader's only hope was to sit in front of the TV and hope former team mate Panis failed to climb up at all during the final two races.Although Panis retired from Japan,a textbook performance saw Olivier Panis clinch the title at Australia, leaving Bernard frustrated.Bernard has not returned to Formula One since.
