A shock title victory in what was overall a tragic, yet exciting year for the sport. The year started off as usual for Graham Hill, taking the season opener. However, the legend retired mid-season with three championships and thirteen race victories. In a tragic twist of irony, however,Hill was killed that very same year when his plane crashed into a golf course, killing him and up-and-comer Tony Brise, who looked promising with a win in Sweden.

In the race situation,Mark Donohue was the latest hot driver in the field.Unfortunately for Donohue, his car would crash in final practice for the Austrian Grand Prix, which left Lella Lombardi a clear, open shot for the title. However, two bad races for her allowed Wilson Fittipaldi to catch right up,but he needed a miracle result at the Glen to take the championship.Lombardi was entering that race, too, with the late Donohue still leading the championship.

Right off the bat Lombardi had problems as she couldn't get the ignition to start. That's when Jacques Laffite poured visor-cleaning fluid in his eyes to give Lombardi another shot to race.Stupid or not,Laffite's plan didn't work out as Lombardi was inefficently proportioned to squeeze into Laffite's car. This left Wilson Fittipaldi left with a chance to win, should he climb up to 9th place. He banked on the high attrition of the race, including Clay Regazzoni withdrawing from the race to try and helf Fittipaldi win. However,he did his math wrong. He coasted along in 10th and last, thinking that the amount of positions he gained in the race was enough. It wasn't enough.Mark Donohue was the first posthumous champion in the history of the sport. In a poignant moment, the original Hard Charger trophy, given out since 1950,was buried at the exact same spot Donohue was killed as a sign of respect for the fallen champion. The original Hard Charger gold medals, given out along with the trophy, were also buried next to the golf course where Graham Hill's plane crashed.A sad year overall for racing.

(I made the very last bit up,of course,so don't go around the Red Bull Ring looking for a trophy in the woods.)

I bet no one saw that coming.Alan Jones was really silent throughout the year, rarely getting high scores, but somehow,he won the championship 10 points ahead of Tom Pryce, the championship favourite. Also,Michel Leclere gets kicked out of Wolf-Williams while in a prime championship challenging spot, and the exact same thing happened to Jacky Ickx at the very next race!Seems like Walter Wolf and Frank Williams had lost their right minds! They split at the end of that season,I wonder why?

Many people were focusing their attention on a tight developing battle between Brett Lunger and Emerson Fittipaldi for most of the season, with Rupert Keegan playing a supporting role in a brilliant film. But then came a plot twist in the form of Patrick Neve, the extra for the first half was putting up several showstopping performances to wow audiences and take all the prizes for himself. The last three races were an anticlimax, however, with Neve and Lunger putting poor performances and Fittipaldi not finishing a race, with all three missing the final scene in Japan, where local boy Kunimitsu Takahashi upsetting the regulars of the F1 circus.

Also, fans have been developing some sort of lore called the "winner's curse",where a former champion will die in early age, such as Johnny Claes in 1955, Louis Rosier in 1956 and Jo Siffert in 1971,or the defending champion will die such as Carol Godin de Beaufort in 1964,Bruce McLaren in 1970 and Graham Hill in 1975.Or even the championship leader would die during the course of the season, like John Taylor in 1966 and Mark Donohue in 1975.Sadly,another one has to be added to that list.Tom Pryce, who was leading the championship up until the very last race in 1976,was killed in a freak accident in South Africa in which he hit a marshal.

There were several new faces, all of them French, and took the season by storm, with three French people in the top 5,another one making the top 10,and taking six wins total.Brett Lunger did a fine job considering how many retirements he had and how many DNQs,trying to exploit a tactic of qualifying low and sailing on retirements.Lunger seemed content and left F1 at the end of the season.

And the French revolution ends as instantly as it had started, with Jochen Mass just barely taking the spot left open by the poor-performing Pironi.John Watson was pushing to the very end,but failed to gain enough positions in Watkins Glen to take the title. Also,Hector Rebaque must claim a new record here,as he won every race he finished.

NOTE:I won't be doing as major of a summary as I did on the last two decades,if there if any summary at all.I just feel too bathplugging lazy and my school's coming up,so thats quite difficult to keep up with.

Jochen Mass could have easily had two titles in a row all sewn up,but Jody Scheckter had a very competitive car in his Ferrari which saw him well on his way to the crown.Mass was also hindered by an injury suffert at the Oesterreichring when his car flipped over several times.Mass wasn't the only one with a potential injury that cost him the championship as Alain Prost and Marc Surer both injured themselves at Kylami and missed out on a few more races. Also,Rene Arnoux is not following the obvious trend of being competitive as he floundered his way across the track to lose 21 positions total.

