BTCC Amateurs Cup (From 2004) 2005 Begins

Post by Samster »

Time to have a go at one of these alternate championships. :D

With the end of the Production Class after the 2003 season, more and more relative amateurs have decided to make the step up to the Touring Class in the BTCC for 2004. Therefore returning series admin, Alan Gow has decided to introduce an 'Amateurs Cup' for the drivers with little experience in junior categories, mostly the 'gentleman drivers' to give them something to race for.

Eligible drivers for 2004.

15. Fariqe Hairuman (Petronas Syntium Proton)
17. John George (TH Motorsports)
21. Paul Wallace (GA Motorsports)
40. Richard Marsh (John Bachelor Racing)
77. Jason Hughes (Kartworld)

Round 1 Thruxton

Richard Marsh will join at Brands Hatch next time out.

Qualifying

So our four current contenders make up the bottom four spots on the grid. Clearly the correct drivers were chosen based on this evidence. ;)

Grid
17. 21 Paul Wallace +3.418
18. 77 Jason Hughes +3.557
19. 15 Fariqe Hairuman +5.277
20. 17 John George +7.923

Race 1

The first race of the season saw John George take a surprise win in his hopeless gas powered Honda Civic despite finishing a lap down on the overall leaders. Paul Wallace and Fariqe Hairuman were eliminated on the very first lap while Jason Hughes had been on his way to victory only to retire with just two laps remaining.

15. 17 John George +1 lap (15)
Ret 77 Jason Hughes
Ret 15 Fariqe Hairuman
Ret 21 Paul Wallace

Race 2

Hairuman fails to even start leaving just three amateurs on the grid. Wallace again fails to make the flag leaving Hughes as the winner from George.

12. 77 Jason Hughes +41.337 (15)
13. 17 John George +1 lap (12)
Ret 21 Paul Wallace
DNS 15 Fariqe Hairuman

Race 3

Oh good lord, now none of them even finish this time! Hairuman is again out on lap 1 while Hughes is taken out by Tom Chilton. Wallace and George at least come close to making the flag but their cars sadly let them down towards the end.

Ret 17 John George
Ret 21 Paul Wallace
Ret 77 Jason Hughes
Ret 15 Fariqe Hairuman

Standings
1. John George 27 (1)
2. Jason Hughes 15 (1)
3. Paul Wallace 0
4. Fariqe Hairuman 0

Round 2 Brands Hatch

Richard Marsh joins the grid, making it 5 amateurs, while Justin Keen also joins making the total grid number, 22.

Qualifying

Once again, the bottom four positions are made up by our amateurs only this time, Paul Wallace actually manages to out-qualify both Rob Collard and Justin Keen.

16. 21 Paul Wallace +0.832
19. 15 Fariqe Hairuman +1.332
20. 77 Jason Hughes +2.364
21. 40 Richard Marsh +3.000
22. 17 John George +9.707

Race 1

George is involved in the first lap pile up while yet again, Wallace and Hairuman fail to finish. This leaves Hughes to take his second win of the season, taking the championship lead with Marsh in second a lap down, his Civic equally as pathetic as George's despite not being gas powered.

14. 77 Jason Hughes +34.435 (15)
15. 40 Richard Marsh +1 lap (12)
Ret 21 Paul Wallace
Ret 15 Fariqe Hairuman
Ret 17 John George

Race 2

George is one of the many cars that won't take the start following the race 1 pile up earlier in the day. However everyone else makes the flag! Wallace is the winner, even taking an overall point. Hughes is next 18 seconds behind, just ahead of Hairuman.

10. 21 Paul Wallace +27.136 (15)
12. 77 Jason Hughes +45.685 (12)
13. 15 Fariqe Hairuman +50.423 (10)
14. 40 Richard Marsh +1 lap (8)
DNS 17 John George

Race 3

George is again unable to start while again everyone else finishes. However Hughes is the only one on the lead lap.

