Reject of the Race - Hungary 2024
Reject of the Race - Hungary 2024
1. McLaren. Absolute boneheaded stupidity, a complete driver management failure. If Norris loses the title by seven points, we can point to this nonsense.
2. Max Verstappen. A petulant toddler when he's not 30 seconds up the road from the next driver.

Yeah, to be honest, we do not need to bother with a vote this time, these are the only legitimate answers.

Re: Reject of the Race - Hungary 2024
McLaren entirely mishandled the race by pitting Lando to protect against a non-existent threat from Hamilton, and then indulged in absolutely ass-backwards logic by telling Lando that he "needs the team and Piastri to win a Championship" whilst simultaneously wanting to drop Lando behind Piastri and cost him 7 points. They should be doing the opposite and telling Piastri to move over for Lando.
Max Verstappen cried for a whole race and eventually lost his head passing Hamilton.
Honourable mentions to Crofty for being pathologically unable to shut the hell up about how Max had done a million hours of sim racing in the previous day, and Gianpiero Lambiase for needling at Max mid race before he entirely lost his head.

Reckon we can wrap the thread up here, hard-pressed to add anything.
As a wider point, do you ever look at Alpine and wonder what the point is?

1 Mclaren. Made both drivers deeply unhappy with some more very questionable decisions again. Lando had a 6 second lead and told him to give him up despite him doing nothing wrong. Shocking.
2. Max Verstappen. Well. He spent most of his race on the radio whinging about the car, went off several times and then did a dreadful dive bomb on Hammy that only ruined his race. No wonder the team finally snapped back to tell him to stop being childish and basically shut up.

Re: Reject of the Race - Hungary 2024
McLaren: It's rare that a team takes a 1-2 and comes off so negatively. Fun to watch, but not the way to run a team.
Re: Reject of the Race - Hungary 2024
McLaren needed to either be more decisive and give a firm and clear order to Norris to let Piastri through, or take the more ruthless attitude that, with Norris being so much closer to Verstappen in the WDC, they needed to maximise the number of points Norris gained on Verstappen. The worst part is that they could have easily avoided it by pitting Piastri first, and the way they were talking to Norris over the radio seems more likely to only dent Norris's confidence in the team and himself.
Speaking of Verstappen, that was a return to the more tempestuous side of him that we've not seen in a while - he was hot headed and angry throughout the race, and it eventually showed with trying a wild move that just wasn't on. He's lucky that he didn't take himself out of the race entirely with that move - maybe, next time, it's better not to stay up until 3.30am sim racing before a major race.

Yup, Mclaren and Max for all the reasons above
Re: Reject of the Race - Hungary 2024
Russell, Perez and Alpine were Rejects of Q1 and Qualifying overall.
As for the race, it's a slam dunk as everyone else has stated.

For something different (ie not McLaren or Max) I'm going to say the gulf between the top 4 teams and the rest - it's like 2017 or 2018 all over again except McLaren has joined the front group, back then it was just Mercedes/Ferrari/Red Bull. But the principle is the same!

1) Max Verstappen - When your own team starts calling you childish, then any other driver would recognise this as the point where all this throwing toys out of the pram because things aren't going your way has got to stop, also how many times did he exceed track limits while fighting for position in the end? That collision with Lewis was blatantly Max's fault and the icing on the cake.
2) McLaren - I'm happy for Oscar but did they really have to replicate Jerez 1997 (minus the sack threat obviously) in order to do that?

Wasn't it Rubens at Austria 2002 who had the sack threat rather than DC at Jerez 1997 and/or Melbourne 1998?Har1MAS1415 wrote: ↑21 Jul 2024, 21:00 2) McLaren - I'm happy for Oscar but did they really have to replicate Jerez 1997 (minus the sack threat obviously) in order to do that?

Re: Reject of the Race - Hungary 2024
It was quoted during the actual highlights on Channel 4 that DC was threatened with the sack if he didn't give way to Hakkinen. DC even said so himself. I know because I watched the highlights.James1978 wrote: ↑22 Jul 2024, 06:27Wasn't it Rubens at Austria 2002 who had the sack threat rather than DC at Jerez 1997 and/or Melbourne 1998?Har1MAS1415 wrote: ↑21 Jul 2024, 21:00 2) McLaren - I'm happy for Oscar but did they really have to replicate Jerez 1997 (minus the sack threat obviously) in order to do that?

Most people have mentioned McLaren and Max for obvious reasons. I would also opt for these ones.

Re: Reject of the Race - Hungary 2024
Yeah, McLaren and Max are obvious. In ordinary life, Lando could have been less of a dick, yes blame McLaren for pointlessly bringing him in first, but he was almost as bad on the radio as Max was.
It's just unbelievable...that Formula 1 could be such a ridiculous melange of idiots.

McLaren - How do you bathplug up a 1-2 finish that badly? And to cover off Hamilton, who had literally zero chance of undercutting either of them. McLaren right now are like when you used to play the old '90s F1 games on easy. Fastest car by a mile, but can't plan a pit stop strategy to save their souls.
Red Bull - Forget Max, this whole team is a disaster. The car gets slower and slower every week, Checo can't get out of Q1, Newey is on the record as saying the jet intake sidepods weren't his idea and he's against them, and they rushed the knee-jerk upgrade out so fast they only had parts for one car.
I am more likely than most to be lenient with Max because he has been very clear that he does not believe the team is taking the rise of McLaren and Mercedes seriously. As they said on The Race, its one thing for us fans to say "oh he's overreacting, he'll easily walk the title still.", but the team CANNOT fall into that trap. Rightly or wrongly, Max believes they are, so I can understand why he's upset.
Everybody Winning - 13 on the grid drivers have a Grand Prix win now. The combo of way more races, a static for way too long driver roster, engine freeze, etc. has made a win far less special than it used to be.
HM to Aston Martin - Much like BAR in 2005, its painfully obvious they had no idea why their car was quick last season.

Sounds a bit like the modern day British Touring Car Championship.