Also,James1978,get ready to see your predicting skills.I know me Pic-king Pic to win the Johnny Claes award this year might have not been the best prediction thus far...

This is going down as one of the all-time great performances.Marc Surer stormed his way through the field to take the title that could have been his a year earlier had he not injured himself at Kylami. He managed to gain two times more positions than the next runner up,Eddie Cheever. This year also sees Siegfried Stohr take a victory in his lone year in F1 and the introduction of a betting system.Elio de Angelis was the bookies choice to win,but came joint fifth, much to the disappointment of several betters.

Results of the...rather chaotic 1982 season out tommorrow or Sunday, but here is a sneak preview:Three drivers have a very high chance of winning the championship going into Caesar's Salad Grand Prix, and the leader for most of the season is out after a mid-season injury, forcing him to retire from F1.

This season was, proclaimed by many,to be the "best championship ever" despite tragic lossed in Canada and Belgium.Bookies noted Surer's absence for the first 5 races and picked John Watson to win,but Watson was only good enough for joint sixth.Instead,it was 1979 champion Jochen Mass taking the lead all the way through the season as it progressed.Marc Surer desperately tried to make up for lost ground when he started, but he didn't seem to claw up standings enough. Then came the French Grand Prix,in which Jochen Mass collided with Mauro Baldi, who won the past two races in dominating style.Baldi collected the catch fencing while Mass vaulted into the stands.Thankfully,Mass only had burnt hands and no one in the stands was injured, but Mass decided enough was enough and left F1.

Marc Surer immedaitely found pace in Germany to climb twenty positions, but in Austria,Dijon and Italy,Surer found himself slipping to Baldi,Chico Serra and Nigel Mansell, the latter of which came to life all of a sudden, leaving four drivers to fight out the title in a Car Park, with Serra leading with 82 positions,Surer with 80,Baldi 74 and Mansell 71.

Chico Serra wanted to employ a strategy in which he would qualify low to gain the most positions, but qualified a bit too slow and did not make the grid, taking the runners for the championship down to three.Mansell was the next fall guy as he retired after a collision on lap 8,which left just two.Surer climbed up like a man possessed to claim his second straight title,a feat only done before by Bruce McLaren some twenty years prior, but Baldi wanted that title so badly that he followed Surer up the rankings, but didn't quite have the pace to get there, leaving Surer victorious for a second straight season. The race was won by Rupert Keegan in a cameo appereance in a March.

This was the year of John Watson, who practically dominated every single race he competed in his McLaren. You think with a total like that,he would claim many records, right?Well, you're wrong. He missed out on Graham Hill's stunning 1974 record of positions gained, but he also loses out on biggest gap between 1st and 2nd,which was claimed by Hill in 1974 again. He doesn't even have the record for most wins in a season,he ties with Mike Beuttler back in '73,but Watson had two shared wins compared to Beuttler's one.

Little trivia for you:Out of the 15 races this year,10 of them were won or shared by a person whose name begins with the letter J.Never has one letter dominated so much in Formula One.

After the shock retirement of reigning champion John Watson, bookies went for his teammate Niki Lauda, however they were all left in the dust by Skoal driver Jonathan Palmer, who blew away most drivers into the armco behind him,as the weeds were covered up by safety regulations. Some drivers still kept pace, though, like two-time champion Surer and newcomer Thierry Boutsen.Palmer did lose form in the second half of the season, which saw Piercarlo Ghinzani rocket up the standings in a now-competitive Osella.

One look at the standings make you think Martin Brundle cakewalked the field, with teammate Stefan Bellof not doing enough to match his teammate in the incredibly dominant Tyrell.Look again and it is closer than you think. The Tyrells were indeed dominant, with them at least being on the top spot of the podium 11 times, with Brundle and Bellof sharing the podium once while Johansson won the opening race before moving to Ferrari and Capelli won the final race of the season. However,Stefan Bellof was killed in an endurance event while at his prime. Before his death,he won five race, four of them consecutive wins altogether. He seemed to be the one to break Graham Hill's long standing record before his life was tragically cut short, and Brundle took over at the helm of Tyrell, inevitably taking the championship also with five wins.

Other notable performances included a lack of form for Marc Surer after finishing high the past couple of seasons,John Watson makes a return to F1 for one race, winning that race to take a true final bow and Minardi are off to a great start in F1,with Pierluigi Martini having great form whenever he finished.