12. 77 Jason Hughes +30.103 (15)
13. 21 Paul Wallace +1 lap (12)
14. 15 Fariqe Hairuman +1 lap (10)
16. 40 Richard Marsh +1 lap (8)
DNS 17 John George

Points
1. Jason Hughes 57 (3)
2. Richard Marsh 28
3. Paul Wallace 27 (1)
4. John George 27 (1)
5. Fariqe Hairuman 20

Round 3 Silverstone

Paul Wallace is dropped by GA Motorsports to make way for Kelvin Burt. This leaves us with just four amateurs again for now.

Qualifying

Again, the amateurs were firmly at the bottom of the timing sheets with only Justin Keen's failure to set a lap keeping them from the very back. Hairuman impresses with his first class pole position and despite being over two seconds off he is on the same row as Proton teammate Shaun Watson-Smith.

18. 15 Fariqe Hairuman +4.592
19. 77 Jason Hughes +7.740
20. 40 Richard Marsh +9.386
21. 17 John George +10.080

Race 1

With Hughes out on the first lap, Hairuman is left to take an easy first class win with Marsh and George no where in sight with their hopeless Civics. He even nips at the heels of Keen's BMW.

15. 15 Fariqe Hairuman +50.404 (15)
16. 40 Richard Marsh +1 lap (12)
17. 17 John George +1 lap (10)
Ret 77 Jason Hughes

Race 2

Hairuman again takes the class win, this time getting to beat Keen to the flag. The Malaysian may be a long way behind his teammate but if he keeps this up he could be a strong contender for the amateur title.

17. 15 Fariqe Hairuman +41.959 (15)
19. 77 Jason Hughes +1:11.406 (12)
20. 17 John George +1 lap (10)
DNS 40 Richard Marsh

Race 3

Hairuman manages to take the triple again managing to get Keen in between himself and Hughes. Marsh again fails to start while George is out on the first lap.

15. 15 Fariqe Hairuman +41.118 (15)
17. 77 Jason Hughes +58.602 (12)
Ret 17 John George

Round 4 Oulton Park

John George has decided to pull out for the time being to develop a new and hopefully less pathetic LPG powered car, a Peugeot 406. This leaves just three amateurs for the time being.

Qualifying

Hughes takes the class pole for Oulton, both he and Marsh out-qualify Kelvin Burt who clearly had issues with his car. Hairuman sadly fails to set a laptime.

18. 77 Jason Hughes +4.660
19. 40 Richard Marsh +6.000
21. 15 Fariqe Hairuman No Time

Race 1

In our closest battle yet, Hairuman manages to eek out his fourth consecutive win by just four tenths from Hughes, though both are over half a minute behind the lowest professional. Marsh is out after one lap.

14. 15 Fariqe Hairuman +1:10.202 (15)
15. 77 Jason Hughes +1:10.610 (12)
Ret 40 Richard Marsh

Race 2

Marsh once again fails to take the start leaving Hughes and Hairuman to duke it out by themselves again. This time Hughes wins as Hairuman suffers delays.

16. 77 Jason Hughes +23.398 (15)
17. 15 Fariqe Hairuman +51.032 (12)
DNS 40 Richard Marsh

Race 3

Similar story to last time. Hughes wins from Hairuman again with Marsh failing to start.

12. 77 Jason Hughes +46.390 (15)
13. 15 Fariqe Hairuman +1:19.589 (12)
DNS 40 Richard Marsh

Points

1. Jason Hughes 123 (5)
2. Fariqe Hairuman 104 (4)
3. John George 47 (1)

Round 5 Mondello Park

George is still absent, planning to return at Croft leaving Hughes, Hairuman and Marsh as our only contenders again.

Qualifying

So again the amateurs are firmly at the back though Hughes is within a second of Carl Breeze the last of the professionals.

18. 77 Jason Hughes +3.118
19. 15 Fariqe Hairuman +3.869
20. 40 Richard Marsh +6.944

Race 1

Everyone finishes this time as Marsh makes the flag for the first time since the first Silverstone race and even finishes on the lead lap for the first time. Hughes takes his sixth class win of the season even managing to beat James Kaye.

14. 77 Jason Hughes +46.068 (15)
16. 15 Fariqe Hairuman +1:14.796 (12)
17. 40 Richard Marsh +1:46.182 (10)

Race 2

Now here is the championship break that Hughes was hoping for. This time he's the only finisher. Marsh is out on lap one again while Hairuman bins it on lap two. Hughes now leads by 37 points.