The winners curse strikes again.Marc Surer was comfortably leading hte championship 5 races in when he had a serious crash in a rally, injuring Surer and killing his co-driver.Marc Surer would eventually give up driving, leaving F1 with 13 wins and two championships.Jacques Laffite then looked hot to win the title, but broke his legs in Britian, ending his F1 career. This left three hot contenders:The high-scoring but rarely finishing Zakspeed of 1984 champion Jonathan Palmer,or the two consistent Tyrells of Martin Brundle, reigning champion, and Phillipe Strieff, marking his first attempt to climb up the field and win the title. It looked like Streiff had the title, but failures to finish in Portugal and Mexico while a poor finish in Australia left him third, just behind team mate Brundle, but it was Jonathan Palmer with spectacular last ditch efforts for his title at Australia.

Also,1976 champion Alan Jones returns to F1 and shows everyone that he can still be competitive.Unfortunately, this will be his last F1 season.

Up until midseason, this was the half-year of Pascal Fabre.Determined to become the first French driver in 20 years to win the title,he set out on a hot-streak,blitzing all of his competitors into the gravel trap, with countryman Philippe Streiff not that far behind in the Tyrrell, which was the car to beat the last two seasons.Fabre, however, stumbled after the German GP due to the AGS falling foul of failing to qualify. However,AGS started to blame their driver, and in an unbelievably draconian move, threw out a real title challenger with two races to go.Replacement driver Roberto Moreno wasn't that bad, winning the finale, but it still was a huge blow to Fabre.

This left the door wide open for Streiff and defending champion Jonathan Palmer in the Tyrrell.Palmer switched seats with Martin Brundle, with Brundle feeling that the Zakspeeed was fast enough to take it.It had speed but zero reliability, giving the Tyrells an open shot to win.Palmer was leading comfortable after Italy, but the next three races saw Streiff claw back to within one position of the lead, while both passed Graham Hill's unbelievable record back in 1974 for most positions gained in a season. In Australia,Streiff pushed hard, but he pushed a bit too hard and spun off on lap 6.The last thing he could have hoped for is that Plamer loses positions in the race.Instead,Palmer took advantage of attrition to blitz the field bar Moreno and become the third triple-champion after Bruce McLaren and Graham Hill.He also became the third driver to win consecutive championships after McLaren again and Marc Surer in 1981/1982.

A real up and down season as no one seemed to be scoring high in any race and no one bar Yannick Dalmas was consistently gaining positions in any race or not finishing enough to get a real push off the field. Dalmas himself finished only one race from Hungary to the end of the season, citing unreliability as a major factor throughout the season. Palmer barely challenged for the win at any race while the *new Coloni car was extremely impressive, bringing Gabriele Tarquini two wins and 6th in the standings. Not bad for a first try on a one car team.

Not something you could say about the team in the actual championship.

I know I'm going to sound really anal saying this but the picture for the 1987 winner is actually Johnny Herbert (and it's also from 1989). ;-)

Sorry WaffleCat!!

Well,it's actually pretty difficult to find 3 different Jonathan Palmer pics of ok size from his racing days.

Thanks for the info, though.I might copy his 1984 pic onto that one.

Oz-Satoru Nakajima

From the start,it easily looked like Jonathan Palmer would claim victory in what would turn out to be his final year in the sport.Eddie Cheever, knowing that this was also his own final season, had other plans.Just like Dalmas last season, his charge for the crown only really lasted until Hungary, but by then he had built up an insurmountable lead that Palmer found too difficult to keep up with.Satoru Nakajima and Emanuele Pirro shone for Hungary and beyond, proving these two driver's immense talent in the Formula One circus.

Race Winners

USA-Alessandro Nannini/Michele Alboreto/Mauricio Gugelmin
Brazil-Satoru Nakajima
San Marino-Paolo Barilla
Monaco-Eric Bernard
Canada-Alex Caffi
Mexico-Alain Prost
France-David Brabham

German-Nicola Larini
Hungary-Alex Caffi
Belgian-Michele Alboreto
Italian-Nicola Larini/David Brabham
Portugal-Nicola Larini
Spanish-Michele Alboreto
Japanese-Philippe Alloit
Down Under-Olivier Grouillard

The season started out pretty open, and no one could really make an accurate prediction who might win the title until France, where Alex Caffi and Nicola Larini were heading a very competitive group of cars. From France onwards,it was the Caffi and Larini show, with race wins being taken from them by the unreliable Alboreto or the even more unreliable Paolo Barilla, who was starting to show in his few finishes that he was more than just an heir to a pasta factory. While Caffi had an edge in speed,Larini took advantage of reliability, and a DNF in Spain for Caffi left him 16 positions back heading into Adelaide.A big gap,but not insurmountable.Caffi told reporters that he'd go slow in qualifying and hope that other cars around him fall down. However,Caffi went a bit too slow, and accidentally DNQ'ed himself from Adelaide, thus giving Nicola Larini a memorable championship victory in his Ligier, also giving Ligier its first title after 14 years in the sport.