13. 77 Jason Hughes +32.939 (15)
Ret 15 Fariqe Hairuman
Ret 40 Richard Marsh

Race 3

Marsh yet again fails to start leaving Hughes and Hairuman to battle alone in a chaotic final race of the day. Hughes takes his fifth consecutive win and even manages to score his first overall points with a 7th place, giving an ailing Yvan Muller a hard time. Hairuman for some reason refuses to pass his stricken teammate Shaun Watson-Smith for the final overall point for 10th.

7. 77 Jason Hughes +12.304 (15)
11. 15 Fariqe Hairuman +50.996 (12)
DNS 40 Richard Marsh

Points

1. Jason Hughes 168 (8)
2. Fariqe Hairuman 128 (4)
3. Richard Marsh 50
4. John George 47 (1)
5. Paul Wallace 27 (1)

Got plenty that I root for, Gordon Shedden, Tom Onslow-Cole, Daniel Welch, Rob Austin and Dave Newsham. Oh and James Nash before he moved to WTCC.

Round 6 - Croft

John George returns with a Peugeot 406 and is slightly less hopeless, giving us a class of four again.

Qualifying

Taking up the bottom four once again but Hughes takes class pole by nearly 2 seconds and just barely looses out to Rob Collard overall.

18. 77 Jason Hughes +2.323
19. 15 Fariqe Hairuman +4.077
20. 17 John George +5.723
21. 40 Richard Marsh +5.915

Race 1

Hughes dominates the first race even getting three pros between himself and the rest of the amateurs. He is over 20 seconds ahead of Hairuman. Clearly his Kartworld MG has improved since the beginning of the season.

12. 77 Jason Hughes +35.240 (15)
16. 15 Fariqe Hairuman +59.981 (12)
17. 17 John George +1:24.529 (10)
18. 40 Richard Marsh +1:32.689 (8)

Race 2

Marsh finally takes his first class win by virtue of being the only finisher. John George was just ahead before retiring with just one lap left.

16. 40 Richard Marsh +1:22.265 (15)
Ret 17 John George
Ret 15 Fariqe Hairuman
Ret 77 Jason Hughes

Race 3

Hughes is taken out on the first lap with Hairuman joining him a few laps later. George and Marsh are left to duke it out for the class win and the wooden spoon.

15. 17 John George +1:19.885 (15)
16. 40 Richard Marsh +1 lap (12)
Ret 15 Fariqe Hairuman
Ret 77 Jason Hughes

Points

1. Jason Hughes 183 (9)
2. Fariqe Hairuman 140 (4)

In fairness I blame Legette for its rejectfulness since when Paul O'Neill took over at the end of 2006 it was solidly in the midfield.

Round 7 - Knockhill

Same lineup as before only with a total grid number of 18.

Qualifying

For the first time since Silverstone Hughes is not on pole, instead this goes to Hairuman, the Malaysian's second class pole of the season.

15. 15 Fariqe Hairuman +1.656
16. 17 John George +2.121
17. 77 Jason Hughes +2.191
18. 40 Richard Marsh +3.335

Race 1

But its Hughes that takes his tenth class win of the season while Hairuman is the only retirement. In fact Hughes very nearly takes tenth overall and the reverse grid pole for the second race, very nearly beating the dawdling Jason Plato who was attempting to not beat Matt Neal and Rob Collard both employing the same strategy to try and take the reverse grid pole.

11. 77 Jason Hughes +43.296 (15)
12. 17 John George +50.961 (12)
14. 40 Richard Marsh +1 lap (10)
Ret 15 Fariqe Hairuman

Race 2

Hughes does get an overall point this time for 10th while taking his 11th class win. A late safety car means that he's within ten seconds of the overall winner. Everyone in the class finishes.

10. 77 Jason Hughes +8.174 (15)
12. 15 Fariqe Hairuman +17.088 (12)
13. 17 John George +17.823 (10)
14. 40 Richard Marsh +1 lap (8)

Race 3

Once again, Hairuman is the only retirement. Despite all the excitement at the very front it was an uneventful race for the amateurs with Hughes completing his second hatrick weekend of the season.