They say it takes a while for a Lotus to bloom, but when it does, its results are absolutely spectacular, and Mika Hakkinen just shows how spectacular it really is with an incredible performance throughout the season, with Johnny Herbert joining in late after Julian Bailey, who co-dominated San Marino alongside Hakkinen, left F1 for undisclosed reasons.Erik Comas also pulled out a spectacular showing in his Ligier, proving that these two teams are picking up the pace after spending quite a while in the sport not exactly gaining any success. Also, the Jordan revolving door was competitive, however Bertrand Gachot unleashed CS Gas at a taxi driver, giving Alessandro Zanardi an opportunity to win a race.

Hungaroring-Damon Hill
Spa-Aguri Suzuki
Monza-Andrea de Cesaris
Estoril-Christian Fittipaldi
Suzuka-Jyrki Jarviletho
Adelaide-Thierry Boutsen

A hotly contested season.Comas should have got it,but his major crash in Spa knocked his momentum off and failed to finish his last 4 races, effectively costing him the championship.Hill could have won,but DNQ'ed 6 too many times and his ride at Brabham went brankrupt before the year ended.Boutsen was quick, but too unreliable.Jarviletho and Martini probably had some of the best opportunities, but those couldn't quite come to frution, which left Michele Alboreto in the Footwork to take victory without even posting a single win to his name in the season, something we never thought possible in this modern day & age.

Christian Fittipaldi dominates this season in a very convincing manner indeed, storming off to claim four victories for the crown. It could have been more different, however,if Alloit and Badoer finished consistently or if Thierry Boutsen and Fabrizio Barbazza were given the entire season to show what they've got.Barbazza was actually the championship favourite early on,the big haired Italian rounding up three wins before a couple of minor DNQ's and BAM!,he was out of a ride.

The season started off with tragedy,as promising hopeful Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna were killed at Imola. The following race saw Karl Wedlinger crash heavily at Monaco. The race after, another blow came to the Simtek team when Andrea Montermini crashed hard at the final turn in Spain during practice.Despite these setbacks, the Simtek team were mightly impressive in their first season, taking a hefty total of six wins, half of which came from Jean-Marc Gounon, who replaced Montermini.

However, tragedy aside, this season could easily rank as one of the best,if not the most controversial, yet. The Lotus team started out strong, but fell back due to a lack of money, which eventually saw a barrage of drivers enter and exit the team. This will play an important role later on in the season.Meanwhile, after Lotus's early domination, the Ligier team took a level in competitiveness, and both their drivers,Eric Bernard and Olivier Panis, saw each other score highly throughout the year, although the wins by the coming and going Simtek and Larrousse drivers limited their trophy tally quite a bit. Then Lotus started to get really desperate for cash, and so they planned a trade with Ligier for then championship leader Bernard, with 3rd place Johnny Herbert moving to Ligier.

It all seemed like the deal was going to go through fine to the end of the season, but after just one race, the European Grand Prix,Herbert was promptly snapped up by Benetton,so Bernard wished for his place back at Ligier.Lotus let him go,but to his horror,Ligier already signed Frank Lagorce, and with Lotus having already signed a replacement for him,Bernard was left with nowhere to go.The championship leader's only hope was to sit in front of the TV and hope former team mate Panis failed to climb up at all during the final two races.Although Panis retired from Japan,a textbook performance saw Olivier Panis clinch the title at Australia, leaving Bernard frustrated.Bernard has not returned to Formula One since.

World of Formula One,Pedro Diniz has arrived. With the Tyrell looking good in the hands of Mika Salo, they looked like favourites to win this year, and probably several years after. But instead, the rookie package of Diniz and Forti took charge to the circus, winning a new record of six races, three in the beginning, and three in the end.Another team, apart from Forti, that had a dominant streak throughout the year was the Pacific team in their second year. Results started slow, but when Montermini took charge in Germany, the unreliable but fast Pacifics, with the Lotus team now backing them up,took home two more wins through Bertrand Gachot and a surprise winner in Jean-Denis Deletraz, prompting a certain Mr Murray Walker to say "And What is Deletraz doing?".However, most transcripts of that famous quote are slightly inaccurate,as Walker said,off-mic,"Winning the European Grand Prix, that's what he's doing!"

Panis can't possibly win 1997 with him missing half the season with his injury I would have thought.