12. 77 Jason Hughes +29.487 (15)
13. 17 John George +47.728 (12)
14. 40 Richard Marsh +1 lap (10)
Ret Fariqe Hairuman

Points

1. Jason Hughes 228 (12)
2. Fariqe Hairuman 152 (4)
3. Richard Marsh 113 (1)
4. John George 106 (2)
5. Paul Wallace 27 (1)

Hughes has a slim chance of securing the title after the next round at Brands Hatch. Given Hairuman's recent finishing record, it is more plausible than it seems. The battle for third is hotting up between Marsh and George, both are also fighting to not have to hold the wooden spoon each race.

Round 8 - Brands Hatch

Marsh replaces his Civic with a hopefully quicker Peugeot 307. We are back to a 20 car grid in total.

Qualifying

Hairuman fails to set a time along with Carl Breeze. Hughes takes his fourth class pole of the season.

16. 77 Jason Hughes +0.966
17. 17 John George +1.841
18. 40 Richard Marsh +3.577
20. 15 Fariqe Hairuman No Time

Race 1

Win number 13 for Hughes and he even manages to beat Robert Collard to the line. Marsh is second showing better pace with his new car while Hairuman was delayed enough to finish a lap down.

14. 77 Jason Hughes +24.288 (15)
16. 40 Richard Marsh +46.456 (12)
17. 15 Fariqe Hairuman +1 lap (10)
Ret 17 John George

Race 2

And with seven races still left to run, Hughes secures the inaugural amateurs cup as the only classified finisher. Hairuman did take the flag but he was 4 laps down meaning he wasn't classified.

11. 77 Jason Hughes +8.030 (15)
NC 15 Fariqe Hairuman +4 laps
Ret 40 Richard Marsh
Ret 17 John George

Race 3

None of the amateurs make the finish this time. A splendid follow up to taking the title for Hughes as he crashes out on lap 3. Marsh makes it the furthest completing 18 out of 27 laps.

Ret 40 Richard Marsh
Ret 15 Fariqe Hairuman
Ret 17 John George
Ret 77 Jason Hughes

Points

1. Jason Hughes 268 (14)
2. Fariqe Hairuman 162 (4)
3. Richard Marsh 125 (1)
4. John George 106 (2)
5. Paul Wallace 27 (1)

Hughes may have the championship sewed up but runner up is still open despite Hairuman having an infinitely better car than George or Marsh.

Round 9 - Snetterton

Exact same grid as before.

Qualifying

Hairuman takes his third class pole of the season with the amateurs only beating the Alfa of Stefan Hodgetts which failed to set a representative time. Everyone else is over a second ahead.

16. 15 Fariqe Hairuman +2.866
17. 77 Jason Hughes +2.908
18. 40 Richard Marsh +4.046
19. 17 John George +6.194

Race 1

Hughes wins yet again also beating Carl Breeze's GA Astra. George is the only other finisher half a minute down the road closing to within seven points of Marsh while Hairuman bins it yet again.

13. 77 Jason Hughes +43.873 (15)
15. 17 John George +1:14.785 (12)
Ret 40 Richard Marsh
Ret 15 Fariqe Hairuman

Race 2

Another win for Hughes, this time beating Michael Bentwood's Tech-Speed Astra. Everyone makes the flag this time though Marsh isn't classified.

13. 77 Jason Hughes +32.053 (15)
15. 15 Fariqe Hairuman +36.630 (12)
16. 17 John George +1:17.236 (10)
NC 40 Richard Marsh +2 laps

Race 3

Hughes takes his third triple of the season while Hairuman is the only DNF again out with a broken damper.

16. 77 Jason Hughes +30.970 (15)
17. 17 John George +1:04.206 (12)
18. 40 Richard Marsh +1:14.194 (10)
Ret 15 Fariqe Hairuman

Points

1. Jason Hughes 313 (17)
2. Fariqe Hairuman 174 (4)
3. John George 140 (2)
4. Richard Marsh 135 (1)
5. Paul Wallace 27 (1)

The battle for 2nd is still on. Can George or Marsh sneak past Hairuman. Their only realistic chance is if the Malaysian fails to finish at least twice which seems to be close to a given most of the time.

Round 10 - Donnington Park

The final round of the season sees Marsh leave John Batchelors's team, seemingly taking his 307 with him. His replacement, the awesomely named Jay Wheals is stuck with the Civic from earlier on, you know the one that suspiciously looks like the production class car that the team used last season. Wheals will be classed as a pro seeing as he has a junior career.

Qualifying

Hughes has by far his best qualifying of the season, making it up to 13th overall and beating James Kaye, Dan Eaves and Gavin Pyper in the process. George fails to set a time along with Hairuman's pro teammate, Shaun Watson-Smith.

13. 77 Jason Hughes +1.971
17. 15 Fariqe Hairuman +4.180
20. 17 John George No Time

Race 1

And... no one finishes again. :P Hughes retires two laps from the end.

Ret 77 Jason Hughes
Ret 17 John George
Ret 15 Fariqe Hairuman

Race 2

Hughes is the only finisher. This really is becoming an anti climatic finale. :( Hughes manages to beat Wheals by half a minute making me really suspect that its still the production Civic from last season. Hairuman was out on lap one while George failed to even start. The Malaysian secures runner up in the most rejectful way possible.

13. 77 Jason Hughes +33.329 (15)
Ret 15 Fariqe Hairuman
DNS 17 John George

Race 3

And this time Hughes is the only starter. Leaving me to slap my forehead at what a pathetic finale this was. :D

11. 77 Jason Hughes +18.791 (15)
DNS 15 Fariqe Hairuman
DNS 17 John George

Points

1. Jason Hughes 343 (19)
2. Fariqe Hairuman 174 (4)
3. John George 140 (2)
4. Richard Marsh 135 (1)
5. Paul Wallace 27 (1)

So other than Hughes taking two more wins, the championship is exactly the same as before.

Re: BTCC Amateurs Cup (From 2004)

Okay let's get 2005 started.

Eligable drivers for 2005

23. Mark Proctor (Fast-Tec Motorsport)
36. Jason Hughes (Kartworld)
77. Richard Williams (SpeedEquipe)
78. Ian Curley (SpeedEquipe)
82. Fiona Leggate (Tech-Speed Motorsport)

From 2004's contenders only defending champion Jason Hughes will return and even he will miss the first half of the season. But we will see at least four new contenders, first is ASCAR midfielder Mark Proctor who will bring his Fast-Tec team with him for his first crack at road course racing. He has bought the Astra that Rob Collard has used for the past two seasons, looks like he has so little funding that he couldn't even change the livery.

SpeedEquipe, backed by HPI will run the very first amateur driver pairing with Richard Williams and Ian Curley both moving up from decent Clio Cup careers. They will race with a pair of Lexus IS200s which the team is ambitiously developing themselves. Curley may have to miss a few rounds at the start of the season however.

Finally Tech-Speed plan to race with the BTCC's first ever bio-ethanol powered car having converted the Astra that they ran with Michael Bentwood last season. Female racer, Fiona Leggate will be the driver though it will be a few rounds before we see her out.

A small entry list up front should see the amateurs able to compete for overall points on a more regular basis this season.

Round 1 - Donnington Park

So only Richard Williams and Mark Proctor make it to the first round at Donnington Park joining just 10 pro entries to make a pitiful 12 car grid overall.

Qualifying

Williams' Lexus proves to be hopelessly off the pace while Proctor fails to even set a time. Williams is over six seconds behind anyone else.

11. 77 Richard Williams +7.418
12. 23 Mark Proctor No Time

Race 1

Proctor is at least only a few seconds off the overall pace and is the only classified finisher as Williams was delayed for a couple of laps.

10. 23 Mark Proctor +1 lap (15)
NC 77 Richard Williams +3 laps

Race 2

This time Williams is the only finisher as Proctor fails to finish. Williams' pace is at least better in the race as he's competitive with Proctor.

9. 77 Richard Williams +1 lap (15)
Ret 23 Mark Proctor

Race 3

Both finish this time and on the lead lap!

Round 2 - Thruxton

Just when you think the entry list couldn't get more pathetic, Mark Proctor has to miss this round while Richard Williams fails to set a time in qualifying then is unable to race in any of the three races! So as far as the amateurs go, bugger all happens.

At least Tom Chilton returns with his Civic to give us a grand total of..... 11 cars.

God 2005 sucked.

Round 3 - Brands Hatch Indy

Ian Curley joins the grid in the second Lexus alongside Williams meaning that for the first time we have an amateur super team. :D Proctor also returns making it an overall grid of 14.

Qualifying

Curley sticks it on the class pole at his first attempt while his teammate fails to set a time again.

12. 78 Ian Curley +2.860
13. 23 Mark Proctor +5.956
14. 77 Richard Williams No Time

Race 1

And...... No one finishes. 2005 continues to suck.

Ret 77 Richard Williams
Ret 23 Mark Proctor
Ret 78 Ian Curley

Race 2

This time only Curley makes the finish, 40 seconds behind everyone else! He was also the only amateur in the race as Williams and Proctor fail to start.

9. 78 Ian Curley +44.896 (15)
DNS 77 Richard Williams
DNS 23 Mark Proctor

Race 3

Everyone makes the finish this time, though Curley isn't classified. Proctor takes his third class win of the season.

8. 23 Mark Proctor +47.217 (15)
9. 77 Richard Williams +1 lap (12)
NC 78 Ian Curley +5 laps

Round 4 - Oulton Park

Same entry list as at Brands.

Qualifying

Despite being over four seconds slower than the pros, we have an extremely tight battle for the amateur pole with Williams edging out Proctor.

12. 77 Richard Williams +5.450
13. 23 Mark Proctor +5.461
14. 78 Ian Curley +5.736

Race 1

Fourth class win for Proctor who remains undefeated in every race he's finished. Curley again fails to start in the unreliable Lexus.

12. 23 Mark Proctor +1:08.938 (15)
13. 77 Richard Williams +1 lap (12)
DNS 78 Ian Curley

Race 2

Our closest race of the season so far as Proctor holds off Williams by under four seconds. As a bonus both manage to beat the delayed Jason Plato and Gavin Smith! Curley fails to start yet again.

8. 23 Mark Proctor +59.715 (15)
9. 77 Richard Williams +1:03.507 (12)
DNS 78 Ian Curley

Race 3

Thanks to the delights of the reverse grid, Williams and Proctor get to start at the front and immediately get punted off by the pros whom were caught out by their snail like pace. Since Curley again fails to start, no one finishes again. 2005 still sucks.

Round 5 - Croft

Fiona Leggate joins the grid with Tech-Speed's odd bio-ethanol powered Astra. Though we are now up to a 15 car grid, 2005 is no less rejectful. :D

Qualifying

The amateurs are still miles off everyone else but they are still closely matched amongst themselves. Proctor takes pole.

12. 23 Mark Proctor +3.275
13. 82 Fiona Leggate +3.859
14. 78 Ian Curley +3.971
15. 77 Richard Williams +4.221

Race 1

An extremely close race all the way through, Proctor lead originally until he crashes heavily causing the race to end early after 11 laps. Leggate wins on debut! She just barely holds off the Lexus who both finish the same race for the first time.

11. 82 Fiona Leggate +1:41.009 (15)
12. 78 Ian Curley +1:41.467 (12)
13. 77 Richard Williams +1:42.012 (10)
Ret 23 Mark Proctor

Race 2

Speed-Equipe take their first ever 1-2 finish with Curley leading home Williams. Both beat home Jason Plato's SEAT. After his earlier crash, Proctor is out for the rest of the day and looses the championship lead to Williams.

11. 78 Ian Curley +51.814 (15)
12. 77 Richard Williams +58.318 (12)
14. 82 Fiona Leggate +1:01.801 (10)
DNS 23 Mark Proctor

Race 3

Both Lexus' retire early leaving Leggate to cruise to her second class win and her first overall point for 10th.
